CD. DE MÉXICO – Edgar Val-dez Villarreal, un narcotrafican-te buscado por autoridades tanto mexicanas como estadounidenses, fue arrestado cerca de la ciudad de México.

El criminal, conocido como “La Barbie”, ha sido señalado como el culpable de la guerra entre cárteles de las drogas que se libra actual-mente en el centro de México.

De acuerdo a las autoridades mexi-canas, equipos de inteligencia estu-vieron trabajando por 14 meses para lograr la detención del maleante.

Junto con La Barbie, quien es originario de Laredo, Texas, fueron detenidas seis personas de su orga-nización. Además, la policía colom-biana informó que había aprehen-dido 11 personas vinculadas con el narcotraficante y con la guerrilla de las FARC.

El operativo que permitió la cap-tura de La Barbie y varios de sus co-laboradores se realizó de forma si-multánea en varios estados del país, involucrando a alrededor de mil 200 efectivos de la Policía Federal.

Las autoridades informaron que La Barbie fue detenido en una casa de seguridad cercana a la zona de La Marquesa, en el estado de México. El arresto se produjo el 30 de agos-to.

Los agentes participantes la ma-yoría vestían de civil, para evitar una reacción de los sicarios que nor-malmente acompañan al capo.

Estos agentes se dividieron en tres cercos: uno formado por aproxima-damente 300 policías federales, que inició el acercamiento a la vivienda del narcotraficante, y los otros dos formaron un cerco que bloqueó las posibles rutas de escape.

La Secretaría de Seguridad Pú-blica informó que al acercarse los agentes a la casa se desató una bala-cera, en la que los sicarios utilizaron granadas de fragmentación, pero su capacidad para repeler las acciones de los oficiales disminuyó consi-derablemente y las autoridades pu-dieron capturar a Valdez Villarreal junto con sus más cercanos colabo-radores.

Cuando fue presentado ante los medios de comunicación, Valdez Villarreal en todo momento mantu-vo una sonrisa, mientras era custo-diado por agentes federales.

El jefe de la División Antidro-gas de la Policía Federal Ramón Pequeño dijo que “información de inteligencia señala que La Barbie Traficaba una tonelada de cocaína mensualmente”.

Las autoridades tanto de México como de Estados Unidos lo conside-ran una persona peligrosa, tanto que el gobierno estadounidense ofreció 2 millones de dólares de recompen-sa a quien diera información que permitiera su captura y el gobierno de México ofreció 30 millones de pesos.

Valdez Villarreal será repatriado a Estados Unidos, ya que es ciuda-dano estadounidense. Sin embargo,

será juzgado por los crímenes que cometió tanto en Estados Unidos como en México.

En México enfrenta siete proce-sos por tráfico de drogas, delincuen-cia organizada, portación de armas de fuego de uso exclusivo del ejér-cito, lavado de dinero, secuestro y homicidio calificado.

En Estados Unidos enfrenta dis-tintas acusaciones en los estados de Louisiana, Texas y Georgia. Entre las acusaciones figura la introduc-ción de varias toneladas de droga a los Estados Unidos.

Valdez Villarreal, de 37 años de edad, inició su carrera criminal en Estados Unidos. A los 19 años de edad fue detenido por la DEA en San Luis, Missouri.

Posteriormente se trasladó al Dis-trito Federal, donde conoció a Artu-ro Beltrán Leyva, alias “El Barbas”, en 1998. Tiempo después se convir-tió en operador para el trasiego de droga y encargado de reclutar a au-toridades.

En 2001 La Barbie recibió la en-comienda de los líderes del Cártel de Sinaloa de pelear la plaza de Nuevo Laredo al Cártel del Golfo, encabe-zado por Osiel Cárdenas Guillén y su brazo armado, Los Zetas.

En 2003 fue designado jefe de se-guridad personal de El Barba y en el 2004 se le otorgó el control de la plaza de Acapulco, Guerrero, debi-do a su lealtad.

En 2007 se realiza una reunión ente los líderes de los cárteles de Sinaloa, Juárez, Golfo y Los Zetas

para pactar el término de agresiones entre ellos.

Posteriormente Los Zetas se alían con Arturo Beltrán Leyva y se da la ruptura entre el Cártel de Sinaloa y los Beltrán Leyva, dando origen a una ola de asesinatos entre ellos.

Al aliarse Los Zetas y Beltrán Leyva, La Barbie es apartado del círculo de influencia de Arturo Bel-trán Leyva, debido a su fuerte riva-lidad con Miguel Treviño Morales, segundo en la estructura general de Los Zetas.

Cuando Arturo Beltrán Leyva muere en enfrentamiento con auto-ridades en diciembre de 2009, los Beltrán Leyva acusan a La Barbie de haberlo traicionado.

El mismo Valdez Villarreal ha di-cho que el día de la muerte de Arturo Beltrán Leyva, recibió una llamada de éste par solicitar su apoyo, que le mandara gente para sacarlo del área, ya que se encontraba rodeado, a lo que La Barbie sugirió que se entre-gara.

Después de la muerte de Arturo Beltrán Leyva, se desencadenó una serie de enfrentamientos y homici-dios con el Cártel del Pacífico Sur, nuevo nombre de la organización Beltrán Leyva bajo el mando de Héctor Beltrán Leyva.

Con esta ruptura La Barbie forma su propia organización, mantenien-do el control de estado de Guerrero, además de una fuerte presencia en Morelos, estado de México, Nuevo León, Tamaulipas, Quintana Roo y el Diestrito Federal.

MEXICO CITY – Edgar Valdez Villarreal, a well-known drug dealer sought by Mexican and US authorities, has been arrested near Mexico City.

The criminal, also known as “the Barbie,” has been described as the main culprit of the current war between drug cartels that’s currently going on in central Mexico.

According to Mexican authorities, intelligence teams worked for 14 months to capture him.

Along with ‘the Barbie’ authorities arrested six people from his inner-circle. Also Colombian au-thorities said they had arrested 11 people with links to Valdez Villarreal and the FARC guerrillas.

The operation that allowed the capture of ‘the Barbie’ and several of his closest collaborators took place simultaneously in several states with the help of about 1,200 Federal Police agents.

Authorities said ‘the Barbie’ was arrested in his home located in the La Marquesa area in the state of Mexico, near Mexico City. The arrest took place Aug. 30.

Most of the agents who participated in the op-eration were dressed in plain clothes to avoid any reaction from gunmen who usually followed Val-dez Villarreal.

These agents were split in three groups, with the first one of about 300 elements going into the house and the other two surrounding the property to seal any escape routes. The group that went to the house was received with gunfire and a gre-nade, but the gunmen’s fire power quickly dimin-ished and authorities were able to arrest Valdez Villarreal.

When he was paraded before camera crews and journalists, Valdez Villarreal was smiling.

Federal Police Anti-Drug Division chief Ra-mon Pequeño said that “intelligence data says that ‘La Barbie’ was trafficking about one ton co-caine per month.”

Authorities in Mexico and the US consider Valdez Villarreal a dangerous person, so much so that the US government offered a $2 million reward for information that lead to his capture, while the Mexican government offered 30 mil-lion pesos.

Valdez Villarreal will be extradited to the United States, because he is an American citizen. However, once in American soil he will be judged for crimes committed in the US and in Mexico.

In Mexico he faces seven judicial processes for drug trafficking, organized crime, use of weapons of exclusive use of the military, money launder-ing, kidnapping and murder.

In the United States he is facing several charg-es in three states: Louisiana, Georgia and Texas. The charges include smuggling tons of drugs to the US.

Valdez Villarreal, 37, started his criminal career in the United States. At 19 he was arrested in St. Louis, Missouri. Later one he moved to Mexico City, where he met Arturo Beltran Leyva, a.k.a. ‘El Barbas,’ in 1998. Sometime later he became a drug smuggling operator and someone who re-cruited authorities to work for them.

In 2001 the Sinaloa Cartel asked ‘La Barbie’ to wrestle control over the Nuevo Laredo Area from the Gulf Cartel, headed by Osiel Cardenas Guil-len and his armed group, Los Zetas.

In 2003 he was put in charge of personal se-

curity for ‘El Barbas’ and in 2004 he was given control over Acapulco, Guerrero, because of his loyalty.

In 2007 the heads of the Sinaloa, Juarez, Golfo and Los Zetas cartels met to broker a cease-fire between them.

After this meeting the Beltran Leyva Cartel and Los Zetas joined forces and broke away from the Sinaloa Cartel, giving way to a series of kill-ings between them.

When Los Zetas and the Beltran Leyva cartel join forces, ‘La Barbie’ is relieved from his job as chief of personal security for ‘El Barbas’, giv-en his rivalry with Miguel Treviño Morales, Los Zetas’ second in command.

When Arturo Beltran Leyva is killed in a shoo-tout with Mexican authorities in December 2009, the Beltran Leyva Cartel accuses ‘La Barbie’ of treason.

Valdez Villarreal has said that the day ‘El Bar-bas’ was killed, the man himself called him to re-quest his support and to ask him to send people over to get him away from the area, but ‘La Bar-bie” replied that it was better for him to surren-der.

After Arturo Beltran Leyva’s death, a wave of killings and shootouts with the Pacifico Sur Cartel ensued. The Pacifico Sur Cartel is the new name for the Beltran Leyva organization, headed by Hector Beltran Leyva.

After breaking away from the cartel, ‘la Bar-bie’ formed his own organization, keeping con-trol of the state of Guerrero, and also having a strong presence in the states of Morelos Mexico State, Nuevo Leon, Tamaulipas, Quintana Roo and Mexico city.

Matan a hombre en tiroteo con policía en Plano

PLANO – Un automovilista que se involucró en un choque cerca de Plano fue abatido a tiros por la policía la noche del 27 de agosto, después de que aparentemente disparó en contra de los oficiales, se apoderó de un automóvil del alguacil y lo manejó, chocándolo, mientras huía del primer accidente.

El incidente empezó alrededor de las 8:38 p.m. cerca de la intersección de los caminos Faxon y Eldamain en un área no incorporada del Condado de Kendall cerca de Plano.

La policía dijo que Bjorn S. Roland, de 40 años de edad, huyó de la escena de un choque cerca de la Ruta 34 y Eldamain Road, y aparentemente disparó una pistola en contra de un oficial del alguacil que estaba buscándolo cerca de la YMCA de Plano.

Cuando el oficial salió de su vehículo para protegerse de los disparos, Roland aparentemente entró a la patrulla, que había sido dejada sin seguro y con el motor encendido, y se dirigió en dirección norte a Eldamain Road, donde aparentemente golpeó una patrulla de policía de Plano, que respondía a la escena del choque original.

Patient stabbed at Aurora hospital in stable condition

AURORA – Aurora Police detectives are investigating the stabbing of a 78 year old North Aurora woman which took place at the Provena-Mercy Hospital in the 1300 Block of N. Highland Avenue on the city’s west side.

The victim was a patient at the hospital.Aurora Police responded to the Provena-Mercy Hospital at approximately 6:25 p.m. Aug.

31 for a call of a disturbance with a subject stabbing a patient in room 524. Officers arriving on scene found security personnel as well as family of the offender in the

process of subduing the assailant, who has been identified as Darrell Franklin, 29, of the 700 block of N. Lake Street.

At press time the victim was in stable, but guarded condition.According to police, the preliminary investigation established that the offender was visit-

ing a family member who was a patient at the hospital. This family member shared a room with the victim of the attack.

A motive for the attack is uncertain at this time. Aurora Police Detectives along with the Kane County States Attorney’s Office have

charged Franklin with one count of Aggravated Battery to a Senior Citizen(Class 2 felony) and one count of Aggravated Battery(Class 3 felony).

Police are asking anyone with additional information to call Detectives at (630)256-5500.

Apuñalan a paciente en cuarto de hospital

AURORA – Detectives del Departamento de Policía de Aurora están investigando el apu-ñalamiento de una mujer de 78 años de edad, el cual sucedió en el hospital Provena Mercy Hospital en el oeste de la ciudad.

La víctima, residente de North Aurora, era una paciente en el hospital.La policía respondió a un reporte de un sujeto que apuñalaba a una paciente en el nosocomio.

El incidente sucedió alrededor de las 6:25 p.m. del 31 de agosto.Cuando los oficiales llegaron se encontraron con que familiares del atacante y personal de

seguridad del hospital estaban tratando de detener al sospechoso. El atacante fue identificado como Darrell Franklin, de 39 años de edad y residente de la cua-

dra 700 de North Lake Street en Aurora. Al cierre de esta edición la víctima estaba en condición estable pero resguardada.De acuerdo a la policía, loa investigación preliminar establece que el atacante estaba de visita

con un familiar que compartía el cuarto con la víctima.No se ha determinado el motivo del ataque.Tanto la policía de Aurora como el fiscal del Condado de Kane han acusado a Franklin de un

cargo de agresion agravada contra una persona mayor de 65 años de edad, una felonía clase 2, y de un cargo de agresión agravada, una felonía clase 3.

La policía pide a quien tenga información adicional que llame a los detectives al (630) 256-5500.

Man killed in shootout with police in Plano

PLANO – A driver who got involved in a hit and run incident near Plano was killed by police late Aug. 27, after he apparently fired against officers, got in a sheriff’s department squad car, drove it away and crashed it while trying to get away from the first accident.

The incident started at about 8:38 p.m. near the intersection of Faxon and Eldaman in an unincorporated Kendall County area near Plano.

Police said Bjorn s. Roland, 40, was involved in a hit-and-run incident near Route 34 and Eldamain Road, and apparently fired his weapon against a sheriff officer who was looking for him near the YWCA in Plano.

When the officer exited his vehicle to take cover from the fire, Roland allegedly got in the squad car, which was left unlocked and running, and drove north to Eldamain Road, where he allegedly hit a Plano police squad which was responding to the first crash.

Police said Roland, who was still driving the sheriff’s car, left the second crash scene and eventually left the vehicle on Faxton Road, west of Eldamain, where he apparently confron-ted and threatened officials.

Police shot Roland, who was a resident of the 200 block of Keller Street in Plano, and he was taken to a local hospital, where he died.

Several officers suffered minor injuries during the incident, which is under the investiga-tion by the Illinois State Police.

Elgin police warn of phone scam

ELGIN – Elgin police are warning residents to be alert against a telephone “phishing” scam.

Last weekend Elgin police received over 30 complaints about the scam.The telephone call supposedly comes from the KCT Credit Union, Frist Community Bank

or other financial institution and asks for personal banking information.The automated calls claim there is a problem with the account holder’s ATM card and ask

to press “1” to be transferred to the security department.Police officers said the best thing residents can do is to hang up when they receive these

calls.“People should never give out personal banking information over the phone to anyone,”

Elgin Crime Prevention Specialist Cherie Aschenbrenner said. “If there are any questions for their bank, residents should look up the number themselves and dial the bank directly. Never call a number someone asks them over the phone to call.”

Policía de Elgin advierte sobre fraudes por teléfono

ELGIN – La policía de Elgin ha lanzado una alerta a residentes, para que estén prevenidos contra un intento de fraude por teléfono.

El pasado fin de semana más de 30 personas reportaron haber recibido llamadas sospechosas a la policía.

La llamada proviene aparentemente de KCT Credit Union, First Community Bank u otra institución financiera y pide información bancaria personal.

Las llamadas automatizadas dicen que hay un problema con la tarjeta del cajero automático del usuario y le piden que presione el “1” para que lo conecten con una persona del departa-mento de seguridad.

La policía dijo que los residentes simplemente deben colgar el teléfono al recibir este tipo de llamadas.

“La gente nunca debe dar información bancaria personal por teléfono a nadie”, dijo Cheire Schenbrenner, especialista en prevención del crimen de Elgin. “Si tienen preguntas para su banco, las personas deben buscar el número y marcarlo directamente. Nunca deben llamar a un número que alguien les dé por teléfono”.

AURORA – La familia Montenegro se en-cuentra trabajando con renovados bríos, debido a la exitosa apertura de la taquería El Taco Mó-vil #2, realizada el 24 de agosto.

Para esta gran ocasión contaron con la pre-sencia de los señores Carmelo y Rosa María Montenegro, fundadores del original Taco Mó-vil.

La celebración también se extiende al éxito que ha tenido el tercer negocio de la familia, administrado por la señora Maribel de Monte-negro.

“Un buen sabor, un buen servicio y mucha limpieza”, es lo que espera Gabriel Montene-gro que experimenten sus clientes al visitar las nuevas instalaciones del Taco Móvil Número 2, 733 Aurora Avenue.

La experiencia de la familia Montenegro en la preparación de tacos, el platillo mexicano por excelencia, es amplia, ya que antes de abrir su negocio en Aurora, ellos habían sido propieta-rios de una carnicería y una taquería en la Ciu-dad de México.

Las taquerías El Taco Móvil se distinguen por preparar tacos auténticos de México y son un proyecto de familia.

“El nuestro es un negocio familiar”, dijo Ga-briel. “Todo esto es gracias a las recetas y ense-ñanzas de mis padres”.

Él reconoció que los empleados que han pa-sado por ambos negocios han dejado su huella y han sido importantes en el desarrollo del Taco Móvil, ya que siempre aportan algo.

Gabriel hizo mención especial de Gerardo Javier, el manager de la taquería Número 2, a quien describió como alguien que ha estado apoyando a la familia Montenegro por mucho tiempo, en las buenas y en las malas.

La primera de las taquerías, El Taco Móvil Número 1, era un pequeño camión donde ven-dían tacos y otros antojitos mexicanos. Este puesto móvil de tacos estaba ubicado en la esquina de las calles Union y Claim. En este camión pusieron todo su esfuerzo Gabriel, sus padres y su esposa Maribel.

Actualmente en el Taco Móvil Número 2, cuenta con la colaboración de su hija Gabriela.

Corría el año 2000 y la familia Montenegro emprendía una nueva aventura. Por tres años y medio estuvieron en la esquina de las calles Union y Claim, hasta que la ciudad de Aurora dijo que tenían que estar en un local establecido. Es entonces cuando deciden instalarse en el Fox-Valley Flea Market, 1500 E. New York. St.

El cambio de ubicación de su negocio afectó en un principio al Taco Móvil, pero una vez que los clientes habituales los ubicaron, las cosas volvieron a la normalidad.

“En un principio fue un poco lento en el flea market”, dijo Gabriel. “Pero luego que nos ubi-caron todo volvió a ser igual”.

Pero como en el flea market solo trabajan de viernes a domingo, los clientes comenzaron a preguntarles por qué no abrían otro lugar donde pudieran saborear sus platillos durante la sema-na.

Así surgió la idea del Taco Móvil Número 2, el cual abrió sus puertas en el año 2006 en la ca-lle River en el centro de la ciudad. Ahí duraron hasta 2009, cuando por causas de fuerza mayor tuvieron que cerrar el local.

Sin embargo, la idea de tener un lugar abierto durante toda la semana siguió en pie y ahora se ha vuelto realidad en un nuevo local.

“Quiero dar las gracias a nuestros clientes fieles, por preferir a Taco Móvil desde que em-pezamos”, dijo Gabriel. Él comentó que en unas cuantas semanas estarán realizando la apertura oficial del nuevo restaurante.

AURORA – The Montenegro family is working with renewed energy after the suc-cessful opening of their new business, Taco Movil #2, held Aug. 24.

The founders of the original Taco Movil, Carmelo and Rosa Maria Montenegro, were present for this joyous occasion.

The success is also reflected in the third family business, administered by Maribel de Montenegro.

“Great flavor, excellent service and a clean place,” that’s what Gabriel Montene-gro expects his clients to get when they visit his new restaurant. Taco Movil #2, located at 733 Aurora Avenue.

The Montenegros have ample experience preparing tacos, the best known Mexican dish. Before starting their taqueria in Au-rora, they owned a butcher shop and a ta-queria in Mexico City.

El Taco Movil sets itself apart because they prepare the authentic tacos Mexican –style and they are a family business.

“Ours is a family business,” Gabriel said. “All this is thanks to my parents’ recipes and example.”

He acknowledged that all employees who have worked for both Taco Movil locations have made an impact and have been key el-ements in the success of Taco Movil.

Gabriel said Gerardo Javier, the manager at the newly opened restaurant, is someone who has been supporting this family en-terprise through thick and thin for several years.

The first taqueria, El Taco Movil 1, was a

small trailer where they sold tacos and other Mexican fast food. This mobile restaurant was located at the corner of Union and Claim. This business was launched with the efforts of Gabriel, his parents Carmelo and Rosa Maria Montenegro, and his wife Maribel.

Now at El Taco Movil 2 he has recruited the help of his daughter, Gabriela.

It was the year 2000 and the Montenegro family decided to start a new venture. For three and a half years they worked out of their mobile truck at the corner of Union and Claim, until the city told them they couldn’t do it anymore and had to look for a perma-nent location. That’s when they decided to move to the Fox Valley Flea Market, 1500 E. New York St.

The change in location affected El Taco Movil at first, but once their loyal custom-ers found out where they were things went back to normal.

“At first it was a little bit slow at the Flea Market,” Gabriel Said. “But the people lo-cated us and things were back to normal.”

But at the flea market they are only open Friday through Sunday. Clients started sug-gesting them to open a new location where they could enjoy their favorite dishes dur-ing the week.

That’s how El Taco Movil 2 came to be. The second location opened its doors in 2006 on River Street in downtown Au-rora. The restaurant was open from 2006 to 2009, but had to close It due to unforeseen circumstances.

However, the idea of having a second lo-cation open all week was still alive and now has become a reality.

“I want to thank our loyal customers, who have preferred El Taco Movil since we started,” Gabriel said. He also mentioned the new location will host a formal Grand Opening in the next few weeks.

AURORA – La Chicanita Bakery administration and personnel held a successful Cake Expo Aug. 29.

The event, held for third consecutive year, took place in the bakery’s parking lot, at the corner of Union and E. New York Streets, and introduced the new line of cakes, exclusive of the bakery.

The cake decoration was done by bakery decorators, with the help of Arturo Chavez, from La Chicanita Bakery in West Chicago.

At the expo bakery employees distributed cake samples and registered future quinceañeras to participate in the raffle of a cake for their big celebration.

The winner of the first cake raffled off by the bakery at-tended the event and thanked La Chicanita administration for helping her have a wonderful cake for her big celebra-tion. She won in 2008.

Besides cake samples the expo featured Dora, Minnie and Mickey Mouse and inflatable games for children. Late in the afternoon the group Lazer de Tierra Caliente put everybody to dance until 9 p.m.

All the activities took place in a safe environment, as the administration took special care in hiring security person-nel to make sure people could have an afternoon of enter-tainment in a safe place.

The idea to have a Cake Expo came from the current head of administration, Ricardo Parra, who wanted the community to know what the bakery has to offer for some-one’s special occasion.

This is the last cake expo organized by Ricardo Parra and employees said it has been the best to date.

AURORA – La administración y personal de La Chicanita Bakery llevaron a cabo con gran éxito su tercera Expo de Pasteles el 29 de agosto.

El evento, realizado en el estacionamiento de la pas-telería ubicada en la esquina de las calles Union y E. New York Street, contó con una muestra de la nueva línea de pasteles para toda ocasión, exclusiva de esta panadería.

La decoración de los pasteles en la exhibición corrió a cargo de los pasteleros de La Chicanita, con el apoyo del pastelero Arturo Chávez, de La Chicanita de West Chicago.

Durante la exhibición empleados de la panadería es-tuvieron entregando muestras de los distintos pasteles que ofrecen a la concurrencia, además de registrar jo-vencitas próximas a cumplir quince años, para partici-par en la rifa de un pastel para su gran celebración.

Al evento asistió la jovencita ganadora del primer pastel, rifado en el año 2008, quien agradeció a la ad-ministración de La Chicanita Bakery por haber hecho su sueño realidad de tener un bonito pastel en su ce-lebración.

Además de muestras de pasteles, la exhibición con-tó con la presencia de Dora, Mimí y Mickey Mouse y juegos inflables para los niños. Ya entrada la tarde hizo acto de presencia el conjunto Lazer de Tierra Ca-

liente, que amenizó el baile hasta las 9 de la noche.Todas las actividades se llevaron a cabo dentro de un

gran ambiente de seguridad, ya que la administración se preocupó por contar con elementos de seguridad de primer nivel para que los asistentes pudieran disfrutar de una tarde sana de entretenimiento.

Las idea de las expos de pasteles fue del actual ad-ministrador de La Chicanita, Ricardo Parra, para mos-trar a la comunidad lo que la panadería puede ofrecer para sus eventos especiales.

Esta es la última exhibición que se realiza bajo el mando de Ricardo, y los empleados dijeron que ha sido la mejor hasta el día de hoy.

MEXICO CITY – Mexican authorities con-firmed the existence of a second survivor of the massacre where 72 immigrants from Central and South America were killed.

The official announcement came Sept. 1.The existence of a second survivor had been

kept under wraps because this person has been providing relevant information to investigators.

Ecuador President Rafael Correa revealed the existence of a second survivor Aug. 31, when he said to Ecuadorean media that, besides the man from Ecuador that had been identified as the sole survivor of the massacre, there was a second sur-vivor, of Honduran origin, who was under the protection of the Mexican government.

Honduran authorities denounced Correa’s comments and call them “irresponsible.”

“We are saddened by the irresponsibility of mak-ing this news public, particularly because a high-ranking dignitary should know when he can speak, when he must be cautious and when his words put other people’s lives at risk,” said Mario Canahuati, Honduran Minister of Foreign Affairs.

He said his government knew of the existence of a second survivor from the beginning, but this information was kept secret to protect that per-son’s life.

“We had that information from the beginning. We have been doing everything we can to pro-tect him; we had been in permanent contact with him.

“Unfortunately we had to hear the news from a president, something that surprised us” Cana-huati said.

Once Correa revealed the information, Mexi-can authorities didn’t have another option but to confirm the news.

Representatives from the Foreign Affairs Ministry and the Attorney General’s Office said in a joint statement that “the witness has provid-ed relevant information for the identification of the undocumented who were executed, and has already been in contact with authorities of his country.”

Officials didn’t give any details about how the man escaped without injury.

Julian Ventura, undersecretary for North America for the Foreign Affairs Ministry, said Mexico is taking all necessary measures to guar-antee the safety of the survivor, whose immigra-tion status hasn’t been disclosed. Authorities said in cases like this Mexican authorities issue a humanitarian visa so the witness can remain in Mexico while the investigations continue.

“From the beginning the Mexican govern-ment has provided protection to the man from Honduras, with the knowledge and support of the authorities in his native country, offering him alternatives to his immigration status and being cautious to guarantee his safety,” Mexican au-thorities said in the joint statement.

Ventura said none of the countries where the victims were from had presented diplomatic complaints against Mexico, and rejected ver-sions from Honduran newspapers that stated that authorities from that country were considering a lawsuit against Mexico to make the country pay for the deaths of their fellow countrymen.

The only known survivor of the massacre was an 18 year-old man from Ecuador who suffered

bullet wounds to the neck and chest.The man traveled to Ecuador Aug. 29 and upon

his arrival was immediately placed in a witness protection program along with his family.

The undersecretary for the Interior Ministry,

Edwin Jarrin, said this was done “because of the fear that ‘coyotes’ (people who traffic with ille-gal immigrants) could affect his safety and integ-rity. Not just his but his family’s as well. Even in his country.”

Revelan existencia de sobreviviente de masacre

CIUDAD DE MÉXICO – Las autoridades mexicanas confirmaron la existencia de un segundo sobre-viviente de la masacre en donde 72 inmigrantes de Centro y Sudamérica fueron asesinados.

El anuncio oficial se hizo el prime-ro de septiembre.

La existencia del segundo sobre-viviente había sido mantenida en secreto debido a que esta persona ha estado proporcionando información relevante a los investigadores.

El presidente de Ecuador, Rafael Correa, reveló la existencia de un se-

gundo sobreviviente el 31 de agosto cuando dijo a los medios de comuni-cación ecuatorianos que además del hombre de Ecuador que había sido identificado como el único sobre-viviente de la masacre había un se-gundo sobreviviente de origen hon-dureño, quien se encontraba bajo la protección del gobierno mexicano.

Las autoridades hondureñas de-nunciaron los comentarios de Corre y los llamaron “irresponsables”.

“Estamos entristecidos por la irresponsabilidad de hacer pública esta noticia, sobre todo porque un alto dignatario debería saber cuando hablar, cuando debe ser cauteloso y

cuando sus palabras ponen en ries-go las vidas de otras personas”, dijo Mario Canahuati, Ministro de Rela-ciones Exteriores de Honduras.

Él dijo que su gobierno sabía de la existencia de un segundo sobre-viviente desde un principio, pero se mantuvo en secreto esta información para proteger la vida de esa persona.

“Teníamos esa información desde el principio. Hemos estado haciendo todo lo que podemos para protegerlo, hemos estado en contacto permanen-te con él”.

“Lamentablemente tuvimos que escuchar la noticia por parte de un presidente, algo que nos sorprendió”, dijo Canahuati.

Una vez que Correa reveló la in-formación las autoridades mexicanas no tuvieron otra opción que confir-mar la noticia.

Representantes de la Secretaría de Relaciones Exteriores y la Oficina de la Procuraduría General dijeron en un comunicado conjunto que “el tes-tigo ha proporcionado información relevante para la identificación de los indocumentados que fueron ejecuta-dos y ya ha estado en contacto con las autoridades de su país”.

Los funcionarios no proporciona-ron ningún detalle acerca de como fue que el hombre escapó sin lesiones.

Julián Ventura, subsecretario de la Secretaría de Relaciones Exteriores para Norteamérica, dijo que México está tomando todas las medidas ne-cesarias para garantizar la seguridad del sobreviviente cuyo estatus migra-torio no ha sido divulgado. Las auto-

ridades dijeron que en casos como este, las autoridades mexicanas emi-ten una visa humanitaria para que el testigo pueda permanecer en México mientras continúan la investigación.

“Desde el principio el gobierno mexicano ha proporcionado protec-ción para el hombre de Honduras con el conocimiento y apoyo de las autoridades en su país de origen, ofreciéndole alternativas a su estatus migratorio y siendo cauteloso para garantizar su seguridad”, dijeron las autoridades mexicanas en el comuni-cado conjunto.

Ventura dijo que ninguno de los países de donde eran las víctimas han presentado quejas diplomáticas contra México y rechazaron versio-nes de la prensa hondureña que indi-caron que las autoridades de ese país estaban considerando una demanda en contra de México para hacer que el país pague por las muertes de sus compatriotas.

El único sobreviviente conocido de la masacre era un hombre de 18 años de Ecuador, quien sufrió heri-das de bala en el cuello y el pecho.

El hombre viajo a Ecuador el 29 de agosto y a su llegada fue puesto inme-diatamente en un programa de protec-ción a testigos junto con su familia.

El subsecretario del Ministerio del Interior, Edwin Jarrín, dijo que esto se hizo “debido al temor de que los ‘coyotes’ (personas que trafican con inmigrantes ilegales) pudieran afec-tar su seguridad e integridad. No so-lamente la suya sino también la de su familia. Aún en su país”.

MEXICO CITY – The Dos Santos-Mexican National Team saga con-tinues, with the player not answering calls to participate with the team.

The Director of National Teams for the Mexican Soccer Federation, Nestor de la Torre, said that Jonathan Dos Santos has refused to answer calls to participate with the team in upcoming friendly matches.

De la Torre said that ‘Jona’ received authorization to skip the match between El Tri and Spain Aug. 11 so he could play an important match with his club, Barcelona.

However, he was called to participate in a friendly match scheduled for Sept. 4 against Ecuador in Guadalajara, and against Colombia Sept. 7 in Monterrey, and he didn’t answered the phone, sending a message through his agent saying that “I want to concentrate (my efforts) with Barcelona.”

While Justino Compean, President of the Mexican Soccer Federation, said there are better players than Jonathan, Nestor said Jona is “a great player with a brilliant future, but the Mexican Team deserves respect.”

De la Torre said they will announce the team that will play against El Tri in Ciudad Juarez on Sept. 12.

Franco and Galindo won’t play this season, Europe didn’t work out for them

Ambos jugadores tenían grandes esperanzas de firmar con equipos europeos para la próxima temporada.

Sin embargo, las oportunidades de Franco de firmar con el Wigan se esfumaron después de que el jugador no llenó las expectativas el equipo, debido a su mala condición física.

Antes de la Copa Mundial de Sudáfrica, “Guille” es-taba jugando con el West Ham United en la Liga Pre-miere, pero no formó parte del equipo de esta temporada y fue dejado libre.

Él quería quedarse en Inglaterra, pero ahora tendrá

que reconsiderar la opción de jugar en la MLS.Mientras tanto, Aarón Galindo de las Chivas no en-

Both players had high expecta-tions of signing with European teams for the upcoming season.

However, Franco’s chances of signing with Wigan disappeared af-ter the player didn’t fulfill the team’s expectations due to his less-than-op-timal physical condition.

Before the South Africa World Cup “Guille” was playing with West Ham United in the Premier League, but he wasn’t part of the lineup for this season and was let go.

He wanted to remain in England, but now will have to reconsider his future and look at the MLS.

Meanwhile, Chivas player Aaron Galindo couldn’t find a spot in a Eu-ropean team and for the second time in his career may have to take some time off.

Galindo wasn’t included in Chi-vas roster but he still will get paid

because he is under contract with the team. The first time he was off the field during a tournament was in 2005, when he was suspended for doping after the Confederations Cup.

After his suspension Galindo played with second division Hercu-les in Spain, then moved on to the Grasshopper in Switzerland and the Eintracht Frankfurt in Germany, re-turning to Mexico in 2009.

The answer for both players would be to accept an offer from a team in the MLS league in the Un-tied States, if they don’t want to be on the sidelines for the next six months.

El director de Selecciones Nacionales, Néstor de la Torre, dijo que Jo-nathan Dos Santos se ha negado a contestar llamadas para pedirle que participe en los próximos partidos amistosos de la selección.

De la Torre dijo que ‘Jona’ recibió permiso para no participar en el juego contra España el 11 de agosto, para que pudiera estar en un juego importante con el Barcelona.

CD. DE MÉXICO – Después de que cir-cularan fuertes rumores de que al divorciarse Ana Bárbara tendría que mantener a su ex es-poso, ahora ambos han hecho aclaraciones.

José María Fernández ‘Pirru’ aclaró me-diante su cuenta Twitter que no había solici-tado una pensión a Ana Bárbara para firmar el divorcio.

Los rumores indicaban que él iba a solicitar manutención ya que durante los cinco años que duró su matrimonio él no había trabaja-do.

“¿Cómo puede haber gente tan estúpida que pueda creer que yo le pedí pensión a Ana? Se-

ría indigno y de poco hombre que alguien lo pruebe!!!”, escribió.

También dijo que él siempre había trabaja-do.

“Toda mi vida he trabajado, soy empresario y constructor, pésele a quien le pese! Y siem-pre he corrido con los gatos de mi familia… Ana Bárbara no fue la excepción”.

Mientras tanto, la cantante grupera median-te un comunicado de prensa dijo que todo lo que se ha ventilado en los medios de comuni-cación es falso.

Ella describió a su ex pareja como “un hom-bre cabal, íntegro, responsable, preocupado y ocupado de sus responsabilidades como hom-bre de la casa”.

MEXICO CITY After the rumor mill said Ana Barbara had to pay alimony to her soon-to-be ex-husband, both had decided to set things straight.

Jose Maria Fernandez ‘Pirru’ said through his Twitter account that he hadn’t requested alimony in order to sign the divorce papers.

Rumors said he was asking for alimony af-ter not working for the five years he was ma-rried to grupero singer Ana Barbara.

“People have to be stupid to believe I asked

Ana for alimony. That would be unworthy and low. Someone has to prove it,” he twitted.

He also said he has always worked.“I have worked all my life, I am a busi-

nessman and an entrepreneur, that’s the truth! And I have always paid for my family’s ex-penses… Ana Barbara was not an exception.”

Meanwhile, Ana Barbara issued a press re-lease stating that all the rumors were false.

She described her ex as “a a real man, ho-nest, responsible, concerned and aware of his responsibilities as head of household.”

La actriz, quien tenía cinco meses de embarazo, sufrió un aborto espontáneo el 27 de agosto, cuando se encontraba en plenos preparativos para su boda con el empresario Lorenzo Lazo Margaín.

En un comunicado de prensa emitido por la ac-triz se dice que ella está bien de salud y en recupe-

ración.Mientras tanto, la revista Quién informó en su

portal de Internet que la pareja ha decidido pos-poner su boda, programada originalmente para el primer fin de semana de septiembre.

La publicación aclara que la pareja se unirá en matrimonio el 24 de septiembre, aunque no dio más detalles sobre el evento.

La pareja se conoció en 2004, pero fue hasta el 2009 cuando iniciaron su relación sentimental.

The actress, who was five months along, lost the baby Aug. 27, when she was invol-ved in the last-minute details of her upcoming wedding to businessman Lorenzo Lazo Mar-gaín.

In a press release the actress said she was

well and recuperating from the situation.Meanwhile, Quien magazine informed on-

line that the couple had decided to postpone the wedding, scheduled for the first week of September.

Instead, the publication states that the wedding will take place Sept. 24, but no more details were revealed.

The couple met in 2004 but they started da-ting last year.
