Every Wednesday, the Plaza Virgen de la Peña is full of the sounds of fl amenco. The dance group Azabache presents on stage, the best of the Andalucian tradition in this fi eld. The show is free and is enormously popular with residents and visitors.

Basándose en ‘Las voces de Penélope’, una adaptación de Itziar Pascual del clásico de Homero, la compañía de Ana Fargas nos propone una original puesta en escena a caballo entre el teatro y el fl amenco.

El objetivo de la obra no es otro que mostrar el segundo plano que ha tenido históricamente la mujer, así como su lucha por la igualdad. En todo este camino, el fl amenco será el hilo argumental, con un amplio recorrido por los distintos palos de este arte: tonás, malagueñas, seguiriyas, peteneras, alegrías, fandangos o tangos. No faltarán tampoco instrumentos clásicos como el chelo, el contrabajo, el violín, la guitarra fl amenca o la percusión.

Based on ‘Penélope’s Voices’, an adaptation of Homer’s classic, the Ana Fragas Theatre Company proposes an original staging between theatre and fl amenco.

The purpose of the work is non other than to show the background that women have had historically, and their struggle for equality. In this way, fl amenco is the storyline, with an extensive tour of the different styles of this art: tones, malagueñas, seguiriyas, peteneras, alegrias, fandangos and tango. There will also be classic intruments such as the cello, bass, violin, fl amenco guitar and percussion.

El mito de Penélope recogido en la Odisea de Homero presenta a la abnegada esposa de Ulises y madre de Telémaco, que ha de soportar durante 20 años la esposa de su esposo y rey de Ítaca.

Se trata de una marcha impuesta por los dioses, en la que el héroe recorre infinidad de aventuras, mientras que Penélope tendrá que esperar a su esposo y resistir a todos aquellos que pretendan desposarla como mecanismo para conseguir el reinado de Ítaca.

The myth of Penélope reflected in Homer’s Odyssey presents the devoted wife of Odysseus and mother of Telemachus, who had to endure 20 years without her husband, the King of Ithaca. This has been imposed by the Gods, in which the hero endures endless adventures, while Penelope has to wait for her husband and at the same time, resist all those who want to marry her as a way of obtaining the kingdom of Ithaca.

Asima es un colectivo ciudadano que se creó en 1989 para trabajar en el entorno del VIH/SIDA. Actualmente disponen de tres centros en Málaga y hacen un esfuerzo especial en la prevención y el asesoramiento. Ahora llegan a La Cala con una exposición que busca concienciar.

Asima is a citizen’s collective group created in 1989 to work on HIV/AIDS programmes. Currently they have three centres in Malaga and concentrate on prevention and advice. Now they will visit La Cala with an exhibition aimed at making people think and be more aware.

El próximo 19 de marzo, la Casa Museo de Mijas abre sus puertas a la exposición del pintor José Carlos González Herrera, una muestra que permanecerá en este recinto hasta el 5 de mayo mostrando una selección de algunas de las obras más representativas de este artista. En sus trabajos, el autor nos sorprende con imágenes cotidianas, ya sea de personajes, que aparecen leyendo, disfrutando del mar...o de ciudades como Madrid, inmersas en el trárfi co y la celeridad.

On the 19th of March, the Folk Museum in Mijas Pueblo opens its doors for painter José Carlos González Herrera, a permanent display that can be seen until the 5th of May. It shows some of the most representative works of the artist. His works illustrate daily life, with images of people reading or enjoying the sea and citizens from places such as Madrid, immersed in the speed of traffi c.

El Teatro Las Lagunas presenta el 20 de marzo a la Joven Orquesta Provincial de Málaga, un colectivo formado por niños y jóvenes hasta los 25 años que apuesta por fomentar la afi ción musical en la provincia y en toda Andalucía. En el teatro lagunero, la formación interpretará un repertorio basado en todas las épocas y estilos, desde el barroco alemán e italiano, hasta el clasicismo y el romanticisco europeos, sin olvidar la música española o la contemporánea, todo ello, bajo la batuta de uno de los directores más reconocidos de nuestra tierra, el jiennense Ángel Luis Pérez Garrido.

The Las Lagunas Theatre presents the Provincial Youth Orchestra of Malaga on the 20th of March, a group comprising young people up to the age of 25 who strive to encourage a love of music in the province and in the whole of Andalucia. At the Las Lagunas Theatre, the group will interpret a repertoire based on all periods and styles, from Italian and German baroque to classicism and romanticism, not forgetting Spanish music and the contemporary, all of this under the baton of one of the most renowned directors of our land, Angel Luis Perez Garrido from Jaen.

Animar a la lectura y ensalzar los cuentos. Son dos de los propósitos de ‘La magia de los libros’, una obra de teatro infantil puesta en escena por el grupo de animación mijeño Trobadores, que llegará al Teatro Las Lagunas el próximo 21 de marzo para divertir a grandes y pequeños.

To animate reading and give praise to storytelling, these are the two main intentions of ‘The Magic of Books’, a children’s play staged by the Mijeño Troubador Animation Group, who come to the Las Lagunas Theatre on the 21st of March to entertain children and adults alike.

Under the leadership of Carlota, a girl who doesn’t like reading, the troubadors present a series of characters who attract Carlota’s attention until she becomes excited about reading.

Hasta la Casa de la Cultura de Las Lagunas llegará a través de una exposición colectiva las obras de las artistas Carmina Núñez y Marta Cora. Durante la inauguración, el público podrá contemplar una original actuación que abarcará diferentes registros artísticos como danza, bailes tradicionales, interpretación, poesía o canto. La pincelada folclórica correrá a cargo de la asociación de mujeres de los Santos de Maimona.

Works by artists Carmina Núñez and Marta Cora arrive to the Cultural Centre in Las Lagunas in a collective exhibition. During the inauguration of the exhibition, the public will be able to enjoy an original show that will include dance, traditional dances, a live performance, poetry and singing. SINOPSIS.- Manolo es un joven banquero que ha llegado alto en la vida. Tiene una buena posición, bienestar...pero todo no es un camino de rosas. Salud, su mujer, está tomando las aguas de Villabromurada después de una depresión postparto. Él trabaja y se hace cargo del bebé.

Dirigida por Daniel Veronesse, ‘Los Corderos’ se presenta como una obra teatral oscura, con indirectas pero implacables referencias a un mundo degradado y a una época feroz, concebida en un sutil contrapunto con la pseudo- tranquilidad y alegría de un ‘reencuentro’ familiar... El texto condensa los tópicos sobre los cuales siempre ha indagado el autor. De alguna forma, es una parodia de aquellos elementos costumbristas sobre los que el realismo imprimió un signo positivo.

El barrio, la familia, la fi gura del buen vecino... se hallan envueltos de un halo de extrañamiento, resultan súbitamente ajenos, han mutado en potenciales focos de horror... Es una propuesta de desconocimientos, indiferencias, desamores, incesto... Gómez aparece vendado y atado en casa de Berta. Desconoce las razones y Berta rehúsa darle explicaciones. Aparece Fermín, vecino de la casa, que quiere llevarse a la niña, hija de Berta, a pasear. Berta se lo impide... Tendrán que ver la obra. Ya saben, el 27 de marzo.

Directed by Daniel Veronesse, ‘The Lambs’ presents itself as a dark stage play, with indirect but implacable references to a degraded world and a fi erce epoch conceived in a subtle counterpoint with the pseudo - calmness and happiness of a family ‘renunion’...The text condenses the topics on which the author has always investigated. In some form, it is a parody of those elements of local customs and manners on which the printed realism is a positive sign. The area, family, the fi gure of

the good neighbour...are wrapped by an air of wonderful aura, that is suddenly foreign and has mutated horrifi cally... it becomes a proposal of ignorances, indifferences, lack of affection, incest...Gomez turns out to be bound, tied up at Berta’s. The reasons are not known and Berta refuses to give any explanation. Fermin, a neighbour appears and wants to take Berta’s daughter for a walk but Berta prevents it. You have to see the play on the 27th of March to know what happens!

They will recognise his face but this time it will be in the skin of an artist and not dressed as a magician, as most know him, Jose Gomez Guerrero, the Merin Magician, invites us to discover his pedagogical display of children’s instruments from all over the world. A unique collection in which we fi nd a selection of around 600 pieces of the 3,000 with which this fuengiroleño uses to give us a passionate account of this culture. “And all my instruments have sound” says the artist himself. There are old instruments from fi ve continents to be found in this exhibiton, which is for children and adults alike. Jose Gomez Guerrero also wants to share his art with others and gives workshops in instrument making. The artist has also endorsed the Mijeña Carmen Escalona idea who continues to surprise us with the ceramics workshop.

Rea Dance Company will head

this project giving three dance

workshops during March and April

in the Las Lagunas Theatre.

In particular, the styles offered will

include contemporary, classic and

El Teatro Las Lagunas se ha

propuesto que su recinto sea un

punto de encuentro y de ocio para

todos. Por eso, ha programado una

curiosa ‘Escuela de espectadores’.

Se trata de una iniciativa orientada

You can express your romantic sentiments on paper as the Council for Culture have invited everyone to participate in the XV edition of the Love Letters Competition of the Villa de Mijas. A competition that invites afi cionados of the written word to put pen to paper and write about love or past love, and you could win a prize for your efforts and talent!Those of you keen to take part,

must remember to write your piece in Spanish and not use more than 2 sheets of paper with typed double spacing or legibly written by hand. When handing in the text the candidate must handover three more copies, so four in total. Each one signed on the front and the back and with full name, address and contact telephone number. Los seguidores del atletismo tienen una cita este mes en La Cala. Después del inicio de la competición en noviembre en Las Lagunas, el XVI circuito de millas populares de Mijas llega al núcleo caleño el próximo 14 de marzo. Los participantes afrontarán un recorrido caracterizado por la linealidad en la que es la prueba más asequible de todo el torneo. El recorrido se desarrollará en el recinto ferial de La Cala, donde ya el pasado año se dieron cita unos 300 deportistas.

Followers of athletics have an important appointment this month in La Cala. After the start of this competition in November at Las Lagunas, the XVI circuit of the Mijas popular miles comes to the caeleño nucleus on March the 14th. Participants will confront a run characterised by the linearity, making it one of the most accessible tests of the tournament. El Hipódromo Costa del Sol acoge un año más los Juegos Provinciales Populares que organiza la Diputación de Málaga. En ellos se puede inscribir cualquier atleta profesional o no de toda la provincia. El evento supone la realización de tres pruebas: una de velocidad, otra de resistencia y una última que alterna -en función de las edades- salto y lanzamiento. La respuesta de los deportistas siempre suele ser buena y el nivel de participación ronda las 400 personas. En la localidad, el grueso más importante lo componen los miembros del Club Altetismo Mijas y los alumnos de los colegios. No lo olvides: el 6 de marzo a las 10:00 horas.

Once again the Costa del Sol Hipodromo has been chosen as the venue to host the Provincial Popular Games organised by the Delegation of Malaga. For these games any professional or amatuer athlete can inscribe from anywhere in the province. The event has three tests to be achieved: One for speed, one for resistance and the last for alternates - according to age throwing and jumping. The response of the athletes is always a good one and the level of participation is usually around 400 persons. Los abuelos de Mijas pueden hacer las maletas. La concejalía de Tercera Edad prepara una nueva edición del viaje para la 3ª Edad, que este año los llevará a la provincia de Cádiz. Para participar, hay que ser residente en Mijas, estar empadronado desde hace 3 años, así como ser pensionista o jubilado con más de 60 años.

El viaje, al cierre de esta revista, se encuentra en período de concurso y aunque no hay fecha concreta, será en la primera quincena de abril. Este año serán tres días y dos noches de viaje.

En cuanto al coste, las cantidades a pagar se han fi jado en función a la renta anual del jubilado. Así, el viaje será gratuito para las personas solas cuya pensión mensual sea inferior a los 570 euros, y también viajarán gratis aquellos matrimonios cuya renta mensual conjunta sea menor a 696 euros. 41 euros tendrán que pagar los jubilados cuya pensión oscile entre los 572 y los 811 euros, o los matrimonios cuya pensión conjunta esté entre los 697 y los 1.012 euros. Para aquellas personas con renta mensual entre los 1014 y 1126 euros, y los matrimonio que estén entre los 1537 y los 1843 euros, la cuantía del viaje ronda los 123 euros; y por último, si la pensión supera los 1126 euros en el caso de un jubilado, o los 1843 euros, si se trata de un matrimonio, el viaje tendrá un coste de 165 euros.

Estamos en la antesala de la Semana Santa, unos días de fervor religioso para quienes tienen fe y aún más si cabe para quienes participan de forma directa en su desarrollo, bien acompañando o portando a hombros las imágenes.

Pero, independientemente de su signifi cado litúrgico y espiritual, ésta fi esta es una tradición tras la que se esconde un gran valor cultural. En Mijas son seis las cofradías y hermandades que salen a la calle en la Semana de Pasión y tras cada una de ellas hay una historia que contar.

La Semana de Pasión se inicia el Domingo de Ramos con la procesión de la Pollinica. En Mijas, ninguna hermandad en concreto organiza su salida, por lo que el desfi le procesional es fruto del esfuerzo de todas. En la ermita de la Virgen de la Peña tiene lugar la tradicional bendición de palmas y olivas. Tras este momento, los vecinos van en procesión hasta la iglesia de la Inmaculada, donde, después de la misa, sale la imagen de la Pollinica a hombros de los jugadores del Club Deportivo Mijas. El acompañamiento musical corresponde a la Banda Virgen de la Peña y San Sebastián.

The Passion Week begins on Palm Sunday with the Pollinica Procession. In Mijas, no brotherhood in particular organises this, therefore the processionary parade is the fruit of everyones efforts. The traditional blessings for the palms and olives takes place in the Virgen de la Peña chapel. After this, residents join the procession up to the Inmaculada Church, where, after the mass, the image of the Pollinica is taken out on the shoulders of the Mijas Sports Club players, accompanied by appropriate music from the Virgen de la Peña and San Sebastian Band.

We are on the threshold of Easter week, several days of religious fervour for those who have faith and for those who directly take part in the development of the proceedings or carrying the image on their shoulders. But, independently of this liturgical and spiritual meaning, this traditional fi esta has great cultural value. In Mijas six of the Brotherhoods fraternity that take to the streets during Easter week have immense historical count.

Manuel Secuella fue quien esculpió la imagen del Cristo de la Columna. Cada Miércoles Santo la Ermita de Nuestra Señora de los Remedios abre sus puertas para permitir que este Cristo salga a pasear bajo la luz de la luna. El Barrio Santana, la Plaza de la Libertad, calle Carril… son algunos de los enclaves marcados en su recorrido y que producen bellas imágenes por la estrechez de las vías, pero para el hermano mayor de esta Cofradía, Francisco Roca, sin duda, el instante más especial es a su llegada a la Plaza de los Siete Caños. Aunque otro momento emocionante es a su paso por la ermita de San Sebastián, donde les espera la hermandad del Nazareno.

Manuel Secuella was the person who sculptured the image of Christ’s Column. Every Holy Wednesday the Ermita de Nuestra Señora de los Remedios open their doors to enable Christ’s image to be seen under the moonlight. The Barrio Santana, the Plaza de la Libertad, Carril street... are just some of the enclaves visited on this journey and they poduce beautiful images en route. But the most special moment, without doubt, for the older brother of this Brotherhood, Francisco Roca, is the arrival at the Siete Caños. Although another special moment is when they arrive at the steps of Ermita San Sebastian, where the Nazarene Brotherhood await them.

La Hermandad del Dulce Nombre de Jesús Nazareno, María Santísima de los Dolores y San Juan Bautista es una de las más antiguas del municipio. Su fundación se remonta a principios del siglo XVII. La túnica de terciopelo morada bordada en oro del Cristo se mece al son del viento en Mijas cada Jueves Santo. Tras él va la imagen de Los Dolores, impregnando de solemnidad el ambiente.

Otro de los momentos emotivos se produce el Martes Santo, cuando tiene lugar el

The Sweet Jesus of Nazareth Brotherhhod, Maria Santisima of Pain and Saint John the Baptist is one of the most ancient in the municipality. It was founded at the beginning of the XVII century. There is the

El Jueves Santo son dos las cofradías que procesionan por las calles del pueblo. Una de ellas es la del Cristo de la Paz, María Santísima de la Soledad y San Juan Evangelista, una Hermandad con mucha historia, de hecho los primeros documentos históricos que se refi eren a ella datan de 1.598, cuando se denominaba hermandad de la Santa Vera-Cruz.

Como nota curiosa, Su Majestad, el rey d. Juan Carlos I es hermano mayor honorario de esta hermandad desde 1984.

On Maundy Thursday the fraternities take two processions through the village. One of which is Christ of Peace, Maria Santisma of Solitude and Saint John the Evangelist, a Brotherhood with a long history, indeed the fi rst historical documents refer back to 1598 when it was known as the Santa Vera Cruz Brotherhood.

On a more curious note, His Majesty, King D. Juan Carlos I has been an honourary brother of this guild since 1984.

El Viernes de Pasión es un día de respeto. En Mijas Pueblo, el Santo Entierro sale de la Iglesia de la Inmaculada ante el silencio de los presentes. De fondo, tan solo la marcha fúnebre de la Banda de Música Virgen de la Peña y San Sebastián.

A esta bella fi gura inerte de un cristo de pequeñas dimensiones que reposa sin vida le sigue María Santísima de la Soledad.

Las procesiones se cierran el domingo en Mijas Pueblo con el Cristo Resucitado, que se procesiona por la mañana.

En Las Lagunas, el fervor se empieza a vivir el mismo Jueves Santo, cuando la Hermandad de Jesús Vivo lleva cabo un Via Crucis viviente en el que los vecinos rememoran con su interpretación la Pasión y Muerte de Cristo.

La Hermandad de Jesús Vivo y Nuestra Señora de la Paz es quien cuida y prepara con esmero la imagen del Cristo de la Unión. En este trono se refl eja el momento de la crucifi xión de Jesús. A los pies le acompaña la Virgen de la Piedad. Asimismo, este trono precede en el camino al de la Virgen de la Paz.

The Brotherhood of Living Jesus and our Lady of Peace are the keepers and prepare the image of the Union of Christ. His crown refl ects the moment of the crucifi xion of Jesus. At his feet he is accompanied by the Virgin of Mercy. This crown also takes precedence on the way to the Virgin of Peace.

La CalaEn La Cala, los vecinos de este núcleo acompañan al Cristo Crucifi cado cada Viernes Santo en su salida. Las mujeres son quienes portan a hombros a la Virgen de los Dolores.

La imagen de los tronos meciéndose ante el cante de una saeta bajo la tenue luz de las velas es uno de los momentos que merece la pena retener para el recuerdo.
