Weekly Message from Deacon Rob on the Readings for Ordinary Time
As we draw closer to the end of the Church year, our focus turns towards its mission – the restoration of God’s Kingdom through the spread of the Gospel. As members of God’s family and participants in the New Covenant of Christ, the re-creation of the world and the restoration of order is the mandate given to us. This mandate often involves the destruction of the old and the rebirth of the new. This restoration is accomplished through the use of the “Fire” bestowed upon us by God. It is through the Holy Spirit, the Divine Fire, that the corrupt is purified and the seed for new growth planted. God’s “Fire” enables us to bear the struggle against the forces of the world that reject the sacrifices and pain that is associated with this rebirth.
In the first reading from the Book of the Prophet Jeremiah, God’s appointed prophet Jeremiah finds himself at odds with the military leaders and the king. Jeremiah is speaking the truth – Jerusalem will fall due to the breech of its covenant with God. This unpleasant and unpatriotic proclamation has him thrown into the cistern where he is starving to death; however, at the request of Ebed-melech, a Cushite, the prophet is released to continue to do God’s will. Thus, the reading reveals the inevitable – God’s Salvation Plan will not be thwarted by mankind. Instead, though destruction may be inevitable, it clears the way for the new and the eventual success of the Divine.
This same technique of cleansing the old and eliminating the corrupt in preparation for the new and eternal is the theme of today’s second reading from the letter to the Hebrews. The passage today reveals how Christ, Himself, had to endure the pain, suffering, humiliation and crucifixion resulting in his physical death in order to be the manifestation of God’s salvation plan. The Hebrews are reminded that they, too, must forsake the world and accept, with the same faith, what God has in store for them. As Christians, they are called to purify themselves
even if it results in the shedding of their blood as exemplified by Jesus, himself.
In today’s concluding Gospel by Luke, Jesus divulges his mission to “set the earth on fire…”. The wording is significant. In Biblical times, fire was a
word used with many connotations. One usage was to portray the Divine (Holy Spirit), another meaning saw it as a purifying agent and/or as a punitive punishment. Finally, fire could be seen as a motivating and enthusiastic force; therefore, Christ’s use of this word contains a plethora of roles to which he is privy and desires to reveal to his disciples. As stated, the, Messiah desires that the process had already started as he foretells his own baptism by “fire” – his crucifixion. This “baptism” is Christ’s own voluntary immersion into death followed by his resurrection or “new birth” in body and Spirit. The Lord explains that His mission, and the mission of his disciples, will cause division among people – even family and friends. His “Good News” demands the same sacrificial love, agape, that he exemplified. This is true love. It is the Divine Love.
Holy Mother the Church reminds us of our calling. She uses today’s liturgy to refresh in our minds our calling to purify with Sacred fire our own lives and manner of living in order that the seed sown at our baptism can be fruitful and rebuild the Kingdom in the here and now. Simultaneously, the cost or sacrifice we will endure is the foundation of the new and perfected world to which we are called as children of God. We are called, like Christ, to embrace with enthusiasm this “baptism” of fire in order that the Father’s Will can be accomplished. Through the “fire” of the Holy Spirit and the “fire” of our faith in the Heavenly Father, the world will be made anew and all of Creation will be brought to perfection. Thus, as Christians, we are mandated to set the world on fire!
