Sigamos estudiando más vocabulario relacionado con el amor y las distin-tas etapas de una relación.

Cuando quieres decir que has conocido a alguien, utilizas el verbo meet. Lee este ejemplo:

Where did you meet? - ¿Dónde se conocieron?

También puedes conocer a alguien a través de un amigo en una cita a cie-gas: a blind date.

Susan met John at a blind date. - Susan conoció a John en una cita a ciegas.

Para decir que dos personas están saliendo para conocerse, se pueden usar estos verbos:

Lesley is dating Clive. - Lesley está saliendo con Clive.

Lesley is going out with Clive. - Lesley está saliendo con Clive.

Lesley is seeing Clive. - Lesley está saliendo con Clive.

Si queremos saber si alguien está saliendo con una persona, preguntamos:

Si un amigo nos quiere presentar a alguien, podrá decirnos:

COMPARISONS Las comparaciones

Observa estas oraciones:

Clive is taller than Greg. - Clive es más alto que Greg.

Greg is friendlier and more amusing than Clive. - Greg es más amigable y más divertido que Clive.

Utilizamos la forma comparativa de los adjetivos para comparar dos per-sonas, cosas o situaciones de la siguiente manera:

Si el adjetivo es corto, se le agrega -er + than. Mira el ejemplo:

What does … look like? y What’s … like? funcionan como frases hechas, por lo tanto no se incluyen las frases look like o is like en la respuesta. Se contesta directamente con una descripción física o de la personalidad.

What does your sister look like? - ¿Cómo es tu hermana físicamente?

She’s tall and slim.-Es alta y delgada.

What’s your new boss like? - ¿Cómo es tu nuevo jefe?

He’s very intelligent but a little shy. - Es muy inteligente pero un poco tímido.

En los adjetivos cortos que terminan en “y”, se cambia la “y” por “i” y se le agrega -er + than:

Clive is friendlier than Greg - Clive es más amigable que Greg.

English is easier than German. - El inglés es más fácil que el alemán.

Si el adjetivo es más largo, se coloca la palabra more delante del adjetivo y than detrás. El adjetivo no se modifi ca.

Greg is more intelligent than Clive. - Greg es más inteligente que Clive.

Clive is more attractive than Greg. - Clive es más atractivo que Greg.

Puedes también utilizar less, que signifi ca “menos” en lugar de more.

Clive is less intelligent than Greg. - Clive es menos inteligente que Greg.

Greg is less attractive than Clive. - Greg es menos atractivo que Clive.

Por último, hay adjetivos que son irregulares, es decir, cambian completamente en su forma comparativa. Observa, por ejemplo, los adjetivos good y bad.

El comparativo de good es better, que signifi ca “mejor”, y el de bad es worse, que quiere decir “peor”.

Es un sonido corto y suave, que aparece frecuentemente en inglés en sílabas que no están acentuadas. Cualquier letra o combinación de letras puede pronunciarse con este sonido. Love at fi rst sight

Eric and Meryl met eight years ago. It was a very hot Sunday afternoon, and they were

both jogging in the park.
