Punta Arenas, capital provincial.
A mediados

Parque Marino Francisco Coloane.
Pali Aike y cueva Fell.
Parque Nacional Pali Aike.
laguna Ana.
Sector y cementerio Buque Quemado.
Faro y museo Punta Delgada.

Tierra del FuegoTierra del Fuego Island is located at the southern tip of South America. Its limits are
the Strait of Magellan on the north; Beagle Channel on the south, Atlantic Ocean on
the east and the Pacific Ocean on the west.
This island is considered to be one of the thirty biggest islands around the world.
However it is divided between Chile and Argentina. The former occupies the west
and the latter the east.
The capital of Tierra del Fuego is Porvenir. The are to municipalities in Tierra del
Fuego, Primavera on the north and Timaukel on the south of the island.
The name of this island, “Tierra del Fuego” has its origins, in the perception the
first sailors who explored the coast of the island. From the sea they were able to
see many bonfires used by Selk’nam and Yámanas in order to protect themselves
from the cold. As despite the weather conditions, they did not use enough
clothes.
They even carried bonfires, inside of canoes made out of “lenga” crust (Nothofagus
pumilio). Which were used for fishing and hunting marine mammals. The native
people called this island “Karukinka”, which means “our land”.
RMUNICIPALITY OF PORVENIR
The first inhabitants. The Selk’nam or Onas were the first inhabitants of this island.
More than four thousand natives occupied the north area and the forests south of
Tierra del Fuego.
They hunted guanacos and birds. And lived in circle shaped huts, made out of
trunks, leather and branches. They were tall and well built, however they had a
much more aggressive personality than the other indigenous. Once they started
exploiting gold mines and began with the sheep breading industry. They were extinct
and displaced from their lands by settlers. Even with the support of the Salesian
missionaries, Onas did not survive from living in closed areas or from
European diseases.
Porvenir, provincial capital. Porvenir is the capital of Tierra del Fuego province,
founded in 1894. It has a population of 5.406 inhabitants, most of whom are
Chilotes (from Chiloe Island) and Croatian descendants who were motivated to
come to these lands by the presence of gold. In this small town you can find hotels,
restaurants and all basic needs.

patrimony of the city. La Casa de Piedra (stone house) is the oven for cal elaboration,
which used to be extracted from a near mine. Other houses that describe the
architecture of Tierra del Fuego are: The ex Council building, DoymoUrsic house, Cruz
Roja building, Croata Club and Miguel Radonich’s house, where the first cinema of
Tierra del Fuego used to function. And later on the
place where José Bohr started his career as an artist.

resaltan Darwin, Shackleton y Amudsen.
RPUERTO WILLIAMS, CAPITAL PROVINCIAL
Puerto Williams, capital provincial.
turbas junto a lagos y ríos.
Antarctic ProvinceAntarctica Province is considered as part of the Magellan Region. It encounters
Islands and seas of Beagle Channel, among them: Navarino Island, Cabo de Hornos
and Chilean Antarctica. The capital is Puerto Williams, gateway to Antarctic nature
and stunning beauty of the end of the world.
The highlights of this province are its biological diversity and indomitable landscapes
and essentially the ethnic group Yagán, which is one of the most rudimentary native
cultures. It is also one of the most amazing cultures because of their linguistic
tradition and survival abilities in glaciers, archipelagos, strong winds and hard
environment conditions. International recognized naturalists and explorers such
as Darwin, Shackleton and Amudsen described part of the history of these distant
lands.
RMUNICIPALITY OF PUERTO WILLIAMS
Puerto Williams, provincial capital. It is the most southern village in the world. It is
located at the north side of Navarino Island, on the shore of Beagle Channel. Behind
it there are granite spires of the Andes Patagonian called “Los Dientes de
Navarino”. Three years after the city was founded (1953) they changed its name to
Puerto Williams as a way to honor the Irish mariner Juan Williams, who is registered
in Chilean sovereignty history of these lands. This Port is an important
strategic place for traffic between the Pacific and the Atlantic Ocean and it also
plays a key role in the Chilean politics on the Antarctic Territory. Puerto Williams’
population is approximately 2500 inhabitants, composed of: founding settlers and
officers of the Chilean Navy and their families.
People in Puerto Williams are kind and always willing to help their visitors.
This city has public services provided by the Cape Horns Municipality and provincial
Governance. It also has banks, accommodations, connectivity, transport and food,
so visitors can have a pleasant and comfortable visit.
In its origins, Puerto Williams caught the attention of the colonizers due to its
gold mines on adjacent Islands, however today it is due to its beautiful nature and
quietness.
Navarino Island. is located at the southern tip of the American continent in
front of the south coast of Tierra del Fuego, north of the Wollaston and Cape
de Horns Islands. Navarino Island has an area of 2.473 km2 and a great diverse
geography due to “Los Dientes de Navarino”. This mountain range is filled with
Magellan forests, towards the south there is an extensive peat plateau that allows
the existence of small lakes and abundant fauna. On this Island more than 500
archaeological sites of the Yagán culture have been found, some of which are more
than 8000 years old. Yámanas, who navigated through the fjords and channels of
this extensive dismantled area, are also called nomad native canoeists, collectors
and marine hunters.
Villa Ukika. This village is considered a historical attraction as it is inhabited by
the last Yagán descendants, which were transferred into this region from Bahía
Mejillones, Róbalo and Punta Truco in 1960, so they would have a better life.
Nowadays, families still practice fishing and traditional craftwork activities. In Villa
Ukika, there is a Yagan handicraft workshop called KipaAkar. There you can find
traditional craftwork made out of reed and native wood.
Puerto Williams Church. “Nuestra Señora del Carmen” is one of the highlights of this
city for its peculiar architectonic style.
Inside the church you will find the Virgin, protector of sealion hunters and sea-men
who go for adventures on frail boats to distant sea regions.
Yacht Club of Puerto Williams. Ships from around the world dock on this nautical
club before beginning their navigation route around Cape Horn, Beagle Channel and
the mountainous landscape of Navarino Island.
Revenue Cutter Yelcho’s bow. In the centre of Puerto Williams, next to the high
school, you can see the bow of Yelcho cutter a Chilean ship that rescued the
Antarctica expedition commanded by the Irish citizen Ernest Shackleton
in Isla Elefante, in Chilean Antarctic territory. The ship was built in 1906 and was
120 feet long.
Cabo de Hornos’ Flora. This region is one of the most pristine areas around the
world. It has about 5% of the total most diverse mosses and lichens that form a
microcosm called “tiny forests of Cape Horn”
In flat areas the landscape is covered by green bush, bunchgrass and murtilla
(a shrub that grows in Chile). Near to the sea is the Magellan baccharis, on the
highlands you can find peat moss near lakes and rivers. The principal trees are
lenga, coigüe, fiirre, lefiadura and ciruelillo.
Ethnobotanic Park Omora. The park’s name means “hummingbird” in Yagan. Here
you can observe the botanic abundance of the area mixed with the Yagan culture,
making this the perfect place for scientific tourism, and a natural laboratory to
study the most southern forest ecology.
Omorapark encourages responsible tourism and offers an opportunity to the
environmental and economic sustain of the southern tip of America.
Puerto Toro. 100 years ago, Puerto Toro was one of the most important southern
villages of Tierra del Fuego, due to the gold fever. Nowadays, its most precious good
is crab, the prized southern King crab. In crab fishing season (July- November) it is
possible to see thousands of artisanal fishing vessels that
extract this precious marine resource.
Caleta Wulaia. It is located in the occidental coast of Navarino Island, south of
Murray Channel. It has a high historical and archaeological value. During the
nineteenth century the coastal and mountainous landscape was the main meeting
place of Yaganes and English missionaries. It was also the location where Robert Fitz
Roy and Charles Darwin disembarked aboard the sailboat “Beagle”, and the place
where the story of Jemmy Button and the killing of missionaries occurred.
Caleta Mejillones. It was the last Indian redoubt. About a hundred representatives
and descendants of the Yagan civilization inhabited the area from 1830 to 1967,
until many were transferred to Villa Ukika. There is a historical Indigenous cemetery
declared national monument.
HIKINGIN NAVARINO ISLAND
Navarino Island is a territory of mountains, glaciers and lakes, perfect for hiking.
There are 2 main routes: the first one is Cerro La Bandera which takes about a day.
The second is Dientes de Navarino route that takes about 4 or 5 days. It is
recommended to take all the necessary equipment.
Cerro La Bandera. Part of Sendero de Chile, Cerro La Bandera route is a trek of 4.5
km, starting and finishing in Puerto Williams. It is a route of medium difficulty. It is
a simple trekking that ascends through a well-defined path, with good signposting
that starts in La Virgen waterfall, about 3 km west from Isla Navarinos’ downtown.
Towards the Róbalo valley, surrounded by Magellan Forests, the route ascends up
to 610m until La Bandera hill. In this spot you will enjoy an amazing view of Puerto
Williams, Beagle Channel, and Tierra del Fuego, while Dientes de Navarino spreads
at your back. The main recommendation is to be careful with the strong winds.
Dientes de Navarino Circuit. Dientes de Navarino is the most southern trekking
route in the world and a wonderful place to practice this sport. Starting in Puerto
Williams, you will go to La Bandera hill and then continue walking through series
of hills reaching over 1.100m high. The view in this spot is dominated by frozen
lagoons, vegetation, thigh woods, rock slopes and snowy mountains, from where
the view of the Beagle Channel and the southern area of Navarino Island are
stunning. During the ascending journey, there are camping zones and tourists
should always consider the rough climate conditions present throughout the year.
There are not many animals in high altitudes but condors sighting is quite often.
Downhill you will reach Laguna Guanacos (a small lake) where you can see beavers
on rivers and you will have a permanent view of the Beagle Channel, until you
return to
Puerto Williams. The route is not difficult for a fit person, so it is an ideal spot for
trekking, rock climbing and hiking.
Horse-riding at the end of the world. From Puerto Williams you can organize horse-
riding excursions in its surroundings; enjoy the stunning nature, dominated by the
Beagle Channel waters and the mountain range Dientes de Navarino. While
Parque Nacional Alberto De Agostini.

walking on the tracks you may see some archaeological places that mark the
presence of Yagan history in this island.
Sport fishing. In this area there are many lakes suitable for sport fishing. One of
them is Navarino Lake, a lake for trout fishing, located on the eastern central plane
of the island. You can drive to Caleta Eugenia (cove) and then after a 6 hour walk
and with the help of a fishing guide arrive to the river bank.
Windhond Lake, Piluhejan and nearby rivers are other good places for recreational
fishing. It is recommended to spend the night at the place and be prepared for the
weather conditions at night.
MUNICIPALITY OF CABO DE HORNOS
Alberto de Agostini National Park. This park has an area of 14.600 km2 and is
composed of all the islands located south of the Strait of Magellan and west
of Navarino Island. One of the greatest attractions is Cordillera Darwin with its
snowdrifts and mountains covered with abundant vegetation. The different colors
of the flora contrast with the ice. You can do eco-touristic activities like walks and
excursions to the Holanda, Italia and Romanche snowdrifts, to name a few. In the
area, some of the most characteristic fauna are red foxes, coypus, sea wolves and
marine elephants, killer whales, whales, otters and penguins.
How to arrive: from Punta Arenas by sea or to Puerto Williams by air.
Local travel agencies offer regular touristic circuits that take 8 days.
Beagle Channel. Beagle Channel is located at the southern tip of South America. It
is a 280 km arm of the Pacific Ocean.
This channel was originally navigated by Yámanas (canoeist) and received its
name in honor of the Beagle ship, which sailed between 1826 and 1830, doing
hydrographic surveys under the command of the captain Phillip Parker King. On
the Beagle’s second journey, commanded by Robert Fitz Roy, travelled the English
naturalist Charles Darwin, who later wrote the evolution of species theory, inspired
on his journey to the end of the world. Beagle Channel limits north with Tierra del
Fuego and south with Seward Islands, Hoste, Lennox and
Navarino. The latter is the place where the Chilean city Puerto Williams is located.
Navigation circuit Punta Arenas and Beagle Channel. There is a cruise line that
departs twice a week, and navigates through the channels and glaciers of the area.
It allows time for trekking, visiting Puerto Williams and, if the weather
conditions are good, navigate to Cape Horn and disembark to visit the end of the
American continent. In Puerto Williams there are also yachts that offer services to
visit the area where the Pacific meets the Atlantic Ocean.
Cabo de Hornos National Park. Located at 160 km (miles) south of Puerto Williams,
this park of 63 thousand hectares is a world Biosphere Reserve. Navigating through
the channels you will see a great amount of islands. Its height does not reach
more than 220 mts, except Cerro Pirámide which has a height of 406 mts. Peat
lands dominate the landscape and the forests are abundant incoigües and canelos
(cinnamon tree). The park is habitat of many mammals, marine birds, and the
nesting spot of the Magellan and Antarctic penguin. You can arrive by air or sea.
Cabo de Hornos. Discovered in 1616 by Dutch ship-owners Shouten and Le Maire
when they were searching for a new route to the Pacific Ocean. For centuries, Cape
Horn has been one of the most difficult challenges that sailors have had to
face, finding themselves upon a great deed. Until Panama Canal was open, in the
early twentieth century, it was the only obligated maritime path to go around the
world. Nowadays, it is the only shipping route towards the white continent, and a
route of great interest for regattas and international nautical competitions. Taking
into account its remote location and the dangers it entails for sailors, it could be
considered as dangerous as the Mount Everest for mountain climbers.
Chapel and lighthouse in Hornos Island. It is the southernmost chapel and
lighthouse of America, administrated by the Chilean Navy, who is there to protect
sovereignty and provide meteorologic services. Navigators normally stop on
the island temporally.
Cabo de Hornos Monument. The sculpture is located on the southernmost island
of the archipelago of Cape Horn. It commemorates those navigators who have lost
their lives in
these seas. The monument is a contour of an albatross’ flight, work of the Chilean
artist José Balcells. Visitors have access to this lookout by walking through a
footpath, feeling the wind and seeing the extreme insular geography.
Cabo de Hornos and surroundings overflight. From Puerto Williams it is possible to
overfly the west by helicopter and see the Beagle, Murray Channel, Wulaia Cove,
Hoste and Wollaston island as well as the legendary Cape Horns. The return trip
goes through the east of Navarino island, overflying Picton, Lennox and Nueva
Island.
ANTARTIC
Located 990 km south of Punta Arenas. It is considered asa scientific and ecologic
treasure that attracts both explorersand travelers, captivated by its beauty. The so
called white continent is a natural reserve dedicated to peace and science.
It has the biggest fresh water reserve of the world but at the same time is the
coldest and driest. Even though their highest peak does not reach more than 5.200
meters, Antarctica is the continent with the highest average altitude above the sea.
It is a land of ice, seas and icebergs, continuation of the Andes, reason why many
people call it “Antartandes”.
Marine Fauna. It is a territory with a unique fauna including blue whales, killer
whales, marine elephants, weddell seals and
emperor penguins, among many others. Penguins are always an attraction to travel
to the Antarctica. There are 17 species and 5 of them nest on the white continent.
In the Antarctica it is possible to observe the different species of animals, take
pictures or film their lifestyle in this hostile, inhospitable and
really amazing environment.
Chilean Antarctic. Chilean Antarctic territory has an area of 1.250.000 km2 and it
extends between the 53° and 90° west meridian of Greenwich, including Shetland
del Sur Island, Antarctica peninsula or Tierra de O’Higgins and adjacent islands.
There are 4 permanent bases and Villa Las Estrellas settlement in Rey Jorge Island.
Antarctic base Presidente Eduardo Frei. This Chilean base is located on Rey Jorge
Island and was founded in 1969 as a meteorological center. In 1980 the airfield
Teniente Marsh was built and in 1984, Villa Las Estrellas, one of the few stable
civil population of the Antarctica was established. It has one of the main scientific
research centers and one of the three meteorological and navigation stations of
the Antarctica.
By plane. There are 4-hour flights from Punta Arenas to San Jorge Island in the
Presidente Frei base. From there, tourists have to walk 2 km by land to reach Villa
las Estrellas.
By Ship. There are cruises that depart from Punta Arenas and Puerto Williams, in a
trip that takes about 11 to 20 days. There are also tourist programs that combine
airplane, cruises or helicopter charter services.
