THE PRAYERS OF THE ROSARY

Apostles' Creed I believe in God, the Father almighty, Creator of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and life everlasting. Amen.

Our Father Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Amen.

Hail Mary Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee. Blessed art thou among women and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Amen.

Glory Be Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

Luminous mysteries: 1) Jesus is baptized in the Jordan, 2) Jesus’ self-manifestation at the wedding in Cana, 3) Jesus proclaims the kingdom of God, 4) Jesus’ Transfiguration, 5) Jesus institutes the Eucharist as the sacramental expression of the paschal mystery.

Hail, Holy Queen Hail, holy Queen, mother of mercy, our life, our sweetness and our hope. To you do we cry, poor banished children of Eve. To you do we send up our sighs, mourning and weeping from this valley of tears. Turn, then, most gracious advocate, your eyes of mercy towards us, and after this our exile, show to us the blessed fruit of your womb, Jesus. 0 Clement, 0 Loving, 0 sweet Virgin Mary.

Prayer after the Rosary o God, whose only-begotten Son, by his life, death, and resurrection has purchased for us the rewards of eternal life, grant, we beseech you, that we who meditate upon these mysteries of the most holy rosary of the Blessed Virgin Mary, may imitate what they contain and obtain what they promise. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.

THE STORY The story of Our Lady of Guadalupe begins in the early morning hours of Dec. 9, 1531, while an Indigenous man named Juan Diego was on his way to Mass and to continue his studies of the Christian faith. When he reached the top of a hill called Tepeyac he suddenly heard the strains of beautiful music. Juan Diego thought at first that he had gone to heaven or was in some kind of paradise, because to him, as to other Indigenous peoples of Mexico, music was a symbol of the divine, of the gods. The Indigenous peoples felt that words could not adequately communicate the concept of god, so they represented the gods instead through music, singing, and other arts. Artists, they felt, had hearts that carried something of the divine, that

made god visible to the world.

SOMETHING SPECIAL So when Juan Diego heard that beautiful music he knew he was in the presence

of someonespecial. And he asked himself: "How can I be worthy of what I am hearing?" Soon he heard a voice calling to him: "Juanito, Juan Dieguito." Those were the

affectionate terms for his name, similar to what a mother might use in speaking to a child. Our Lady then appeared to him and asked where he was going. Juan Diego told her he was going to church for mass. And Our Lady then told him that she desired a temple to be built there in her honor.

She went on to tell Juan Diego that she was the "Holy Mary Ever Virgin Mother of the True God ... a merciful Mother...to all... I listen to their lamentations and solace all their sorrows and their sufferings." Our Blessed Mother then told Juan Diego to go to the palace of the bishop of Mexico and tell him that she wanted a temple built there in the valley.

Juan Diego then went to see Fray Juan de Zumarraga, a Franciscan and bishop of Mexico. After much waiting, he finally was able to see the bishop, and told him of the Blessed Mother's desire. The bishop, however, did not believe Juan's story at that time and asked him to return a few days later after he had time to study the matter - and to investigate Juan Diego.

CALLED AND SENT: JUAN DIEGO THE EVANGELIZER Juan Diego felt frustrated and made his way back to the hill of Tepeyac never

doubting that he would see Our Lady again. When he saw her he told her that the bishop had not believed him; but Our Lady again told Juan to return to the bishop to tell him again of her desire.

Juan Diego promised that he would, and the next day, December 10, after Mass, he again went to see the bishop. Again, after much difficulty, he eventually succeeded in getting to the bishop, repeating the message from Our Blessed Mother.

This time the bishop was more inclined to trust Juan, but nevertheless told him that he would have to bring some sign as proof that the woman he had seen was the Blessed Mother.

Juan returned to the hill of Tepeyac, where he told the Virgin of the bishop's request. Juan Diego felt frustrated that he could not accomplish what the Blessed Mother requested. On his knees he begged her to send someone else because he was a “nobody.” He requested that she sent someone more important so that the bishop would pay attention to that person.

The Blessed Mother bends down and picks Juan Diego up. She tells him that she can send legions of angels, but that she has chosen him to go to the bishop. What this world rejects, God choses to do God’s great work. Now Juan Diego is standing up with dignity and pride. He is an evangelizer sent by the Blessed Mother to do God’s work.

A MIRACLE OF HEALING AND THE SIGNOur Blessed Mother of Guadalupe told Juan Diego to return the next day and

then she would give him the sign for the bishop. But the next day, December 11th, Juan Diego had to care for his dying uncle, Juan Bernardino, who near day's end asked him to get a priest so that he could go to Reconciliation (Confession) and receive the Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick.

Very early the following day, December 12th, Juan Diego set out to get a priest, but tried to avoid the hilltop of Tepeyac because he was ashamed at not having returned to the spot the previous day as Our Lady had told him. But as he was taking a roundabout route Our Lady came down from the top of the hill and again asked him where he was going. Juan told her of his uncle's illness and that he had felt the need to care for him.

Our Lady, however, assured him that his uncle would not die, and Juan renewed his offer to go to the bishop with any sign she would give. The first miracle in the Americas was a miracle of healing, through the intercession of Our Lady of Guadalupe.

FLOWERS Our Lady of Guadalupe instructed Juan Diego to go to the top of the hill and

gather the flowers there as a sign for the bishop. When Juan reached the summit he

5

Page 6: TEPEYAC INSTITUTE€¦  · Web viewDel cielo ha bajado la Madre de Dios, cantemos el aye a su concepcion. Ave, ave, ave. Maria, Ave, ave, Maria. Oh virgen sin mancha, oh Madre de

found many roses blooming there. He picked the roses and placed them in his tilma, or cloak.

The Blessed Mother then told Juan Diego to take them to the bishop as a sign he requested. Juan Diego did as Guadalupe request. When he was with the bishop he repeated The Blessed Mother’s message and said he had brought the sign he wanted from the Blessed Mother. He then unfolded his tilma, and the roses came tumbling out. But the bishop, seemingly overwhelmed by something even greater than the miracle of the roses, got up from his throne, knelt before the tilma, and began praying. Our Lady of Guadalupe miraculously transformed the roses into an image of herself on the tilma. This sacred tilma still hangs today in the Basilica de Guadalupe in Mexico City on Tepeyac hill.

THE IMAGE A shrine of adobe was then erected at that sight, in time for Christmas. A

number of churches have held the famed Image of Our Lady of Guadalupe throughout the four centuries since the apparition. A huge new shrine was dedicated to her near the site where Juan Diego first saw her, and since that time also she has been proclaimed the Empress of the Americas, a patron for everyone, because when she appeared there were no national boundaries separating countries in his hemisphere. To this day, it is the most visited shrine in the world.

THE MESSAGE The appearance of Our Lady of Guadalupe at Tepeyac over 450 years ago was

not an isolated event intended only for the indigenous of the Mexico. She is just as important today as she was centuries ago, and she is important for everyone, for she has been designated the patroness of all the Americas. When she appeared to Saint Juan Diego in December 1531, there were no national boundaries in this hemisphere. The Rio Grande River, for example, was not a boundary separating the United States and Mexico.

The Blessed Mother of Guadalupe announces he coming of her Son Jesus Christ and the coming of his reign among us. The temple she requested is made of living stones more than of brick and concrete. This temple is the place where no one will ever have to say like Saint Juan Diego said, “I am a nobody.” Guadalupe is asking us to foster the reign of God by building a temple, a people, a civilization in which all men and women are treated with dignity and respect.

NEW ERA When Our Lady of Guadalupe appeared on the hill of Tepeyac she heralded the

beginning of a new era, a new civilization that would rise out of the ashes of the Indigenous civilizations that had been destroyed by the Spanish conquerors. She gave birth to a new people - the Mestizo people.

But her significance goes beyond that, because she is the patroness of all Americas. She also came to give birth to a renewed Christianity, through Saint Juan

6

Page 7: TEPEYAC INSTITUTE€¦  · Web viewDel cielo ha bajado la Madre de Dios, cantemos el aye a su concepcion. Ave, ave, ave. Maria, Ave, ave, Maria. Oh virgen sin mancha, oh Madre de

Diego the great apostle of Christianity in the Americas. She came to help us evangelize society.

Guadalupe stands as a symbol of unity for all those struggling to leave a state of oppression to enter the state of being free human beings. She is a mother, as she told Juan Diego, who is here to right the wrongs of her children, a mother who has heard the cry of her children and comes to remedy what is wrong, a mother who is with us in our struggle to liberate ourselves from sin and oppression. The significance and importance of the apparition of Our Lady of Guadalupe is derived especially from the period of time in which she appeared.

In the pre-Hispanic New World, the Indigenous had many gods, or "intermediary spirits," but there was one great spirit, or god beyond all the intermediary gods named Omecihuatl. That god, whose special color was turquoise, the predominant color of Our Lady of Guadalupe's mantle, was considered the one, powerful creating force. That god was neither male, nor female, sometimes being represented by a male figure and sometimes by a female.

The female figure of the supreme god was also known as the snake woman, a symbol of wisdom because the snake was a symbol of wisdom. That figure was also called Tonantzin, and represented a respected, loving mother.

SACRED SITE The hill of Tepeyac, where Our Lady of Guadalupe appeared to Saint Juan Diego,

was a sacred site, a place of pilgrimage even before the Spaniards and Christianity came. Tonantzin was venerated there as the mother of gods, the source of life, as a god who gave meaning, direction, and guidance to all life.

The relatively easy conquest of Mexico by the Spaniards was, in a sense, made possible for them by the Indigenous themselves. Amerindian prophets had long been predicting the end of their civilization, the end of their era. And in addition, many other Indigenous peoples disliked the Aztecs and felt that they had corrupted their religion, but that the god Quetzacoatl would return or send an emissary to bring them liberation and salvation.

So when the Spaniards arrived under Hernando Córtes many Indians accepted the conquerors as liberators or saviors and allied themselves with the conquistadores.

NOT LIBERATORS But most Indigenous peoples soon saw that the Spaniards were not the expected

liberators of Quetzacoatl. They had no scruples in killing people - either in battle or simply to gain gold. In their conquest of the New World the Spaniards destroyed the temples of the Indigenous peoples, killed many of the young men, and often violated the women.

At the time of the four apparitions of Our Lady of Guadalupe, between December 9 and December 12, 1531, memories of the conquest - the massacres, the destruction of the temples were still very much alive in the minds of the Indigenous peoples. They did not miss the important significance that Our Lady of Guadalupe,

7

Page 8: TEPEYAC INSTITUTE€¦  · Web viewDel cielo ha bajado la Madre de Dios, cantemos el aye a su concepcion. Ave, ave, ave. Maria, Ave, ave, Maria. Oh virgen sin mancha, oh Madre de

through an Indian, one of their own, had ordered the Spaniards - represented by Bishop Juan Zumarraga- what to do, to build a temple in her honor, to someone who resembled the Indian and not the Spaniard.

BUILD TEMPLE The site where the temple should be built also had great significance to the

Indigenous because it was the place where they had worshiped the mother of gods. Also, when Our Lady of Guadalupe appeared, she described herself as the Mother of the True God, of the one who created heaven and earth So the Virgin who appeared at Tepeyac was associated with motherhood, with birth, with new life.

Their old life, their old civilization, an era, had ended - their temples, their previous way of life destroyed - and Our Lady of Guadalupe was bringing forth new life, a new people, a new era, and a new civilization.

Many Missionaries felt the need for a radical return to the Gospel, for a renewal in Christianity. They saw Our Lady of Guadalupe as a source of that new beginning and a renewal in Christianity in the New World.

Guadalupe is Mestiza, the mixture of Indigenous, Spanish, African bloods. While the tilma is in the famous Basilica de Guadalupe in Mexico City, she is more than the Mexican Virgin. She is the Patroness of the Americas. She belongs to all of us.

Image of Our Lady of Guadalupe

The 450-year-old Image of Our Lady of Guadalupe is more than simply a picture. It contains symbols - in a sense, hieroglyphics, or a story in pictures - that reveal part of the message the Blessed Mother brought through Saint Juan Diego to the Indigenous peoples of Mexico and to all the people of the Americas. But the symbols had a special meaning to the Indigenous peoples, who because of their culture could decipher the code in the SacredImage.

1. EYES The eyes of the Image are looking

down, a position of humility, revealing that, as great as she is, she is not a god. Indian gods never looked down; they looked straight ahead. She points to someone higher than herself.

2. FACE The woman's face shows great

compassion. The Indians felt that the face was the window of the inner person, a means by which one could read who a person was - the way a person would act. A good woman to the Indigenous was one whose femininity showed in her face. The head of the woman in the Image shows her with dark skin and dark hair like that of the Indigenous. Our Lady of Guadalupe is Mestiza (Bl. John Paul II called her this), a mixture of Indigenous, Spanish and African bloods.

3. HANDS Her hands are not poised in the traditional Western European style of prayer,

but in an Indigenous manner of offering, indicating that something is being offered, that something is to come from her.

4. MATERNITY BAND One of the most significant signs of this image is her maturity band. It is around

her waist as the sign of a pregnant woman, a mother who is about to give birth. It was a sign to the Indigenous peoples that someone is yet to come. We now know that Guadalupe was brining us Jesus Christ, savior of the world.

9

Page 10: TEPEYAC INSTITUTE€¦  · Web viewDel cielo ha bajado la Madre de Dios, cantemos el aye a su concepcion. Ave, ave, ave. Maria, Ave, ave, Maria. Oh virgen sin mancha, oh Madre de

5. STARS The stars on the mantle are a sign that a new civilization, or era, is beginning.

The Indigenous tradition recognized the end and the beginning of different eras throughout the ages, and the destruction of a particular civilization or era was always accompanied by a comet, or a body of stars. Indian prophets even before the arrival and conquest by the Spaniard Hernán Cortes had been predicting the end of their civilization at that time. Guadalupe in her mantle announces the coming a of a new age of Christ in the Americas.

6. SUN RAYS The rays of sun in the Image recalled for the Indians that the sun played a key role in their civilization. But the woman in the Image is greater than even the sun. She hides the sun, and only the rays come forth. She hides the sun but does not extinguish it. Guadalupe does not come to destroy a people, but to point to a new way to live the reign of God among us.

7. MANTLE The predominant color in the Image's mantle is turquoise, the blue-green color reserved for the great god Omecihuatl. Although the Indigenous had many "intermediary gods," Omecihuatl was considered the supreme god. It was a mother-father god who sometimes was represented as a man and sometimes as a woman. It was a source of unity for everything that exists. Guadalupe comes in royal colors because she comes to announce someone even more important than all the gods the Indigenous knew.

8. MOON The woman is standing of the moon, indicating that she is greater than the god of night, the moon god.
