SAINTS OF THE MONTH:

St Aloysius Gonzaga

June 21

St. Aloysius was the son of a princely family where he grew up in royal courts and army camps of sixteenth century Renaissance in Florence, Italy. His father wanted him to become a military hero. However, from an early age, St. Aloysius was devoted to prayer, the Office of Mary and the psalms. By age 11, he was a catechist teaching poor children, fasting 3 days a week and doing penance. And the more he saw of court life, the more disillusioned he became. Instead, he sought to learn more about the lives of saints. At age 19, he became a Jesuit priest in Rome, renouncing his right to royal succession.

When a plague struck Rome in 1591, the Jesuits opened a hospital there. Because St. Aloysius nursed infected patients and bathed them, he caught the disease. While still maintain-ing great discipline in prayer, he died at the age of 23.

Weekly Message from Deacon Rob on the Sunday Readings

Today and next Sunday, Christians

celebrate two solemnities that have served

as a source of division for a Church that

Jesus desired to be one – the Feast of the

Most Holy Trinity and Corpus Christi. It is

not surprising that the confusion around

these dogmas exist because they reflect

the Mystery of God, Himself, that is beyond

finite comprehension. Tomes have been

written about each of these solemnities

and, still, our understanding of them falls short. Nevertheless,

it is imperative to our faith that some degree of understanding

be reached in order that we, as members of the Divine Family,

function in a manner worthy of sons and daughters of God

through our baptism and union with the Trinity. To begin to

understand, requires us to reflect upon what God has revealed

to us – God is Love. This statement by St. John falls short in our

modern world because we have confused, abused, perverted

and twisted the very meaning of the word. The word has been

overused and under-rated by modern society. We “love” our

work, family, friends, foods, pets, colors and a plethora of

other items. In doing so, we have lost the true meaning of the

word that reflects the Divine – Agape or Sacrificial Love. It is

this type of “love” that produces and generates life and is

responsible for the creation of the universe. It is this type of

love that is the essence of the Trinity, the solemnity celebrated

today. It is this type of “love” that is the foundation of society

and the origin of family in marriage, the sacrament of love. It is

this very sacrament that is the model of the Divine. Once we

have perverted its definition to reflect our own desires and

will, we can lose sight of God and even deny His existence. If

we deny His existence, it then follows, that we deny the very

essence that produces the effects we desire – love. Therefore,

looking at these two solemnities closely will give us an

opportunity to reassert and refocus our attention upon Him

who is the foundation and source of all life.

The solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity celebrates a dogma of

the Church that was frequently attacked. Professing a belief in

one God, early Christians were confronted with many heresies

that thought a Trinitarian belief was contrary to the Faith. Most

prominently asserting this was the Arian heresy in the 4th

century. Church Fathers struggled to clarify this tenet by

affirming that there was only one God with three Divine

Persons. The question of the Divine Union was finally affirmed

at Church Councils summoned by the Roman emperors to help

quell the unrest the question created. Today, using Sacred

Scripture, Church Fathers, guided by the Holy Spirit, were able

to reveal this mystery about God’s nature. Today, that solution

is professed every time we recite the Nicaean Creed at the

Celebration of the Sacred Mysteries. Succinctly and only

partially reasoned, the Father’s love for the

Son, the Word, through the Holy Spirit

began creation as described in the Book of

Genesis. All life, through love, was

generated for Him. He, Jesus, is the King of

All. As the prologue to the Gospel by John

says, “…All things came into being through

him, and without him not one thing came

into being.” Thus, in the beginning the

Word existed with God and, as revealed in

this Gospel, was the source of all life. Furthermore, Church

Fathers saw the role of the Holy Spirit, Christ’s promised

Advocate, throughout Sacred Scripture slowly unveiling the

Trinitarian existence and nature of God. Finally, Jesus’

command to His disciples to go forth and baptize all nations in

the name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit affirmed this

unique Trinitarian mystery of God.

This unique belief in one God in three natures or persons set

the stage for the revelation of other mysteries revealed in the

sacraments. Most importantly, is the sacrament of Matrimony

– the sacrament that best reflects this Divine Union. Through

the guidance of the Holy Spirit, Holy Mother the Church

teaches that this sacrament reflects that same union on the

mortal scale. Like the Divine, two individuals come together in

love and generate a new creation reflecting the Divine. This is

the theology behind marriage and why the new twisted

definition by the world is rejected by the Church. The Sacred

Icon has been obscured so as to reject the self-sacrificial union

that is capable of generating new life for an image of self-

gratification with the absence of life-generating possibilities. It

has always been the Divine Will as reflected in the Trinity, to

give, sacrifice and produce life through agape love. Thus, God

has handed mankind an icon of Himself in order that mankind

can continue in the Divine image in which he was made.

Thus, today’s solemnity exists to remind us of God’s desire to

be one with his creation. He has revealed, to the extent that

our minds can understand, His own unique Being reflected

through the icon He has bestowed upon us. Holy Mother the

Church desires us to open our minds to this mystery and the

icon God has given us. She calls us to celebrate on this

solemnity the Maker’s desire to be one with all. Next week’s

celebration of Corpus Christi will reflect this same agape love

and this same Divine desire reflected through another Divinely

bestowed sacrament – Corpus Christi.
