Anatomic features
Application:
the tubers are used as food product; for production of alcohol, inulin and
fructose.
Helianthus tuberosus - Earth Apple, Jerusalem Potato
or Topinambour
Helianthus annuus - Sunflower
Aplication: the fruits are used for production of fatty
oil, which are used in different branches of industry
(e.g., in food industry, in medicine as a base of
ointments, plasters and pulverizing).
The cake left after separation of fatty oil is used as
addition in fodder.
The flowers are used for improvement of the appetite.
Application:
the herb and its preparations are used as sedative for CNS, diaphoretic,
bitter-aromatic, stomachic; as anticonvulsant for epilepsy and
neurasthenia, as vermifuge, for normalization of the menstrual cycle.
Artemisia vulgaris - Mugwort
Application:
the herb and its preparations are used as aromatic for improving of appetite
and secretion, as cholagogue and sedative. Essential oil is used as anti-
inflammatory, antiseptic, for eczema, burns and asthma.
Artemisia absinthium - Wormwood or Absinthium)
Application:
the inflorescences and their
preparations are used as cholagogue,
spasmolytic, anti-inflammatory,
diaphoretic, disinfectant and sedative.
The inflorescences are used externally
as antiseptic, astringent and softener
drug, for hair strengthening.
Chamomilla recutita (Matricaria recutita or M.
chamomilla) - Matricaria or Wild Chamomile
Application:
the inflorescences and their preparations
are used as cholagogue, spasmolytic,
anti-inflammatory, diaphoretic,
disinfectant and sedative.
The inflorescences are used externally
as antiseptic, astringent and softening
drug, for hair strengthening.
Chamomilla suaveolens (Matricaria matricarioides) - Wild
Marigold or Rayless Camomile
Achillea millefolium - Yarrow or Milfoil
Aplication:
the herb, the leaves, the inflorescences and their preparations are used
as haemostatic for intestinal, nasal, teeth and wound bleedings;
as anti-inflammatory, cholagogue, bactericidal and sedative drug.
Bidens tripartita - Beggar-ticks
Application:
the herb and its preparations are used as cholagogue, diaphoretic,
bactericidal, diuretic; it improves digestion and normalize metabolism.
Externally it is used as anti-inflammatory, wound healing, for diathesis,
psoriasis and seborrhea.
Application:
the preparations of this plant stimulate CNS in the state of psychic
depression, physical and nervous exhaustion; they improve immunity and
sexual potency; they are also used for acute and chronic inflectional
diseases.
Echinacea purpurea - Coneflower or
Black Sampson
Application: the inflorescences and their preparations are used
as effective cholagogue, anti-inflammatory, diuretic; for
stimulation of pancreas and stomach secretion.
Helichrysum arenarium - Yellow
Everlasting or Immortelle
Tanacetum vulgare - Tansy
Application:
the inflorescences and medicines from them
are used as a phytoncidic, astringent agent;
for treating hepatitis, cholecystitis and
ascaridiasis.
The herb is used as an insecticide.
Application: the underground organs and their preparations are used as
astringent, diuretic, anti-inflammatory, improve appetite and digestion. The
essential oil is used as antiseptic, vermifuge and anti-inflammatory.
Inula helenium - Elecampane inula
Arctium lappa (or Lappa major) - Great Burdock or
Great Bur
Aplication:
the roots and their preparations are used as diuretic, cholagogue, for improve
metabolism.
Externally they are used for eczema, acnes, furuncles, podagra and
rheumatism. The preparation of “burdock oil” is used for hair strengthening.
Tussilago farfara - Coltsfoot, Bull's
Foot or Sow-foot
Application:
the leaves and inflorescences are used as astringent, emollient,
anti-inflammatory, sudorific and cholagogue.
Calendula officinalis - Pot Marigold
Application:
the inflorescences and their preparations are used as anti-inflammatory,
bactericidal, cholagogue and spasmolytic.
Taraxacum officinale - Dandelion
Application: the inflorescences, leaves and roots are used as bitter for
improving of appetite and the function of digestive tract, for prophylactics of
atherosclerosis.
The juice is used for diseases of urinary bladder.
Silybum marianum - Lady's-milk
Application:
the seeds are used as cholagogue.
The seeds powder is used in liver and gastrointestinal
tract diseases.
Centaurea cyanus - bluebottle or cornflower
Application:
the marginal flowers are used as a diuretic, cholagogue, antipyretic medicine.
The flower tea is used for renal and cardiac edemas.

During the lecture we got acquainted with:
The general characteristic of Asteraceae Family.
Morphological-ecological characteristics, the
presence of certain groups of biologically active
substances, resources, significance, the use of
representatives of Asteraceae Family.
