CD. DE MÉXICO – Autoridades mexicanas arrestaron a un hombre cercano al líder del Cártel de Sinaloa, Joaquín ‘El Chapo’ Guzmán, en Culiacán, Sinaloa.

El hombre, identificado como Felipe Cabrera Sarabia ‘El Inge’, aparentemente estaba a cargo de las operaciones del cartel en el norteño estado de Durango y en el sur del estado de Chihuahua.

Cabrera Sarabia fue detenido sin que se realizara un solo disparo en un operativo realizado el 23 de diciembre en Culiacán, donde está el centro de operaciones de esta organización criminal. EL arresto fue dado a conocer el 26 de diciembre.

El detenido estará bajo arraigo por 40 días mientras se investiga su participación en actividades de crimen organizado y tráfico de drogas.

Él es visto como el responsable de las muertes de muchas de las víctimas cuyos cuerpos fueron localizados en narcofosas en todo el estado de Durango.

De acuerdo a oficiales de la Secretaría de la Defensa Nacional (SEDENA), Cabrera Sarabia estaba involucrado en un pleito por el territorio de Durango y el sur de Chihuahua con la organización Ms, aparentemente encabezada por Mario Núñez, ‘El M10’.

En el operativo, autoridades decomisaron armas de fuego, equipo de computación y documentos.

De acuerdo al vocero de la SEDENA, Ricardo Trevilla, Cabrear Sarabia formó una organización criminal con sus hermanos Luis Alberto, José Luis y Alejandro, quienes aparentemente empezaron sembrando y distribuyendo marihuana en la sierra de Durango.

Trevilla dijo que la forma violenta en que

‘El Inge’ manejaba sus asuntos hizo que escalara posiciones dentro de la organización, convirtiéndose en un hombre de confianza del líder del cartel, ‘El Chapo’ Guzmán.

“La Violencia con la que Cabrera Sarabia mantenía el control de sus actividades delictivas le valió para escalar en importancia al interior del a organización de El Chapo Guzmán, logrando ser pieza clave en el trasiego de droga, incluso proporcionarle seguridad a este capo en su zona de operación en la Sierra de Durango”, dijo Trevilla.

Felipe Cabrera no solo se convirtió en un hombre de confianza, también era el principal lavador de dinero para la organización a través de ferreterías, restaurantes, gasolineras, tiendas de abarrotes y de materiales.

De acuerdo a oficiales federales, los problemas entre ‘Los Ms’, un grupo fiel a Ismael ‘Mayo’ Zambada encargado de la venta y distribución de drogas, y ‘Los Cabrera’ se recrudeció por diferencias entre sus líderes. Esto llevó a una lucha por el control del territorio con un alza en los incidentes de violencia, incluyendo fosas clandestinas, secuestros, extorsiones, quema de negocios y residencias y publicación de narco mensajes en contra de organizaciones rivales.

Esta actividad criminal fue sacada a la luz el 11 de abril de 2011, cuando las autoridades descubrieron una fosa clandestina en el fraccionamiento Las Fuentes en la capital del estado.

La primera de las fosas clandestinas o narcofosas mostró no solo el poder de ambos grupos, sino también la lucha interna en que se encontraban.

De acuerdo a información del diario El Universal, un grupo perteneciente a ‘Los Ms’ secuestró a un hijo de Felipe Cabrera. Esta situación , en la que además ‘Los Ms’ exigían pago de piso a ‘Los Cabrera, hizo que estos últimos incendiaran gasolineras en Canatlán y quemaran algunas residencias en los fraccionamientos Santa Teresa y Colinas del Saltito.

Después de este ataque, ambos grupos comenzaron a pelear. Entre las víctimas de esta lucha están nueve cuerpos arrojados en la plaza de toros Alejandra; ocho cuerpos degollados encontrados en la carretera Durango-Mezquital, entre ellos el del sub jefe de custodios del Centro de Readaptación Social número 1; así como dos cuerpos encontrados en una gasolinera en la ciudad de Durango.

Fuentes dentro de la Policía Federal dicen que la lucha entre ambos grupos aumentó cuando las autoridades capturaron a Bernabé Monje Silva ‘El M14’ en marzo pasado, un arresto que ‘Los Ms’ atribuyen a Felipe Cabrera.

Cuando el M14 fue arrestado, él dio información a las autoridades sobre las narcofosas, hecho que hizo aumentar todavía más la violencia entre ambos grupos.

MEXICO CITY – Mexican authorities have arrested a man close to the Sinaloa Cartel leader Joaquin ‘El Chapo’ Guzman, in Culiacan, Sinaloa.

The man identified as Felipe Cabrera Sarabia ‘The Engineer,’ allegedly was in charge of operations in the northern state of Durango and in southern Chihuahua area for the cartel.

Cabrera Sarabia was caught without a shot being fired in an operation conducted Dec. 23 in Culiacan, Sinaloa, where the cartel’s headquarters are located. He will remain under federal custody for 40 days while he is being investigated for his participation in organized crime and drug trafficking activities.

He is considered responsible for the deaths of many of the victims found in mass graves throughout the state of Durango.

According to Mexican Army (SEDENA) officials, Cabrera Sarabia was involved in a dispute for the Durango and southern Chihuahua territory with the Ms organization, allegedly headed by Mario Nunez, ‘the M10.’

In the operation authorities seized firearms, computer equipment and documents.

According to Mexican Army spokesman Ricardo Trevilla,

Cabrera Sarabia formed a criminal group with his brothers, Luis Alberto, Jose Luis and Alejandro, who allegedly started out growing marihuana in the mountainside of Durango state.

Trevilla said ‘The Engineer’s’ way of handling situations with violence made him escalate the ranks of the organization and becoming a man of trust of cartel leader ‘Chapo’ Guzman.

“The violence with which Cabrera Sarabia kept control of his criminal enterprises helped him climb the power ladder inside the ‘Chapo’ Guzman organization, becoming a key figure in the transportation of drugs, even providing security for the drug lord in his area of operations in the Durango mountains,” Trevilla said.

Felipe Cabrera not only became a man of trust, he was also the main money launderer for the organization through hardware stores, restaurants, gas stations, grocery stores and construction supplies businesses.

According to federal officials, the problems between ‘Los Ms’, a group aligned with Ismael ‘El Mayo’ Zambada, who are in charge of sales and distribution of drugs, and the ‘Los Cabrera’ brothers escalated for differences between their leaders. This led to a fight to control the territory and a sharp increase in violent incidents, including clandestine burials, kidnappings, extortions, torching of businesses and residences

and publication of messages against rival crime groups.The criminal trail was exposed April 11, 2011 when

authorities uncovered a clandestine burial site in Las Fuentes neighborhood in the capital city of Durango.

The first of the mass graves showed not only the power of both groups, but also their in fight.

According to El Universal newspaper, a group belonging to ‘Los Ms’ kidnapped one of Felipe Cabrera’s sons. This situation created by ‘Los Ms’, who were demanding payment for the right to operate in the area, prompted ‘Los Cabrera’ to torch gas stations in Canatlan, and burning of some residences in the Santa Teresa and Colinas del Saltito neighborhoods.

After this attack, both groups began fighting. Among the casualties of this fight are nine bodies thrown in the Alejandra bullfighting rink, eight beheaded bodies found in the Durango-Mezquital road, among them a deputy chief of guards for the Prison 1 in the state, as well as two bodies found at a gas station in the city of Durango.

Federal Police sources said the fight between both groups escalated when authorities captured Bernabe Monje Silva ‘El M14’ last March, an arrest that ‘Los Ms’ attributed to Felipe Cabrera.

When M14 was arrested, he gave information about the mass graves, which increased the fight between both groups.

Most-wanted drug trafficker arrested in Mexico City

MEXICO CITY – Luis Rodriguez Olivera ‘El Güero’, who is in the most-wanted list, and for whom the U.S. government had offered a $5 million reward, was arrested at the Mexico City airport Dec. 27.

He is being accused of money laundering and criminal association to import, possess and distribute cocaine to the United States.

He is allegedly responsible for cocaine trafficking from Mexico to the United States

through Texas for distribution nationwide.Rodriguez Oliver was indicted in a U.S.

federal court in 2009 for cocaine-smuggling and other charges.

He was a member of the “The Blondies” criminal group along with his brothers, and they are linked to the trafficking of cocaine to the United States between 1996 and 2008.

They allegedly conducted these activities under the direction of the Pacific Cartel, headed by Joaquin Guzman Loera.

CD. DE MÉXICO – Luis Rodríguez Olvera ‘El Güero’, quien está en la lista de los más buscados y por el cual el gobierno estadounidense ofreció una recompensa de cinco millones de dólares, fue arrestado en el aeropuerto de la Ciudad de México el 27 de diciembre.

Rodríguez Olvera está acusado de lavado de dinero y asociación criminal para importar, poseer y distribuir cocaína a los Estados Unidos.

Él es el supuesto responsable del tráfico de

cocaína desde México hasta los Estados Unidos pasando por Texas, de donde se distribuye a nivel nacional.

Rodríguez Olivera fue acusado en una corte federal de los Estados Unidos en 2009 por contrabando de cocaína y otros cargos.

Fue miembro del grupo criminal ‘Los Güeritos’, integrado por sus hermanos, grupo que ha sido ligado con el Cártel del Pacífico, encabezado por Joaquín Guzmán Loera.

‘Los Güeritos’ están relacionados con el tráfico de cocaína a Estados Unidos entre los años 1996 y 2008.

Temporary Protected Status (TPS)

Cuando los disturbios civiles, la violencia o los desastres naturales surgen en distintos lugares del mundo, surgen inquietudes sobre la seguridad de extranjeros originarios de esos lugares en problemas que están actualmente en Estados Unidos.

Existe una provisión en el Acta de Inmigración y Nacionalidad para ofrecer Estatus de Protección Temporal a un extranjero que está en los Estados Unidos, ya sea de forma legal o ilegal.

Cuando un extranjero recibe TPS, se le da un documento de registro y un permiso de trabajo por el tiempo que dure el TPS.

Los Estados Unidos actualmente proporcionan TPS a más de 300 mil extranjeros de un total de siete países: El Salvador, Honduras, Haití, Liberia, Nicaragua, Somalia y Sudán.

El TPS es una forma de alivio que puede ser otorgado bajo las siguientes condiciones:

1) Hay un conflicto armado continuo que representa una amenaza seria para la seguridad personal; o

2) Un estado extranjero solicita el TPS porque no puede manejar de forma temporal el regreso de sus ciudadanos debido a un desastre ambiental; o

3) Hay condiciones extraordinarias y temporales en un estado extranjero que evitan el retorno de extranjeros, con la condición de que el otorgar el TPS sea consistente con los intereses nacionales estadounidenses.

Los extranjeros que reciben TPS NO ESTAN en un programa de inmigración que les permita obtener la residencia legal o la ciudadanía.

La naturaleza temporal del TPS es evidente en las regulaciones. El Departamento de

Seguridad Nacional ha dejado en claro que la información que recoge cuando un extranjero se registra para el TPS puede ser usada para empezar procesos de exclusión o deportación una vez que se niegue, retire o expire el TPS.

Cuando se solicita el TPS hay una cuota inicial de 50 dólares, también hay una cuota de 85 dólares por servicios biométricos, que incluye huellas digitales, fotografía y firma electrónica. Si usted tiene entre 14 y 65 años de edad, usted puede solicitar un permiso de trabajo. Hay una cuota adicional de 380 dólares para obtener el permiso de trabajo.

Actualmente hay un periodo de registro inicial solamente para las personas originarias de Sudán del Sur.

Usted no se puede registrar inicialmente para el TPS a menos que lo solicite bajo el periodo original de registro. When civil unrest, violence, or natural disasters erupt in spots around the world, concerns arise over the safety of foreign nationals from these troubled places who are currently in the United States.

A provision exists in the Immigration and Nationality Act to offer Temporary Protected Status to a foreign national who is in the United States either legally or illegally.

When that foreign national receives TPS, he is granted a registration document and an employment authorization document for the duration of TPS.

The United States currently provides TPS to over 300,000 foreign national from a total of seven countries: El Salvador, Haiti, Honduras, Liberia, Nicaragua, Somalia and Sudan.

TPS is a form of relief that may be granted under the following conditions:

1) There is ongoing armed conflict posing serious threat to personal safety; or

2) A foreign state requests TPS because it temporarily cannot handle the return of nationals due to environmental disaster; or

3) There are extraordinary and temporary conditions in a foreign state that prevent aliens from returning, providing that granting TPS is consistent with U.S. national interests.

Foreign nationals that receive TPS ARE NOT on an immigration track that leads to legal residency or citizenship.

The temporary nature of TPS is apparent in the regulations. The Department of Homeland Security has made clear that information it collects when an alien registers for TPS may be used to institute exclusion or deportation proceedings upon the denial, withdraw or expiration of TPS.

When filing for TPS there is an initial $50 application fee, there is also an $85 biometrics service, which includes fingerprints, photographs and electronic signature. If you are between the ages of 14 and 65, you can apply for work authorization. There is an

additional $380 employment authorization fee.

Currently there is an initial registration period only for people who are from the country of South Sudan.

You cannot initially register for TPS unless you originally file for TPS under the initial registration period. Therefore, if you are from El Salvador, Haiti, Honduras, Liberia, Nicaragua, Somalia or Sudan and you did not initially file during the original registration period, or you let your registration lapse and you did not reregister during the re-registration period, you cannot sign up for TPS at this point.

There are some circumstances where you may be able to obtain derivative benefits if your spouse or other family member had originally filed for TPS but you did not, or if you can prove extenuating circumstances of why you did not file during the initial registration period or re-registration period.

TPS is not designed for you to obtain legal

status, permanent residency, and some day, U.S. citizenship. It is designed so the United States government does not sent you to back to the country that either has political unrest or has had a national disaster for specific periods of time.

ARIZONA – Activistas latinos quieren que el controversial alguacil del Condado Maricopa Joe Arpaio sea destituido de su puesto, además de que sus oficiales dejen de aplicar el perfil racial contra los latinos.

El diario Arizona Republic publicó que los activistas se

reunieron para celebrar una decisión de la corte que prohíbe a los oficiales de Arpaio el detener a gente por la simple sospecha de que sean inmigrantes indocumentados.

“La simple presencia no es un crimen”, dijo Antonio Bustamante, abogado de derechos civiles y director de la Barra Hispana de Abogados de Arizona.

El abogado de Arpaio dijo la semana pasada que planea

apelar la decisión de la corte y que sus oficiales cumplirán con esta determinación mientras siguen haciendo cumplir leyes relacionadas con la inmigración.

Un representante de la organización Respect Respeto dijo al diario Arizona Republic que van a continuar documentando las historias de ente que ha sido supuestamente maltratada por agentes de la oficina de Arpaio.

Girl dies in car crash on her way to a hospital

Niña muere tras accidente automovilístico en camino al hospital

AURORA – Una niña de 3 años de Aurora que era transportada a un hospital para recibir atención médica, murió después de que su madre chocara a unos cuantos minutos del hospital.

La niña, identificada como Kayla Bell, era transportada al hospital Rush Copley alrededor de las 5:50 p.m. del 26 de diciembre. Su madre, Carla A. Bell, de 30 años de edad, llevaba a la niña al hospital ya que aparentemente estaba pasando por

un ataque de asma y tenía dificultad para respirar.

Carla Bell manejaba en dirección sur por Waterford Drive, cuando aparentemente trató de rebasar a un automóvil por el carril izquierdo, a la altura de una curva en Fox Pointe Drive. Bell aparentemente se dio cuenta que venía un vehículo en dirección norte y maniobró para regresar a su carril, pero chocó con el automóvil que había tratado de rebasar, perdió el control de su vehículo y se salió del camino, impactándose contra una cerca.

Un oficial de policía de Aurora que había realizado una detención de tránsito escuchó el choque y de inmediato se dirigió al lugar de los hechos. Ahí encontró a Carla Bell, quien le informó que la niña no estaba respirando. El oficial inmediatamente sacó a la niña del vehículo y le dio resucitación cardiopulmonar hasta que llegaron los paramédicos, quienes trasladaron a la niña al hospital.

La niña falleció poco después de su llegada al nosocomio.

Los resultados de una autopsia

preliminar indicaron que la niña murió debido a un problema médico y no al choque. No se encontraron rastros de muerte violenta.

La madre de la niña, Carla Bell, recibió tratamiento en el hospital por heridas en la cabeza. Tanto el chofer como el pasajero del otro vehículo involucrado en el choque no necesitaron atención médica.

La policía se encuentra investigando el choque y hasta el momento no se ha dado ninguna multa relacionada con este incidente.

AURORA – A 3-year-old Aurora girl who was being transported to a local hospital to get medical attention died after her mother crashed her vehicle a few minutes away from the hospital.

The girl, identified as Kayla Bell, was on her way to Rush Copley Hospital at about 5:50 p.m. Dec. 26 when the accident happened.

Her mother, Carla A. Bell, 30, was driving the girl to the hospital as the child was apparently suffering from an asthma attack and was having

trouble breathing.Carla Bell was southbound on Waterford Drive

when she apparently tried to pass another vehicle on the left side, where the road curves at Fox Pointe Drive, but saw a northbound vehicle. She then swerved back into the southbound lane but sideswiped the vehicle she was trying to pass, lost control of her automobile and left the roadway, hitting a fence before the vehicle stopped.

An Aurora Police officer who was in the area on a traffic stop heard the crash and responded to the scene of the crash. He found Carla Bell, who told him the girl was not breathing. The officer

pulled the girl from the vehicle and administered CPR until paramedics arrived and transported Kayla to the hospital, where she was pronounced dead a short time later.

Preliminary autopsy results show that the cause of death was a medical issue and not related to the crash. There were no signs of foul play.

The girl’s mother, Carla Bell, was treated for head injuries at the hospital. Neither the driver nor the passenger of the other vehicle involved in the crash were injured in the incident.

Police are investigating the crash and no tickets have been issued.

AURORA – La tasa de criminalidad en Aurora continúa bajando, de acuerdo a un reporte del FBI con información de los primeros seis meses de 2011.

De acuerdo a la información del FBI, entre enero y junio de 2011 disminuyó el número de crímenes violentos en general (asesinato, violación, robo y asalto) en un nueve por ciento en comparación

con el mismo periodo del año 2010. Mientras tanto los crímenes contra la propiedad (robo, hurto, incendio intencional) disminuyeron 5 por ciento en general.

Las estadísticas por cada crimen muestran que el robo de vehículos bajó en un 22 por ciento, mientras que la violación disminuyó 44 por ciento. Sin embargo, se registró un aumento en robos del 11 por ciento y de robo a propiedad en un 5 por ciento durante los primeros seis meses del año.

En cuanto a asesinatos, la ciudad registró cuatro en todo el año 2010, mientras que de enero a junio de este año solo se ha registrado uno, la muerte en junio de un hombre de West Chicago. El segundo asesinato del año se registró el 21 de diciembre. Si 2011 termina con dos asesinatos, este sería el año con menos crímenes de este tipo desde 2008, cuando también se registraron dos.

Estas estadísticas revelan que los índices de crimen en aurora están por debajo de los de otras ciudades del estado. El reporte emitido por el FBI incluye información sobre Aurora, Chicago, Elgin, Joliet, Peoria, Rockford y Springfield.

La información muestra que por cada 10 mil residentes en Aurora se registraron poco menos de 15 crímenes

violentos. Solo Elgin tuvo un índice más bajo, mientras que Rockford y Springfield tuvieron un índice tres veces más alto que el de Aurora.

En cuanto a crímenes contra la propiedad, se registraron 86 crímenes de este tipo por cada 10 mil residentes en Aurora. Chicago, Peoria, Rockford y Springfield tuvieron índices más altos que Aurora en cuanto a crímenes contra la propiedad.

Un crimen que es de preocupación para autoridades y residentes son los tiroteos, que también han disminuido. Hasta el 19 de diciembre la policía de Aurora tiene registrados 55 tiroteos en la ciudad, en comparación con 73 en todo 2010. Hace tan solo seis años, en 2005, se registraron más de 230 tiroteos en la ciudad.

AURORA – The crime rate continues to go down in Aurora, according to a report released by the FBI with information from the first six months of 2011.

According to the FBI, between January and June the number of violent crimes in general went down nine percent from the same period last year. The category of property crimes also went down by five percent.

Violent crimes include murder, rape, robbery and assault while property crimes include burglary, theft and arson.

Statistics by each crime show that motor vehicle theft went down by 22 percent, while rape went down 44 percent. Only two crimes went up during the first half of the year: robberies, six percent; and burglaries, five percent.

As far as murders go, the city registered four in 2010, while there was only one murder in Aurora during the first half of 2011, a West Chicago man that was killed in June. The city registered a second murder on Dec. 21. If the year ends

with only two murders, this will be the year with the fewest since 2008, when two people were also murdered.

These statistics show that Aurora crime rates are below other large cities in the state. The FBI information includes Aurora, Chicago, Elgin, Joliet, Peoria, Rockford and Springfield.

The information shows that for every 10,000 residents in Aurora there were a little less than 15 violent crimes. Only Elgin had a lower rate. Meanwhile, Rockford and Springfield had rates three times higher than Aurora’s.

When it comes to crimes against property, there were 86 crimes reported for every 10,000 residents in Aurora. Chicago, Peoria, Rockford and Springfield had higher rates in this category.

A crime that worries authorities and residents are the shootings, which also had gone down. Through Dec. 19 Aurora police had registered 55 shootings in the city, compared with 73 in 2010. Only six years ago, in 2005, there were over 230 shootings reported throughout Aurora.

Bond set at $500,000 for alleged Aurora murderer

AURORA – El hombre acusado de asesinar a su novia en su departamento del este de la ciudad fue presentado ante un juez, quien le fijó una fianza de 500 mil dólares.

El hombre fue identificado como Delbert Cooper, de 31 años de edad y residente de la cuadra 900 de Second Avenue.

Cooper está acusado de cuatro cargos de asesinato en primer grado.

De acuerdo a las autoridades, Cooper fue arrestado el 21 de diciembre por haber presuntamente asesinado a su pareja, Rennee Ann

Perry, de 21 años, en el edificio de apartamentos Maple Terrace Apartments.

El cuerpo de la mujer fue descubierto dentro del apartamento la mañana del 21 de diciembre., después de que las autoridades realizaran una visita para comprobar que la mujer estaba bien.

Una autopsia determinó que la causa principal de muerte de Perry fue el estrangulamiento, pero ella también había sido apuñalada.

Cooper fue identificado como sospechoso por las autoridades después de revisar un video del sistema de seguridad del complejo de apartamentos y de entrevistar a vecinos.

AURORA – The man accused with murdering his live-in girlfriend

in her east-side apartment appeared before a judge, who set his bail at $500,000.

The man was identified as Delbert

Cooper, 31, of the 900 block of Second Avenue.

Cooper was charged with four counts of first-degree murder.

According to authorities, Cooper was arrested Dec. 21 after he allegedly murdered his girlfriend, Rennee Ann Perry, 21, in her Maple Terrace Apartments unit.

The woman’s body was discovered in her apartment the morning of Dec. 21, after authorities conducted a well-being check on her.

An autopsy revealed the main cause of death was strangulation, but she had also been stabbed.

Cooper was identified as a suspect

in the case after they checked a video of the security system and interviews with neighbors.

Authorities said the couple had a history of domestic violence.

Police originally thought Cooper had fled the area, possibly to Chicago, where he has relatives. But the investigation revealed that he had been taken to an Aurora hospital by ambulance at about 4:30 a.m. Dec. 20, and that he had used a false name.

According to police, Cooper allegedly called 911 from another apartment in the building, saying he had tried to commit suicide by cutting one of his fingers. Cooper

was taken to an Aurora hospital, where he received treatment for the cut. He was then transferred to another facility for psychiatric evaluation.

It was at this location that he was arrested at about 7 p.m. Dec. 21.

Meanwhile, police said they recovered a knife that could have been used in Perry’s attack.

The victim is survived by two daughters: one is two years old and the other one seven weeks old. According to neighbors, the children were in state custody and Perry was trying to get them back. Cooper’s next court appearance is set for 9 a.m. Jan. 5.

Five dead and dozens intoxicated by Christmas dinner in Guadalajara

GUADALAJARA – Five interns of a drug rehabilitation center died and 37 more were sickened by a poisoned Christmas dinner in Guadalajara.

Authorities are investigating the incident to determine if it was accidental or intentional.

The interns apparently ate soy sausage the night of Dec. 25 and a few minutes later they started showing signs of intoxication.

“When the containers with food were passed around, there was a strong metal odor, we started eating and 10 minutes later I wanted to throw up, I had sharp pain in my head and low pressure, my strength was diminishing and at the same time I saw my comrades falling down,” said Jose de Jesus Cajero, one of the interns.

The rehab center cook, Alfonso Nunez, told CNNMexico that he received the food like every night, in a bag, and that he didn’t notice anything different.

“It didn’t smell bad or looked bad”, he said. The man also ate the soy sausage and said that in less than half an hour he also started showing poisoning symptoms.

Five of the interns died at the rehab center, while 37 more were taken to area hospitals and three are in critical condition.

“We don’t know if it was done accidentally or intentionally, we are surprised by how fast these people got sick, in a couple of minutes they were in critical condition… we believed it could have been a very strong toxic,” the cook said.

Meanwhile, neighbors of the center have said that it’s common for people to take donations of food, clothing, blankets and other items to the interns.

Some media outlets reported that the soy sausage used for dinner had been donated to the center, but this information has not been confirmed.

“In solidarity, people here give them things… that’s why when you say the food that made them sick was donated, is not a surprise,” a neighbor said.

Authorities are investigating the incident. While Red Cross medical personnel has said the intoxicating agent was cyanide,

personnel from the Jalisco Forensic Sciences Institute has not officially determined the chemical or substance

that made these people sick.Institute personnel returned to the rehab

center to get more samples of food and other elements to determine what

caused the intoxication, as there is the possibility that some

of the interns who got sick didn’t eat the

food.

GUADALAJARA – Cinco personas que se encontraban recluidas en un centro de rehabilitación contra las drogas en Guadalajara fallecieron, y 37 más resultaron afectadas seriamente, cuando consumieron comida contaminada para Navidad.

Las autoridades están investigando si este envenenamiento fue intencional o accidental.

Aparentemente los internos del centro de rehabilitación cenaron chorizo de soya la noche del 25 de diciembre y minutos más tarde comenzaron a sentirse gravemente enfermos.

“Cuando pasaron los botes con la comida, había un fuerte olor a metal, empezamos a comer y a los 10 minutos, sentía ganas de vomitar, tenía punzadas en la cabeza y la presión baja, empecé a perder fuerza y al mismo tiempo vi el caídero de los compañeros”, dijo José de Jesús Cajero, uno de los internos.

El cocinero del centro, Alfonso Núñez, dijo a CNNMéxico que él recibió la comida en una bolsa como cada noche y que no se dio cuenta de que hubiera nada extraño.

“No olía ni se veía mal”, dijo. El hombre también consumió el chorizo de soya y dijo que en menos de media hora también presentaba síntomas de intoxicación.

Cinco de los internos fallecieron en el centro de rehabilitación y sólo tres de los 37 que fueron hospitalizados siguen en estado crítico.

“No sabemos si fue de manera intencional o accidental, nos sorprende la rapidez con la que se agravaron estas personas, en un par de minutos estaban críticos… creemos que pudo ser un tóxico demasiado fuerte”, dijo el cocinero.

Por su parte, vecinos del centro de rehabilitación han dicho que es común que personas lleven donativos a los internos, no solamente de comida, sino también de ropa, cobijas y otros artículos.

En algunos medios se reportó que el chorizo de soya que aparentemente causó la intoxicación fue donado al centro, versión que no ha sido confirmada.

“Aquí la gente en solidaridad con ellos les regala cosas… por eso cuando dice que la comida que los intoxicó venía de una donación, no es extraño”, dijo un vecino.

Las autoridades se encuentran investigando el incidente, ya que el personal de la Cruz Roja dijo que la intoxicación masiva fue causada por cianuro, mientras que el personal del Instituto Jalisciense de Ciencias Forenses no ha determinado el químico o sustancia que causó estos malestares.

Personal de esta institución recabó muestras de alimentos en el centro de rehabilitación, así como de otros elementos, ya que al parecer no todos los intoxicados consumieron los alimentos.

De acuerdo a las autoridades de Guadalajara, el Centro de Rehabilitación para Adictos Garam operaba clandestinamente y la mayor parte de los alimentos que ahí se consumían era producto de donativos.

CD. DE MÉXICO – Agencias de la ley en los estados de California, Arizona, Nuevo México y Texas han pedido al gobierno federal que les proporcione entrenamiento militar y equipo para hacerle frente a los cárteles mexicanos de las drogas y la amenaza que representan.

De acuerdo al periódico El Universal, información obtenida de la Agencia Antidrogas Estadounidense

(DEA, por sus siglas en inglés), el Pentágono y el Departamento de Seguridad Nacional

(DHS), muestra que agencias locales de la ley han adquirido

vehículos blindados, armas M-16 y M-14, así como

aumentar su arsenal. Ellos también han solicitado aviones no tripulados y están recibiendo algo de ayuda del Departamento de la Defensa.

De acuerdo a información de DHS, la policía en Tyler, Texas ya está usando vehículos blindados todoterreno para transporte de personal. Estos vehículos son capaces de resistir ataques con rifles AK-47.

Steve McCraw, director del Departamento de Seguridad Pública de Texas, dijo que “los cárteles mexicanos de las drogas están usando tácticas militares, aún dentro de Estados Unidos, y que sus capacidades estaban “normalmente asociadas con las usadas por organizaciones militares, incluyendo la coordinación de operaciones tácticas, uso de armas automáticas, granadas, análisis de tendencias, comunicaciones seguras e intercepciones”.

También existe información de que la Patrulla fronteriza estará recibiendo equipo donado por el Pentágono. La mayor parte de este equipo será usado en operativos contra cárteles de las drogas y terroristas.

Por otra parte, un nuevo avión no tripulado será puesto en funcionamiento en Arizona, para rastrear a

traficantes de drogas e inmigrantes indocumentados que crucen la frontera.

SAN BERNARDINO, CALIFORNIA – La policía ha arrestado a un hombre de 19 años, quien aparentemente disparó en contra de un soldado estadounidense, hiriéndolo gravemente. El soldado estaba visitando a su familia por la Navidad después de haber sobrevivido a un ataque suicida en Afganistán.

La policía de San Bernardino dijo que Rubén Ray Jurado se había entregado a las autoridades en Chino Hills, a aproximadamente 35 millas al este de Los Ángeles, el 26 de diciembre. Él fue acusado de intento de asesinato y de varios agravantes a la sentencia por usar un arma de fuego.

Jurado fue acusado en conexión con el tiroteo el 23 de diciembre que dejó gravemente herido a Christopher Sullivan, un soldado de 22 años de edad y acreedor a un Corazón Púrpura.

De acuerdo a las autoridades, Jurado, quien había jugado futbol en la escuela con Sullivan, estaba discutiendo sobre futbol con el hermano de Sullivan durante una fiesta de bienvenida al soldado el 23 de diciembre. Durante la

discusión Jurado golpeó al hermano de Sullivan, quien intervino para detener la pelea. Es entonces cuando aparentemente Jurado saca una pistola y dispara varias veces, hiriendo a Christopher en el cuello.

Familiares dijeron que Christopher permanece en condición crítica en el hospital. Médicos han dicho que la bala destrozó la espina dorsal y lo ha dejado paralizado del cuello hacia abajo.

Sullivan resultó herido en un ataque suicida el año pasado en la provincia de Kandahar mientras servía con la División 101 de Infantería. A consecuencia del ataque se fracturó la clavícula y tuvo daños cerebrales. Antes del tiroteo se encontraba recuperándose en Kentucky, donde estaba estacionado. Sullivan se encontraba de descanso con su familia cuando se registró el tiroteo. De acuerdo a su hermano, a Christopher le quedaban nueve meses en el ejército y después quería ser bombero o policía.

Mientras tanto, el abogado de Jurado ha disputado el relato del incidente.

“Parece que estaba siendo atacado y estaba en el piso y lo estaban pateando en la espalda, el estómago, la cabeza y esto es consistente con las heridas que he visto”, dijo el abogado. “Se dice que es en ese momento en que el Sr. Sullivan fue impactado por los disparos”.

El abogado dijo que no iba a hacer más comentarios al respecto antes de hablar con su cliente y el fiscal del caso.

SAN BERNARDINO, CALIFORNIA – Police have arrested a 19-yar-old man, who allegedly shot and severely injured a U.S. soldier who was on holiday leave with his family after surviving a suicide attack in Afghanistan.

San Bernardino Police said Ruben Ray Jurado turned himself in to authorities in Chino Hills, about 35 miles east of Los Angeles, on Dec. 26. He was charged with attempted murder and multiple sentencing enhancements for using a firearm.

Jurado was charged in connection with a Dec. 23 shooting that critically wounded Christopher Sullivan, 22, a Purple Heart recipient.

According to authorities, Jurado, who had played football

in high school with Sullivan, was arguing with Sullivan’s brother about football during a homecoming party for the soldier on Dec. 23. During the altercation Jurado punched Sullivan’s brother. Christopher Sullivan intervened to stop the fight and Jurado pulled a gun and fired multiple shots, hitting Christopher in the neck.

Relatives said Christopher remains in critical condition at the hospital. Doctors said the gunfire shattered his spine and left him paralyzed from the neck down.

Sullivan was wounded in a suicide bombing attack last year in Kandahar province while serving with the 101st Infantry Division. He suffered a cracked collarbone and brain damage in the attack and had been recovering in Kentucky, where he is stationed.

He was on home leave when the shooting happened.According to his brother, Christopher had nine months to

go in the military, then he planned on becoming a firefighter or police officer.

Meanwhile an attorney for Jurado has disputed the account of the incident.

“It appears that he was being attacked and he was on the ground and was being kicked in the back, stomach, the head, and that is consistent with the injuries that I observed,” the attorney said. “It is alleged at that point that Mr. Sullivan was shot.”

The attorney said he would not make any more comments on the case until he had talked to his client and the district attorney.

MEXICO CITY – Law enforcement agencies in California, Arizona, New Mexico and Texas have requested military training and equipment to the federal government in order to face the threat of Mexican drug cartels.

According to El Universal newspaper, information gathered from DEA, the Pentagon and the Department of Homeland Security reveals that local police agencies in those states have purchased armored vehicles, M-16 and M-14 weapons and grenade launchers to add to their arsenal. They have also requested unmanned drones and are getting

some help from the Department of Defense.According to information from DHS, police in Tyler,

Texas is now using armored all-terrain vehicles to transport personnel. These vehicles are capable of repelling gunfire from AK-47 rifles.

Steve McCraw, director of the Texas Department of Public Safety, said that “the Mexican drug cartels are using military tactics, even inside the United States,” and that their capabilities are “normally associated with those used by military organizations, including the coordination of tactic operations, use of automatic weapons, grenades, trend analysis, secure communications and interceptions.”

There is information that the Border Patrol will receive equipment donated by the Pentagon. Most of this equipment will be used in operations against drug cartels and terrorists.

Meanwhile, a new unmanned drone will be put to use in Arizona, to track drug smugglers and undocumented immigrants that cross the border.

The Predator-B plane will be based at the National Air Security Operations Center in Sierra Vista, a few miles north of the Mexican border in southeast Arizona.

This is the sixth plane of its kind to be deployed in the Mexico-U.S. border.

FORT WAYNE, INDIANA – Una niña de 9 años de Indiana fue asesinada por el hombre que la cuidada mientras su madre se recuperaba de la influenza, de acuerdo con información de la policía.

El hombre, Michael L. Plumadore, de 39 años de edad enfrenta un cargo de asesinato en la muerte de Aliahna Lemmon, cuyos restos fueron encontrados la noche del 26 de diciembre .Ella había desaparecido el 23 de este mes.

Plumadore, quien es descrito como un amigo de la familia de la víctima, aparentemente dijo a la policía que había golpeado la cabeza de la niña con un ladrillo, había desmembrado su cuerpo y había guardado partes en el congelador de su casa.

En los documentos presentados en la corte, la oficina del alguacil del Condado Allen dijo que Plumadore había admitido que había golpeado a la niña varias veces en la cabeza con un ladrillo, mientras ellas estaba en los escalones de su casa móvil, la madrugada del 22 de diciembre.

FORT WAYNE, INDIANA – A nine-year-old Indiana girl was killed by the man who was taking care of her while her mother was sick with the flue, according to police reports.

The man, Michel L. Plumadore, 39, faces one count of murder in the death of Aliahna Lemmon, whose remains were found the night of Dec. 26. She had disappeared on Dec. 23.

Plumadore, who was described as a friend of the victim’s family, allegedly told police that he had hit the girl in the head with a brick, had dismembered her body and had saved some body parts in his home’s freezer.

The documents introduced in court state that the Plumadore admitted to Allen County Sheriff’s officers that he had hit the girl several times in the head while she was standing on the front steps of his mobile home in the early hours of Dec. 22.

According to court documents, the man kept the girl’s body in plastic bags in the freezer and that night he started dismembering it.

The man allegedly told authorities he had thrown several body parts in a trash container in a commercial area nearby, but that he had kept the head, hands and feet in his freezer.

Authorities didn’t reveal the motive for the murder or the autopsy results.

Aliahna’s story, Amber Story, said Plumadore was a neighbor and

close family friend.Story said that Aliahna and her

two sisters were staying under Plumadore’s case for about a week because her mother was sick with the flu.

Before the arrest was announced, Story said she believed the girl had been taken when she had walked out of Plumadore’s home while sleepwalking.

However, authorities found inconsistencies with Plumadore’s version, and interrogated him for several hours before he confessed.

“Some of the story that we heard from the beginning with him led us to believe he was the key to this case, that … he was the one who was going to have the answers we were looking for,” Allen County Sheriff Ken Fries told HLN.

“It was very factual when he started telling them what happened. And they just had to sit there and listen to him as if they were just listening to a story with no emotion, just trying to get him to say more and more and more,” Fries said of the confession.

Meanwhile, it has come up that Plumadore is wanted in Florida for violating probation in 2000.

Apparently he was charged with battery on a law enforcement officer, firefighter or EMS worker in May 2000 and later sentenced to a year of community supervision, but he didn’t report to his probation officer and didn’t attend a court-ordered anger management class.

MORELIA, MICHOACAN – A regional electoral body has decided that the elections held in Morelia, Michoacan were flawed and they have been annulled.

In the Nov. 13 elections the PRI-PVEM candidate, Wilfrido Lazaro Medina, was elected mayor of Morelia, the capital of the state of Michoacan. However, candidates from other parties filed complaints about irregularities during the electoral process, asking for an annulment.

The Regional Chamber of the Federal Electoral Tribunal (TEPJF) issued the determination to conduct new elections Dec. 28.

The main challenger to the election results was Marko Cortes, candidate for the PAN-Nueva Alianza party.

The head of the Michoacan Electoral Institute (IEM) Angeles Yanderal Zaragoza, said new elections have to take place in a maximum of 150 days, but it could be sooner.

The ruling by the TEPJF can still be appealed by the PRI candidate,

which has said that will not appeal the decision.

In a written statement PRI officials stated that while they dispute the decision made by the TEPJF, they will abide by that decision and asked for extraordinary elections to be held as soon as possible.

Once the TEPJF issues a final determination, the IEM then has up to 30 days to issue a calling for candidates to register for the extraordinary elections.

When a final determination of annulment of elections is issued, the State Congress could name an interim head of government for the municipality of Morelia while the new elections are held.

The challenges to the election results alleged that the winning candidate had used electronic media for political propaganda at a time when political parties were prohibited by law to continue campaigning. Also mentioned was the use of boxing shorts with the PRI logo by boxer Juan Manuel Marquez during a nationally televised boxing match one day before the elections in Michoacan.

Los que se quejaron de los resultados electoras dijeron que el candidato ganador había usado medios electrónicos de comunicación para hacerse propaganda en un periodo de tiempo prohibido por la ley. También mencionaron que los calzoncillos de boxeo utilizados por el boxeador Juan Manuel Márquez durante una pelea televisada a nivel nacional el día antes de las elecciones de Michoacán era propaganda política. Los calzoncillos portaban el logotipo del PRI.

Pedro Armendariz Pardo was born April 6, 1940 in Mexico City, the son of Mexican movie star Pedro Armendariz and actress Carmelita Pardo.

He studied architecture and worked in the field for a while until he started acting in 1965, when he participated in the movie “The Pup”. He then continued acting in several movies during the 1960s and 1970s.

He made a good part of his career in the United States, where he participated in movies and TV series, including “River of Gold”, “Killer by Night”, “Earthquake”, “and “A Home of Our Own”.

He was a prominent figure in the Mexican cinema of the 1990s, participating in movies like “Long Road to Tijuana”, “Only with your Partner”, “Esmeralda, You Come by Night,” “Herod’s Law” and “The Crime of Father Amaro.” He intervened in over 140 movies.

His participation in Mexican TV was also memorable. “The Set Hour” and “Furcio” were two TV series where he participated. He also intervened in popular soap operas, including “The Last Hope”, “The Other’s Shadow”, “Three Women”, “Serafin”, “Amy, the Girl with the Blue Backpack” and “Love Overflowing”.
