Vorwort Introduction

simply concrete - „Macht was mit Beton!“ ist das Motto des Semesterprojektes im

Wintersemester 2007. Am Ende soll ein Möbel entstehen, völlig frei, welches, wie groß und

wie schwer. Ein Möbel aus Beton? Abgesehen davon, dass Beton längst in den Wohnbereich

Einzug gehalten hat, ist dies eine besondere gestalterische Herausforderung: Kann ein Möbel

aus Beton leicht sein? Wie dünn kann ich gehen? Welche Formen sind möglich? Wie gelingt

der erste Guss? 14 Studenten aus den Fachbereichen Innenarchitektur und Industriedesign

experimentieren ein Semester lang mit Rezepturen, Zuschlagstoffen, Formen und Techniken.

Sie starten mit Accessoires aus Beton, um die Qualitäten und Tücken des Werkstoffs Beton

kennenzulernen. Mit diesen Erfahrungen gehen sie in die Vollen: Aufwendige Schalungen

entstehen, es wird gerührt und gegossen und das Ergebnis ist ungewiß. Luftblasen,

Ausblühungen und feine Haarrisse können nicht ganz ausgeschlossen werden, aber das

macht den haptischen und visuellen Reiz dieses Werkstoffs aus. Es entstehen Tische,

Hocker, Regale, Küchen, Garderoben, Liegen, Stehtische mit verblüffend glatter Oberfläche

und geringen Mateialstärken.

Damit war jedoch noch lang nicht Schluß: Eine Auswahl der Produkte und Möbel ist über

die Firma Betoniu zu erwerben, die das Projekt initiiert und gefördert hat.

simply concrete - „design the concrete!“ is the task for 14 interior architecture and industrial

design students in winter 2007. The aim is to create a piece of furniture out of concrete.

Starting point is the development of little products. This helps to get used to this unique

material.Now the concrete designs get a bigger scale and become furniture: molding shapes

are built, the concrete consistency as well as the reinforcement is altered for each particular

design. The variety of different furniture and the quality of the surfaces prooves a real cre-

ative potential: concrete furniture like tables, shelves, chairs, kitchen designs are exhibited.

Concrete and its raw image has changed to a domestic material with very smooth surfaces

and filigree constructions .

Some of them are already produced in series by betoniu. Thank them for the support.

Mars & Venus

Bei Mars &Venus verschmelzen Schale und Tischflä-che miteinander. Die samtige Oberfläche des Betons und die weich anmutenden Mulden in den Flächen kontrastieren mit dem harten Material. Ein reizvolles Spiel zwischen Material und Form lässt Beton in einer neuen und ungewohnten Art erscheinen. The design of Mars & Venus adds both together:an organic shaped shell and a plain table-surface. The velvety impression of the concrete and the soft looking mouldings within the surfaces create a con-trast to this solid material. This playful composition between material and shape makes the concrete ap-pear in a new and unusual way.

E.T.A. Litfaß column shelfE.T.A. Litfaß vereint die Ästhetik einer Säule mit der Funktion eines variablen Möbels. Der Betonring ist das Grundelement und lässt sich je nach Funkti-on als Hocker, Tisch, Stehtisch oder Säule, beliebig hoch stapeln. Mit mattiertem Acrylglas als additives Material, welches für (Rollen)Fuß, Lampenschirm, Tisch- und Sitzfläche, sowie Einlegeboden einge-setzt ist, erfährt das Möbel durch die Einwirkung von Licht eine optische Leichtigkeit. Durch Einprä-gungen und Auswaschungen der Oberfläche des Be-tons lassen sich verschiedene haptische und optische Erlebnisse erzielen.

E.T.A. Litfaß combines the aesthetics of a column with the function of a variable piece of furniture. A ring of concrete stands as basic element, which, de-pending on its function, can be adapted to a stool, table, cocktail-table or column by stacking as high as one likes. Matt Perspex as additional material, which is in-serted as shelf and forms a lampshade and the top surface of table and chairs. It is also the base for wheels. The translucency of Perspex adds a light ap-pearance to this design.The embossed concrete creates both: a haptic and optical experience.

Klemmbrett a board in between

Klemmbrett ist ein dreiteiliger Tisch, dessen Füße

aus je ca. 80kg bewährtem Beton bestehen. Die in

der Länge variable Holztischplatte wird einfach

zwischen die beiden Betonfüße geklemmt. So kön-

nen am Klemmbrett 2 bis 8 Personen bequem Platz

finden.Das Besondere bei diesem Entwurf, sind die beiden

Betonfüße, welche in sich ausgesteift frei stehen

können. Diese sind komplett in sich ausgesteift und

können daher frei stehen.

Durch die Formgebung der Füße besitzt das Klem-

mbrett eine sehr solide und stabile Anmutung.

Klemmbrett is a Table, which consists of three com-

ponents: two reinforced concrete table-legs of each

80 kg and a timber board in between. The timber

board is variable in size; it offers a table for two to

eight people. Each concrete element is structurally

braced; its shape makes it free standing. This design

uses the coated steel reinforcement at the upper end

as attachment hook for centred timber board. The

organic shape of the concrete elements creates a fili-

gree impression.

The total weight of this is 180 kg, which makes the

table appear solid and stabile. Timber and concrete

have each a thickness of 3 cm, which enables a flush

fitting connection.

Halma Duo

Angestiftet von Betongewichten zur Stabilisierung von Tafeln und Schildern im Außenbereich, ist ein Baukastensystem von Betonfüßen entstanden, die verschiedenen Möbeln mit unterschiedlichen Ansprüchen einen festen Stand geben.Ein Stehhocker mit weichem Sitzring stüzt sich in einen Betonkegel, dessen Sockel eine farbige Manschette umgreift, die wie der Ring aus weichem Polyurethan besteht. Dazugehörend ein filigraner Stehtisch, dessen Fuß sich zu dem klassischen Betonkegel um eine Fußplatte (Stahl) und einen zusätzlichen Kegelstumpf (Beton) ergänzt.Passend zur Kollektion entstand in gleicher Materialität ein Kleiderständer mit gefräster Harkenscheibe und Betonfuß mit Zusatzkegel.Die von der Kollektion bevorzugten Standorte sind Cafe´s, Werkskantinen oder Empfangsbereiche.

This modular system of concrete-stands is inspired from ties of concrete for keeping exterior signs and displays in place. It is designed to provide a solid stand for a series of furniture-pieces. With a soft seating surface, this stool is based on a concrete cone. It is covered, like the seat, with a coloured polyurethane collar.Part of the set is also a filigree cocktail table with the standard concrete base, which is stacked onto a truncated concrete cone. This additional cone pro-vides a steel disk, which serves as foot stand.A matching hat stand has been designed with the identical choice of materials, and offers a machined disk of hooks on top. The hat stand is stacked on an extra concrete cone.

This collection on furniture is created for cafes, can-teens or foyers.

Roll Ich I’m rolling

Pause bis zum zweiten Akt, im Foyer nehmen wir Platz auf "Roll ich", und mal sehen wie nah wir uns mit dem Premierensekt kommen.Drei Sitze, einen für mich, einen für dich und die da, die ist auch noch nett. Zwei Meter Länge zum rollen. Eichensitze rollen gut in der Nut "made of Beton".Bisschen kantig hat noch keinem geschadet. So setz dich doch.

ON THE BLOCK

Das Bett, bei dem vier robuste Betonfüße das gesamte Bettgestell tragen. Der Aufbau geht allein, minutenschnell und einfach per Hand ohne jegliches Werkzeug. Ähnlich einer Blockhütte werden die vier Seitenelemente zusammengesteckt und in die geschlitzten Betonfüße eingefügt. On the Block ist richtig komplett mit Betthaupt, Beton Beistelltisch und Lampe, die durch Metallverbinder zusätzlich an das Bettgestell gesteckt werden können. In Sachen Gewicht ist On the Block mit seinen 25 kg ein echtes Fliegengewicht unter den Betonmöbeln.On the BlockThis is a bed on four solid blocks of concrete. It is easy to assemble, without the need for any tools. Like the principal of a wooden cabin, the four side elements are placed in the slots of the concrete block. On the Block is complete, with a raised bed-back, a side table and a lamp, which are attached to the main frame of the bed with metal connections.Compares to other pieces of concrete-furniture, On the Block is quite a lightweight.

Waschtisch No.1 Washing Stand

Der Waschtisch No.1 zeichnet sich durch eine klare

Formsprache aus, die sinnvoll der Funktion folgt. Das

Möbel besteht aus Waschtisch- und Spiegelschrank.

Beide bilden eine gestalterische Einheit und assoziieren

Klarheit, Reinheit und Hygiene. Der Waschtisch wird

als Betonelement gefertigt und integriert Siphon

und Anschlüsse. Die Oberfläche des Betons ist

entsprechend dem Lotusblüteneffekt versiegelt, um

den hygienischen Ansprüchen gerecht zu werden.

Alle Oberflächen des Möbels sind leicht zu reinigen.

Der Spiegelschrank bietet Stauraum für Badutensilien

und hat im Innenraum eine Tiefe von 10 cm sowie

drei variable Ablageflächen. Die Tür ist beidseitig

verspiegelt und läst sich um 180 Grad öffnen.

This washing stand appears as clearly defined shape,

which follows its functions. This piece of furniture

is both: washing stand and mirror cabinet. Both ele-

ments stand as one unit and resemble clearness and

purity and hygiene.

The washing stand is made of cast concrete and con-

tains siphon and plumbing. The concrete surface is

varnished, which meets hygienic requirements and

makes it easy to clean. This mirror cabinet offers

storage space for bathroom utensils on three variable

shelves of 10 cm depth. The door has mirrors on

each side and opens at an angle of 180 degrees.

Doalegtsdiniedoa... Recliner SeatDie Betonliege ist durch ihre Materialeigenschaften sowohl für den Außen-, als auch für den Innenbereich geeignet. Die geringe Materialstärke und die lebendig geschwungene Form der Fläche, lassen die Liege regelrecht über dem Boden schweben.Eine Besonderheit ist die verwendete Bewehrung, die aus zwei Lagen Kohlefasergewebe besteht. Die Materialstärke der Liege beträgt nur 20 mm und mit einem Gewicht von nur 45 kg erhält das Material Beton eine völlig neue Erscheinung.

This recliner seat made of concrete is perfect for the exterior and interior en-vironment. The thin material and the organic shape create an impression of a floating piece of furniture. The concrete is reinforced with two layers of carbon-fibre textiles. This particular technique made it possible to produce a thickness of only two cm. The thin material and a weight of only 45 kg create a new ap-pearance of concrete. Instead of casting the concrete, it had to be plastered in a laminated moulding shape, which requires a special consistency.

An ihr können Gäste oder Besucher schnell und bequem ihre Getränke entgegennehmen, abstellen oder verweilen.In Anlehnung an die klassische Minibar im Hotel befindet sich eine kleine Kühlbox für mindestens 9 Flaschen im unteren Bereich des Möbels. Überhänger Cantilever

… die Büroküche, die bleibende Eindrücke hinterlässt.Das schmale Küchenelement bildet einen Raum um das Herzstück einer jeden Küche: das Waschbecken. Über diesen befindet sich im speziellen vertikalen Geschirrschrank Teller, Tassen und Besteck für 4 Kollegen. Das Geschirr hält durch die leichte Neigung der Wand und den Formschluss an der Betonplatte. Fehlt eine Garnitur in der Wand, weiß man genau wer seinen Aufwasch nicht gemacht hat …

Das C-förmige Grundelement könnte auch andere Funktionen übernehmen: Anstelle des Waschbeckens giebt es eine Herdplatte, über der ein Topf und ein Rührlöffel in die Wand eingelassen sind.

… a kitchen for office-spaces, which creates a lasting impression. This narrow kitchen element builds a space around a kitchen’s centrepiece: the sink. Vertical insertions provide space for cups, plates and cutlery for four colleagues. The Dishes are kept in place by the angled back-wall. If a piece of cutlery is missing-you can tell exactly who has a bit of washing up to do...The C-shaped basic element is intended go get several different functions, other than a sink: for example an oven. Pans, pots and a stirring-spoon would be placed in the wall above it.

Would you like a bit more?

With a size of 3,18 x 1,20 meters, this dining table

is a rather large one. Two freestanding concrete

elements form the base for a silk finished sheet of

Perspex. This enables the user to guess the silhouette

of the table-legs, without directly displaying them.

No matter what happens underneath the table, details

are not disclosed.

Der Esstisch „Tafelbeton“ ist mit 3,18 x 1,20m einer der großzügigen Art.Zwei freistehende Betonelemente tragen die einseitig satinierte Acrylglasplatte.Durch das gedämpfte, die Platte durchdringende Licht wird das tragende Gestell inszeniert jedoch nicht preisgegeben. So lässt sich einerseits erahnen was unter dem Tisch passiert, andererseits bleiben Details im Nebel.

Zick Zack das Bücherregal - Nicht alles im Lot!Zick Zack ist ein außergewöhnliches Regal für die heimische Literatur in pigmentierten Beton und lackierten Stahlblech. Die schrägen Regalböden bieten den Büchern einen soliden Stand und dienen gleichzeitig der Aussteifung der vertikalen Betonteile.Die Seitenwände bestehen aus vier Betonelementen. Für die Fertigung der Betonteile benötigt man nur eine Form die mit den Befestigungen für die Regalböden gegossen werden und anschließend für die überliegende Seite gedreht werden kann.

Zick Zack the shelf – Not quite perpendicular!Zick Zack is an unusual piece of furniture, made of concrete and varnished metal sheets, for your literature. The angular shelves provide a solid stand for books and brace the vertical side elements structurally. To make the production easier, the side elements of concrete consist of four pieces. This process requires only one casting form; attachment points for the shelves are already cast into the concrete. After casting, each unit is rotated and stacked on top of the other.

Schnelle Küche – die Kochinsel ist von beiden Seiten bedienbar. Die Form ist abgeleitet vom Bewegungsprozess. Auch die Bedienfelder sind danach gestaltet und werden vom Kräuterbeet, dem Ausgangspunkt für jede gute Küche bis zur Kochplatte und zum Essplatz immer größer. Alles ist auf das Kochen und das Essen ausgerichtet.

Schnelle Küche – a cooking-module, which is accessible from all sides. It’s shape is inspired by the process of movement. The worktop also is designed after this idea; it increases in size from the bed of herbs (the source of good cooking) to the cooking elements up to the dining area. The design focuses on cooking and eating.

Produkte

Eine erste Aufgabe für die Studenten zu Beginn des Projektes

bestand in dem Entwurf und der Kleinserienproduktion eines

Produktes aus Beton für den Studentenshop "10 Liter De-

sign". Diese Aufgabe war eine wichtige Vorbereitung für das

eigentliche Möbelprojekt, bei der erste Erfahrungen mit dem

Material, im Schalungsbau und mit Betontechniken gesammelt

werden konnten.

Es entstand eine Kollektion an kleinen Designobjekten, die im

burg-designshop nach wie vor käuflich zu erwerben sind.

The brief for the students at the beginning of this project was to

design a product of concrete, which can be produced as small

series for the “10 Litre Design” student-shop. This was a useful

preparation to get to know concrete as material, but also to gain

experiences in particular techniques of casting and moulding.

A collection of design-objects was created, which is now availa-

ble at the burg-design shop.
