A Reflection From Deacon Paul:
Be What You Were Called to Be In the movie “Black Robe” a priest was sent to an
Iroquois village in Canada to baptize the tribe due to an
epidemic and to teach them Christian values. At the
end of the movie two Iroquois warriors reflect on these
teachings. One says “Black Robe (the priest) says we
should only have one wife and we should love our enemies. If
we do that we will no longer be Iroquois and our enemies will
come and steal our souls.” We see a similar situation the first
reading from Amos and Luke’s Gospel. The Hebrews in the first
reading no longer abided by the teachings of the prophets,
about caring for the poor, the widow, the orphan etc. and their
enemies, they were no longer followers of God and the
Assyrians, did come and take them into captivity. The rich man
ignored the plight of Lazarus, again he was not caring for the
poor, he had turned away from the values his faith had taught
him and his soul was taken away to the underworld where he
suffered. Our values are the foundation of a good life, when we
turn away from our Christian values, evil sources come and take
our souls and we are no longer who we were called to be.
