The National Association of Mining Engineers, the High Council of Professional Associations of Mining Engineers and the Official Professional Association of Mining Engineers of the South are pleased to announce the holding of the 14th International Congress on Energy and Mineral Resources.

A long time has passed since the background to this Congress, the Mining-Metallurgical Dialogues of the 1950s, which then became the Mining-Metallurgical Conference in the 1960s to end up in the International Congress we are now presenting.

Traditionally, H.M. King Juan Carlos I has held the Presidency of the Honour Committee of this Congress, and in this edition this position has been acepted by H.M. King Felipe VI.

With the broad and exciting theme “Sustaining the future”, this Congress intends to become a forum for discussion where all the individuals and entities related to the different fields of action in which mining engineers are present can search for sustainable solutions to the present technological challenges.

Experts, researchers and professionals of companies and administrations will have the chance to enjoy a meeting point to exchange knowledge and, why not, find business opportunities. To this end, technical sessions will be completed with an exhibition area to showcase products and services in front of an international specialized audience. The

term international gains a special significance in this edition with the simultaneous holding of the “Slope Stability in Open Pit Mining and Civil Engineering” Symposium.

In addition to the working sessions, there will be technical visits and an attractive cultural programme for participants and guests, with Seville and its surroundings offering especially attractive opportunities in this field.

A historic review of previous Congresses lets us expect a very successful event in this edition, but this requires the collaboration of all of us and therefore, we call upon your participation.

The Official Professional Association of Mining Engineers of the South has been entrusted by the National Association of Mining Engineers (ANIM) to organize the 14th International Congress on Energy and Mineral Resources.

This Congress represents a great opportunity to disseminate the major developments that have taken place in the different fields in which Mining Engineers have well-recognized profesional qualifications, such as energy, mining and all those related to water.

This next edition of the Congress will include the organization of the “Slope Stability in Open Pit Mining and Civil Engineering” with Workshops by the ACG (Australian Centre for Geomechanics) during the two days prior to the event and in the same Congress venue. All this will make the event even more attractive and should attract more attendants, since there is one single registration fee that will allow for participation at both events.

Moreover, the Congress is even more appealing since it is going to be held in a city with a tremendous charm, Seville, in the middle of an incomparable tourist destination considering the emblematic cities with a great historic relevance that are close to it and –additionally- the proximity to our beautiful neighbour country, Portugal.

The Scientific and Executive Committees of the Congress, as well as the Congress Group formed in our Professional Association, are currently working in the management of the event. They are trying to include in the final Programme the largest possible number of Communications on the improvements in technology, incorporating the large amount of innovations that have taken place in all of the sectors mentioned above in order to discuss them more comprehensively during the Congress.

A clear indicator of the relevance for the region of the sectors addressed by the Congress is represented by the multiple innovative energy facilities built across Andalusia, as well as the operation of all the mining projects in the Iberian Pyrite Belt. Their potential and development is evidenced in the editions of the MMH (Metallic Mining Hall) held in Seville every two years.

In this letter, I want to thank ANIM for the trust they have placed in our Official Association for the organization of an event of such magnitude, and I would also like to encourage you all to plan your attendance to the Congress. We are fully convinced that you will enjoy your participation. We are looking forward to see you and give you our warmest welcome.

SLOPE STABILITY INFORMATION Slope Stability 2018, the VI International Symposium on Slope Stability in Open Pit Mining and Civil Engineering, will be held April 11-13, 2018 in Seville, Spain.

Increasing depths in open pit mining are testing our knowledge of soil and rock mechanics to their limits. These challenges provide an opportunity to development new, state of the art, systems for pit slope design and surveillance.

Apart from international delegates and the support of staff from major international mining companies, the event is organized by the SPANISH MINING COUNCIL with collaboration from key members of major Spanish mining associated institutions.Previous event locations have been Cape Town, Perth, Vancouver, Santiago and Brisbane. It is therefore a truly international forum for the exchange of ideas and innovative developments. Aside from the idyllic location of Seville for the event, there will also be an opportunity to visit some local pyrite belt mines during the week of the event, which may interest you greatly.

The event will provide a forum to exchange views on how to promote best practices in slope engineering, as well as providing an important networking opportunity, this specialty meeting will explore recent innovation and key developments in the design, analysis, excavation and management of rock slopes

Contributions from all the continents are confirmed as well as top key note lecturers from America, Asia, Australia Africa and Europe. These contributions have been organized in the following technical sessions:
