MEXICO – Autoridades federales detu-vieron en una operación sin precedente a 28funcionarios estatales y municipales, inclui-dos 10 alcaldes y un juez, por presuntamentedar protección a un cartel de las drogas en elestado occidental de Michoacán. La deten-ción se realizó el 26 de mayo.

El vocero de la Procuraduría General dela República (PGR), Ricardo Nájera, in-formó en rueda de prensa que después deuna investigación de seis meses se detectóque los detenidos habrían proporcionado in-formación y protección táctica y técnica a LaFamilia, uno de los seis carteles menciona-dos por las autoridades federales.

Michoacán, a más de 200 kilómetros aloeste de la capital del país, ha sido uno delos estados más afectados por el narcotráficoen México.

Entre los detenidos se encuentra el coor-dinador de asesores del procurador estatal,una asesora del gobernador y ex titular deseguridad pública e incluso un juez local yex subprocurador de justicia.

El gobernador de Michoacán, LeonelGodoy, dijo que las fuerzas federales tam-bién habían buscado al procurador generalde justicia del estado pero no habían podidolocalizarlo durante el operativo del 26 demayo. Los oficiales en la Procuraduría dije-ron no tener información sobre este comen-tario.

Godoy criticó al gobierno federal por noinformarle sobre los arrestos, pero prometió

cooperar con la investigación. Dijo que se ledebería pedir la renuncia a cualquier oficialgubernamental bajo investigación.

Las detenciones se realizaron en una ac-ción simultánea en distintos puntos de Mi-choacán.

Los 10 alcaldes detenidos proceden demunicipalidades que en los últimos años hantenido una mayor presencia del narcotráfico.

De los presidentes municipales detenidos,dos llegaron al poder por el partido oficia-lista Acción Nacional (PAN), seis por el ex

gobernante Revolucionario Institucional(PRI) y dos del izquierdista de la RevoluciónDemocrática (PRD) ).

Nájera aseguró que en este momento nose puede hablar de narcopolítica, como sedefine coloquialmente en el país a las posi-bles relaciones entre narcotraficantes y po-líticos.

“Aquí se manejan conductas personales,no institucionales, mucho menos partidarias,y yo no puedo manejar esto como parte deuna narcopolítica”, dijo.

Añadió que ya corresponderá a un fiscalfederal determinar “si esas conductas las re-alizaron aprovechando el cargo o dejando deaprovechar el cargo”.

La operación inició la mañana del 26 demayo, cuando fiscales federales llegaron adomicilios, oficinas y presidencias munici-pales con órdenes de localización y presen-tación.

La operación ocurrió el mismo día en quela Policía Federal anunció la captura en Mi-choacán de un ex policía estatal, consideradoun operador del cartel de La Familia, desdedonde se hacía cargo del tráfico de drogas ysecuestros en al menos cinco municipalida-des del Estado de México, vecino a la capi-tal.

Junto al ex policía estatal, identificadocomo Javier Ortiz “El Arqui”, fueron captu-rados otras 10 personas. Cuatro de las deten-ciones ocurrieron en Michoacán y el restoen el Estado de México.

Hasta el momento no se ha informado deuna posible conexión entre los presuntosmiembros de La Familia capturados y losfuncionarios estatales y municipales.

MEXICO CITY – Federal forces detained 10 may-ors and 18 other officials May 26 for allegedly pro-tecting one of Mexico’s most violent drug cartels inan unprecedented anti-corruption sweep in the Pacificcoast state of Michoacan.

Soldiers and federal agents fanned out across Pres-ident Felipe Calderon’s native state to carry out theoperation, which an expert called a blow to politi-cians tied to traffickers in Michoacan.

The officials, who had been under investigation forsix months, allegedly leaked sensitive informationand provided protection to La Familia cartel, said Ri-cardo Najera, a spokesman for the federal AttorneyGeneral’s Office. He declined to give more details toavoid compromising the case.

More than 200 federal agents burst into the stateattorney general’s office in Morelia to detain three ofthe officials.

Most of the mayors were from towns in a moun-tainous region where there have been numerous be-headings and federal agents recently found 22methamphetamine laboratories. The mayors camefrom different parties, including Calderon’s own con-servative National Action Party.

High-ranking state police officials and two munic-ipal police chiefs were among those detained, includ-

ing state police academy director Mario Bautista andthe state governor’s adviser, Citlalli Fernandez, whoalso is the former public safety secretary, the AttorneyGeneral’s Office said.

Michoacan Gov. Leonel Godoy said the federalforces had also sought the state attorney general forquestioning but could not locate him during Tues-day’s operation. Officials at the federal Attorney Gen-eral’s Office said they had no information about thatclaim.

Godoy criticized the federal government for not in-forming him about the arrests, but promised to coop-erate with the investigation. He said any stategovernment official under investigation would beasked to resign.

Meanwhile, the federal Public Safety Departmentparaded before the news media 11 suspected La Fa-milia members who were detained late May 25andearly May in the states of Michoacan and Mexico,among them a former Michoacan state police officer.

Najera declined to say whether those arrests wererelated to the Michoacan operation.

The sweep drives home Mexico’s struggle to weedout corruption in its drug fight. Many local and fed-eral police have been arrested on charges of protect-ing drug cartels since Calderon launched hisnationwide crackdown on organized crime in 2006.More than 10,750 people have died in drug violencesince the crackdown started.

Police looking for suspectin supermarket incident

Aurora Police have released surveillance photos of a woman wantedfor shoving a 61 year old grocery store employee which caused seriousinjuries to the man.

Detectives say that on May 1 at about 6:25 p.m., thewoman tried to make off with about $75 worth of liquor sheallegedly stole from the Dominick’s grocery store at 3025East New York Street on the city’s far east side.

When confronted by the man, who worked as a loss pre-vention specialist, she allegedly shoved him, causing him tolose his balance and fall on his shoulder. The woman thenentered her vehicle and took off westbound through the park-ing lot.

The suspect is a female black, 5’10” 165 pounds, withlong, braided, black hair. She was driving an SUV that wasmaroon on the top and tan on the bottom that appears asthough it may be a Mitsubishi with “H 2" as possibly thefirst two characters on the license plates.

Los detectives informaron que el 1 de mayo lamujer supuestamente trató de salir de la tienda Do-minick’s en la calle New York sin pagar licor convalor de aproximadamente 75 dólares. El incidentesucedió alrededor de las 6:25 p.m.

Miles de adolescentes en Illinois pronto estarán de vacaciones y bus-cando trabajo.

Con esto en mente, el Departamento de Trabajo de Illinois (IDOL, porsus siglas en inglés) está recordando a los estudiantes y posibles em-pleadores que hay leyes que protegen los derechos de los niños en el tra-bajo.

La Ley de Trabajo Infantil de Illinois, que regula el trabajo de personasmenores de 16 años, es administrada por IDOL. Esta ley requiere quelos jóvenes de 14 y 15 años de edad obtengan certificados de empleo desus escuelas o de las oficinas administrativas de la escuela. Este certifi-cado confirma que el joven tiene la edad suficiente para trabajar, tienelas aptitudes físicas para el trabajo y que éste no interfiere con la edu-cación del joven.

La ley prohibe que los jóvenes trabajen en ocupaciones peligrosas,limita el horario de trabajo y requiere que los menores que trabajen cincoo más horas consecutivas reciban un periodo de descanso de 30 minutos.

CHICAGO –Thousands of Illinois teenagers will soon be on sum-mer break and heading out to find jobs, and the

Illinois Department of Labor (IDOL) is reminding students andemployers about Illinois’ law that provides protections for childrenin the workplace.

IDOL enforces the Illinois Child Labor Law, which regulates theemployment of workers who are younger than 16 years old. The lawrequires that minors, ages 14 and 15, obtain employment certificatesfrom their local high school or school administration office. Thecertificate confirms that a minor is old

enough to work, is physically capable to perform the job, and thatthe job will not interfere with the minor’s education. The law pro-hibits work in hazardous occupations, limits working hours and

requires that minors working five or more continuous hours receivea 30-minute meal period.

The Illinois Child Labor Law allows children ages 14 and 15 towork during summer break (June 1st through Labor Day):

• Between 7 am and 9 pm• Up to 48 hours a week, but not more than six consecutive daysWork is prohibited in any capacity:• On premises where liquor is served• In occupations at filling or service stations, including the retail

portion thereof• In occupations requiring the use of power-driven machinery• In most occupations in logging and saw milling• Any occupation in construction, including demolition and repair• Occupations involving the use of ladders, scaffolds, or their sub-

Operativo policiaco arroja nuevedetenidos por prostitución

Investigators from the Aurora Police Department’s Special OperationsGroup along with officers from the Community Oriented Policing Unitstaged an undercover prostitution detail last week and arrested nine men.They were all charged with solicitation of a sexual act for allegedly of-fering an undercover female Aurora Police officer money in exchangefor sexual favors.

The operation, which took place May 21, was the first in what AuroraPolice say will be regular operations aimed at curbing street level pros-titution complaints that typically increase in the area as the summermonths approach. The exact location of the detail is not being divulgedin order to protect the integrity of future stings.

Those charged with solicitation are:Orlando Ross, 42, of Wheaton; Alfonso Gonzalez, 48, of West

Chicago; and seven Aurora men: Jamie A. Hernandez, 30, of the 0-99block of South Lincoln Avenue; Nazario Fores, 22, of the 0-99 block ofNorth Anderson Street; Alejandro Medina-Alvarado, 39, of the 300 blockof Marion Avenue; Luis Barraza, 43, of the 300 block of Jefferson Street;Paul F. Young, 84, of the 600 block of Hamilton Street; Jeronimo Con-treras, 30, of the 1400 block of Wermes Street; and Juan Cirilo, 19, ofthe 2700 block of Village Green Drive.

In addition, Ross was charged with unlawful possession of a controlledsubstance and unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia after crack co-caine and a pipe commonly used for smoking the drug, were found inhis possession during the arrest process. Two Aurora men were alsocharged with riding their bicycles on the sidewalk in an apparent attemptto interfere with the undercover operation. They were identified asCharles Wheeler, 45, of the 300 block of Woodlawn Avenue; and CarlosLimas, 46, of the 200 block of Clark Street.

Per city ordinance, six of the men were using their vehicles in the com-mission of the alleged solicitation offenses and had them towed and im-pounded. In order to retrieve them, they had to pay $500.00 plusapplicable towing and storage costs.

Sting operation nets ninearrests for prostitution

Shooting leaves two injuredTwo, 19 year old Aurora men were shot at May 21 at about 11:20 a.m.

on the near southeast side. Both suffered serious gunshot wounds butwere not life-threatening.

The two were apparently approached on foot by an armed suspect asthey were in the driveway of a home in the 1100 block of Eliot Avenue.Multiple shots were fired.

The injured were taken to an Aurora hospital by a third man.The car that was transporting the injured, which showed obvious signs

of gunfire damage, was stopped by a patrol officer when it was approach-ing the hospital’s emergency room. The driver, who wasn’t injured, wasinterviewed by police.

The suspect is described as a Hispanic male, upper teens-lower ‘20’s,bald, and wearing a brown and black bandanna over his face. He alsohad on a white T-shirt and tennis shoes, and blue jean shorts. No one isin custody.

Dos hombres de 19 años de edad fueron heridos debala el 21 de mayo alrededor de las 11:20 a.m. en elsureste de la ciudad. Ambos sufrieron heridas de con-sideración, pero su vida no está en riesgo.

Aurora man suffersgun shot wounds

An 18-year-old Aurora man wasinjured when he was shot whilewalking in the 400 block of SouthBroadway in Aurora around 4:45p.m. on May 26.

The man was transported to thehospital with non-life-threateninginjuries. There is no one in custodyfor the shooting, which is being in-vestigated by police.

SPRINGFIELD – Two Chicago-area resident have died from com-plications related to H1N1 influenza, the first deaths linked to thisnovel flu virus in Illinois.

Dr. T. Arnold, director of the Illinois Department of Public Healthsaid that in addition to having H1N1 influenza, the individuals whodied had other underlying medical conditions. The first death wasfrom the city of Chicago and the second one was a Cook County res-ident.

“We are saddened by the deaths but, as has been noted in Illinoisand around the country, fatalities due to H1N1 continue to occur, es-pecially when there are underlying medical conditions that increasethe risk of severe illness,” Dr. Arnold said.

Due to the family’s wishes for privacy, the Department will not re-lease any other information about the cases.

A nine-vehicle accident on Rt.47 between Sugar Grove and El-burn shut down the road for sev-eral hours May 23. Two peopledied in the accident which in-volved automobiles and motor-cycles.

At approximately 8:30 a.m.the Kane County Sheriff’s De-partment received a report of atraffic crash with injuries on IlRt. 47 at the intersection ofSmith Rd. The initial investiga-tion revealed that a Black Cadil-lac was travelling south on Rt 47and was stopped waiting to turnleft onto Smith Rd. A HondaCivic was stopped behind theCadillac. The vehicles werewaiting for a large group of mo-torcycles to go past the intersec-tion. While the cars werewaiting a Toyota Alera whichwas traveling south on Rt 47 be-hind the stopped vehicles failedto stop and struck the rear of theHonda, causing it to enter intothe northbound lane of traffic.The Toyota eventually struck therear of the Cadillac.

When the Honda entered thenorthbound lane of traffic thegroup of motorcycles had not yet

cleared the intersection. It ap-pears that six of the motorcycleseither struck the Honda or werestruck by the Honda.

As a result of the crash 2 per-sons were pronounced deceasedat the scene by fire departmentpersonnel and 6 others weretransported to the hospital. Thedeceased are Wade E. Thomasand Denise A. Thomas of St.Charles.

One of those transported wasairlifted to Good Samaritan Hos-pital in Downers Grove. Theothers were taken to Delnor Hos-pital in Geneva

The driver of the Toyota, AliaN. Bernard from Aurora, was is-sued a citation for failure to re-duce speed to avoid an accident.

The group of motorcycles wasnot involved in a major organ-ized ride or charity function.They were riding as group to adestination in Wisconsin.

Alrededor de las 8:30 a.m. elDepartamento del Alguacil delCondado de Kane recibió un re-porte de un accidente en la inter-sección de la Ruta 47 y SmithRoad.

La investigación inicial revelóque un auto Cadillac negro viajabaen dirección sur y estaba espe-rando su turno para dar vuelta a laizquierda en Smith Road. Atrás delCadillac estaba un Honda Civic,también esperando su turno.Ambos vehículos estaban espe-rando a que un grupo considerablede motociclistas pasara por la in-tersección.

Mientras esto sucedía, un carroToyota Alera, que viajaba en direc-ción sur por la Ruta 47, no se de-tuvo y chocó por detrás al Honda.Con el impacto el Honda invadió

el carril en dirección norte de laRuta 47. El Toyota también im-pactó la parte de atrás del Cadillac.

Cuando el Honda fue empujadoal carril contrario, el grupo de mo-tociclistas todavía estaba transi-tando por la intersección. Lasprimeras investigaciones apuntan aque probablemente seis de los mo-tociclistas chocaron contra elHonda o fueron impactados por elHonda.

Como resultado del choque dospersonas, Wade E. Thomas yDense A. Thomas de St. Charles,fallecieron en el lugar del acci-dente y otras seis personas fuerontransportadas al hospital, cinco deellas a Delnor y una fue llevada en

Mueren dos personas porvirus H1N1 en Illinois

Dos residentes del área de Chicago han fallecido en los últimos días acausa de complicaciones relacionadas con la influenza H1N1, informóel director del Departamento de Salud Pública del estado, Dr. T. Arnold.

El Dr. Arnold dijo que, además de tener el virus de la influenzaH1N1 en su organismo, las personas que fallecieron tenían otrascondiciones médicas. El primer fallecido es un residente de Chicagoy la segunda muerte es de un residente del Condado de Cook.

“Estamos entristecidos por las muertes, pero como se ha dado enIllinois y en todo el país, las muertes debidas a H1N1 continúan ocur-rienod, especialmente cuanod hay condiciones médicas que aumentanel riesgo de enfermedades severas”, dijo el Dr. Arnold.

AuroraMemorial Day Parade

The City of Aurora held its annual Memorial Day Parade May 25, to honor thosewho have given their lives to preserve America’s freedom.

Thousands of people lined up the streets to see the parade floats, classic cars andmusic bands who participated.

Marching bands from East Aurora High School, Waubonsie Valley High School,West Aurora High School, Granger Middle School, Simmons Middle School, StillMiddle School and Waldo Middle School provided the musical entertainment.

World War II veterans who have taken part in Honor Flight Chicago trips to Wash-ington, D.C. also participated in the parade.

La Ciudad de Aurora realizó su desfile anual en honor de los caídos en algún conflicto armadoel 25 de mayo, para honrar a quienes han dado la vida por la libertad de este país.

Miles de personas se reunieron en las calles del centro de la ciudad para admirar los carros ale-góricos, los autos de colección y escuchar las bandas de música que participaron.

También desfilaron los veteranos de la Segunda Guerra Mundial que han participado en viajesa Washington, D.C. patrocinados por la organización Honor Flight Chicago.

AURORA – For second year in a row, La chicanita Bakery hosted itsExpo Chicanita, a display of their newest styles in cakes, in the parkinglot of Plaza Mexico, at the corner of New York and Union streets. Theexpo was originally planned for April 19, but was rescheduled due to badweather.

About 1000 people attended the event, held May 17 under sunny skies,to taste and admire the new line of cakes and displays for this season.Samples of cakes and pina coladas were offered to expo attendeesthroughout the afternoon.

Once more pastry chef Guadalupe Juarez showcased his creativity, ded-ication and effort in each one of his creations, which were admired byall.

Bakery manager Ricardo Parra said he was satisfied with the turnoutand the comments he had received about the event, which seems to bethe only one of its kind in the suburbs.

The new line of products includes new display stands for cakes, newcolor and flavor combinations, as well as a mannequin Quinceañera cake.

During the expo the organizers announced the winner of the teen pro-moters for the bakery. The winner received a cake valued at $700 for herQuinceañera party.

The expo ended with an inpromptu dance to the rhythm of “sonido”music.

Por segundo año consecutivo, La Chicanita Ba-kery realizó su Expo Chicanita en el estaciona-miento de Plaza México, en la esquina de lascalles New York y Union, en el este de Aurora.La exhibición, originalmente planeada para el 19de abril, tuvo que ser reprogramada después deque el clima no cooperó en la fecha original.

Alrededor de mil personas asistieron durante lasoleada tarde del 17 de mayo para probar y admi-rar los nuevos estilos y sabores de pasteles paraesta temporada. También fueron agasajados conmuestras de piñas coladas.

Una vez más el maestro pastelero GuadalupeJuárez demostró su creatividad, dedicación y em-peño en sus creaciones, que fueron del agrado delos asistentes.

Ricardo Parra, encargado de la panadería, dijoestar satisfecho con la asistencia de la gente, asícomo de los comentarios recibidos por la nuevalínea de productos.

Además, mencionó que esta parece ser una ex-hibición que no se ha realizado en ningún otro su-burbio.

La nueva línea de productos incluye bases di-ferentes para la presentación de pasteles, nuevascombinaciones de colores y sabores, así como unmaniquí de quinceañera cuya falda está com-puesta por las capas del pastel.

Durante la expo también se presentó a la afor-tunada ganadora de la promoción de la edecán dela panadería, quien se hizo acreedora a un pastelpara su fiesta de XV años con valor de 700 dóla-res.

La expo terminó ya entrada la tarde con un im-provisado baile al ritmo de música de sonido.

juez federal de apelacionesSonia Sotomayor, hija de puer-torriqueños, como la primerahispana en prestar servicio en laCorte Suprema de Estados Uni-dos.

Obama la elogió como una“fuente de inspiración”, con in-teligencia y compasión para in-terpretar sabiamente laconstitución.

Tras subrayar que su nomi-nada tiene más experiencia

como juez que cualquier otro miembrodel alto tribunal en el momento de su no-minación, Obama dijo que Sotomayor seha ganado “el respeto de sus colegas jue-ces, la admiración de muchos abogadosque presentan casos en su corte y el amorde sus secretarios, que la consideran unamaestra”.

WASHINGTON – President BarackObama chose federal appeals judge Sonia So-tomayor to become the nation’s first HispanicSupreme Court justice on May 26, praisingher as “an inspiring woman” with both the in-tellect and compassion to interpret the Con-stitution wisely.

Obama said Sotomayor has more experi-ence as a judge than any current member of thehigh court had when nominated, adding shehas earned the “respect of colleagues on thebench, the admiration of many lawyers whoargue cases in her court and the adoration ofher clerks, who look to her as a mentor.”

Standing next to Obama at the WhiteHouse, Sotomayor recalled a childhood spentin a housing project in the Bronx as well asher upper-echelon legal career: “I strive neverto forget the real world consequences of mydecisions on individuals, businesses and gov-ernment.”

Barring the unexpected, Senate confirma-tion seems likely, given the large Democraticmajority. If approved, she would join JusticeRuth Bader Ginsburg as the second womanon the current court, the third in history. Shewould succeed retiring Justice David Souter.

Senate Republicans pledged to give her afair hearing, and some questioned whethershe would base decisions on her personalfeelings, rather than constitutional principles.Given her background, any effort to filibusterher nomination could carry political risks,since Hispanics are the fastest-growing seg-ment of the population and an increasinglyimportant one politically.

Sotomayor would be unlikely to alter theideological balance of the court, since Soutergenerally sides with the liberals on key 5-4 rul-ings. But at 54, she is a generation younger

that Souter, and liberal outside groups hopeshe will provide a counterpoint to some of thesharply worded conservative rulings.

Introducing his choice, Obamasaid, “Along the way, she’s faceddown barriers, overcome the oddsand lived out the American dreamthat brought her parents here solong ago.”

The president called on the Sen-ate to confirm Sotomayor beforethe court begins its new term inOctober, and noted pointedly thatshe has already won Senate ap-proval twice in her career. Seven ofthe Senate’s current Republicansvoted to confirm her for the appeals court in1998.

She was nominated a federal judge by a Re-publican, President George H.W. Bush, thenelevated to the appeals court by a Democrat,Bill Clinton. Senate Republicans slow-walkedher confirmation more than a decade ago, inpart because she was viewed even then as apotential pick for the Supreme Court.

Sotomayor’s nomination opens a newphase in the drive to replace Souter, as liberaland conservative groups alike scour therecord she has compiled in 17 years on thefederal bench.

In one of her most memorable rulings asfederal district judge, in 1995, Sotomayorruled with Major League Baseball playersover owners in a labor strike that had led tothe cancellation of the World Series.

Sotomayor grew up in New York after herparents moved from Puerto Rico. She hasdealt with diabetes since age 8 and lost herfather at age 9, growing up under the care ofher mother in humble surroundings. As a girl,inspired by the Perry Mason television show,she knew she wanted to be a judge. She is di-vorced with no children.

Calderon launches Vive Mexico, acampaign to revitalize turism

MEXICO CITY – In an effort to reactivate the turism in Mexico, President FelipeCalderon launched a communications and promotioncampaign titled Vive Mexico. About 1,200 million pesosfrom Federal funds will be invested in this campaign.

Vive Mexico “is a true national movement that willrequire the participation of all Mexican citizens, in par-ticular of those who are more recognizable, those withthe most talent,” the president said. During the campaignpresentation Calderon was surrounded by artists, athletesand intellectuals.

“I invite everyone to join in this effort to let peopleoverseas know that to come to our country is a great ex-perience; that Mexico is not only abeautiful courtry, butalso a strong nation, capable of confronting and over-coming the thoughest adversity and that we are watingwith open ars on our beaches, our cities, our villages,”he said.

The campaign launch took place at the Francisco Imadero plaza in the Mexican presidencial residence of

Los Pinos. President Calderon , joined in the act by his wife Margarita Zavala, said thatduring this international economic and health crisis, Mexico needs all the citizens to talkloud and clear about how great are the country’s history, culture, music and traditions.

“We need to tell all athe world what we are: a strong nation, with a unity and identitythat cannot be repeated, and that even though we have had to face though challenges , par-ticularly in recent times, Mexico is united and Mexico is forging ahead,” he said.

Pachuca VS.Pumas: a never-before-seen final

Pachuca’s Tuzos and UNAM’s Pumas will face off on the finals of the firstdivision play-offs for the Clausura 2009 Tournament. This is a never beforeseen final.

Both teams have never faced each other in a tournament final, and onlyonce in the play-offs during the Apertura 2006 quarter-finals, when Tuzos

advanced to the next round with a score of two to one.Another important match between these two teams hap-

pened in 2004, when Pachuca, Apertura 2003 Champion,and Pumas, Clausura 2004 Champion, disputed the Cham-pion of Champions Cup, with Pumas earning the victorywith a global score of 7 to 3.

Pachuca left the Jaguares of Chiapas behind during thequarter-finals, with a global score of five goals to one., fac-ing the Indios of Ciudad Juarez in the semi-finals. Indioslost with a final score of 3 to 4.

Meanwhile Pumas get to the finals after some very dra-matic moments. They earned their tickets to the semifinalsand finals after scoring the victory goals only minutes be-fore the end of the game. During the quarter-finals, theydefeated the Tecolotes with a final score of 3 to 2, and inthe semi-finals, they were tied with Puebla in the finalscore, moving to the finals because they held a better po-sition in the general ranking.

For Pumas this is the 11th time they reach the finals,with five victories and five defeats. For Pachuca, this is the seventh timethey are fighting for the championship, with five titles won and one defeat.

Oddly enough, while both teams have never been together in the finals,their coaches, have faced each other while directing other teams. During theSummer 1997, Ricardo Ferreti was at the helm of Chivas of Guadalajara,while Enrique Meza was the director of the most popular team that season,the Toros of Neza, who were defeated in the final match.

After that Meza has earned four championships, while Ferreti has beendefeated in three.

In nominating Hon. Sonia Sotomayor tothe Supreme Court, President Obama brokeyet another promise to the American people.He promised hope and change and unity–but with Hon. Sotomayor, he brought any-thing but.

She has proved to be –through her wordsand rulings– one of the most divisive, racist,and sexist jurists this country has seen sincebefore the Civil Rights Movement. It’s hardto imagine the reaction from the Left if Pres-ident Bush would’ve nominated or ap-pointed or simply had dinner with someonewho said, “I would hope that a wise WhiteMan with the richness of his experiencewould more often than not reach a betterconclusion [as a judge] than a Latina womanwho hasn’t lived that life.”

Not only would that nominee or appoint-ment or dinner guest be ridden out of townby folks pumping their pitchforks, but thecry for the President himself to resignwould’ve deafened us all!

And yet, we don’t hear much when Presi-dent Obama’s nominee says, “I would hopethat a wise Latina woman with the richnessof her experience would more often than notreach a better conclusion [as a judge] than awhite male who hasn’t lived that life.”

Sure, some people critique her, but overallRepublicans have proved too nervous to re-spond. We don’t want to be labeled “racist”

for “attacking” a Latina. Or, more truthfully,we fear losing Hispanic votes.

Fear not, friends. She’s overcome remark-able hardships and adversity in her life. She istough and strong and wise, indeed. She cantake getting called to the carpet on her beliefs.(And thinking we need to take it easy onsomeone because of race is racist in and of it-self!). And Hispanic votes? Well, you havemine still. And the Democrats didn’t exactlyshave votes when they went after MiguelEstrada.

We as a party need to condemn her hate-ful, divisive, sexist, and racist remark. Whatshe said is horrible, wretched hate speech.Nothing less. Words like hers have beenused to oppress (and enslave!) so manygroups of people throughout history—in-cluding her (and my) own. Her line of think-ing is behind so much evil.

We as a party need to call for the retractionof her nomination and an apology from heras well as President Obama for thinking ablatant racist and sexist jurist would be ap-propriate to serve on the U.S Supreme Court.

Our president has shown poor judgmenthere. According to Hon. Sotomayor, maybehis race and sex are to blame. Perhaps if hewere a wise Latina, he’d have come to a bet-ter conclusion.

Al nominar a la honorable Sonia Soto-mayor a la Corte Suprema, el presidenteObama rompió otra promesa más a la genteamericana. Él prometió esperanza y cam-bio y unidad, pero con la honorable Soto-mayor, no hay nada de eso.

Ella ha probado ser, por medio de sus pa-labras y decisiones, una de las juristas másdivisivas, racistas y sexistas que ha vistoeste país desde antes del Movimiento delos Derechos Civiles. Es difícil imaginar lareacción de la izquierda si el presidentebush hubiera nominado, o nombrado osimplemente hubiera cenado con alguienque dijo “Esperaría que un Hombre Blancosensato con la riqueza de su experiencia,con más frecuencia llegara a la una mejorconclusión (como juez) que una mujer la-tina que no ha vivido esa vida”.

No solo esa persona nominada, nom-brada o simplemente invitada hubiera sidosacada de la ciudad por gente lista para lin-charla, ¡pero el clamor de la gente para queel presidente renunciara nos hubiera ensor-decido a todos!

Es cierto, algunas personas la critican,pero en general los republicanos han estado

demasiado nerviosos para responder. Noqueremos ser etiquetados de “racistas” por“atacar” a una latina. O, para ser más ho-nestos, tememos perder los votos hispanos.

No tengan miedo mis amigos. Ella ha su-perado muchos obstáculos y adversidad en suvida. Es dura, fuerte e inteligente. Ella puedeaceptar que le pidan cuentas de sus creencias(Y pensar que necesitamos ser suaves con al-guien debido a su raza es en sí racista). ¿Y losvotos hispanos? Bueno, todavía tienen elmío. y los demócratas tampoco perdieronvotos cuando atacaron a Miguel Estrada.

Como partido necesitamos condenar su co-mentario sexista, divisivo, racista y odioso.Lo que ella dijo es un discurso horrible y mi-serable de odio. Nada menos. Palabras comolas de ella se han usado para oprimir (¡y es-clavizar!) a tantos grupos durante la historia,incluyendo el suyo y el mío. Su línea de pen-samiento está detrás de mucho mal.

Como partido necesitamos pedir la re-tractación de su nominación y una disculpapor parte de ella y del presidente Obama,por pensar que una jurista tan racista y se-xista sería apropiada para servir en la Cortesuprema de Justicia de los Estados Unidos.

Nuestro presidente ha mostrado pocojuicio aquí. De acuerdo a la honorable So-tomayor, tal vez su raza y sexo tienen laculpa. Tal vez si él fuera una latina sensata,hubiera llego a una mejor conclusión.

También se recuerda a los residentes no pueden realizar reparaciones mecánicasde carros en las calles de la ciudad.También está prohibido dejar autos estacionadosen las casas montados sobre gatos hidráulicos. Las reglas de la ciudad solamentepermiten que las personas cambien el aceite del carro que utilizan en su casa, perono en autos que no son de ellos. Al hacer el cambio de aceite en casa, usted tiene laresponsabilidad de llevar el aceite sucio a un lugar autorizado para ser reciclado. Estáprohibido y puede ser multado si lo tira en la calle o en las alcantarillas.

Auto repairs at home

Lately we have been noticing that some people have been dumping tiresand trash in some alleys. These activities are prohibited and people who arecaught doing it will receive a $500 fine.

I also want to remind residents that doing auto repairs on city streets isprohibited and you cannot leave your car parked on hydraulic jacks, evenif it’s in your property.

City ordinances allow people to do oil changes to their own car at home,but not to somebody else’s car. When doing this, you need to take the dirty

oil to an authorized dealer who can send it out to be recycled. You will be finedif you are caught dumping the oil on the street or in the sewer.
