Buena Nueva Good News Reflection

The Christian Call of Collaboration

In this Sunday's Gospel reading, Jesus tells his disciples to ask the "Master" (God the Father) of the

"harvest" (conversion to Christ) to send out more "laborers" (evangelizers). And in the next breath, he tells

them that they are the laborers and that they must get busy: "Go on your way," he says.

When you think of evangelizers in the Catholic Church,

who comes to mind first? Most of us think of priests, and we all know that we need more priests. New vocations in Western societies are still way too few to compensate for

the elderly ones who are retiring and dying.

Do you pray for an increase of vocations? Good, but that's only part of what Jesus is asking us to do. "Go on your way," he says to all of us, "and use your gifts, your

talents, and your skills to assist in the harvest.

Jesus has always been collaborative. The number of laborers for the mission of the Church will only be

sufficient when we all join the effort -- clergy, religious, and laity -- working together with our separate and

unique talents and skills, humbly assisting each other as members of the same team.

To reach this sufficiency, many of us have to overcome

the "someone else will take care of it" attitude. And some have to overcome the desire for perfection, the "I can

take care of it better myself" attitude, which robs others of the opportunity to serve.

Many of us need to overcome the fear of losing control,

the "I must tell others how to do their job" attitude, which chases away some very talented laborers. Jesus said we should carry no supplies into ministry; in other

words: We should accept whatever is offered to us.

Our prayers for an increase of consecrated vocations are answered from within collaborative ministry. Clergy and religious are called to be good role models, which will attract new vocations, but the laity are called to serve

God with the same zeal and holiness that we expect from priests, because out of families who serve come the holy

priests and religious who serve.

Questions for Personal Reflection: Which ministries in your parish and diocese are lacking

sufficient laborers? If you're not already busy in the work of God's kingdom, how can you use your talents to help there? If you're already serving enthusiastically, how can

you encourage others to get involved?

El Llamado Cristiano a Colaborar

En la lectura del Evangelio de este domingo, Jesús dice a sus discípulos que pidan al "Señor" (Dios Padre) de la

"cosecha" (conversión a Cristo) que envíe más "obreros" (evangelizadores). Y a renglón seguido, les dice que

ellos son los trabajadores y que deben ponerse a trabajar: "Vayan" les dice.

Cuando piensas en evangelizadores de la Iglesia Católica, ¿qué

viene a tu mente en primer lugar? La mayoría de nosotros pensamos en sacerdotes y todos sabemos que necesitamos más

sacerdotes. Las nuevas vocaciones en las sociedades occidentales son aún muy pocas para compensar la cantidad de

sacerdotes mayores que se están retirando y muriendo.

¿Oras por un aumento de vocaciones? Bueno, pero eso es sólo una parte de lo que Jesús nos pide que hagamos. "Vayan" nos

dice a todos nosotros "y usa tus dones, tus talentos y tus habilidades para ayudar en la cosecha.

Jesús siempre ha sido colaborador. El número de obreros para la misión de la Iglesia sólo será suficiente cuando todos nos

unamos al esfuerzo - sacerdotes, religiosos y laicos - trabajando juntos con nuestros talentos y habilidades, únicos y especiales, ayudándonos mutuamente en humildad

como miembros del mismo equipo.

Para llegar a esta plenitud, muchos de nosotros tenemos que superar la actitud de "alguien más se hará cargo de ello". Y algunos tienen que superar el deseo de perfección, con la

actitud de "yo puedo hacer esa tarea mejor", que priva a otros de la oportunidad de servir.

Muchos de nosotros tenemos que superar el miedo de perder el control, esa actitud de "Debo decir a los demás cómo hacer su

trabajo", porque ahuyenta a algunos trabajadores muy calificados. Jesús dijo que no debíamos llevar nada en el

ministerio; en otras palabras: debemos aceptar lo que se nos ofrece, incluyendo los talentos de quienes se unen a nosotros

en el ministerio.

Nuestras oraciones pidiendo el aumento de vocaciones consagradas son contestadas dentro de un ministerio

colaborador. Los sacerdotes, las religiosas y consagrados están llamados a ser buenos modelos de conducta, lo que atraerá

nuevas vocaciones, pero los laicos estamos llamados a servir a Dios con el mismo celo y santidad que esperamos de ellos

porque de las familias servidoras surgen sacerdotes, religiosas y consagrados santos que están al servicio del Reino.

Preguntas para la Reflexión Personal:

¿Qué ministerios en tu parroquia y diócesis carecen de suficientes trabajadores? Si no estás ya trabajando en la obra del reino de Dios, ¿cómo puedes usar tus talentos para ayudar

allí? Si ya estás sirviendo con entusiasmo, ¿cómo puedes animar a otros a participar?

¿Qué es un tabernáculo?

La caja de oro en una Iglesia

Católica es sagrada, apartada

para un propósito muy especial.

Uno de los elementos

principales y más distintivos de

cualquier Iglesia Católica es

una caja o gabinete, generalmente hecho de oro colocado en el

frente y el centro de una Iglesia. La forma exacta varía, pero la

mayoría de las veces encontrarás una lámpara de vigilia roja

encendida junto a ella.

Como católicos, llamamos a la caja un tabernáculo y contiene el

"santo de los santos", Jesús presente en la Eucaristía. La palabra

tabernáculo significa "lugar de morada" y se refiere a la "tienda de

reunión" que los israelitas construyeron para facilitar su

adoración a Dios en el desierto (Éxodo 26). Dios le ordenó al

hermano de Moisés, Aarón, el sacerdote principal, que ofreciera

sacrificios dentro del Tabernáculo, y especificó que tres cosas se

mantuvieran adentro:

El Arca de la Alianza

El candelero de oro (Menorah)

La mesa de oro del Pan de la Presencia.

Además, dentro del Arca de la Alianza, Moisés debía poner un

poco del maná que Dios le dio a los israelitas. El maná a menudo

se describe en el Antiguo Testamento como el "pan de los

ángeles" y era un pan celestial que los israelitas comían en el

desierto (Salmo 78:25).

¿La presencia real? ¿Como podemos estar seguros?

Como se mencionó anteriormente, el uso de un tabernáculo en las

What is a tabernacle?

The gold box in a Catholic

church is sacred, set apart for

a very special purpose. One of

the primary and most

distinctive fixtures of any

Catholic church is a box or

cabinet, typically made of gold placed in the front and center

of a church. The exact shape varies, but you will most often

find a red vigil lamp lighted next to it.

As Catholics we call the box a tabernacle and it contains the

“holy of holies,” Jesus present in the Eucharist. The

word tabernacle means “dwelling place” and refers to the “tent

of meeting” that the Israelites built to facilitate their worship

of God in the desert (Exodus 26). God commanded Moses’

brother Aaron, the chief priest, to offer sacrifice within the

Tabernacle, and specified that three things be kept inside:

The Ark of the Covenant

The golden lampstand (Menorah)

The golden table of the Bread of the Presence

Additionally, within the Ark of the Covenant, Moses was to

put some of the manna that God gave to the Israelites. The

manna is often described in the Old Testament as the “bread

of angels,” and was a heavenly bread that the people of Israel

ate in the desert (Psalm 78:25)

The Real Presence? How Can We Be Sure?

As mentioned above, the use of a tabernacle in Catholic

churches rests solely on the doctrine of the Real Presence of

Christ in the Eucharist, the knowledge that Jesus himself is

truly present under the appearances of bread (and wine). In

other words, the tabernacle is not used in a symbolic way, to

symbolize God’s presence among us, but in a real way (like

the Tabernacle of the Old Testament) to house and protect the

real presence of God in the Eucharist.

This is also why Catholics genuflect when passing the

tabernacle. We do so in honor of the real presence of Christ

present in the Eucharistic bread reserved and protected in the

tabernacle. The vigil lamp burns as a sign of Christ present.

On Holy Thursday night, after the Mass of the Lord’s Supper,

the Blessed Sacrament is removed from the main tabernacle to

an altar of repose elsewhere in the church, for a time of

adoration. For the period from Holy Thursday night through

the beginning of the Easter Vigil on Holy Saturday night, a

time when we recall Jesus’ death and burial, the tabernacle is

empty, with the door left open and the vigil lamp extinguished.

Without the Eucharist, the tabernacle is simply an empty gold

box.

Como católicos todos estamos llamados a servir. Sin em-bargo, muchos de nosotros no estamos seguros de cuáles son nuestros carismas o dones del Espíritu Santo para ayudar a construir la Iglesia de Dios. A través de la oración podemos discernir cómo Dios nos está llamando. La próxima vez que su párroco o feligrés le pida unirse a un comité, pregúntele a Dios primero, si eso es lo que Él quiere que haga con sus dones.

As Catholics we are all called to serve. However, many of us are unsure of what our charisms or gifts from the Holy Spirit are to help build God’s Church. Through prayer we are able to discern how God is calling us. The next time

your pastor or fellow parishioner asks you to join a committee, ask God first, if that is what He wants you to do

with your gifts. Pray for the Sick & Home Bound

Music Notes:

During next couple of months, our Choirs

will be off for a well served summer break.

Music for our liturgies during this time will

be led by our Cantors and Accompanists. Their role is to

“support the singing done by the faithful, and direct the

singing of the various hymns, allowing the people to sing

their proper parts as well and to foster the active

participation of the faithful by means of the

singing.” (GERM 103)

Our Choirs resume in early September, newcomers are

especially welcome at that time. We are always “a work in

progress,” summer for us is just a breather, a time to relax

to be ready for a running start as summer ends. Have you

considered joining our Music Ministry? Let us know your

interest by leaving your name at the Parish Office. We’ll

contact you with more information!
