Dear readers,

F irst of all, I want to thank you for your positive comments about the new format and content of BALLENA TALES. We are proud to be present on the Internet, so our friends all over the world can follow our advances in Costa Ballena.

2010, a year full of difficult challenges, is coming to an end. However, Costa Ballena is vibrating with sheer energy. With you we are discovering the Costa Rican artists Jeannina Blanco and Dayana Corrales. Each one in a different artistic expression demonstrates excellence in achievement. Uvita will have its first Costa Ballena Fair, displaying the Services, Products and Arts of the area.We are also presenting Golfito, a nearby destination just a few hours away, opening the doors to another beautiful part of the country and the Southern Free Trade Zone.And for the end of the year, there will be a mega-event in the town of Sinaí, between Palmar Norte and Chacarita, with the participation of national and international artists and groups. So, besides its beautiful landscapes and beaches, the South Pacific area offers all kinds of activities for your enjoyment.Ballena Tales wishes you and your family a very Merry Christmas, hoping that the New Year will make you jump for joy. And do not forget to “do good to all”. n

P rimero que todo quiero agradecerles por sus comentarios positivos acerca del nuevo formato y contenido de BALLENA TALES. Estamos orgullosos de estar presentes en internet, de manera que nuestros amigos en el mundo entero puedan seguir nuestros avances en

Costa Ballena. 2010, un año lleno de pruebas y retos difíciles, está llegando a su fin. Sin embargo, Costa Ballena está vibrando con pura energía. Con ustedes estamos descubriendo las artistas costarricenses Jeannina Blanco y Dayana Corrales, cada una con una expresión artística muy diferente pero demostrando su excelente dominio del mismo. Uvita tendrá su primera Feria de Costa Ballena, exhibiendo Servicios, Productos y Artes de la zona. Estamos presentando también a Golfito, un destino cercano, a pocas horas de aquí, abriéndoles las puertas a otras hermosas regiones del país y a la Zona Franca del Sur.Y para fines de año, se estará llevando a cabo un mega-evento en el pueblo de Sinaí, entre Palmar Norte y Chacarita. Habrá intervención de artistas y grupos nacionales e internacionales. De manera que la zona del Pacifico Sur ofrece, aparte de sus hermosos paisajes y playas, todo tipo de actividades para su disfrute. Ballena Tales les desea una muy Feliz Navidad y esperamos que el Nuevo Año les haga brincar de alegría. Y no olviden ¡Hagan el Bien sin Mirar a Quien! n

Verano2011 ha venido experimentando una serie de cambios importantes especial-mente en su capacidad y oferta de servicios turísticos y el fácil acceso por la

Costanera Sur.Incorporando todas las organizaciones de la comunidad, está preparando una campaña conjunta de relan-zamiento de “Dominical - la Puerta del Sur”, mostrando su capacidad de servicios y la excelente muestra de recursos de mar y montaña. Presentarán sus playas cuidadas, limpias y seguras dentro del contexto de la Bandera Azul. Un grupo de artistas, coordinados por Mama Kiya Art Gallery y Jeannina Blanco, embellecerá sus frentes comerciales y domiciliares con murales. Mejorarán la rotulación de bienvenida e informativa desde el ingreso del pueblo hasta las riveras del Río Barú y las playas públicas.Piden a los vecinos que colaboren con el Comité “Pro Rescate de la Bandera Azul”, esperando así cambiar la historia del pueblo. n

Summer 2011 Dominical has been

undergoing a series of major changes, especially in its capacity and range of tourist services offered, facilitated by the easy access from the Coastal Highway. With the participation of all the community organizations, it is preparing a joint revival campaign of “Dominical – Gateway to the South”, by showing the multiplicity of its services and the broad range of mountain and ocean offerings.It will present its clean and safe beaches within the context of the Blue Flag. A group of artists, under the coordination of Mama Kiya Art Gallery and Jeannina Blanco, are beautifying its commercial and residential front walls with murals. The welcome and information signage from the entrance of the village to the banks of the Barú River and the public beaches will be improved.All residents are asked to collaborate with the “Rescue of the Blue Flag” Committee, so as to change the history of this village. n

Costa Rican artist Jeannina Blanco opened her first art studio in Newport Beach, California in 1998, after receiving formal training at the Scottsdale Artist School in Arizona and

recovering from brain surgery.An Artist Member of the prestigious Salmagundi Club in New York, her artwork has been published in The Artist’s Blue Book, The L.A. Times and other newspapers and magazines. She defines herself as a philanthropic artist by creating and participating in events on behalf of the San Juan Capistrano Mission, the Philharmonic Society of Orange County, homes for the elderly, animal protective associations and children’s causes such as Escuela Verde’s fundraising in 2010 through Mama Kiya Art Gallery in Dominical. She resides now in this area where she finds peace, beauty and the high energy needed for her artistic impulses.Her large body of work is made up of several murals and hundreds of paintings, drawings and digital media, as well as a film that was honored as being of “Cultural Interest” by former President Oscar Arias.Blanco’s artwork belongs to private and public collections in Brazil, Canada, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Israel, Japan, Mexico, Nicaragua, Portugal, Puerto Rico, Turkey and the United States. n

En 1998, la artista costarricense Jeannina Blanco abrió su primer estudio de arte en Newport Beach, California. Acababa de

recibir entrenamiento formal en la Escuela del Artista en Scottsdale, Arizona y se había recuperado de una cirugía cerebral.Como artista miembro del prestigioso Club de Salpicón de Nueva York, su obra de arte fue publicada en el Libro Azul del Artista, el LA Times de Los Ángeles y otros periódicos y revistas. Ella se define como una artista filantrópica porque crea y participa en eventos de beneficio como son la Misión de San Juan Capistrano, la Sociedad Filarmónica del Condado de Orange, residencias de tercera edad, asociaciones de animales y algunas causas a beneficio de los

niños como la recaudación de fondos a favor de la Escuela Verde en Uvita a través de la Galería de Arte Mamá Kiya en Dominical. Ahora reside en la zona donde encuentra paz, belleza y la elevada energía necesaria para sus impulsos artísticos.Su gran volumen de trabajo se compone de varios murales y cientos de pinturas, dibujos y medios digitales, y una película que fue proclamado de Interés Cultural por el ex presidente Oscar Arias.Las obras de Jeannina pertenecen a colecciones privadas y públicas en Brasil, Canadá, Costa Rica, República Dominicana, Ecuador, El Salvador, Israel, Japón, México, Nicaragua, Portugal, Puerto Rico, Turquía y los Estados Unidos. n

The voracious appetite of the lIONFISH

El pez león a menudo lo llaman pez escorpión, pez dragón, o el pescado pavo. En realidad, el pez león rojo es un miembro de la familia Scorpaenidae de los cuales hay tres subfamilias: pez león, pez escorpión y pez piedra. Los tres comparten características similares y de allí viene la

confusión.Es una especie invasora originaria de la región Indo-Pacífico y uno los peces más venenosos del océano. Tiene un cuerpo a rayas muy particular, con una serie de espinas y aletas que se abren en una magní-fica muestra de extravagancia por lo que es muy popular en el comercio de acuarios.Aunque pocos estudios han sido realizados, la invasión es preocupante. Como su nombre indica, es un depredador temible; tiene un apetito voraz, y pronto crece más que las especies nativas; come grandes cantidades de peces pequeños y crustáceos aun no desarrollados, rompien-do así los ecosistemas marinos locales y reduciendo la biodi-versidad de los arrecifes.¿Sabías que el pez león es comestible, es inclusive conside-rado un manjar, y puede ser preparado fácilmente?No hemos oído hablar de una invasión de nuestra costa, pero esta si es hogar de cuatro especies de pez escorpión: el pez sapo, manchado, el rojo de columna corta, y el arco iris. Como miembros de la familia Scorpaenidae, se ven impresionantes, tienen espinas venenosas que causan dolor severo, náuseas y dolor de cabeza. La picadura no es mortal para la mayoría de los seres humanos, sin embargo, se debe buscar tratamiento médico inmediatamente.Curiosamente, el pez trompeta y el pez corneta del Pacífico son depredadores por naturaleza del pez león rojo juvenil. Los científicos esperan que con el tiempo sus primos del Caribe también aprendan a consumir esta especie invasora y ayuden a controlar su cantidad. n

The lionfish is often referred to as scorpion fish, dragon fish, or turkey fish. In reality, the red lionfish is a member of the

family Scorpaenidae of which there are 3 sub-families: lionfish, scorpionfish, and stonefish. All three share similar characteristics hence the confusion.This is an invasive species native to the Indo-Pacific and is one of the most venomous ocean fishes. It has a very distinctive striped body, and a series of spines and fins that open up in a magnificent display of flamboyance making it very popular in the aquarium trade.Although few studies have been made, the invasion is worrisome. As the name suggests, it is a fearsome predator; has a voracious appetite; soon outgrows native species; eats large quantities of small and juvenile fish and crustaceans thus disrupting local marine

ecosystems and reducing reef biodiversity. Did you know that the lionfish is edible, is even considered a delicacy, and can easily be prepared?We have not heard of an invasion on our coast yet, but we are home to 4 species of scorpionfish: the bandfin, spotted, short-spine red, and rainbow. As members of the Scorpaenidae, they are impressive looking creatures with venomous spines that cause severe pain and may cause nausea and headaches. The sting is not fatal to most humans; however medical treatment should be sought immediately.Interestingly, the Pacific trumpetfish and cornetfish are natural predators of juvenile red lionfish. Scientists are hoping that with time their Caribbean cousins may also learn to consume this invasive species and help control their numbers. n

BT: You recently visited Dominical, invited by the United States Embassy and CAP on Crime to give a talk on Citizen Safety as a tool against crime. I understand that for 10 years you were the Head of the Police Department in Sacramento, California. What are the parallels with respect to controlling delinquency between a big city and a small village such as Dominical?Chief AV: It does not matter if it’s a small town or a big city, if there is no economic and social development and if the youth have nothing to do for lack of social values and because the family is being divided by time and distance, why are we surprised if crime and criminality appear?BT: What was the situation of crime in Sacramento when you joined the police as their chief? Chief AV: As in many places in Costa

Rica, we had gangs, drugs, robberies... As police, we were representing order. Change came about with much effort, mostly with the firm resolve for each of us to be more than just a community cop and to respond with service to the solution of the problems found there. BT: What were the most urgent needs found? Chief AV: We needed to communicate with the public about what was important to them. At the same time, my staff worked out a strategic plan for our future. We designed a new vision and mission with goals more in accord with what was important for the community. This was difficult but necessary, more so in a failing economy when the budget was not enough for all we had to do.BT: In the unforgettable exercise

with the boat which we did under your instruction, we failed, and learned from it that to survive we need communication and ingenuity. Chief AV: Communication is a big problem, especially when mixed with discrimination, ignorance, lack of accountability, lack of leadership, etc. Above all, we need communication and education to save ourselves, and it is much better to work together.BT: Can we count on your presence again in Costa Ballena to give similar lectures? Entiendo que usted durante 10 años fue el Jefe del Departamento de Policía de Sacramento, Califor-nia. ¿Cuáles son las paralelas con respecto al control de la delincuen-cia entre una ciudad tan grande y un pueblo tan pequeño como Do-minical?Chief AV: No importa si es un pue-blo chico o una ciudad grande, si no hay desarrollo económico y so-cial. Si la juventud tiene poco que hacer por falta de valores sociales y si la familia se está dividiendo en tiempo y distancia – da lo mismo. ¿Por qué nos sorprende si la delin-cuencia y criminalidad aparecen?BT: ¿Cuál fue la situación de crimen cuando usted se incorporó como Jefe de Policía en Sacramento?

Chief AV: Igual que en mucho lugares de Costa Rica. Habían pandillas, drogas, robos… Como policía, nosotros fuimos la cara del orden. El cambio se dio, pero con mucho esfuerzo, tomando la reso-lución de cada uno ser más que un policía comunitario y responder con servicio a la solución de los problemas. BT: ¿Cuáles fueron las medidas más urgentes?Chief AV: Comunicarme con el público sobre lo que era impor-tante para ellos. Al mismo tiempo, con el personal de mi departamen-to empezamos un plan estratégico para nuestro futuro. Diseñamos una nueva visión y misión con me-tas acorde a la importancia comu-nicada por la comunidad. Esto fue duro pero necesario en una época cuando la economía falló y el pre-supuesto no alcanzaba para todo lo que teníamos que hacer.

BT: En el inolvidable ejercicio del bote que hicimos bajo sus instruc-ciones, fallamos, aprendiendo de él que para sobrevivir hace falta comunicación e ingenio.Chief AV: La comunicación es un gran problema, especialmente cuando se mezcla con discrimi-nación, ignorancia, falta de res-ponsabilidad, falta de liderazgo, etc. Sobre todo necesitamos co-municación y educación para sal-varnos, y es mucho mejor trabajar juntos. BT: ¿Podríamos contar con su pre-sencia nuevamente en Costa Bal-lena para dictar charlas parecidas?

Pedro could not believe his eyes. When he came back to his parked car in San Isidro’s parking zone, his license plates

were gone! At first he thought that it had been a thief, until somebody told him that it had been the traffic police. To get them back, he had to present himself to COSEVI (Consejo de Seguridad Vial). There he was told that his parking permit had expired. “Ok”, said Pedro, “than tell me what I have to do to get my license plates back”. “Very easy, pay 220.000 colones and you’ll get them back”, was the answer. Pedro couldn’t believe what he heard! But as he had to go back on the same day to Dominical, he thought he had no choice, and he paid the fine.

Mary went shopping in San Isidro. She parked her car on the road 15 m. from the Post Office. A policeman on his motorcycle stopped and even helped her to get into the free spot. ”How friendly, thank you very much”, she said to him. Ten minutes after getting into the car,

she did not think that he was so friendly. He took out his ticket book and gave her a “220,000 colones ticket” for not wearing her seat belt. But Mary wasn’t ready to just pay. She went to COSEVI to appeal the fine.

That was very clever of her, because she had read in the newspaper La Nación that appealed fines cannot be claimed at this moment. The Constitutional Chamber of the Supreme Court (Sala IV) decided to waive all payments of fines for appealed traffic tickets until judges can make a ruling on the constitutionality of the new Traffic Law. COSEVI cannot claim the money, for the simple reason that there is no higher institution where the citizen can present an appeal. This goes against the right of legitimate defence. Let’s follow this story and see how it ends ...

The fines are based on the basic salary of a government employee in Costa Rica, in many cases, this is 75% of it! n

Multas... ¿a usted le ha pasado?

Pedro no podía creer lo que veía, cuando re-gresó a su automóvil es-

tacionado en la zona de par-queo en San Isidro, ¡sus placas de matrícula habían desapare-cido! Primero creyó que había sido un ladrón, hasta que al-guien le dijo que fue la Policía de Tránsito. Para recuperarlas, tuvo que presentarse ante el COSEVI (Consejo de Seguri-dad Vial). Allí le dijeron que su boleto de parqueo se había vencido. “Ok”, dijo Pedro, “y ¿qué tengo que hacer para re-cuperar mis placas?”. “Muy fácil, pagar 220.000 colones y las tendrá de vuelta”, fue la respuesta. Pedro no podía creer lo que oía. Pero como tuvo que regresar el mismo día a Dominical, pensó que

no tenía otra opción y pagó la multa.

María fue de compras a San Isidro. Aparcó su carro en la calle a unos 15 m. de las Oficinas de Correo. Un policía en moto se detuvo e incluso le ayudó a estacionarse mejor. “Que amable, muchas gracias”, le dijo. Diez minutos más tarde, después de arrancar, el agente no le pareció tan amable. Sacó su bloque de boletas y le dio una por 220.000 colones por no haberse puesto su cinturón de seguridad. Pero María no estaba preparada a pagar. Ella fue a COSEVI para apelar la multa.

Eso fue muy inteligente, porque había leído en el pe-riódico La Nación, que multas apeladas no pueden ser recla-

madas en el momento. La Sala Constitucional del Tribunal Supremo (Sala IV) decidió re-nunciar a todos los pagos de las multas por infracciones de trán-sito hasta que los jueces hayan tomado una decisión sobre la constitucionalidad de la nueva Ley de Tránsito. COSEVI no puede reclamar el dinero por la sencilla razón de que no hay una institución mayor donde el ciudadano nuevamente pueda apelar la decisión en su contra. Esto va en contra del derecho de la Legítima Defensa. Vamos a seguir esta historia y ver cómo termina...

El monto de las multas se basa en el sueldo básico de un empleado del gobierno de Costa Rica. En muchos casos, ¡sería el 75% del mismo! n

Dayana de 5 añitos escuchaba “esta” música y comenzaba a moverse al ritmo que la motivaba

a volar por la sala de la casa. Cuando tenía 7 años, ella juntaba sus propios accesorios y buscaba faldas en el armario de su mamá para elaborar sus trajes. Su familia la observaba y se asombraba porque ella no bailaba merengue como los demás niños. Pero Dayana siguió bailando con sus exóticos movimientos. A los 10 años, ve estupefacta por primera vez un video - donde una mujer baila como ella al son de la música que a ella le gusta: música árabe, con la cual se identificó aún más. De allí en adelante, Dayana comienza a estudiar la música, el baile de vientre y esta cultura tan lejana.

Hoy con 21 años, Dayana, aparte de ser co-laboradora en un conocido hotel en Costa Ballena, es instructora de baile de vientre. “En Egipto” dice, “siempre ha sido un baile ritual milenario que representa la posición de la mujer en la sociedad y su fertilidad.” En la actualidad se baila por el mundo entero. No solo es un bellísimo estilo de expresión corporal, sino también los bene-ficios son múltiples: mejora la autoestima, el tono muscular y disminuye los dolores menstruales, entre otros. Dayana trans-mite a sus estudiantes que cada sonido es un evento rítmico expresado con movi-mientos solares o lunares, donde la mente se conecta con el cuerpo, el corazón se abre al amor y el alma se vuelve tan libre como el viento. n

Dancing makes your soul as free as the wind...

When Dayana was only 5 years old, she would listen to “this” music and would begin

moving to its rhythm, that would send her spinning around the living room. When she was 7, she made her own accessories and looked for skirts in her mother´s closet to create her own costumes. Her family watched her in astonishment as she did not dance merengue like the other children. But Dayana continued dancing with her exotic movements. At the age of 10, she was stunned when she watched a video for the first time where a woman danced like she did and to the beat of the same type of music that she liked: Arabian music. Then she identified herself with it. From then on, Dayana began studying music, belly

dancing and this new culture from such a faraway land.Today at 21, Dayana, aside from being part of the team of a well-known hotel in Costa Ballena, is also a belly dance instructor. “In Egypt” she says, “it has always been an ancient ritual dance that represents the position of a woman in society and her fertility.” Today it is danced all over the world. It is not only a beautiful style of bodily expression, the benefits are many: it improves self-esteem and muscle tone, and reduces menstrual cramps, among other things. Dayana teaches her students that every sound is a rhythmic event expressed in solar and lunar movements, where the mind connects with the body, the heart opens to love and the soul becomes as free as the wind. n

Populares en los años 1950, las fuentes de soda eran locales donde se vendía y dispensaba principalmente agua carbonatada con sabores (hoy gaseosas). Hoy día siguen siendo lugares de encuentro de la gente, donde sirven comidas típicas.

Rafael y Ligia Montoya son los dueños del pequeño restaurante cerca del Hotel Tucán. A very typical “Soda”

Popular in the 1950’s, the soda fountains were establishments where mainly flavored carbonated water (now soft drinks) were sold and served. Today they are still places to meet the locals, and where you can have a typical lunch.

Rafael and Ligia Montoya are the owners of a small restaurant near the Tucan Hotel. It is simple, clean and well cared for. Here you can enjoy the typical “Casado”: rice, beans, meat, chicken or fish and salad, the “Olla de Carne”, a meat soup with all sorts of vegetables and roots, and then the satisfying “empanadas”. The friendly hosts always have time for a little chat. They recently opened a “pulpería”. Pulperías are typical commercial establishments in rural areas that provide all the necessities for everyday living: food, drinks, candles and remedies.In an adjoining room there are pool tables and bing bang machines. It is a social center for the locals, where they meet to talk and see what’s new. You are most welcome! n

In my last article I discussed the problems posed by vehicles that are causing the death

of wild and domestic animals along the Coastal Highway. We got down to work and with our friends from «Protect the Animals of the Coastal Highway, and we had a meeting with the Mayor, Mr. Alberto Cole. We presented our proposal along with Pedro Monzón and Moisés

Solano at the monthly meeting of the Municipality of Osa. It was received with much interest and a desire to help.These are the proposals: Increase the presence of traffic police • Install informational signs • Eradicate the deafening brake sounds of the trailers (that scare the animals and create noise pollution) • Install speed bumps at key points • Build bridges for

the animals.To consolidate this proposal we need the support of the community. How? By signing the petitions. Where? At the Veterinary Center Costa Ballena in Uvita, and Mama Kiya Art Gallery in Dominical.Join our facebook group “Protect the Animals of the Coastal Highway”. Nowadays, when people hear the word yoga, they instantly think of physical postures. The history of Yoga transcends more than 5000 years of study and knowledge. Rather than being a physical practice, it is a philosophy of life, where the utilization of postures is but a tool to maintain the body in harmony with the

whole.Among the branches of yoga, there is a beautiful practice that personalities like Mother Teresa practiced with fervor in their lives: Bhakti Yoga or the yoga of love and devotion. This branch teaches us how by cultivating compassion, kindness and unconditional love we can open our hearts and live each moment of our lives to the fullest, finding happiness through service and love towards others. Thus, our responsibilities are no longer an obligation, but rather they give value and meaning to our lives. As Mother Teresa said: “it is not about how much we do, but rather how much love we put into each of our actions”. Best of all, the practice of love allows us to stop doing things just to get results, because love itself becomes the greatest reward. n

Me, myself and I of course! That would be my first reaction. But after the last

few weeks I’m not sure anymore. Our first kid was born. And within a few seconds he was in charge, demanding, wanting and ordering me around by crying.It took me at least 4 weeks to get some control back over my life. But it also made me wonder. Who else is running my life? Is everything I do something I really want to, or is someone else demanding it from me?Do I run my life or am I just taking orders? For whom am I doing the things that are ‘good’ for me, but

that I hate to do?With a baby it is obvious. When I react to his crying, he is in charge. A clear sign. But who makes me do things I do not really want to do? A good help is the word ‘must’, which means that I do not ‘want to’. ‘Must’ is planted by someone else in my mind. ‘Want’ is my own decision.How about your life? Who’s running yours? Just for fun, one day, check all your own ‘musts’. Then listen to the voice inside you. Who is talking? Who’s ‘must’ or ‘have to’ is it? Your parents´, your wife´s or husband´s, your teacher´s, your best friend´s,

Oprah´s or your newspapers´?If you find lots of ‘must’s, watch out! You are not running your life. You are doing what others want you to do. Is this the way you want it to be? Enjoy, and never regret that you gave your life away.If you want to run your own life, get rid of all the ‘must’s. Look for the ‘want’s. It will make your life yours. You’re in control, with good or bad results. But they will be yours! You become what you are best at... the best YOU there is. Who else is better qualified than you! n

sería mi primera reacción. Pero desde hace unas semanas no estoy seguro

de nada. Nuestro primer hijo nació. Y en segundos él estuvo al cargo, exigiendo, deseando y ordenando con su llanto.Me tomó por lo menos 4 semanas para volver a te-ner algún tipo de control sobre mi vida. Sin embargo, también me hizo pensar. ¿Quién más está controlan-do mi vida? ¿Es todo lo que hago realmente algo que quiero hacer? ¿O es alguien más quien me lo exige?

¿Controlo yo mi vida o solo estoy tomando ór-denes? ¿Para quién estoy haciendo las cosas que son “buenas para m“, pero que no me gustan hacer?

Con un bebé es obvio. Si reacciono a su llanto, él está al mando. Esto está claro.

Los locales sienten el cambio

El agente Marco Montes, encargado de la Es-tación de Policía en Uvita, es un policía sa-crificado que no conoce horario. Gracias a la

presencia de su equipo de 17 policías en 4 motos y una patrulla, ya los locales sienten el cambio. Ahora la gente puede transitar tranquilamente.

La policía erradicó los “centros de reuniones” en las esquinas de los edificios, y vigilan el cierre de los establecimientos. Apresaron cuatro ladrones de Ciu-dad Neilly, uno de ellos tenía una orden de captura.

Hace poco llevaron a cabo el desalojo de un grupo de ocupantes ilegales en el terreno de la Casa Blanca en Bahía. Han construido lazos de confianza y respeto con la población.

Sin embargo, dice Marco Montes, muchos robos se pueden prevenir: “No lleven objetos de valor a la playa, usen los estacionamientos guardados y cierren sus vehículos. Sencillamente apliquen el sentido común como en cualquier parte del mundo”. n

Thanks to the presence of his team of 17 on 4 bikes and a patrol car, the locals have started to feel the change. Now people can walk around safely.

The Police eradicated the «meeting places» at the corners of certain buildings and they monitor businesses after closing hours. They arrested four thieves from Ciudad Neilly; one of them had a pre-

existing arrest warrant. They also recently evicted a group of squatters from the White House in Bahía property. They have built bonds of trust and respect with the people.

However, Marco Montes states that many thefts can be prevented: “Don´t take your valuables to the beach, use the guarded parking lots and close your vehicles. Just use the common sense you would use anywhere in the world”. n

Hoy y ayerGolfito está situado a la orilla noreste del Golfo Dulce, un gran golfo del Pacifico Sur, al oeste de Panamá. El nombre del cantón se debe a la forma que presenta el litoral, de un golfo pequeño dentro del Golfo Dulce; lo cual dio origen a la denominación del sitio en donde se ubica la actual ciudad de Golfito.

L a United Fruit Company (compañía ba-nanera) fundó este puerto en los años 20. En 1940, se instaló en Osa y Golfito la compañía bananera que contaba con

ciertos beneficios fiscales que contribuyeron al de-sarrollo regional. Construyeron el ferrocarril y el puerto en Golfito y el área se volvió momentánea-mente próspera, formándose aquí un centro mer-cantil muy importante para todo el país.La historia de Golfito se remonta al año 1936. Na-ció gracias a la compañía bananera, por ser un sitio ideal para un muelle.

En el año 1949, era tal el emprendimiento de la región que el gobierno lo convirtió en el sétimo cantón de Puntarenas. No obstante, este apogeo decayó a raíz del las huelgas en los bananales que motivaron a la bananera a cancelar sus ope-raciones en la zona sur. De repente, los miles de trabajadores que suministraban millones de co-lones a la región -- desaparecieron. El gobierno trató de mitigar el golpe con un gran proyecto de desarrollo llamado Coto Sur, dedicado a la agricultura como a la siembra de palma africana. Sin embargo, el desmantelamiento del ferrocar-

ril, el abandono de los bananales, el traspaso del muelle al gobierno, cambió por completo el pa-norama del cantón.

Para aminorar lo anterior el gobierno creó un Depósito Comercial Libre que ha transformado en parte la fisonomía de Golfito. Hoy se ha liberado de la fama de “ciudad bananera” para convertirse en un ejemplo de desarrollo. n

G O L F i T OT he United Fruit Company (banana

company) founded this port in the 1920's. in 1940, the banana company settled in Osa and Golfito, which had

received certain tax benefits. These contributed to the development of the region. They built the railway and the port of Golfito and for a short time the area became prosperous, promptly developing into a very important commercial center for the whole country.

Golfito´s history dates back to 1936 when the banana company developed it as a docking port. in 1949, such was the progress of the region that the government decided to make it the seventh canton of Puntarenas. However, this heyday waned in the wake of the strikes in the banana plantations which led the company to abandon its operations in the south. Suddenly, the thousands of workers who had provided millions of colones to the region disappeared.

The government tried to soften the blow with a large development project called Coto Sur. it was dedicated to agriculture and the planting of African Palm trees to extract palm

oil. However, the dismantling of the railway, the abandonment of the banana plantations, and the transfer of the dock to government management, completely changed the future development of the canton. Then the

government established a Free Trade Shopping Mall which has changed the appearance of Golfito. it has freed itself from being known as a "banana city” and has become an example of development. n

Today and yesterdayGolfito is located on the north-eastern shore of the Golfo Dulce, a great gulf of the South Pacific, west of Panama. the name of the canton is due to the shape of the coast where it forms a small gulf within the Golfo Dulce, giving Golfito its current name..

Pues muy sencillo, vaya acompañado.

Puede llevar a su esposa/o, hermano/a, padre o hijo/a (siempre que sea mayor de edad) pero no se podrán unir más de dos tarjetas. The special prices there are approximately 20% to 50% cheaper than in regular costa rican stores. So the trip is worthwhile if you are planning a major purchase. The first thing you must do is take your cédula or Passport with you.

With your documentation you obtain a card called “TAC – or Tarjeta de Autorización de Compra”, which is a card

that allows you to buy up to 1,000 USD within the semester in which it is valid – either to June 30th or to December 31st. Purchases with this card can only be done starting the day after you obtained it up until its expiration date. So you can inspect the goods the day you got your TAC, and then take them home with you the following day. En Bahía nos encontramos con Susana García, zoóloga, y Ginette Bariteau, propietaria de una tienda de buceo y conocedora del esce-

nario submarino. Ellas están realizando un proyecto de educación ambiental de diez semanas conjunta-mente con los estudiantes del 5to y 6to grado de la Escuela La Flor de Bahía. El pueblo vive del recurso marino y los jóvenes son ávidos por instruirse sobre el ecosistema de los arrecifes de coral. El programa “Kids Aware” o “Programa de Educación Marina para Niños” se lleva a cabo en 100 países y tiene su primer piloto en Costa Rica, aquí en Bahía. Don Aurelio, di-rector de la escuela, es un entusiasta facilitador de las actividades. En el salón o a través de juegos re-

creativos en la playa, los muchachos aprenden más sobre los grandes cetáceos y a diferenciar conchas y cangrejos. Gracias a negocios locales como el BM Supermercado Uvita y la Licorera Don Israel, nunca faltan refrigerios o pequeños premios.Un evento inolvidable fue una salida en bote para observar las ballenas. Susana y Ginette: ¿Cuál es el propósito del programa? “Realmente es sensibilizar a los jóvenes, suministrarles mayor conocimiento cientí-fico e inculcarles un mayor respeto por su medio am-biente”. Todo el trabajo realizado es voluntario. Otras escuelas de Costa Ballena ya han mostrado su interés en el programa. n

in Bahia we met Susana Garcia, a zoologist, and Ginette Bariteau, the owner of a scuba dive shop familiar with underwater scenery. They are

carrying out a ten week environmental education project for 5th and 6th grade students of the Flor de Bahía School. The village lives off of marine resources, and the youth are eager to learn about the ecosystem of the coral reefs. The “Kids Aware Program” takes place in 100 countries and the pilot program in Costa Rica is here in Bahia. Don Aurelio, director of the school, is an enthusiastic facilitator of the activities. in the classroom or through recreational games on the beach, the youngsters

learn more about whales and how to distinguish shells and crabs. Thanks to local businesses such as the BM supermarket and the Don israel Liquor store, snacks or small prizes are never missing. An unforgettable event was a boat tour to watch the whales.Susan and Ginette: What is the purpose of the program? “It’s about creating awareness among the young people, providing them with greater scientific knowledge and instilling in them a greater respect for their environment.” All work is voluntary. Other schools in Costa Ballena have already shown interest in the program. n

Estamos muy contentos de tener un restaurante tailandés de calidad muy cerca de casa. Fue una secuencia de tres, cada plato más delicio-

so que el anterior. La carta es algo limitada, pero los sabores robustos de cada platillo más que recompen-san por la pequeña selección. Empezamos con una ensalada picante de carne al estilo thai. El aderezo de la ensalada tenía un agradable sabor picante y las verduras y la carne fueron muy bien presentadas.Como plato principal, ordené un pollo al curry. Al igual que con todos los platos de curry (pescado, ca-marones, vegetales) se decide cuan picante lo desea en una escala del 1 a 10.Me fui por la gama media, Karen se pronunció por el 10. Ambos juzga-mos que los platos eran muy bue-nos. Los platos de curry se sirven con arroz y una pequeña cantidad de calabacín y zanahorias, para limpiar el paladar para el próximo triunfo del sabor curry.

Celebrating a special occasion at Madrasmadras, a thai/French restaurant, is located between ojochal and Ballena, km 170, a short drive up the mountains so like monkeys, you dine in the treetops. madras has been one of our favorite restaurants since we first moved to ojochal full time.

I am very pleased to have a quality Thai restaurant in close proximity. It was a triple

play with each course being as delicious as the one before. The menu items are limited but the robust flavors in each dish more than make up for the limited choices. We started with the Spicy Thai Beef Salad. The dressing on the salad had a lovely tangy flavor and the veggies and beef were nicely presented.For the main course, I ordered the Chicken Curry. As with all of the curry dishes (fish, shrimp, or vegetable) you decide how hot

you want it on a scale of 1 - 10. I went mid-range and Karen went full throttle. We both thought the dish was very good. The cur-ry dishes are served with rice and a small amount of zucchini and carrots, clearing the palate for the next flavorful hit of curry. Ross had the Pineapple Pork Indian Style, finding that the combination of the two made it a wonderful dish. Because we were celebrating a special occasion, we splurged with a dessert of crème brulée. The custard was smooth, creamy, and delicious and the top was toasted to a crunchy perfection.

The restaurant interior is fun and funky. Franky, the owner, has interjected his style with the seating, art, and lighting. Milka is the chef and handles the kitchen with easy. Miss Luna is the hostess but only if you go early in the evening. Otherwise, she is fast asleep. It is hard to keep your eyes open very late if you are only five.Call ahead for reservations. The restaurant is small with seating for about 20 people and parking is limited so share rides if you are going as a group. n(See Restaurant list p. 43)

Un atardecer más rosado que nunca

su vuelo rosado embellece aún más el colorido de los atardeceres en Playa Colonia, siendo una valiosa joya emplumada de la que los Uviteños nos sentimos orgullosos.

En nuestro Parque Nacional Marino Ballena habita una de las especies de aves más amenazadas de Costa Rica, la espátula rosada (Platalea ajaja). Esta

ave de la familia de las zancudas, vive cerca de las desembocaduras de los ríos, estuarios y en la zona de manglar. Se la reconoce fácilmente por su

vistoso colorido asociado a un tamaño importante: la envergadura de sus alas es de más de 120 centímetros. El color blanco predomina

en los jóvenes; gradualmente van obteniendo los vistosos colores, pero su pico, con su peculiar forma es fácilmente reconocible.

Bien provisto de herramienta, con un pico especializado en la caza bajo el agua, revuelve la arena de las zonas poco

profundas, en busca de pequeños peces, crustáceos e insectos, al tiempo que remueve el fondo con sus patas.

Debido al colorido de sus plumas, la Espátula Rosada fue una de las aves que sufrió serias bajas a principios del siglo XX. En aquel entonces, las damas utilizaban sombreros con plumas. Hoy en día es considerada una especie en peligro de extinción, debido a la pérdida de su hábitat por la deforestación y la contaminación ambiental. Está protegida y regulada por la Ley de Conservación de la Vida Silvestre No. 7317, la Ley Orgánica del Ambiente No. 7554 y el decreto No.

26435-MINAET. n

Its pink flight further embellishes the colorful sunsets of Colonia Beach, and it’s a valuable feathered gem which those of us who are from Uvita are proud of.

Our Ballena Marine National Park is home to one of the most endangered birds of Costa Rica, the Roseate Spoonbill

(Platalea ajaja). This bird of the family of waders, lives near the river deltas, estuaries and mangroves. It is easily recognized by

its bright colors associated with a significant size: the wing spread is over 120 centimeters. The young are predominantly white,

gradually changing to more showy colors; but its peak, with its distinctive shape is easily recognizable.

Well supplied with tools, with a peak specialized in hunting under water, it stirs the sand in the shallows, looking for small fish, crustaceans and insects, while rousing the ground with their feet. Because of their colorful feathers, the Roseate Spoonbill suffered serious casualties in the early twentieth century. Back then, fashionable ladies used to wear hats with feathers. Today it is considered an endangered species due to habitat loss caused by deforestation and environmental pollution. It is protected and regulated by the Law for Wildlife Conservation No. 7317, the Environment Act No. 7554 and the Decree No. 26435-MINAET. n

Bt. We now know that the four final stages of life are the stages of learning, self-realization, Bodhisattva and Buddha. What does "Buddha" mean?Philippe. "Buddha" means "one who has become enlightened." We call Shakyamuni "The Historic Buddha” because he awoke to the Eternal Law of Life. He has taught that all humans can achieve this level of greatness, just as he has. This is revealed in the Lotus Sutra, which represents his last teaching on life, with the Sutra of Nirvana as the conclusion. But in those days, people were not prepared to understand its discovery. For forty years, he taught many sutras which were part of the Law of Life. When he felt that his disciples were ready to understand more, Shakyamuni preached the Lotus Sutra. For the first time, people could hear about the state of Buddha. Prior teachings stated that human beings could only reach that state after their karma was completely purified, life after life, and this did not include women or criminals for whom it was impossible to attain. However, 2.500 years later, Nichiren Daishonin adapted the sutra to our times and

revealed how Buddhahood could be achieved in our own lifetime. This is one of the revolutionary aspects of Nichiren’s Buddhism, that is was totally adapted to our times.

Bt. how can we discover it?Ph. To discover this hidden wonder inside human life is precisely the purpose of Buddhist teachings! We can say that Buddhahood is a dynamic state of perfect and complete freedom, in which we are enlightened to the Law of Life; it occurs when we actually perceive the Mystic Law in our own lives. It is characterized by an infinite compassion and boundless wisdom. For those who bring forth Buddhahood from within, all things, even the inevitable suffering from illness, old age and death, can become an opportunity for deep joy and satisfaction. The inner state shines outwardly through actions and selfless commitment represented in the state of bodhisattva. This leads us to the key aspect of the ten states: each state holds within itself the other nine.(To be continued) n

El estado de Buda y el sutra del lotoBt. ahora sabemos que los cuatros últimos es-tados de vida son el aprendizaje, la autorreali-zación, el Bodhisattva y Buda. ¿Qué significa “Buda”? Philippe: “Buda” significa “quien ha logrado un completo despertar espiritual”. Llamamos a Shakyamuni “El Buda histórico”, porque él se ha despertado a la Ley Eterna de la Vida. Nos ha en-señado que todos los humanos, como él, pueden alcanzar este nivel de grandeza. Esto es revelado en el Sutra del Loto, que representa la última enseñan-za en su vida, con el Sutra de Nirvana como conclu-sión. Es caracterizado por una misericordia infinita y una sa-biduría sin límite. Para quien haga surgir el estado de Buda, todo, incluso los sufrimientos ineludibles de la enfermedad, la vejez y la muerte, pueden lle-gar a ser una oportunidad de verdadera alegría y sa-tisfacción. La luz interior se manifiesta en acciones y compromiso altruista representadas en el estado de bodhisattva. Reserva Playa Tortuga

a más de la mitad de la temporada de tortugas, los investigadores se encuentran más ocupados que nunca. En la reserva ellos observan de cerca lo que está pasando, a continuación se cataloga

y se marca la posición del nido con el GPS. Una vez encon-trado el nido los huevos son cuidadosamente trasladados a la nueva guardería. Se trata de la única guardería que ha pasado por todas las instancias jurídicas para lograr su aprobación. La Municipa-lidad finalmente otorgó el permiso pertinente. Los investigadores ahora pueden monitorear y proteger los huevos de tortuga de los cazadores furtivos y también de los depredadores. Cada nido tiene un promedio de 110 huevos. Las tortuguitas tardan alrededor de 50 - 52 días para salir del cascarón antes de que se liberen en la playa para que, con suerte, puedan comenzar el ciclo de nuevo.Sólo este año se han encontrado 36 nidos. 14 tortugas hembras fueron observadas haciendo el nido y 9 fueron identificadas a partir de las marcas colocadas el año pasado. With the turtle season half gone, researchers find themselves busier than ever. They are going down to the reserve to observe firsthand

what is happening, then cataloging and marking the position of each nest with a GPS. Once the nest is located, the eggs are carefully moved to the new nursery. This is the only nursery to have passed all the legal requirements for approval. The Municipality has finally given the center the required operating permit. Researchers can now monitor and protect turtle eggs from poachers and predators alike. Each nest

has been averaging about 110 eggs. The turtles take about 50-52 days to hatch before they are released on the beach to hopefully begin a new cycle.This year alone 36 nests have been found, 14 females have been observed making their nests and 9 turtles were identified from tags placed on them last year. The investigators also measure each nest to track their size and species. Night patrol is probably your best bet to observe this incredible creature in action.
