La cultura maya fue heredera de los logros yavances de las culturas zapoteca y olmeca. EnChiapas, los mayas se establecieron y fundarongrandes ciudades, legado del florecimiento de unacultura organizada en clases sociales jerrquicasque gobernaban ciudades independientes dentrode un mismo imperio. A partir del declive de estagran cultura, las ciudades fueron abandonadasy los indgenas chiapanecos se apoderaron delterritorio, subyugando a otras civilizacionesprehispnicas de la regin como los zoques,mames y tzeltales.

En 1521, los conquistadores que controlaban laVilla del Espritu Santo en Coatzacoalcos, iniciaronla expedicin para conquistar tierras chiapanecas.El primer intento fue un fracaso gracias a laferocidad de los guerreros chiapanecos, perocuando el espaol Diego de Mazariegos arrib conun ejrcito mejor organizado, estableci la VillaReal de Chiapas, hoy San Cristbal de Las Casas. Losevangelizadores dominicos se establecieron en1535 y comenzaron a construir conventos, educara los indgenas y fundar villas.

The Mayan culture inherited the achievements and

advances made by the Zapotec and Olmec cultures.

The Maya settled in Chiapas and founded great cities,

resulting in the flourishing of a society organized in

hierarchical social classes that governed independent

cities within a single empire. With the decline of this

great culture, the cities were abandoned, and the

indigenous Chiapans took power over the territory,

subjugating other pre-Hispanic peoples in the region,

such as the Zoques, Mames and Tzeltales.

In 1521, the conquistadors who controlled Villa

del Espritu Santo in Coatzacoalcos set out on an

expedition to conquer the lands of Chiapas. The first

attempt ended in failure due to the ferocity of the

Chiapas warriors, but when the Spaniard Diego de

Mazariegos arrived with a better-organized army he

was able to establish the Villa Real de Chiapas, today

San Cristbal de Las Casas. Dominican evangelists

set up here in 1535 and began to build monasteries,

educate the indigenous people and founded villages.

Durante la guerra de independencia mexicana,Chiapas no participa. La regin del Soconuscoes controlada por el gobierno centroamericanointermitentemente hasta 1842 cuando elentonces Presidente de Mxico, Antonio Lpez deSanta Anna, emite en decreto su anexin definitivaa nuestro pas. El resto de la entidad se proclamen 1823, como territorio independiente tanto deMxico como de Guatemala; pero al ao siguiente,sus habitantes votaron por pertenecer de nuevo ala jurisdiccin mexicana.

A pesar de la abolicin de la esclavitud y de lalucha de los misioneros evangelizadores por losderechos indgenas, los miembros de las diversasetnias eran considerados por la sociedad colonialcomo ciudadanos de segunda clase y eran objetode abusos constantes. Debido a esto, en 1869 lostzotziles radicados en San Cristbal de Las Casas,se levantan en armas contra la injusticia de queson objeto y recuperan su derecho a la tierra. Aeste enfrentamiento se le conoce como la Guerrade las Castas.

Hasta este momento, San Cristbal era la capitaldel territorio chiapaneco; sin embargo en 1892, elgobernador Emilio Rabasa cambia la sede del poderestatal a Tuxtla Gutirrez. En 1911, los habitantesde la antigua capital chiapaneca se pronuncian afavor de retomar la designacin de capital. En lasdcadas siguientes, el estado continu su procesohacia la modernizacin.

Chiapas did not participate in the War of Mexican

Independence. The Soconusco region wasintermittently controlled by the Central American

government up until 1842 when then-president

Antonio Lpez de Santa Anna emitted a decree that

definitively annexed it to Mexico. In 1823 the whole

state declared itself an independent territory from

both Mexico and Guatemala.

The following year, however, the inhabitants voted

to rejoin the jurisdiction of Mexico. Despite the

abolition of slavery and the missionaries struggle

for indigenous peoples rights, the members of the

various ethnic groups were considered second-

class citizens by colonial society and were subject

to constant abuses. This led, in 1869, the Tzotzil

people living in San Cristbal de Las Casas to rise up

against the injustices they suffered and to regain

the rights to their land. This confrontation is known

as the Caste War.

Up until then, San Cristbal had been the capital ofthe territory; however in 1892, the governor Emilio

Rabasa changed the seat of state power to Tuxtla

Gutirrez. In 1911, the inhabitants of the ancient

capital voted in favor of regaining its former status.

Over the following decades, the state continued its

progress towards modernization.

The name Chiapas comes from the word Chiapan

or Tepechiapan, the term used to refer to the former

indigenous population, and which means Peak of

Chia or Water under the Peak. The conquistadors,

upon founding two cities in the region, Chiapa de

los Indios and Chiapa de los Espaoles, adopted the

Province of Chiapas as a name for both.

Chiapas is home to the highest concentration of animal

species in all of Latin America, many of them on view in

the the Tuxtla Gutirrez zoo Miguel Alvare z del Toro.

The rains last for six months, which means that the

state is covered in rich vegetation through which itsoverflowing rivers wind. One of the greatest rivers is

the Grijalva, which can be toured by boat against the

backdrop of the Sumidero Canyon, the walls of which

reach over 3,000 feet.

Chiapas is one of the states with the greatest variety of

handicrafts in Mexico due to the great ethnic diversity

in the region which is reflected in villages proud of

their origins. This is complemented by the wealth of

materials native to the state, from woods and plants

such as cedar, mahogany, pine, agave, bamboo grass

and rattan to minerals such as jade and resins such

as amber. Over centuries, the indigenous people

developed fine skills in creating products for use

in everyday life that are full of color, such as plates,

jugs, furniture, musical instruments, embroideries and

weavings.

For centuries Chiapas has lived alongside the music

of the marimbas. When the Spanish arrived in the

16th century, the indigenous people already played

music using wooden instruments, and their repertory

was broadened by the arrival of African slaves, who

introduced the marimba. Nowadays this pleasant

music can be heard in the afternoons around the

pavilions of Tuxtla Gutirrez and San Cristbal de Las

Casas.

La milenaria herencia de las antiguas ciudadesdel imperio maya y los innumerables templos,as como edificaciones y conventos construidosdurante el Virreinato, convergen en Chiapas. Lasconstrucciones coloniales tienen el sello distintivode los misioneros dominicos procedentes deSevilla, Espaa, ciudad que estuvo ocupada porlos rabes por ocho siglos, lo cual explica la grancantidad de diseos moriscos trazados en cadadetalle de las fachadas virreinales que datan delos siglos XVI al XVIII, que combinan con diseosindgenas de las distintas regiones de la selva y lasierra.

Chiapas preserves a great number of centuries-old

buildings: on the one hand the ancient heritage of

the cities of the Mayan empire, and on the other thecountless churches, monasteries and civic buildings

constructed during the colonial period. These

constructions have the distinctive stamp of the

Dominican missionaries who arrived from Seville, Spain,

a city occupied by the Arabs for eight centuries. This

explains the great number of Moorish details found in

the designs of the colonial facades, which mingle with

indigenous designs from the distinct regions of the

jungle and the mountains.

San Cristbal de Las Casas es prueba viva del crisolcultural que Chiapas es. San Cristbal de Las Casas is living proof of the

cultural crucible that is Chiapas. In its streets and

17th-century buildings, the indigenous people of

Chiapas live alongside mestizos in a situation of ever-

greater harmony and coexistence. This attractive

city is a meeting point for various ethnic groups from

around the state who have not forgotten their ancient

handicraft techniques, which range from the brightly-

colored Mayan textiles to ceramics and wrought iron,

and to the production of finely made amber and

filigree silver pieces.

Tourism is one of the leading industries, which has

been developed thanks to the warmth of its people and

based on the citys incomparable architecture which

preserves near-intact images of the past, therefore

Con un clima predominante semiclido subhmedo,con lluvias en verano, este municipio se encuentrasituado en la parte sur de la meseta Comiteca,pertenece a la zona del Grijalva y es un municipiofronterizo con Guatemala.

Es famosa por tener algunos de los atractivosnaturales ms bellos de Chiapas, entre los quedestacan el parque Nacional Lagunas de Montebelloy los fastuosos Lagos de Coln; tambin por susvestigios arqueolgicos, destacando la ZonaArqueolgica de Chinkultic.

This municipality, with a predominant semi-

warm sub-humid climate and summer rains,

is located in the southern part of the plateau

Comiteca. It belongs to the zone of Grijalva, andit borders with Guatemala.

La creacin deTapachula, propiamente dicho, no se da hasta lapoca de los aztecas, cuando en 1486 esta villase funda como un pueblo tributario del imperio.Durante este perodo, Tapachula se desarrollcomo un gran centro de comercio, convirtindolaen una importante ciudad durante gran parte de lapoca prehispnica. Desde un inicio estas tierrasfueron de mucho inters para los espaoles debidoa sus riquezas naturales y excelente ubicacin. Espor ello que Hernn Corts envi a estas tierras aPedro de Alvarado, en 1524, para colonizarlas.

Tapachula is the capital of one of the most important

municipalities in Chiapas. It is located between the

Sierra Madre and the coastal plains of the Pacific,

making it an obligatory point of passage for trade

with Central America. The creation of Tapachula proper

did not come about until the time of the Aztecs, when

in 1486 the town was founded as a tributary of the

empire, and it quickly developed into an important

center of trade. From the beginning, these lands were

of great interest to the Spanish due to their natural

resources and strategic location. For this reason

Hernan Cortes sent Pedro de Alvarado to the region in

1524 in order to colonize it.

The house was built in the early eighteenth century with adobe walls covered with

mortar, brick floors lined with stone and a wooden roof with tiles. Its main hall is

marked by large wooden arches supported by wooden columns made with stone

foundations. Both the central part and the annexes of the house have been preservedwith real care and attention.

Within the old basement is the cellar Molino de la Pera (Pear Mill) which offers a

perfect temperature and humidity to over two hundred wine bottles of different labels.
