Objectives of TPR?• 1. Teaching oral proficiency at a beginning

level• 2. Using comprehension as a means to

speaking• 3. Using action-based drills in the

imperative form

What is TPR?• TPR (Total Physical Response) is a

language teaching method built around the coordination of speech and action; it attempts to teach language through physical (motor) activity.

• TPR was developed by Dr. James J. Asher • TPR is based upon the way that children

learn their mother tongue.

The Courses that can be taught in TPR

• Vocabulary

• Classroom Language

• Imperatives

The Advantage and DisadvantageAdvantage:• It is fun• It is easy to implement• It is reduce pressure

and stress for students • It is good for

kinaesthetic who need to be active in the class

• It can be used in large and small classes

Disadvantage:• It is only for young

teenager and children• It is only for limited

courses; drilling and repetitive

• It is only focus on listening comprehension and speaking

Learner’s Roles• Learners and performers• Imitators of the teacher’s nonverbal model• Monitor and evaluate their on progress

Teacher’s Role

• Director of all students’ behaviors • Decides what to teach • Serves as model of the target

language • Presents the new material • Selects supporting materials for

classroom use

Conclusion TPR is language teaching method that learners’ speaking

skill through listening to their teacher and before requiring them to speak, and asking them to practise using verbal communication accompany by physical actions.
