ARCHDIOCESE OF CHICAGODear Sisters and Brothers in Christ,
On Mother's Day, each of us will have an opportunityto join in the Church's sacred mission of charity throughour donations to Catholic Charities Mother's Day Col-lection. Funds raised from the collection will be usedto help struggling families and individuals living rightin our own communities.
With 150 programs at 164 locations throughout Cookand Lake Counties, Catholic Charities annually servesmore than one million poor and vulnerable people ofall ages, races, religions and economic backgrounds.Catholic Charities helps people overcome the challengesof poverty, hunger, homelessness, joblessness, mentalillness, abuse, and aging. Low-income families, at-riskchildren, courageous veterans, and vulnerable seniorsrely on Catholic Charities for food, clothing, shelter, and a host of other services.
Supporting the extraordinary work ofCatholic Charitiestakes on special significance during this Jubilee Yearof Mercy. By designating the Jubilee Year of Mercy,Pope Francis has provided us a graced opportunity toappreciate more deeply how the mercy ofGod shapesour lives and, at the same time, how we can bring thatmercy into the world through our own actions and theway we live our lives. Catholic Charities exemplifieshow we are to transmit His love and compassion to ourbrothers and sisters who are facing tremendous difficulties.
Mother's Day is the one day set aside for CatholicCharities to request the financial support of each ofus in the parishes. Please show your support for thegreat mercy of the Church by contributing to CatholicCharities during the second collection, or make yourdonations directly to Catholic Charities at 721 N. LaSalleSt., Chicago, IL 60654, or www.catholiccharities.net/donate.Now is a particularly important time for us to givegenerously, as Catholic Charities must contend withthe repercussions of the Illinois state budget crisis, which has placed tremendous financial stress on theirability to serve the poor and vulnerable.
During this Jubilee Year, let us take up the Pope's chal-lenge to bring the transformative power ofGod's infinitemercy into our world. Working together, we can raiseup our brothers and sisters in need, providing compassionand concrete support to propel them to a new life filledwith hope and dignity. Many thanks for considering agift to Catholic Charities. May God bless you and yourfamilies.
Sincerely yours in Christ,
Most Revered Blase J. CupichArchbishop ofChicago

AscensionAscension does not mean Jesus is gone. Indeed, the Com-munion antiphon today echoes the Gospel: "Behold, I amwith you always, even to the end of the age, alleluia."In the time between the Ascension and the SecondComing, then, our task is to recognize Christ all aroundus, especially in the poor; honoring them is indeed akey part of our Gospel mission. Jesus commissionedfollowers to proclaim the good newsand to follow him, on our earthlyjourney and to our heavenly desti-nation. He's far from gone! Heis among us and in us. We arereflections of his presence inthe world.
