Fun questions getting students to talk
Activity type:: this activity involves students asking each other personal questions in orderto develop fluency.
Level:Intermediate students and above
Teacher's notes:
1. There are a variety of ways that you can get the students to ask the questions whichare listed below.
a. You can dictate the questions i.e. read out some of the questions and get thestudents to write them down. Once you have done this, ask the students to read
the questions out to you. Check that they have written the questions downcorrectly.
b. You can stick the questions around the classroom. Tell the students to minglearound the room. When they get to a question, they should stop and ask the
nearest student to them the question.
c. If you want to add novelty value, play music. When you stop the music ask thestudents to find the question nearest to them on the wall and to discuss it.
d. Alternatively you can hand out one question per student and ask them to mingleand ask as many people they can in class the question. At the end of the mingleactivity, tell the whole class to give feedback on the questions that they asked.
NOTE: all of the above ideas are useful for students who feel inhibited when
speaking. When mingling, they do not feel so much on the spot and are morelikely to speak.
2. Once the students have mingled, do necessary error corrections. For homework, youcan ask the students to write their own answers to the questions that they would like towrite about. This will further practice the language that they have used.

If the picture fitsby Cassandra Cretney
Type of activity: This is a speaking activity in which students guess other students' drawings.
Level: Any (instructions can be adapted for any level but activity works best with pre-intermediates and up).
Teacher's notes:
1. Begin by drawing something on the board and asking the students to guess what it is.Encourage them to ask questions e.g. is it a .? Is it something I can eat etc. Once the
students have guessed what the picture is, hand out, on slips of paper, a drawing
instruction to each student. Examples are given below. Make sure that each studenthas a different instruction and ensure that they do not show each other their
instructions.
2. Instruct the students to draw what the instruction tells them to. Remind them not toshow each other what they are drawing.
3. Put the students into pairs and ask them to show each other their completed drawings. Each student guesses what the other student has drawn.
4. If time teacher could pin up all the drawings around the classroom so that the studentscan get up and see everyones drawing and then get each student to give a brief
summary of what they have drawn and why.
Note:Students will probably try to spend a long time drawing. Set a strict time limit and go
round encouraging the students. Make it clear that it is drawing ability is not importantspeaking English is the aim.

Five Letter Challenge
Activity type: this is a vocabulary / spelling game in which students have to guess
the word that the teacher is thinking of by working out which letters the word contains. It is a tough game so this is best played with people who like a challenge!
Level: Intermediate and above
The origin of this game is unknown but it has been seen played in many places around
the world.
Teacher's notes:
1. Explain the game to the students; tell them that you are going to think of a fiveletter word. They then have to guess the word by saying other five letter words.
When they say the other words you will tell them how many similar letters arecontained in both words. There are two main rules; the words always containfive letters and the never contain two or more of the same letter.
2. For example: the teacher chooses a five letter word plane.3. The students say another five letter word to try to guess what the word is. They
may say, for example hurts.
4. The teacher says that none of the letters are contained in the word. Thestudents can therefore cross off those letters.
5. The students then say plain. The teachers reply is four; the students knowthat four letters spell the teachers word and one letterdoesnt.
8/13/2019 juegos y tcnicas para speaking
14/15
6. They now have to decide which one is the odd one out so their best tactic is tosay a word very near to the word that they just said e.g. slain.
7. There are three letters the same and so the students know that s is incorrect.8. The students probably know that p is contained in the word, they also know
that the other letters are probably l a i or n. They then say plain as a
guess and of course they are right.
9. This game can take some time. The students could write down the entirealphabet and then cross off the letters as they are playing the game this mayhelp them to keep track of what has been said.
