Electricity Theft is a very common problem incountries like India, where population is very highand the users of electricity are ultimately tremendous
In India the losses are currently 29 percent of thetotal generation which equals 45,000 crores in the
year 2009-10.
Electricity theft can be detected by AMR via powerline communication

LOSSES IN POWER SYSTEMTechnical Losses : It includes resistive losses in the
primary feeders, distribution transformer losses
resistive losses in service drops, and losses in kWhmetering
Non-Technical Losses : It occurs as a result of theft, metering inaccuracies and unmetered energy. Theft ofpower is energy delivered to customers that is notmeasured by the energy meter for the customer

AUTOMATIC METER
READING
AMR is a technique to facilitate remote readings of
energy consumption through digital communication.
In most cases, the meter that is used in an AMR systemis the same ordinary meter used for manual reading
but the difference with conventional energy meter is
the addition of some device to generate pulses relating
to the amount of consumption monitored, or
generates an electronic, digital code that translates to
the actual reading on the meter dials.

POWER LINE
COMMUNICATIONPower line communications take place over the samelines that deliver electricity. This technique involves
injecting a high frequency AC carrier onto the powerline and modulating this carrier with data originatingfrom the remote meter or central station. Power linecommunications has many new service possibilities on
the data transferring via power lines without use ofextra cables.

SMART METERS
Smart meter is usually an electrical meter thatrecords consumption of electric energy in intervalsand communicates that information back to theutility for monitoring and billing purposes.
Time-based pricing
Net metering
Loss of power notification
Remote turn on / turn off operations Energy prepayment
Power quality monitoring
Tamper and energy theft detection

THEFT DETECTION
FEATURES OF SMART
METERSMeter cover open alarm immediately reports on the
opening of the smart meter.
Reverse current alarm detects rewiring of the meter
causing the current to flow in the reverse direction (may
cause the meter to count back if not taken care of).
Phase unbalanced alarm detects tampering with the
electricity wires.

ADVANTAGES OF AMRAccurate meter reading, no more estimates
Improved billing
Improved security and tamper detection for
equipment
Power quality monitoring
More accurate

DISADVANTAGES OF AMR
Loss of privacy - details of use reveal information
about user activities
Reduced reliability
Increased security risks from network or remote access
Meter readers losing their jobs
