SUMMER ARRIVES, AND ALL WE THINK ABOUT IS SUN,SAND AND BEACH. IT SEEMS THAT THERE ARE NO

OPTIONS IF YOU ARE IN THE CITY AND DON’T WANT TOFACE TRAFFIC. HOWEVER, WE FORGET THAT TABOGAISLAND IS LITERALLY 20 KMS FROM THE CITY, AND ONLY50 MINUTES BY BOAT. FOR MOST, THIS IS A CONVENIENT,

QUICK AND AFFORDABLE ALTERNATIVE.

PLAYA EN LA CIUDAD

Taboga

The best options for getting to the island are the CalypsoFerry, which leaves the Amador Causeway; and theNational Tours boats which are taken from the YachtClub, right at the entrance of the Causeway. This time, we decided to venture off on the Calypso, whichdeparts at 8:30 am on weekdays, and 8:00 am and 10:30 amon Saturdays, Sundays and holidays. I recommend arriving tothe Causeway early and enjoying the drive to the pier. Ticketsmust be purchased a half hour before departure, allowing ustime for a refreshing drink while we wait to board.Departures to Taboga are punctual. When we board the boat,we realize that most are ready to enjoy the island with hats, the smell of sunblock and laughter suitable for a day off.Joy and excitement is felt in the air. Passengers look to eitherside to decide which place is best; sunbathing on the deck ofthe boat or enjoying the shady ground floor. Then, the moreexperienced travelers reach for life jackets, while wegradually pick ours and think that surely the best ones havealready been taken.Almost without realizing it, the boat is pulling away from thepier. To our right, there are large yachts and to our left thoseknown as "sea beggars" (for not docking at port). Seagulls flyalongside the boat waiting to see fish in its wake. The hourjourney passes quickly. Some passengers take pictures of theboats that are crossing the Canal, while others are lulled tosleep by the hum of the boat. The journey is part of the day’senjoyment. We are getting closer to the island of flowers, as it is alsoknown, a picturesque village with its houses along the hillside.Their colors blend seamlessly; yellow, green, blue, white, orange; and the pier with its small fishing boats that match thevillage. We all arrive excited, wanting to disembark. We head tothe sand, looking for the best spot, and take a cue from thelocals who have already set up their umbrellas and beachchairs. It's time for the first dip in the clear blue-green waters.I recommend walking the streets, and enjoying the colorfulhouses up-close in combination with the diverse plants andflowers. It’s like a cheerful postcard where everything feels alive.

Taboga is a town full of history. There is a small town squarewhich has preserved Santa Catalina cannons. Anotherhighlight is the San Pedro Church, which is the second oldestin the Americas. The newly restored house of FranciscoPizarro, a famous 16th Century Spanish explorer, is anotherpoint of interest. For those who like walking, come equipped with comfortableshoes, and climb one of the volcanic hills. The Vigia lookoutpoint, which has a positioning device used in aerialnavigation, welcomes aircraft approaching Panama City. There is also the Cerro de la Cruz, named for its large cross, and from where there is a view of the entire island.Noon arrives, and lunchtime movement begins. We have severaloptions; one of the many restaurants on the island, some withbetter views than others, or a beach hut. We choose the latter.Lunch is traditional fried fish served with fried plantains, riceand cassava, and we enjoy it from under our umbrella. No dishtastes better than the ones eaten on the shore. The rest of the afternoon is spent between dips in the sea andreading. There is no rush as the Calypso waits patiently at thepier to set sail at 4:30. On the journey back to the city, there isenjoyable chatter about who has the better tan and when toreturn to Taboga. An hour later, we are back on theCauseway. In short, there is nothing more relaxing than a dayat the beach.

Just 82 kilometers from Medellin, in the EasternAntioquia Region, is the town of Guatapé. The tourpasses through Rionegro, as one goes towards theinternational airport. A winding road will take you on ascenic two-hour drive through the Colombiancountryside.A sculpture of the American Phoenix welcomes visitorsto the town of El Peñol, which was flooded in 1978 tobuild a dam for a hydroelectric plant in the Nare River. This hydropower provides 30% of Colombia’s electricity. You can go through the replica of Old Peñol, a site fortourists with panoramic views, and craft and food stalls. The tour continues to the impressive El Peñol Stone, worshiped by the Tahamíes natives, who were theoriginal inhabitants of the area. During this period therewas a legend that the devil tried to take the stoneseveral times; and as "proof" there is a crack that comesout at the foot of the monolith.Mountaineers used this crack to climb it, until a concretestaircase that looks like a giant zipper was built. Goingup the staircase costs about 10,000 COP (under $ 5). It isa challenge to be taken; 649 numbered steps will takeyou to the top where you will find stalls selling food anddrinks for those arriving tired and wanting to enjoy theview. The flooding of the dam changed the landscape, and it stays green all year. Lakes and islands form the360-degree panorama.Step number 740 takes you to a tower with a souvenirshop and is a spectacular place to take pictures.A few minutes away from the 10 million ton giant stone, you will find the town of Guatapé, better known as "TheTown of Tiles."

For quite a few weeks, I had the desire to goto the Chef's Corner (Rincon del Chef). Iknew it was near the area known as "ElMarañón" but did not know exactly where. However, it is very easy to reach, and liesopposite the Metrobus “Pay Zona”.But, what is the Chef's Corner? It’s a fruit andvegetable market, open since January, every day, including weekends, from 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 pmIt’s easy to park, as they have numerous carparks, which also have security. Its employeeskindly welcome you and help you select itemsand enjoy the shopping experience. The products are at customers’ full view, in anorderly and harmonious set-up; in woodenboxes, raffia bags for lentils, beans, etc, andshelves for canned goods. Each sales stand hasits charm; handwritten chalkboards displayprices and offers. While we shopped, we talked with very friendlyand smiling employees. They explain that theproducts come direct from the field, are freshand full of flavor. Furthermore, on weekendsthere are tastings to learn about new flavors.David tells us that soon they will incorporatefood trucks with Panamanian food, sushi, tapas, smoothies and juices; all made from freshproduce. When visiting Chef's Corner, be sure to enjoy acold coconut for 75 cents, while sitting at thepublic tables and chairs, and relaxing withambient music. Here, you feel like you recover the shoppingexperience, making contact with the products intheir natural state, smelling the aromas andenjoying the colors; all at a fair price. We are used to making quick purchases ofprocessed or vacuum packaged goods. We forgethow nice food shopping can be. I definitelyrecommend it.63

Paola shares her experiences, and her vision, with the confidence of a person that knowsshe is prepared to meet her customer’sneeds, and is not afraid to work the hours necessaryto achieve her goals. The young designer greets us with herunmistakable smile. We ask her if she has pets.

"Yes, a dog and a cat. I love animals. They arefaithful companions".We take a seat in her office at her chic whitedesk ... Gold or Silver?Silver, a thousand times; I don’t wear many goldthings. Although, I recommend it to clients, either for their skin tone or for a certain type ofevent they are attending. She offers us drink, and we feel quickly athome. When did you decide you wanted todedicate yourself to fashion?Since childhood, because my grandmother madea lot of clothes for us. She was Italian and lovedmaking clothing. I spent a lot of time with her,and she would create clothes for my dolls basedon my drawings.Over time, I realized that was what I liked. If you weren’t a designer, what would be yourprofession?I really don’t know. Maybe something related tomedia or event planning. Truly, my passion isstarting a design from nothing, creating a sketchand seeing the end result on the client. What pieces do you feel most comfortablewith, and why?I really enjoy brides. You get to be the friend, psychologist, maid of honor, everything. Youhave to tend to the client and the event. It is very complicated, right? (…working withbrides)Very complicated. It takes more time to create, there are more fittings, and also a lot morefeelings in the process. Sometimes brides comein with doubts, and it isn’t the dress, but rather, that the date is approaching. What is your biggest inspiration?First, we start with a list of things you wouldnever wear. That way I know what not to offerin my sketch. I always include my style whilebeing respectful of someone’s comfort level. What is your biggest fear with brides? My biggest fear is that a bride will say “this isn’treally what I wanted” when you are halfwaydone, and the dress is already assembled. That’swhy everything is sketched beforehand. It’s notabout me keeping my ideas in my head, while thebride has no idea what is happening. In my opinion, there are two types of clients: theones that trust you wholeheartedly, and the onesthat struggle a bit trying to imagine the finaloutcome.I look at her cork wall, which holds Paola’sworks and publications ... I see you loveembroidery?I love embroidery, lace, tulle! (She confesses withenthusiasm).I had the opportunity to work with Sara Bazán.She has the finest fabrics in her atelier, and there,

I learned to really protect such delicate fabrics.I play with transparencies, details on mesh. Thisis worked very carefully.Do you follow trends? What do you think ofthem?Yes, I try to stay informed, and trends areconstantly changing. I have a range of clientsfrom very young to older ladies. You have to beable to adapt what is happening to the client.Do you have a favorite color?(Paola’s face lights up). My favorite color is onthe door, chartreuse - a lime green. It’s the firstthing I see in the morning. It gives me a lot ofenergy. It’s a vibrant color that matches mypersonality. You can see that there is a lot ofcolor in the atelier. Red is a color I’m not passionate about but havelearned to work with. There isn’t a universalcolor that goes well with everyone. As for work, one must be able to work with all colors. Is there a new generation of Panamaniandesigners?A strong one. It’s a growing field, and that makesme really happy.Because of social media and young designers, people see that there is another option that isn’tas expensive or unattainable as was oncebelieved. You can now study design in Panama. When Iwas starting out, the available training was verylimited. I started my career at the SavannahCollege of Art and Design and from there movedto California, very focused on fashion design.Keeping young people in mind, what is thebest way to become a fashion designer?

Internships are the best way to experiment andlearn without jeopardizing your brand. Besides, the business aspect, and managing a productionteam, are a real pain in the neck. What do Paola’s clients look for? They come looking for special fabrics that aren’tavailable here, they like my opinion on colors, orwhat silhouette best suits them. It all dependson the event.Designers that give you passion?(She answers without skipping a beat). Chanel forits classic silhouettes that highlight the fabrics. Marc Jacobs is riskier with his use of fabrics, colors, the contrasts he creates.Locally, of course, I greatly admire SaraBazán’s work.I also like local designers who have managedto perfectly combine molas and Panamanianfolklore.Women you admire? In the design world, I admire Chanel for hertenacity. Who she was and what sherepresented during her time, and her courage tobreakdown those archetypes. My grandmother too, because she managed tomake clothing her passion. She passed it downto me.Where is your favorite place to escape? In Panama, the beaches and, of course, El Valle.I try and relax when I can.Paola says goodbye with a smile and returnsto her work. She reminds us to send her acopy of the magazine, so she can pin it to hercork wall.

El Jardín MaryMary’s Garden

Guadalupe, Cerro Punta

In December 1967, Miguel Angel Asturias,Guatemalan novelist, translator of the PopolVuh, was awarded the Nobel Prize in Litera-ture. Meanwhile here in Panama, in the town ofGuadalupe, Cerro Punta; a rainy, wet and coldplace, with few inhabitants, was the secludedspot in the mountains that some pioneers weremaking their home. Some of the people living inthe extremely beautiful and fertile valley wereMrs. Rosa Landero, Xenon Santamaría, ChichoAtenció and the Caballero Vindas family, compo-sed of José Leonidas, Heriberta and their chil-dren.In the developed world, the Beatles and Doorsmusic was heard on the radio, and the psyche-delic movement was booming. At the sametime, working people got up every day to workthis land. The Caballero Vindas family consistedof two boys and five girls, Carmen Cecilia, NubiaMildred, José Leonidas (JR), Ruby Etzel, EdithArgelis, Jose Abdiel and Maria Eugenia. After 8 years running a shop (since 1963), theydecided to leave this heavy business. The youn-gest daughter, Maria Eugenia, was 11 months. It

was then that Mrs. Heri-berta Vindas decided tostart a garden. In thosedays, she had mostly Aga-panthus or Flower of Love(Agapanthus africanus),water calla lilies, Alcatraz, arum lily, calla lily (Zante-deschia aethiopica) andcarnations (Dianthus car-yophyllus) growing on theproperty. The road was just a stonepath, which was, for the most part, impassableby cars. In the rainy season, even the horses gotstuck in the mud. It was paved for the first timein 1981. At that time, Mary Garden’s customerswere mainly Ms. Goff Silvia and Mr. GustavoRuiz. Word about the beautiful lilies began tospread, and florists started to come. The humidenvironment was conducive to this type ofplant, so florists such as Panaflores, Plantas yFlores, and Cerro Punta S.A. became regulars, just like Ms. Ruiz Elsy and various other floristsfrom Panama City. This humble garden was started to help the do-mestic economy, and supplement income forher children’s education. After the loss of herhusband, Mr. José Leonidas, on March 30, 1983,Mrs. Heriberta finished educating her childrenalone. José Abdiel was studying Animal Sciencein Recife, Brazil, Maria Eugenia was finishing

high school in the DavidInstitute, Edith Argeliswas also finishing collegeas a building technician atthe U. of Technology, andthe youngest son, "thebaby" José Ameth, born in1977, was just enteringfirst grade. Thus, this project, Plan B,a garden to help the fa-mily, became the mainbusiness for the remai-ning Caballero Vindas Family members who, todate, have all become professionals. This isthanks to the effort, dedication and love fromtheir mother; a hardworking, enterprising andtireless woman who sometimes makes us won-der about the root of her strength. Those whoknow her admire, and even envy her tenacityand dedication. Meanwhile, her words are al-ways full of humility, "the strength and the ideacame from God".Presidents and former presidents, ambassadors, national and international television personali-ties, politicians and athletes, and countless tourbus visitors, are those through which this gar-den continues to provide its services as a placeof healthy recreation, inspiration for artists andrefuge.
