One of the most disadvantaged andvulnerable group are the millions of underprivileged children who live and workin the most inhumane situations for anumber of reasons. Even though theIndian constitution guarantees free andcompulsory education to all children to allchildren up to the age of 14, there are noschoolsthatthe poor canchoosefrom.

As Meaningful Journey as volunteers, wegot the opportunity to work in care centresfor underprivileged children, which arestriving to provide a better life and better future for this most marginalized group. We got the opportunity to teach under privileged children in both non formaleducation programs being run by NGOs aswell as formal schools where you wouldassist the teachers with interactiveteaching.

A household survey in Warlipada slumarea consists of around 45-60 householdsshows that only just over half the childrenare in school. It also shows that a highover-age and dropout ratio exists amongslum children. Some policy and practiceamendments, such as collaboration withanganwadi, extension of subsidy for stationery, books etc., are recommendedto improve admission, retention andcompletionof compulsoryeducation.

At the completion of 3 weeks of our initiative program, we find out that 88.55%of the children knew Hindi alphabets,60.83% improvement on writing Englishword dictation, 55.40% of the childrenknew addition wholly, 53.60% of thechildren knew subtraction wholly, 53.20%of the children knew multiplication wholly,33.33% overall improvement was seen inword meaning in writing and 82.60%overall improvementi n Handwriting.
