El estado de Sinaloa cuenta con la ubica-ción estratégica al noroeste de México, in-tegrada por la excelente fusión de paisajes de tierra, mar y cielo; de ríos y vegetación.

Al norte colinda con los estados de Sonora y Chi-huahua; al sur, con Nayarit, al este con Durango y al oeste con el Golfo de California y el Océano Pacífico.

Este lugar de aguas cristalinas y de extraordina-ria diversidad biológica es el que inspiró al oceanó-grafo Jacques-Yves Cousteau a llamarlo “Acuario del Mundo”. La orografía, procedente de la Sierra Madre Occidental, da lugar a importantes unidades monta-ñosas que ven cruzar 11 ríos y 12 presas. Cuenta con 656 kilómetros del litoral pertenecientes en mayoría al Golfo de California.

Las variantes del relieve provocan presencia diversa de climas, predominando el cálido en la faja costera.

La capital del estado es Culiacán, destacada loca-lidad industrial y agrícola, le sigue en importancia y tamaño Mazatlán, dentro los destinos turísticos más reconocidos en México, el cual recibe anualmente a más de 1.5 millón de turistas y ocupa 5to lugar en nivel nacional en destinos de sol y playa.

Por cielo, mar y tierra, el estado y 18 municipios están conectados a través de 3 aeropuertos interna-cionales ubicados en Mazatlán, Culiacán y los Mo-chis; dos puertos de gran envergadura como Topolo-bambo y Mazatlán y la extraordinaria red carretera, que conecta a Mazatlán a sólo 4.5 horas de Guada-lajara y próximamente, a través de la Supervía, a 2.5 horas de Durango.

SINALOA AND ITS DIVERSITYIt has an exceptional location in the Northwestern part of Mexico. The State is a fusion of beautiful landscapes, extraordinary weather and extensive coastlines merging with the “natural aquarium of the world”, all of which make Sinaloa a unique destination.The State of Sinaloa has a strategic location in the Northwestern part of Mexico, with a wonderful fusion of landscapes, land, oceans, blue skies, rivers and vegetation. It has the following borders: on the North, the States of Sonora and Chihuahua; on the South, Nayarit; on the East, Durango; and on the West, the Gulf of California and the Pacific Ocean. This crystal-clear water site –full of biological diversity– is what inspired Oceanographer Jacques-Yves Cousteau to call it “Aquarium of the World”. The orography, coming from the Sierra Madre Occidental mountain range, gives place to significant mountain complexes which include 11 rivers and 12 damns. It has 656 Kms (408 miles) of coastlines most of which are mainly in the Gulf of California. These variations lead to different climates with hot weather mainly along the coastal belt. The capital city of the State is Culiacan, known for its industrial and agricultural activities. It is followed in size and importance by Mazatlan, one of the most widely-known tourist destinations in Mexico, which annually receives more than 1.5 million tourists and ranks 5th as a preferred sun and beach destination nationwide. fiesta alegórica de México. They have been considered as UNESCO World Heritage due to their ecological richness and importance. Birds Island is a sanctuary and the largest refuge in Latin America for sea birds; whereas Deer Island is the largest of the three offering a unique cultural heritage where one can find petroglyphs –aside from being the ideal place to enjoy water activities. On the other hand, Stone Island is a spa dating back from the 19th Century; at the time the Mazatlecan families would cross the Puntilla canal using canoes to enjoy their long and wide beaches that are still an ideal place for recreational activities.

Todos quienes conocen Cosalá, saben que ahí hay magia y basta comprobar-

lo caminando por calles colori-das, admirar las bellas construc-ciones coloniales y adentrarse en su historia.

Localizada en las faldas de la Sierra Madre, este Pueblo Mági-co es el antiguo centro minero de Nuestra Señora de las Once Mil Vírgenes de Cosalá. Al inicio de la Independencia de México, era considerada la población más próspera del noroeste de México, con más de 50 minas. Las suntuo-sas casas que se pueden encontrar a lo largo del pueblo dan idea de la gran riqueza que se concentraba en la región. Cuenta con más de 250 edificios históricos, muchos pueden conocerse en agradable pa-seo a pie o sobre carruaje antiguo tirado por caballos En esta zona destaca el Templo de Santa Úrsula, edificado alrededor de 1730 por la Compañía de Jesús. Es ideal para

practicar pesca deportiva y dis-frutar de las aguas termales de San José de las Bocas y adentrarse en la Reserva Ecológica de Guadalupe de los Reyes.

El FuErtE, la joya colonial

El municipio El Fuerte, asen-tado a orillas del río del mismo nombre es consi-

derado dentro de los pueblos más bellos del noroeste de México, sitio único, donde la arquitectura de la época colonial reina con to-do el esplendor. Para muestra el Templo del Sagrado Corazón, del siglo XVIII, el Palacio Munici-pal, la Plaza de Armas y la Posada de Hidalgo. Recorrer estas calles significa transportarse al pasado colonial por medio de pintoresca y ordenada urbanización, donde los indígenas aún danzan durante las ceremonias rituales. No puede faltar la visita al Cerro de la Más-cara, sitio de petroglifos, donde es posible practicar ciclismo, kayak y pesca deportiva.

COSALA, SILVER AND GOLD

All those who have visited Cosala, know there is magic in the place. This can be attested by walking through its picturesque streets, looking at the colonial architecture and learning about its history. It is located on the skirts of the Sierra Madre mountain range. This Magic Town is the former Nuestra Señora de las Once Mil Vírgenes de Cosala mining center. At the beginning of the Mexican Independence, it was considered the most prosperous town in the

Northwestern part of Mexico, with more than 50 mines. The magnificent houses that can be found along the town, show the grandeur the region had at the time with more than 250 historical buildings; many of which can be visited a foot or on an old carriage pulled by horses. In this zone, Santa Ursula Temple, which was built around 1730 by the Society of Jesus, stands out. It is an ideal area to practice sports fishing and to enjoy the thermal springs of San Jose de las Bocas, as well as to enter Guadalupe de los Reyes’s Ecological Reserve.

EL FUERTE –A COLONIAL JEWEL

El Fuerte Municipality is located on the banks or El Fuerte River. It is considered among the most beautiful towns in the Northwestern part of Mexico. It is a unique site where colonial architecture of the time has a majestic presence. As an example, there is the Sacred Heart Temple dating back from the 18th Century, the Municipal Palace, the Plaza de Armas Square and the Posada de Hidalgo historic building. Strolling its streets means to go back to colonial times through a picturesque and ordered urbanization. Here, one can see native people still dancing during their ritual ceremonies. A visit to the Hill of the Mask, a place of petroglyphs, is a must, where it is possible to go cycling, kayaking and sports fishing.

Es la pequeña ciudad que con-vive con el pasado arquitectó-nico de los edificios, con las

tradiciones que se aferran a perdu-rar, y con el marco natural que ena-mora a cualquiera. Caminar por el Malecón entre frondosa vegetación o pasear en catamarán es la gran experiencia, lo mismo que visitar el Cerro de Monge, con mirador pano-rámico o practicar pesca deportiva. En el municipio hay más de 12 mil miembros de la etnia mayo-yoreme que mantienen intactas las costum-bres ancestrales en las fiestas, ritua-les, gastronomía y artesanía y que invitan al turismo a ser parte de ellas.

El rosario

Los paseos por el pueblo tie-nen el fresco remanso en la sombra de huanacaxt-

les y árboles frutales de la Laguna del Iguanero, criadero natural de iguanas y espacio recreativo de las familias rosarenses. A 36 km de la cabecera municipal se localiza el pueblo de Chametla, que muestra en el Museo Comunitario más de 450 piezas arqueológicas, pero tam-

bién aquí se encuentra el Museo en honor a la cantante vernácula Lola Beltrán, quien es oriunda de este pueblo. Además de la belleza del Templo de Nuestra Señora del Ro-sario, se halla el Templo de San Pe-dro Apóstol, construido en 1798.

Elota

Para quienes aprecian los es-cenarios naturales para des-cansar o divertirse, Elota es

el lugar ideal. Lugareños, surfistas y ecologistas se reúnen en la Playa Ceuta, con largo malecón, palapas y restaurantes contiguos. Esta misma se conecta con el cercano Santuario de la Tortuga Marina que libera todos los días, a partir de agosto, cientos de pequeños ejemplares. A 30 km de la cabecera municipal (La Cruz) se localiza la Presa Aurelio Benassini Vizcaíno, mejor cono-cida como Presa El Salto. En ella encontrarás estupendos clubes de pesca deportiva.

Mocorito

La Reserva Ecológica Los Álamos, el río Mocorito y la zona serrana del muni-

cipio, brindan excelentes alter-

nativas para la recreación ecotu-rística: kayakismo, senderismo, aguas termales y mucho más. Además este pintoresco pueblo cuenta con vasto patrimonio arquitectónico, tan sólo en el primer cuadro se concentran 80 casonas y monumentos. El paseo cultural lo encabeza el Templo de la Purísima Concepción, cuyo in-terior resguarda 14 grabados del siglo XVI. Reconocida por origi-nalidad, la gastronomía regional tiene sabrosos representantes en el chilorio, el chorizo y las palo-mas; en las bizcotelas, coricos y por si algo faltara, el jamoncillo de Mocorito es el más rico postre.

Entre los atractivos de Villa de Ahome se encuentra el Palacio Municipal, de los

monumentos históricos más re-presentativos de la localidad así como los álamos, varios de los cuales tienen más de cien años de antigüedad.

SINALOA DE LEYVA

It is a small town which combines the historic architecture of its buildings with its traditions. These traditions cling to prevail offering a natural framework enticing for all visitors. Walking on the Pier through its lush vegetation or taking a ride in a catamaran is a great experience, as well as visiting Monge Hill, with a panoramic view, or practicing sport fishing. In the Municipality, there are more than 12,000 indigenous people belonging to the Mayo-Yoreme group. They maintain the ancient habits in their celebrations, rituals, food and handcrafts, all of which invite tourism to become part of them.

EL ROSARIO

Going out for a walk in town has a fresh backwater under the shadow of huanacaxtle and fruit trees of the Iguanero Lagoon, which is a natural farm of iguanas and a recreational area for the local families. 36 kms (22 miles) away from the Municipality Administrative Center, we find a town called Chametla, which offers a Community Museum with more than 450 archeological pieces. Also here, we can find a Museum to honor the vernacular singer Lola Beltran, who was born in this town. Aside from the beauty of Nuestra Señora del Rosario Temple, we find San Pedro Apostol Temple built in 1798.

ELOTA

For those who love natural scenarios for enjoyment or having a good time, Elota is the place. Locals, surfers and environmentalist get together on Ceuta Beach, with its long Pier, palm shelters and series of restaurants. It is also connected with the nearby Sea Turtle Sanctuary which as of the month of August releases hundreds of small specimens. 30 kms (19 miles) away from the Administrative Center of the Municipality (La Cruz), we find Aurelio Benassini Vizcaíno Damn, better known as El Salto Damn. Here, you will be able to find wonderful sport fishing clubs.

MOCORITO

Los Alamos Ecological Reserve, Mocorito River and the Mountain Zone of the Municipality, offer excellent alternatives for ecotourism: kayaking, trailing, thermal springs, and much more. Additionally, this picturesque town has a large architectural heritage, since downtown offer 80 old houses and monuments to see. The cultural stroll is started at the Purisima Concepcion Temple, whose interior holds 14 engravings from the 16th Century. Mocorito is acknowledged for its originality in regional food. It has delicious representative traditional dishes, such as: chilorio (pulled pork), chorizo sausage and squabs; bizcotelas (pastries), coricos (corn cookies) and if this was not enough, jamoncillo de Mocorito, a delicious dessert.

VILLA DE AHOME

Among the attractions of Villa de Ahome, we find its Municipal Palace, one of the most representative historical monuments of the place as well as its Poplars, several of which are more than one hundred years old.

SAN IGNACIO

The picturesque town of San Ignacio is charming because of its beautiful colonial buildings, history, activities and legends of hidden treasures. The Cristo de la Mesa, San Ignacio Loyola Temple and Barras de Piaxtla, are only some of the places worthwhile visiting. Also, Las Labradas is an acknowledged archeological destination which attests the voice of our ancestors.

El Festival Cultural en Sinaloa es ejemplo de ello, otra pieza funda-mental en el quehacer cultural del estado es, sin duda, la Orquesta Sin-fónica Sinaloa de las Artes (OSSLA), merecedora de importantes recono-cimientos por el extraordinario re-pertorio musical y la excelente ejecu-

ción, con más de 100 presentaciones anuales. Joya artística es también la obra de Antonio López Sáenz, pintor y escultor que ha plasmado el sabor de Sinaloa en lienzos, barro y bronce. Es Mazatlán, tierra de mayor fuente de inspiración y así lo demuestra ca-da pincelada.

La experiencia de viaje por Sinaloa incluye también el encuentro con la arqueología,

al sur del Estado, en el Mu-nicipio de San Ignacio, se ubican los sitios con mayor magia del país: Las Labra-das, piedras de origen vol-cánico en donde nuestros más remotos antepasados nos dejaron el legado de vi-sión del universo.

Se trata del hermoso sitio arqueológico de aguas trans-parentes y arenas suaves don-de yacen cientos de piedras de colores negruzcos y azulados, suavemente desgastadas por el embate de la naturaleza, pero increíblemente aún decoradas por la incontable cantidad de petroglifos.

En este despliegue de arte rupestre podemos identificar figuras humanas, animales marinos y terrestres, aves, reptiles, figuras celestes y geométricas, espirales y la-

berintos. Además de Las La-bradas, existen otras zonas de petroglifos como el Cerro de la máscara en el municipio del El Fuerte.

En Sinaloa vivieron de etnias anteriores a la llegada de los Nahoas, pero las len-guas pueden considerarse rudimentarias, con pocas palabras, apoyadas principal-mente en señas y movimien-tos corporales.

Los Nahoas marcaron el fuerte contraste con los natu-rales de Sinaloa, pues eran el pueblo cuya religión, cultura y, sobretodo, lenguaje eran más desarrollados.

La razón por la que los Nahoas se detuvieron cente-nares de años en el estado, es porque aquí aprendieron de los Tahues la elaboración de la masa de maíz y la tortilla.

En estas rocas los Nahoas dejaron inscritos mensajes o alegorías que nadie ha desci-frado, legado invaluable para el Estado.

LAS LAbRADAS ExpERIENCE OVER THE CENTURIESSinaloa has beautiful archeological sites with hundreds of stones eroded by nature, but still incredibly decorated with a large amount of petroglyphs.The travel experience in Sinaloa includes a rendezvous with archeology. In the Southern part of the State –in San Ignacio Municipality–, we find the sites of most interest in the Country: Las Labradas are volcanic-origin rocks where our ancestors left a legacy of their vision of the Universe. This is a beautiful archeological site with clear water and soft sand where there are hundreds of blackened and bluish rocks, softly eroded by nature, but still incredibly decorated with a countless number of petroglyphs. In this display of cave art, we can identify shapes of humans, sea and land animals, birds, reptiles, stars, geometric figures, spiral shapes and labyrinths.Aside from Las Labradas, there are other petroglyph zones such as the Mask Hill in El Fuerte Municipality. In Sinaloa, a large number of indigenous groups dwelled the place –before the arrival of the Nahoans–, but their languages can be considered basic, with few words supported mainly by sings and body movements. On the contrary, the Nahoans depicted a strong contrast with the natives of Sinaloa, since they were people with a more elaborated religion, culture and language. The reason why the Nahoans remained hundreds of year sin the State is because here they learned from the Tahues how to make corn masa and tortillas. On these rocks, the Nahoans left engraved messages and allegories which no one has so far deciphered. Thus, they represent an invaluable legacy for the State.

CULTURE A LEGENDARY ARTISTIC TRADITION IN SINALOAAmidst great natural beautiful scenarios, Sinaloa offers a varied repertoire of artistic events displaying the best from theater, paintings, dance, poetry and music; attracting year in and year out visitors to the State from all-over the World. The Cultural Festival in Sinaloa is an example of this. Another key piece of cultural activities in the State is, undoubtedly, the Sinaloa Symphonic Arts Orchestra (OSSLA), which has received important acknowledgments for their extraordinary musical repertoire and its excellent performance, with more than 100 presentations per year. Other artistic jewels are the works by Antonio Lopez Saenz, a painter and sculptor who has captured the flavor of Sinaloa on canvases, clay and bronze. Sin duda, el recorrido imperdible en México es el de la ruta Barran-cas del Cobre al Mar de Cortés, a bordo del Fe-

rrocarril Chihuahua al Pacífico, mejor conocido como Chepe, que lleva a los turistas a descubrir pai-sajes inigualables. A lo lejos, en la estación de Los Mochis, Sinaloa, el silbido del tren anuncia el inicio de gran aventura.

Conforme el Chepe avanza, lagos, ríos, lagunas y verdes va-lles van apareciendo a través de los ventanales que sirven como marcos perfectos de ese espectá-culo natural que parece salido de alguna pintura hecha por algún famoso paisajista.

A bordo, sólo se escucha el ruido de las ruedas del tren sobre los carriles y la expresión de sor-presa de los pasajeros; luego, el silencio inunda el vagón, donde las caras de asombro de los visi-tantes explican la razón de aque-lla mudez.

Con el andar pausado del fe-rrocarril, los pasajeros no pueden

evitar caminar por los pasillos del Chepe hacia el pequeño corredor fuera de cada vagón. Ahí, en el espacio donde apenas cabe una persona, es posible asomar la ca-beza para disfrutar del aire fresco y respirar el olor de las montañas, a hierba recién cortada.

Turistas de todas partes del mundo llegan hasta Sinaloa para encontrarse con “Don Chepe”, este tren turístico que, como si se tratara del viejo amigo, lleva a tu-ristas de todo el mundo a vivir la experiencia excepcional.

El siguiente punto en el trayec-to rumbo a la Sierra Tarahumara es la estación El Fuerte, el Pueblo Mágico de Sinaloa que encierra le-yendas, historia y tradición. Aquí, es posible hacer la pequeña parada o bien, pernoctar en alguna de las antiguas mansiones, ahora con-vertidas en bellos hoteles, y dis-frutar de el paseo por la Plaza de Armas, el Palacio Municipal con el atractivo kiosco de hierro forjado, la Casa de la Cultura y la Iglesia del Sagrado Corazón de Jesús, cons-truida en el Siglo XVIII.

A GATE TO ADVENTUREOn board the Chepe, it is necessary not to blink so as not to lose any detail. On the windows of this famous train, Sinaloa shows a different face for visitors.When in Mexico, you cannot miss the route from Barrancas del Cobre to the Sea of Cortes, on board the Chihuahua-Pacífico Railroad –better known as Chepe. It brings tourists to discover unique landscapes. Far away on Los Mochis, Sinaloa train station, the train whistle marks the beginning of a great adventure. As the Chepe makes its way through lakes, rivers, lagoons and green valleys, we can see through the windows this natural show that seems taken out of a painting made by a famous landscapist. On board, we can hear the sound of the train wheels on the tracks with amazed passengers; then the silence floods the car where the faces of visitors in astonishment explain why everyone is silent. With a slow pace of the train, passengers cannot avoid walking through the Chepe’s isles, towards a small corridor outside of each car. El Puente Negro, de casi kilómetro de longitud, tiene lugar destacado en la histo-

ria de la ciudad, es el sitio ideal para disfru-tar de la puesta de sol y adentrarse más a la gran ciudad. Por otro lado, no cualquiera tiene el privilegio de contar con la isla para divertirse. La Isla de Orabá es el área natu-ral protegida donde es tradición la práctica de actividades deportivas y recreativas.

Veinte años de trayectoria sitúan al Centro Cultural Genaro Estrada como el referente ineludible en el desarrollo artís-tico y cultural de Sinaloa, lo mismo que el Museo de Arte de Sinaloa (MASIN) y el Museo Regional de Sinaloa.

Los platillos hechos a base de pescados y mariscos, forman parte del menú imperdible; pe-ro también hay antojitos, sopas, guisados y postres que son delei-te al paladar.

La oferta culinaria es tan vasta que hay platillos regionales de las tres zonas de Sinaloa: norte, cen-tro y sur.

En el norte por ejemplo a la llegada de los jesuitas, se introdujo a la gastronomía de las etnias, el conjuntar la forma en la utiliza-ción de ingredientes, utensilios y métodos de cocción europeos, con los de los indígenas. Así, ninguna ofrenda del día de muertos estaría

completa sin el tradicional pan de mujer.

En el centro hay las típicas en-chiladas de suelo, el muy conoci-do nacional e internacionalmente chilorio de Mocorito, la manera muy singular de preparar el pa-to, la caguamanta, los famosos y tradicionales platillos como el colache de calabaza, frjoles puer-cos, los quelites en salsa, así como nuestras berenjenas, calidad y di-versidad de tomates.

En el sur no puede faltar el cocktel de camarón, el ceviche mazatleco, pajaritos, pescado za-randeado estilo Sinaloa, asado a la plaza, variedad exclusiva de tama-les: de camarón barbones, tontos, colorados, de elote, de ejotes, coca-
