Sunday, October 21st Pastoral Reflections…. from Fr. Charles

It is common to say that someone was “elevated” to a position of authority. If we take Jesus seriously, that is a wrong term to use. Authority is service and suffering, according to Jesus and the Gos-pel. When someone is given “authority,” they are given a mandate to serve, and their service may result in suffering. That’s the nature of Christian authority. Jesus was crystal clear about that. Christian leadership is that way: it is a call to serve, not a call to be elevated above anyone. I taught in a Catholic Christian leadership school and was president of that school in the early days of my priesthood. I remember how difficult it was to convince these high school students that Christian Leadership was “servant leadership.” They had to learn to serve the students by sometimes cleaning up after them and being the last one out of the dance, by standing apart from them when it came to enforcing rules, by being an example of a good leader even when it made them unpopular. But I look back at some of the real leaders we produced: a governor of Kansas, a head neu-ro surgeon and dean of a medical school at Kansas University, a reporter for the Wall Street Journal who was captured and impris-oned in Iraq, and so many more. Servant leadership: it’s the way of Jesus and it’s the way to change the world…..without being “elevated” to high places.

WELCOME BISHOP JORGE RODRIGUEZ Will be celebrating an appreciation Mass for all the Gabriel House volunteers throughout the Archdiocese of Denver here at Annunciation Church on October 24 at 4:00 p.m. A meal will be provided for the Bishop and the volunteers in the Loreto House. The meal will be prepared by our Wednesday Night Prayer Group. Parishioners are welcome to attend the mass.

All Saints Day The Solemnity of All Saints is a Holy Day of Obligation. There will be a vigil mass on October 31 at 6:30 p.m. in Spanish. (The Religious Education Students will be dressed as saints for this mass and will have their saints posters in the church). On November 1, we will celebrate Mass with the Annunciation Students (in saints’ costumes) in English at 8:30 a.m. There will be another Spanish Mass at 6:30 p.m. on November 1. Dress up as a saint, if you wish. More im-portantly, Be a saint!

Día de todos los Santos La solemnidad de todos los Santos es un día santo de obligación. Habrá una Misa de vigilia el 31 de Octubre a las 6:30 p.m. en Espa-ñol. Annual Fund Raising Pie Sale Once again this year we will be selling pies for Thanks-giving. The pies will be $20 each and can be picked up in the parish office building on the Tuesday and Wednesday before Thanksgiving. This pie sale netted us over $4000 last year. The pies are all donated.
