3. Details of activities monthly and weekly
a) Monthly Lecturer
We organize a monthly lecture in different facilities of The National Autonomous University of México
(UNAM) mainly with local speakers, but we also had two external invited speakers. All events have been
announced in the printed and digital university gazette, in addition with our printed posters and digital
advertising that circulates in multiple social networks. We decide as a Chapter to spend part of our
activity grant ($40.00 USD per lecturer) in snacks and beverages in order to make the lectures more
enjoyable, and in an optics-related memorabilia as a present to all our speakers. Publicity spent was cover
by our university. We had an average of 65 people assisting per seminary. In the next table we present the
month and the lecture given by the invited speakers.

b) Weekly Seminar
The Department of Optics at CCADET/UNAM organizes a weekly seminar with students and researchers.
This year the SPIE UNAM Chapter was given the task to organize completely the weekly seminar and it
was consolidated for a higher number of attendees, inviting more students from other institutes, colleges,
universities and entrepreneurs related to optics and photonics. We spent $12.00 USD per month in snacks
and beverages, with usually three or four editions per month and an average of 35 people per seminary.

4. OPUMA Conference 2016
What is OPUMA Conference 2016?
OPUMA Conference 2016 (Optics, Photonics and Upcoming Methods and Applications) was created
by the members of SPIE-UNAM Student Chapter with the intention of giving continuity to “The First
School of Optics and Photonics SPIE-UNAM” held from November 18th to 20th at the center for Applied
Sciences and Technological Development (CCADT), UNAM; an event in which we invited to Dr. Miguel
A. Alonso from Institute of Optics at the University of Rochester, who gave us a lecture plenary and a
workshop in optics.
Aim of OPUMA Conference 2016
OPUMA Conference was held in its first edition as a congress from November 9th to 11th of 2016, with
the main auditoriums at CCADET and at the Amoxcalli Building of the Faculty of Sciences of the UNAM.
It was a regional event which provided an opportunity for professional development at the undergraduate,
master's, doctoral at UNAM and other universities whose works are interested in working in Optics and
Photonics, through interaction with national and international researchers and specialists in the field of
optics.

Our Speakers
Sponsors-OPUMA 2016
All Chapter's members participated helping with the organization of OPUMA, before, during and
after the event, thanks to the participation of all members of SPIE-UNAM Chapter the event was a
success. We had the opportunity to provide information to assistants, for example, solving doubts of
“What is a Chapter?” and “how is a student chapter managed?” and how to found a student chapter in
their respective universities. SPIE was the main sponsor, we had support from the National
Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) through the Postgraduate Department of Engineering,
CCADET and the Faculty of Science, Mexican Academy of Optics (AMO), which gave us support in
the conference marketing at national and international level. In addition SPIE provided us support for
the dissemination of the event. OPUMA 2016 was advertised through posters and printed canvas,
which were posted throughout our university and other national universities. The marketing in social
networks was very important, we had presence in major social networks (Twitter, Facebook, e-mail,
digital and printed gazette UNAM and our own website), and it allowed us a greater scope, which is of
great importance. So, with the help of our sponsors (SPIE, UNAM, AMO etc.) we had advertisements
in their multiple platforms giving us the opportunity to host an international event with an excellent
organization.

5. SPIE-UNAM dissemination events
This year we consolidated a part of the Student Chapter that we think is very important and therefore
we invest a lot of time and effort, we participated in scientific outreach events for university students,
pre-university students and general public (mainly children). In these activities we made
demonstrations to describe in a friendly way “what is the light?”. We also had different workshops
where participants built multiple optical toys. As part of the consolidation of the outreach section in
our Student Chapter, some members decided to request SPIE support through the program “SPIE
Education Outreach Grant”, which was approved and it has served to continue carrying out these
activities and to reach a larger number people. The SPIE through our Student Chapter to have more
presence in Mexico, because we estimate that this kind of events the attendees goes from 200 to 300
per day. We not only used the Optics Outreach Kit granted by SPIE but we also built a lot of new
material for the different activities of dissemination.
