Welcome back from Room 45. We have all had a good break
over the holidays and are ready for more learning.
Last term our activities included discussion about Australiananimals. We made some great wombats, sang songs, read
stories and discussed them. Other animals included were
koalas, kangaroos and emus. We created an indoor wildlife
park with soft toys
and small sand toys.
We had a Veterinary Centre for the care of our wild animals
that were hurt. While at the centre we weighed and
measured the animals. We borrowed some stuffed Australian
animals (wallaby, goanna, owl, echidna) from the museum for
children to touch, feel, look at and discuss.
In the last week of school we celebrated NAIDOC week bymaking a cave for reading books and talking about stories
from the Dreamtime. The children created dot paintings in
the cave and on
boomerangs. We also
had a go at throwing
boomerangs. We
finished the term making vegetable soup and damper then ate
this around the campfire.
Children are always on the move. They have fun participating
in obstacle courses that include physical skills of balancing,
hopping, jumping, throwing, catching and climbing.

NAIDOC celebrations were held at
the end of last term. Well done to all
the staff, parents and the super team
of students involved in the activities. It was
fabulous to see so many people at the opening
Assembly and enjoying the shared multicultural
lunch. The lunch time activities of looming, dot
painting and colouring-in also drew great crowds!

Telling Children What To Do
By Professor Matt Saunders
When children refuse to cooperate, it may be
related to the way instructions are given. Here
are some common traps.
Too many. The more instructions you give, the
more opportunities to disobey.
Too few.Children may sometimes seem
disobedient because no one has taken the time to
give them clear information on what is expected.
Too vague. Shouting your sons name, then
pausing and frowning because he is jumping on
the couch might not be of much help if he has also
just teased his sister. State clearly what
behaviours you find unacceptable.
Asking, not telling: Dont phrase an instruction
as a question. If you ask: Would you like to go to
bed now? be prepared for them to say: No.
Poorly timed.Asking your child to do something
while they are busy watching their favourite
television show will probably result in them
ignoring the instruction.
Shouting from a distance.Instructions shouted
from one room to another are often ignored
simply because parents are not there to back up
the instruction.
Emotionally laden.Children react to theemotional tone of what parents say to them.
Calling children stupid or an idiot shows
disapproval of the child rather than the childs
behaviour. Although it can be difficult, parents
should work to control expressions of anger when
giving children instructions.
If you want your child to stop doing something,
remember to tell them what to do instead. Also
tell them the consequence of disobeying. Give
your child time to cooperate and praise themwhen they do soor carry out the consequence if
they refuse.

Parents of 4 year olds - Immunisations
Children who have turned 4 years of age are
scheduled to received 2 injections, MMR (Measles,
Mumps and Rubella) and DTPIPV (Diphtheria,
Tetanus, Whooping Cough, and Polio) vaccines.
These are booster doses to ensure good levels of
coverage against these life threatening diseases.
These immunisations can now be given as early
as 3.5 years of age.
From 1 July 2012, families will need to have their
children fully immunized or have an approved
exemption to receive the Family Tax Benefit Part
A end-of-year supplement.
The supplement, worth $726 per child, will now
only be paid once a child is fully immunised at
one, two and five years of age, or has an approved
exemption. This means that over the three immunisation
check points, families will have an incentive of
more than $2,100.
If your child still requires his/her immunisations
please see your usual immunisation provider or
alternatively you are welcome to make an
appointment for our Tuesday / Thursday
Population Health Immunisation Clinic, in
Albany. This is a free service, and appointments
can be made by phoning 98427500.
If you have any questions relating toimmunisation please do not hesitate to contact me
