Dear Parishioners, A few years ago, I received an article from a friend entitled "If I were the Devil...". It was written by Fr. Robert Spirtzer, S.J. Ph.D. It reminded me of the Screwtape Letters by C.S. Lewis. But since the Screwtape Letters is a book and cannot be easily shared here, I would like to share this article with you. It will probably take two to three editions of the bulletin to have the whole article printed out because of the limited space so please read and enjoy. This is the first part: On April 3, 1965 ABC radio commentator Paul Harvey's weekly broadcast began, "If I were the Devil... I mean, if I were the Prince of Darkness, I would of course, want to engulf the whole earth in darkness." Harvey then went on to provide a step-by-step account of the deconstruction of western civilization, each step beginning with, "If I were the Devil". Over the years, until his death in 2009, he updated the talk, and multiple versions of it are available online. In honor of his memory I'll stick with his opening line but take a more Spitzerian approach to describing what I consider to be "the Devil's perfect plot." So let us proceed. If I were the Devil I'd deconstruct all the pillars of western civili- zation and the very first thing that I would do is to convince peo- ple that there is no God. I'd seduce leading academics from places like Oxford, Stanford, Harvard and other prestigious universities with promises of wealth and respect for being heroic dismantlers of superstition and myth. They and thousands of disciple atheists (bloggers, talk show hosts, etc.) would intellectually bully the masses into submission. Next I would deconstruct happiness, by telling the world that hap- piness is the feeling you get when you get what you want, regard- less of what "it" is. If your heart is set on wealth, or fame, or even sexual gratification, then you must obey the commands of your heart or else suffer the tragic consequences. In the next few editions of the bulletin I will share more of the ar- ticle. But for now, I believe there is a lot here to reflect on for the week. IT'S SOCKTOBER AGAIN!
Last fall Court Sacred Heart CDA held a collection drive for socks. The response from our parishioners was outstand-
ing! Many organizations and schools benefited from our drive. This year, given the economic downturn, we feel that having another sock drive will help those less fortunate.
Starting the weekend of October 3-November 1, Catholic Daughters will be collecting NEW socks in the vestibule of the church. Feel free to donate any sizes (baby-adult), colors, and styles. There is a laundry basket in the back of the church where you may put your dona-tions. Thank you again for your generosity.

¡ES SOCKTUBER OTRA VEZ!
El otoño pasado, Corte Sagrado Corazón realizó una campaña de co-lección de calcetines. ¡La respuesta de nuestros feligreses fue excelen-te! Muchas organizaciones y escuelas se beneficiaron de nuestro impul-so. Este año, dada la recesión económica, creemos que tener otra colec-ta de calcetines ayudará a los menos afortunados.
A partir del fin de semana del 3 de octubre al 1 de noviembre, las Hijas Católicas colectará calcetines NUEVOS en el vestíbulo de la iglesia. Siéntase libre de donar cualquier tamaño (bebé-adulto), color y estilo. Hay una canasta de ropa en la parte trasera de la iglesia donde puede poner sus donaciones. Gracias otra vez por tu generosidad.

Hace unos años, recibí un artículo de un amigo titulado "Si yo fuera el diablo ...". Fue escrito por el P. Robert Spirtzer, S.J. Doctor. Me recordó a las cartas Screwtape de C.S. Lewis. Pero dado que Screwtape Letters es un libro y no se puede compartir fácilmente aquí, me gustaría compartir este artículo con ustedes. Probablemente se necesitarán dos o tres edicio-nes del boletín para que se imprima el artículo completo debi-do al espacio limitado, así que lea y disfrute. Ésta es la prime-ra parte: El 3 de abril de 1965 comenzó la transmisión semanal del comentarista de radio de ABC Paul Harvey: "Si yo fuera el diablo ... quiero decir, si fuera el Príncipe de las Tinieblas, por supuesto, querría envolver toda la tierra en la oscuridad". Har-vey luego pasó a proporcionar un relato paso a paso de la de-construcción de la civilización occidental, cada paso comen-zando con "Si yo fuera el diablo".
