Located in the most southern tip ofthe European continent, Tarifa is abeautiful city steeped in history,culture, beaches, nature and thegood weather to enjoy them all.Throughout the years Phoenicians,Tartessians, Romans and, until theChristian Reconquest in the 13thcentury, Arabs have all settledhere, in the closest point on theIberian Peninsula to Africa, leavingbehind their marks. In this vein,rock drawings and numerousarchaeological remains such asLos Algarbes necropolis datingfrom the Bronze Age or the ruins ofthe ancient Roman city of BaeloClaudia - an important settlementlocated in the Bolonia inlet - havebeen discovered.

The Roman Iulia Traducta becameTarifa in the 8th century with theMuslims' arrival, a civilisationthat stayed for five hundred yearsand left its stamp on the city,which can clearly be seen today inthe cityscape and numerous buil-dings with clear Arabic features.With almost 38 kilometres of bea-ches and a mountainous terraininland, Tarifa has always been asought-after frontier city thanks toits strategic location. Thereremain today many defensivestructures such as watchtowers,the wall built by the Arabs in the10th century or the castle built inthe same century by Abd-ar-Rahman III, later known as theCastle of Guzmán The Good.

Further important monumentsare: the gothic-Mudejar Churchof Santa María (Saint Mary); theChurch of Santiago built in the14th century on the site of anancient mosque; the gothic-styleChurch of San Mateo dating fromthe 16th century; the Church of

San Francisco built in the 16thcentury and housing the statue ofCristo del Consuelo (Christ ofConsolation); the Shrine of Ntra.Sra. de la Luz (Our Lady of Light)where the Virgin of Light is wors-

hipped, and the ancestralhomes, former palaces going upto three storeys high and wherecoat anda arms can be seen.

Tarifa enjoys shallow waters andwhite sand on its beaches - ano-ther greatly valued tourist attrac-tion. The borough has becomeEuropean windsurfing capitalplaying host to internationalcompetitions and enjoying top-class sands such as PuntaPaloma, Valdevaqueros and Torrede la Peña that are perfectly sui-ted for enjoying and practisingmany sports. The entire Tarifacoast is located in the EstrechoNature Reserve, a stopover formigratory birds and marine wil-dlife which can easily be spottedby heading out to sea on one ofthe many expeditions on offer inthe area. The Lances NaturalArea where many birds nest and Bolonia Inlet, a NaturalMonument where three differentecosystems co-exist - the beach,

the pine grove and an impressive30-metre high dune - are espe-cially outstanding.

There are also splendid leisureareas to the inland of theborough for hiking, horse routesor cycling tourism. Many stopsare located in the AlcornocalesNature Reserve, which many con-sider the best forest in Spain orlast Mediterranean jungle due toits size and the variety of speciesto be found there.

Tarifa TarifaA lo largo de los siglos, Tarifa ha sido puerta entre África y Europa. El origen dela ciudad se pierde en la historia, habiendo sido habitada por fenicios,romanos, árabes... Su valioso conjunto de pinturas rupestres y la Necrópolisde los Algarbes da muestra de los primeros asentamientos en la zona. Laruinas Romanas de la ciudad de Baelo Claudia, del siglo II (a. C.), muestranuna pujante ciudad comercial. El laberinto árabe de sus calles constituye unpaseo diario lleno de encanto para el explorador curioso. Alguna de esascalles, les llevarán al Castillo de Guzmán el Bueno, fortaleza Califal del sigloX. Una ciudad, en definitiva, con firmes raíces en la historia pero con unafuerte y creativa voluntad de contemporaneidad.

Tarifa has been the bridge beween Africa and Europe for centuries. The city'sorigins are enveloped in history, it having been inhabited by Phoenicians,Romans, Moors… The valuable collection of cave paintings and the AlgarveNecropolis are proof of the area's first settlements. The Roman ruins from thecity of Baelo Claudia dating from the 2nd century (B.C.) show a vibrant tradingcity. The Arabic labyrinthine streets make for a charming daytime stroll for thecurious explorer with some of those street leading to the Castle of Guzmán TheGood, a 10th century Caliphal fortress. In summary, the city has firm roots inthe past paralleled by a strong contemporary creative drive.

Tarifa is known around the world for being one of the best places towindsurf leading international competitors and fans to choose the areaas a place to relax and have fun for decades. In the past few yearsanother sport has become popular, kitesurf, meaning the number ofparticipants flitting between classical windsurf and the new discipline -when the type of wind and strength allow - has surged. Tarifa alsoguards one if its greatest attractions underneath the waves: a richanimal and plant life sharing some of the most famed underwatergeography that is ideal for divers.

La espectacularidad del paisaje tarifeño es la primera grata sorpresa que saludaal visitante. La presencia de África, regala un matiz mágico al horizonte, y hacepatente que ésta es tierra de contrastes. Existen dos parques naturales: El Parquede los Alcornocales que constituye el último ejemplo de bosque mediterráneo quese conserva en todo Europa, y en el que sorprenden las especies suptropicalesque en él han encontrado refugio. La totalidad de nuestras playas, se encuentranprotegidas por el Parque Natural del Estrecho, que valora su riqueza yconservación en tierra y bajo el mar. También sus dos grandes dunas, coronandolas playas de Bolonia y Valdevaqueros, destacan por su amplitud y altura, que lesha valido la consideración de monumentos naturales.

The spectacular beauty of Tarifa's landscape is the first pleasant surprise towelcome the visitor. Africa off in the distance adds a magical touch to the horizonand clearly shows this is a land of many contrasts. There are two nature reserves:Alcornocales Park making up the last example of a Mediterranean forest in the wholeof Europe where surprising subtropical species have found refuge; with all ourbeaches being protected thanks to the Estrecho Nature Reserve where their varietyand conservation above and below the water are greatly valued. There are also twolarge dunes crowning Bolonia and Valdevaqueros beaches that standout thanks totheir spread and height leading to them being considered natural monuments.

Situada en el punto más meridio-nal del continente europeo, Tarifaes una preciosa ciudad, llena dehistoria, cultura, playas, naturale-za y buen tiempo para disfrutar detodas ellas. En el punto más cerca-no a África de la península ibéricase asentaron a lo largo de los añosfenicios, tartessos, romanos y ára-bes hasta la reconquista cristianaen el siglo XIII, dejando todos ellossu huella, de mayor o menor impor-tancia. Así, se han encontrado pin-turas rupestres y numerosos restosarqueológicos como la necrópolisde los Algarbes, perteneciente a laEdad del Bronce, o las ruinas de laantigua ciudad romana de BaeloClaudia, un importante yacimientosituado en la ensenada de Bolonia.

La Iulia Traducta de los romanos seconvirtió en Tarifa en el siglo VIIIcon la llegada de los musulmanes,pueblo que durante quinientosaños dejó su impronta en la ciudad,visible hoy en día en el trazadourbano y en numerosas edificacio-nes de características claramenteárabes. Con casi 38 kilómetros deplayas y un terreno interior en el queabundan las montañas, Tarifa hasido siempre una ciudad de carác-ter fronterizo y codiciada por suestratégica posición. Actualmentese conservan abundantes construc-ciones defensivas como torresvigía, la muralla levantada por losmusulmanes en el siglo X o el casti-llo que mando construir en elmismo siglo Abderramán III, poste-riormente denominado Castillo deGuzmán El Bueno.

Otros monumentos importantesson la Iglesia de Santa María, deestilo gótico-mudéjar; la Iglesia deSantiago, edificada en el siglo XIVsobre una antigua mezquita; laIglesia de San Mateo, obra delsiglo XVI y estilo gótico; la Iglesiade San Francisco, templo levanta-do en el siglo XVI dónde se halla la imagen del Cristo delConsuelo; el Santuario de NuestraSeñora de la Luz, donde se veneraa la Virgen de la Luz, y las casassolariegas blasonadas, antiguos

palacetes que alcanzan una alturahasta de tres pisos.

Tarifa tiene en sus playas de aguaspoco profundas y arenas blancasotro de sus grandes valores turísti-cos. Convertida en capital europeadel windsurf y escenario de compe-ticiones internacionales, el munici-pio cuenta con arenales de primeracategoría como Punta Paloma,Valdevaqueros y Torre de la Peña,perfectamente acondicionadospara su disfrute y para la práctica dediversos deportes. Toda la costa

tarifeña se encuentra dentro delParque Natural del Estrecho, lugarde paso de aves migratorias y cetá-ceos, que pueden avistarse confacilidad adentrándose en el marcon alguna de las numerosas expe-diciones que se ofertan en la locali-dad. Especial belleza tienen elParaje Natural de los Lances, dondeanidan gran cantidad de aves, y laEnsenada de Bolonia, MonumentoNatural en el que conviven tres eco-sistemas distintos: la playa, el pinary una impresionante duna de másde 30 metros de altura.

El interior del término municipalcuenta también con estupendosespacios para el ocio, la práctica desenderismo, las rutas a ca-ballo o el cicloturismo. Muchos de estos parajes forman parte del Parque Natural de losAlcornocales, considerado pormuchos como el mejor bosque deEspaña o la última selva mediterrá-nea tanto por su extensión como porla variedad de especies que alberga.

Toda esta diversidad de recursosnaturales y paisajísticos permite aTarifa disponer de una completa ofer-ta turística para todos los gustos.
