Sistema de ingeniería en red para la actualizar la disponibilidadde servicios de redes de malla ópticaPublicada el 20/03/2015

Publication date: 20 March 2015. Source: Optical Fiber TechnologyAuthor(s): Hung-Yi Chang , Pi-Chung Wang. We present a networkengineering process to improve service availability of optical meshnetworks by employing protection links. In the existing optical meshnetworks, high service availability is usually achieved by network planningwith an appropriate routing and wavelength assignment (RWA) algorithm. However, network planning cannot provide upgrade paths forunpredictable new demands. To meet the requirements of practicaloperations, a network engineering process is developed to improve serviceavailability in an upgrade manner. A model of integer linear programming(ILP) is proposed to minimize the upgrade cost. In addition, heuristicmethods for calculating the sequence of incrementally installing protectionlinks are presented. Our experimental results show that the proposednetwork engineering process can improve service availability with low cost. They also demonstrate that the network engineering process can excludethe necessity of a routing algorithm optimized for service availabilitybecause such an algorithm usually results in higher upgrade cost thanthose optimized for path length or link load.

Estimación asistida por visión de la actitud, velocidad y sesgode medición inercial para la estabilización de vehículos aéreosno tripuladosPublicada el 10/02/2015

Abstract This paper studies vision-aided inertial navigation of small-scale unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) inGPS-denied environments. The objectives of the navigation system are to firstly online estimate andcompensate the unknown inertial measurement biases, secondly provide drift-free velocity and attitudeestimates which are crucial for UAV stabilization control, and thirdly give relatively accurate position estimationsuch that the UAV is able to perform at least a short-term navigation when the GPS signal is not available. Forthe vision system, we do not presume maps or landmarks of the environment. The vision system should beable to work robustly even given low-resolution images (e.g., 160 ×120 pixels) of near homogeneous visualfeatures. To achieve these objectives, we propose a novel homography-based vision-aided navigation systemthat adopts four common sensors: a low-cost inertial measurement unit, a downward-looking monocularcamera, a barometer, and a compass. The measurements of the sensors are fused by an extended Kalmanfilter. Based on both analytical and numerical observability analyses of the navigation system, we theoreticallyverify that the proposed navigation system is able to achieve the navigation objectives. We also showcomprehensive simulation and real flight experimental results to verify the effectiveness and robustness of theproposed navigation system.

Modelado de circuitos equivalentes de las características deconducción biestable en láminas dieléctricas electroformadasPublicada el 01/01/2015

Publication date: January 2015. Source: Microelectronics Reliability,Volume 55. Author(s): J. Blasco , N. Ghenzi , J. Suñé , P. Levy , E.Miranda. In the last few years a number of models based on simplecircuital representations have been proposed to account for the resistives w i t c h i n g ( R S ) c u r r e n t – v o l t a g e ( I – V ) c h a r a c t e r i s t i c s o fmetal–insulator–metal (MIM) structures. These devices typically exhibit twowell-defined conduction levels after electroforming often referred to as thelow and high resistance states that can be cyclically reached by theapplication of bipolar periodic voltage or current. The resulting hystereticbehavior arises from a reversible change of the electron transmissionproperties of the insulating film driven by an external stimulus. In thispaper, after an overview of a variety of RS model proposals relying oncircuital descriptions and basic analytic expressions, a model based on thesolution of the generalized diode equation is discussed. The model issimple and flexible and consists of two opposite-biased diodes with seriesand shunt resistances that represent the filamentary current pathwayspanning the oxide layer as well as the possible parasitic effects. Themodel parameters are governed by a mathematical entity called the logistichysteron that can be linked to the internal state equation of the so-calledmemristive systems. For illustrative purposes, the switching I – Vcharacteristics of TiO2-based MIM structures electroformed with differentcurrent compliances are examined in detail using this approach.Experimental results on bipolar RS by other authors are also assessedwithin the same framework.

Criptografía de imágenes dactilares basada en sistemascaóticos múltiplesPublicada el 09/02/2015

Publication date: 9 February 2015. Source: Signal Processing Author(s):Hung-I Hsiao , Junghsi Lee. This paper presents a new multiple chaos-based biometric image cryptosystem for fingerprint security. Thisencryption algorithm is constructed with four chaotic systems, whichconsist of two 1-D and two high-dimensional 3-D chaotic systems. Thisalgorithm enhances the security strength of biometric image cryptographythat incorporates single chaos and multiple 1-D chaotic systems. Theadvantage of the proposed scheme is that it possesses a secret key spacelarge enough to empower the security strength to protect fingerprint image, which is enough to prevent any brute-force attacks. Furthermore, thisalgorithm has passed the NIST SP 800-22a tests and security analyses, which confirms that the proposed scheme is a secure cryptographicsystem.

Arquitectura de sistema computacional que proporciona unainterfaz usuario-máquina amigable para el acceso a latecnología asistencial en la computación en nubePublicada el 01/02/2015

Publication date: February 2015. Source: Journal of Systems andSoftware, Volume 100. Author(s): Davide Mulfari , Antonio Celesti ,Massimo Villari. Assistive Technology (AT) includes hardware peripherals, software applications and systems that enable a user with a disability touse a PC. Thus, when a disabled user needs to work in a particularenvironment (e.g., at work, at school, in a government office, etc.) he/shehas to properly configure the used PC. However, often, the configuration ofAT software interfaces is not trivial at all. This paper presents the softwaredesign, implementation, and evaluation of a computer system architectureproviding a software user-friendly man machine interface for accessing ATsoftware in cloud computing. The main objective of such an architecture isto provide a new type of software human–computer interaction foraccessing AT services over the cloud. Thus, end users can interact withtheir personalized computer environments using any physical networkedPC. The advantage of this approach is that users do not have to installand/or setup any additional software on physical PCs and they can accesstheir own AT virtual environments from everywhere. In particular, theusability of prototype based on the Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) isevaluated in both private and public cloud scenarios.

SECO: Servicios de colaboración de datos seguros y escalablespara la computación en nubePublicada el 28/01/2015

Publication date: 28 January 201.5 Source: Computers & SecurityAuthor(s): Xin Dong , Jiadi Yu , Yanmin Zhu , Yingying Chen , Yuan Luo ,Minglu Li. Cloud storage services enable users to remotely store their dataand eliminate excessive local installation of software and hardware. Thereis an increasing trend of outsourcing enterprise data to the cloud forefficient data storage and management. However, this introduces manynew challenges toward data security. One critical issue is how to enable asecure data collaboration service including data access and update incloud computing. A data collaboration service is to support the availabilityand consistency of the shared data among multi-users. In this paper, wepropose a secure, efficient and scalable data collaboration scheme SECO.In SECO, we employ a multi-level hierarchical identity based encryption(HIBE) to guarantee data confidentiality against untrusted cloud. Thispaper is the first attempt to explore secure cloud data collaborationservices that precludes information leakage and enables a one-to-manyencryption paradigm, data writing operation and fine-grained accesscontrol simultaneously. Security analysis indicates that the SECO issemantically secure against adaptive chosen ciphertext attacks (IND-ID-CCA) in the random oracle model, and enforces fine-grained accesscontrol, collusion resistance and backward secrecy. Extensiveperformance analysis and experimental results show that SECO is highlyefficient and has only low overhead on computation, communication andstorage.

Esquema de agregación seguro para redes de sensoresinalámbricos utilizando criptografía de clave públicaPublicada el 24/01/2015

Publication date: 24 January 2015. Source: Ad Hoc Networks Author(s):Merad Boudia Omar Rafik , Senouci Sidi Mohammed , FehamMohammed. Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) are nowadays consideredas an important part of the Internet of Things (IoT). In these networks, dataaggregation plays an essential role in energy preservation. However,WSNs are usually deployed in hostile and unattended environments (e.g.military applications) in which the confidentiality and integrity securityservices are widely desired. Recently, homomorphic encryptions havebeen applied to conceal sensitive information during aggregation such thatalgebraic operations are done directly on ciphertexts without decryption. The main benefit is that they offer the end-to-end data confidentiality andthey do not require expensive computation at aggregator nodes since noencryption and decryption are performed. However, existing solutionseither incur a considerable overhead or have limited applicability to certaintypes of aggregate queries. This paper presents a novel secure dataaggregation protocol for WSNs. The scheme employs Stateful Public KeyEncryption (StPKE) and some previous techniques in order to provide anefficient end-to-end security. Moreover, our solution does not impose anybound on the aggregation function’s nature (Maximum, Minimum, Average,etc.). We present and implement our scheme on TelosB as well as MicaZsensor network platforms and measure the execution time of our variouscryptographic functions. Simulations are also conducted to show how ourscheme can achieve a high security level (by providing the above securityservices) with a low overhead ( in terms of computation andcommunication) in large-scale scenario.

Thelack of control over the cloud resources is one of the main disadvantagesassociated to cloud computing. The design of efficient architectures formonitoring such resources can help to overcome this problem. Thiscontribution describes a complete set of architectures for monitoring cloudcomputing infrastructures, and provides a taxonomy of them. Thearchitectures are described in detail, compared among them, and analysedin terms of performance, scalability, usage of resources, and securitycapabilities. The architectures have been implemented in real worldsettings and empirically validated against a real cloud computinginfrastructure based on OpenStack. More than 1000 virtual machines(VMs) have been executed for more than 2 months in scenarios rangingbetween 18 and 24 simultaneous VMs in order to achieve the empiricalcomparison provided in this contribution. The implementation of all themonitoring architectures has been released to the community asMonPaaS, a public open source project for OpenStack. Also, somerecommendations about the best architecture in terms of performance andsecurity have been covered in this contribution as part of the analysiscarried out.

Detección de apnea obstructiva del sueño utilizando laclasificación de densidad de Kernel en base aelectrocardiograma únicoPublicada el 02/03/2015

Abstract Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a common sleep disorder that often remains undiagnosed, leadingto an increased risk of developing cardiovascular diseases. Polysomnogram (PSG) is currently used as agolden standard for screening OSA. However, because it is time consuming, expensive and causes discomfort, alternative techniques based on a reduced set of physiological signals are proposed to solve this problem. Thisstudy proposes a convenient non-parametric kernel density-based approach for detection of OSA using single-lead electrocardiogram (ECG) recordings. Selected physiologically interpretable features are extracted fromsegmented RR intervals, which are obtained from ECG signals. These features are fed into the kernel densityclassifier to detect apnea event and bandwidths for density of each class (normal or apnea) are automaticallychosen through an iterative bandwidth selection algorithm. To validate the proposed approach, RR intervalsare extracted from ECG signals of 35 subjects obtained from a sleep apnea database (http://physionet.org/cgi-bin/atm/ATM). The results indicate that the kernel density classifier, with two features for apnea eventdetection, achieves a mean accuracy of 82.07 %, with mean sensitivity of 83.23 % and mean specificity of80.24 %. Compared with other existing methods, the proposed kernel density approach achieves a comparablygood performance but by using fewer features without significantly losing discriminant power, which indicatesthat it could be widely used for home-based screening or diagnosis of OSA.

Esquema de autenticación seguro y robusto para el usuarioremoto en base a contraseña utilizando tarjetas inteligentespara el sistema de información integrado EPRPublicada el 09/02/2015

Abstract An integrated EPR (Electronic Patient Record) information system of all the patients provides themedical institutions and the academia with most of the patients’ information in details for them to makecorrective decisions and clinical decisions in order to maintain and analyze patients’ health. In such system, theillegal access must be restricted and the information from theft during transmission over the insecure Internetmust be prevented. Lee et al. proposed an efficient password-based remote user authentication scheme usingsmart card for the integrated EPR information system. Their scheme is very efficient due to usage of one-wayhash function and bitwise exclusive-or (XOR) operations. However, in this paper, we show that though theirscheme is very efficient, their scheme has three security weaknesses such as (1) it has design flaws inpassword change phase, (2) it fails to protect privileged insider attack and (3) it lacks the formal securityverification. We also find that another recently proposed Wen’s scheme has the same security drawbacks as inLee at al.’s scheme. In order to remedy these security weaknesses found in Lee et al.’s scheme and Wen’sscheme, we propose a secure and efficient password-based remote user authentication scheme using smartcards for the integrated EPR information system. We show that our scheme is also efficient as compared toLee et al.’s scheme and Wen’s scheme as our scheme only uses one-way hash function and bitwise exclusive-or (XOR) operations. Through the security analysis, we show that our scheme is secure against possibleknown attacks. Furthermore, we simulate our scheme for the formal security verification using the widely-accepted AVISPA (Automated Validation of Internet Security Protocols and Applications) tool and show thatour scheme is secure against passive and active attacks.

Asistencia inteligente para caminar para pacientes con visiónperiférica limitadaPublicada el 27/03/2015

Smart walking sticks and body worn sensors that detect nearby objectshave been tried in the past to help visually impaired people avoid hittingobstacles. Yet, the technology tended to be more annoying than helpful, beeping anytime anything was near. A truly smart proximity sensor shouldinstead predict a chance of hitting an object rather than just being told thatsomething is near. Researchers from Massachusetts Eye and Ear,Schepens Eye Research Institute have developed a body worn device thatcan do just that. Fotografía de patologías, el comienzo de la patología digitalPublicada el 19/03/2015

Publication date: 19 March 2015. Source: Surgical Pathology ClinicsAuthor(s): B. Alan Rampy , Eric F. Glassy. The underutilized practice ofphotographing anatomic pathology specimens from surgical pathology andautopsies is an invaluable benefit to patients, clinicians, pathologists, andstudents. Photographic documentation of clinical specimens is essential forthe effective practice of pathology. When considering what specimens tophotograph, all grossly evident pathology, absent yet expected pathologicfeatures, and gross-only specimens should be thoroughly documented.Specimen preparation prior to photography includes proper lighting andbackground, wiping surfaces of blood, removing material such as tubes orbandages, orienting the specimen in a logical fashion, framing thespecimen to fill the screen, positioning of probes, and using the right-sizedscale.

Venieris Software platforms focusedon the healthcare monitoring sector have recently attained a greatpenetration in the ICT market and they certainly constitute a keycontributor to the improvement of the elderly people’s quality of life and thereduction of healthcare costs. It is of great importance that the platformallows for the simultaneous health, mental and psychological statusevaluation of an elderly person. However, the integration of vital signsmonitoring (Telehealth) with behavioral analysis based on home caresensors (Telecare) has not yet been established at a large scale. Wedescribe the design and implementation of such platform that enables thedeployment of services to follow-up the patient’s health status based on aset of monitored parameters per disease and to profile user’s habits anddiagnose deviations from their usual activities. A key aspect of the platformis its Service Oriented Architecture middleware that collects data fromheterogeneous Telecare and Telehealth gateways and provides the upperservice layers with a unified and standards compliant message. In thisway, an integrated view of Telehealth and Telecare data and alerts ismade possible into a backend Web Portal where clinicians and operatorshave access to.

Detección de elementos industriales relevantes en el aguamediante espectometría de emisión óptica de descargaluminiscentePublicada el 10/03/2015

Publication date: 10 March 2015. Source: Spectrochimica Acta Author(s):László Bencs , Nikoletta Laczai , Pál Mezei , Tamás Cserfalvi. Anelectrolyte cathode atmospheric glow discharge optical emissionspectrometry (ELCAD-OES) method was developed for the detection ofthe industrially relevant In, Rh and Te in water samples. Acid/additive type, sample pH and flow-rate were optimized. The UV–VIS spectrum wasscanned for analytical lines, free from spectral overlap interferences, andsensitive enough for quantifying the analytes at mg L1 or lower levels. Inseveral cases, the background spectrum of the ELCAD hindered the use ofconventional, resonant analytical lines in the UV, due to overlaps withbands of molecular species (e.g., OH, NO, N2). Te and Rh showed loweremission intensities than In (determined at In I 451.1nm), even using themost sensitive, interference-free transitions (i.e., Te I 214.3nm, Te I238.6nm, and Rh I 437.5nm). The emission intensities were highly samplepH dependent, i.e., analytical signals could only be detected at pHs lowerthan 2. Conversely, the use of acidity lower than pH1 caused lower plasmavolume, due to its contraction into the sample introduction capillary, anddischarge instability in terms of its frequent self-extinction. The detectionlimits for In, Rh, and Te were 0.01, 0.5, and 2.4mgL1, respectively.Calibration curves were linear up to 100–150mgL1. The precision for In,Rh, and Te in aqueous standards, expressed as relative standarddeviation (RSD) was not higher than 4.6, 6.4, and 7.4 %, respectively.Samples with high salt content (e.g., well water) caused positive matrixeffects (i.e., 2.0-3.6-fold signal enhancements), but also ~1.5-times higherRSDs.

Detección y monitoreo de síntomas de la enfermedad deParkinson utilizando teléfonos inteligentes: Estudio pilotoPublicada el 07/03/2015

Publication date: 7 March 2015. Source: Parkinsonism & RelatedDisorders. Author(s): S. Arora , V. Venkataraman , S. Donohue , K.M.Biglan , E.R. Dorsey , M.A. Little Background Remote, non-invasive andobjective tests that can be used to support expert diagnosis for Parkinson’sdisease (PD) are lacking. Methods Participants underwent baseline in-clinic assessments, including the Unified Parkinson’s Disease Rating Scale(UPDRS), and were provided smartphones with an Android operatingsystem that contained a smartphone application that assessed voice, posture, gait, finger tapping, and response time. Participants then took thesmart phones home to perform the five tasks four times a day for a month.Once a week participants had a remote (telemedicine) visit with aParkinson disease specialist in which a modified (excluding assessmentsof rigidity and balance) UPDRS performed. Using statistical analyses of thefive tasks recorded using the smartphone from 10 individuals with PD and10 controls, we sought to: (1) discriminate whether the participant had PDand (2) predict the modified motor portion of the UPDRS. Results Twentyparticipants performed an average of 2.7 tests per day (68.9% adherence)for the study duration (average of 34.4 days) in a home and communitysetting. The analyses of the five tasks differed between those withParkinson disease and those without. In discriminating participants with PDfrom controls, the mean sensitivity was 96.2% (SD 2%) and meanspecificity was 96.9% (SD 1.9%). The mean error in predicting themodified motor component of the UPDRS (range 11-34) was 1.26 UPDRSpoints (SD 0.16). Conclusion Measuring PD symptoms via a smartphone isfeasible and has potential value as a diagnostic support tool.

Servicio web geoespacial abierto e integrado habilita lainfraestructura de la información ciber-física para el monitoreode agricultura de precisiónPublicada el 01/02/2015

Publication date: February 2015. Source: Computers and Electronics inAgriculture. Volume 111. Author(s): Nengcheng Chen , Xiang Zhang ,Chao Wang. Various wireless and wired sensors serve vital functions insituational awareness for precision agriculture (PA) monitoring. Achievingthe seamless integration of these heterogeneous sensors into informationsystems to achieve interoperability is challenging. To solve this problem,an integrated open geospatial web service-enabled cyber-physicalinfrastructure was proposed in this study to acquire, integrate, process, and distribute monitoring information from the physical sensor space of thePA system over the World Wide Web space. This infrastructure wasdesigned as a service-oriented architecture middleware betweenheterogeneous physical sensors and different PA information clients. Inparticular, sensor web enablement and web processing services wereutilized. Ten types of distributed agricultural sensors were deployed inBaoxie field, Wuhan City, and two different experiments were conducted toverify the proposed cyber-physical infrastructure. Results demonstratedthat this infrastructure was capable of handling data and analyses insensor-based PA monitoring. The proposed approach was then comparedwith existing typical PA infrastructures. Results indicated that the proposedcyber-physical infrastructure provided interoperable access forheterogeneous sensors, data, and algorithms. The proposed infrastructurethus provides a new feasible method for information system design in PA.

Detección de frutas cítricas y recuperación de la oclusión bajocondiciones de iluminación naturalPublicada el 01/01/2015

Publication date: January 2015. Source: Computers and Electronics inAgriculture, Volume 110. Author(s): Jun Lu , Nong Sang. A method basedon color information and contour fragments was developed to identifycitrus fruits in variable illumination conditions within tree canopy, in order toguide the robots for harvesting citrus fruits. The color properties of fruittargets within citrus-grove scene were analyzed, a preliminarysegmentation method was put forward by fusing the chromatic aberrationinformation and normalized RGB model. The set of contour fragments wasconstructed by detecting the significant edges of chromatic aberration mapand the corners within these edges. The valid subset was chosen out bythree indicators of every fragment: length, bending degree, and concavityor convexity. The combination analysis was done for these valid contourfragments, and the ellipse fitting was used for every subset of validfragments to recover the occluded fruits. The partial order relationship wasderived based on the distribution of the edge within the overlapped area. The results showed that occluded fruits were effectively recovered undernatural outdoor light conditions using the proposed method, and therelative error was 5.27%. The partial order relation of fruit targets providekey cues for path planning of harvesting robot.

Estructura para la gestión de la refinación de nitrógeno en arrozde siembra directa seca utilizando el sensor ópticoGreenSeeker™Publicada el 01/01/2015

Publication date: January 2015. Source: Computers and Electronics inAgriculture, Volume 110. Author(s): A.M. Ali , H.S. Thind , Varinderpal-Singh , Bijay-Singh. To reduce the amount of wasted reactive nitrogen (N)reaching the environment and to achieve high N fertilizer use efficiency, asite-specific N management strategy using GreenSeeker™ optical sensor(GS) was evaluated in dry direct-seeded rice (DDSR) in the north-westernIndia. Four field experiments were conducted during 2011–2013 to developan optical sensor algorithm for fine tuning in-season N fertilizerapplications. It was demonstrated that panicle initiation of rice is theappropriate stage for applying GS guided N fertilizer dose. Application of aprescriptive dose of 60kgNha1 in two or 90kgNha1 in two or three equalsplit doses, followed by a corrective N dose guided by GS at panicleinitiation stage resulted in rice yield levels comparable to that obtained byfollowing general recommendation, but with lower total N fertilizerapplication. On an average, N use efficiency was improved by more than12% when N fertilizer management was guided by GS as compared towhen general N fertilizer recommendation was followed. The results provethe inadequacy of general recommendations for N fertilizer management inDDSR and possibility of increasing N use efficiency along with high riceyield levels through site-specific N fertilizer management using GS.

Resultados preliminares de la protección autónoma de cultivosPublicada el 01/01/2015

Publication date: January 2015. Source: Computers and Electronics inAgriculture. Author(s): M. Pérez-Ruiz , P. Gonzalez-de-Santos , A. Ribeiro, C. Fernandez-Quintanilla , A. Peruzzi , M. Vieri , S. Tomic , J. Agüera.New technologies are required for safe, site-specific and efficient control ofweeds, pathogens and insects in agricultural crops and in forestry. Thedevelopment and use of autonomous tractors equipped with innovativesensor systems, data processing techniques and actuation tools can behighly beneficial because this technology allows pest control measures tobe applied only if, when, and where they are genuinely needed, thusreducing costs, environmental damage and risks to farmers. RHEA(Robotics and associated High-technologies and Equipment forAgriculture) is an EC-funded research project conducted by a consortiumcomposed of 15 research partners from eight European countries. Thefocus of the project is the design, development and testing of a newgeneration of automatic and robotic systems for both chemical andphysical pest management. A heterogeneous fleet of small, cooperativeground and aerial robots equipped with advanced sensors, enhanced endeffectors and improved decision control algorithms will be used. Initially,we are investigating three major scenarios: (a) chemical weed control inwinter wheat, (b) thermal weed control (i.e., flaming) in maize and (c)variable applications of pesticides in olive crops. A preliminary systemevaluation demonstrated that the intelligent sprayer boom applied thecontrol agent to over 95% of the target area and that the response time,10s, of the direct-injection system was anticipated in the sprayer system toensure the accuracy of herbicide spraying. Field trial results showed thatthe estimated cost for site-specific flame weeding was approximately24€ha1, whereas approximately 52€ha1 was needed to perform aconventional broadcast treatment. Thus, the use of VRA (Variable RateApplication) flaming reduces the use of liquid petroleum gas (cost savingsof 28€ha1).

Sistema de información para el manejo de maquinaria agrícolaPublicada el 01/01/2015

Publication date: January 2015. Source: Computers and Electronics inAgriculture, Volume 110. Author(s): S. Fountas , C.G. Sorensen , Z.Tsiropoulos , C. Cavalaris , V. Liakos , T. Gemtos. Management offarming operations is currently rapidly changing toward a systemsperspective integrating the surroundings in terms of environmental impact, public entities and documentation of quality and growing conditions. Thelatest developments in Information and Communication Technologies (ICT)and the prevailing lack of interoperability between agricultural tractors, implements and on-board computers has led to the development of ISO11783 (ISOBUS) international standard for securing a more effectivecommunication between these entities. Precision agriculture requires anincreasing amount of information in order to be sufficiently managed andthe abilities of the ISOBUS protocol is a significant step toward this goal asit will provide a wealth of automated data acquisition for improving themanagement of crop production. However, there is an urgent need toorganize and specify the pathways of this large amount of information asprerequisites for subsequently turning it into knowledge and decisionsupport. The aim of this study was to analyze and design a future farmmachinery management information system to handle tractor andimplement data together with the interactions with their surroundings. Softsystems methodology was used to analyze the human activities and toidentify user requirements in relation to the use of farm machinery and themanagement of the information generated and pertaining to the tractor andthe farm implements. The empirical data to extract this information wasgathered from 30 targeted interviews with tractor operators and farmmanagers located in Greece and Denmark, and pertaining to questionsabout the optimal use of farm machinery data and tractor-implementperformance. A rich picture of the whole system was developed and fromthat a conceptual model that infers to daily operations with the tractor, implement and the interactions with the surroundings. The conceptualmodels were developed for both conventional farm machinery andagricultural robots. The conceptual model function will serve as a blueprintfor further development of required sensors, communication technology, and information processing capabilities.

Diseño de GIS y procedimiento para evaluación del suelo enbase a multi-criterio para una planificación sustentable del usode suelos a nivel regionalPublicada el 01/02/2015

Publication date: 1 February 2015. Source: Agriculture, Ecosystems;Environment. Volume 200 Author(s): Thanh Tuan Nguyen , Ann Verdoodt ,Tran Van Y , Nele Delbecque , Thuy Chi Tran , Eric Van Ranst. Design ofcomprehensive, standardized land evaluation tools is challenged byconstraints of scale, data availability, validity, and mathematical translationand combination of diagnostic indicators. This study aims to design a GIS-based multi-criteria land suitability analysis that integrates agro-ecologicalaptitude, environmental impact and socio-economic feasibility criteria in astep-wise procedure combining recent advances in indicator selection, evaluation and weighing – exploiting information from various data sources– with functional mathematical combination procedures. The procedureinvolves: (1) selection of diagnostic land characteristics, (2) design of thecorresponding evaluation criteria and consequent scoring of the diagnosticcharacteristics, (3) arithmetic combination of the scored characteristics intopartial performance indices for agro-ecological aptitude, environmentalimpact and socio-economic feasibility, and (4) classification of theperformance indices into aptitude, impact, and feasibility classes anddetermination of the overall land suitability class of the proposed land use.The tool’s performance and applicability proved successful in a case study, identifying expansion zones for rubber in Quang Tri province, Vietnam.Local expert knowledge, relevant literature sources, factor-yieldrelationships and the discriminating power of different land characteristicswithin the given environment were successfully integrated to select, scoreand weigh diagnostic land characteristics. Explicit distinction betweenfactors and constraints depending on the fuzziness of their spatial patterns, and between limiting and non-limiting factors depending on their impactand interaction, furthermore allowed to apply the most relevant arithmeticcombination procedures.

El rol del GNSS en las estrategias de navegación de robotsagrícolas rentablesPublicada el 16/01/2015

Publication date: 16 January 2015. Source: Computers and Electronics inAgriculture. Author(s): Francisco Rovira-Más , Ishani Chatterjee , VerónicaSáiz-Rubio. The current state of automation technology has led to agrowing interest in the design and development of new use-caseagricultural robots that can provide effective solutions to the challengesthat agriculture is facing in industrialized countries, especially thosederived from labor shortage and ever-increasing production costs. Theadvent of autonomous moderate-size machines in the field appears as aprospective way of promoting the sustainable production of food in Europe,Japan, and North America. However, there exist important obstacles to thebroad expansion of autonomous robots in the field; reliabil ity, safeguarding, system complexity, and cost-efficiency in particular rank highamong the impediments to overcome before prototypes move into theproduction stage. Robot navigation is essential for the successfuldeployment of autonomous machines in conventional farms, as a minimumlevel of safety has to be granted at the same time that navigation enginescannot be too sophisticated for solutions to compete with currentequipment. In such compromise, global navigation satellite systems play akey role due to its wide range of solutions, and an important number oflimitations. In this research, a variety of experiments were conducted todetermine the scope of GNSS solutions as a principal component of thenavigation system of novel farm robots. Results showed that regardless ofthe quality of the receiver used, multipath and other uncontrollable errorseventually occur in the field, and therefore signal consistency must becontinuously checked by the robot’s navigation engine. Different strategiesbased on the meticulous analysis of NMEA strings, the optimalcombination of GGA and VTG messages, and the trajectory-basedredundant estimation of robot planar states are proposed to enhance theintegration of GNSS measurements in the navigation engine of agriculturalrobots.

Evaluación y comparación de la estabilidad en diferentesconfiguraciones de vehículo para operaciones agrícolasrobóticas en la ladera de los vallesPublicada el 01/01/2015

Publication date: January 2015. Source: Biosystems Engineering. Volume129. Author(s): Renato Vidoni , Marco Bietresato , Alessandro Gasparetto ,Fabrizio Mazzetto. Progress in sensors, controllers and mechatronicsdevices and the development of (semi-) autonomous systems that cantravel safely on uneven terrain and perform many operations hasencouraged research interest in the use of robotics for agriculture andforestry in hilly and mountainous terrains. Here, the main mobileconfigurations that are likely to be used for robotic platforms as implement-carriers (3-wheeled, conventional/articulated 4-wheeled, tracked) werereviewed and discussed in terms of their suitability for agriculturaloperations and their stability. A numerical index accounting for the lateralstability of a vehicle, the roll stability index, was used to indicate the in-fieldworking capacity of these platforms during side-slope operations.Assuming the same overall dimensions for all the configurations, the 3-wheel configuration, although very simple and agile, was seen as being theleast stable, while a tracked vehicle was the most stable, although it hadsome important drawbacks when used in an agricultural context. Thisdrawbacks included increased soil erosion and landslides caused by itstracks especially in the areas involving turning manoeuvres. Thearticulated system was found to be the most suitable for uneven and side-slope terrains because of its optimal steering capacity, agility and goodstability. It was found to reach a critical stability angle close to the 4-wheelvehicle.

Planificación del paisaje rural a través de modelado espacial yprocesamiento de imágenes de mapas históricosPublicada el 01/01/2015

Publication date: January 2015. Source:Land Use Policy. Volume 42Author(s): Alfonso Tortora , Dina Statuto , Pietro Picuno. Rural land hasbeen affected over the years by profound, complex and difficult tounderstand transformations due to natural events, human intervention andchanges in natural cycles. Nowadays, the analysis of rural land as well asthe environment and landscape is made easier and more completethrough the use of powerful and reliable tools; many changes can beconsidered to be models of territorial development that may prove useful inthe appropriate planning of interventions in a rural area. In this paper theland use changes in a rural area located in Southern Italy were analysedby comparing some historical cartographic supports produced by theItalian Geographic Military Institute at different periods over about 160years with modern maps, in order to evaluate the morphological andvegetation variations of agro-forestry land. The results in terms oflandscape modification of the study area show significant changes: theagricultural and forestry land has been affected by deep transformations.Land use and morphological changes at four time steps were conductedthrough the implementation of digital terrain models, which were enrichedby draping land cover pictures over them; these finally enabled anevaluation in a scenic way of the morphological and vegetation variationsof the agro-forestry landscape, allowing a virtual jump back to periodswhen digital aerial photography was not yet possible. Multitemporalanalysis with the support of GIS techniques has great potential forassessing and monitoring landscape diversity and typical changes ofvegetation and for planning sound interventions in landscape structures.

Colector de corriente para vehículos pesados en víaselectrificadas: análisis cinemáticoPublicada el 23/02/2015

We present a prototype of a novel current collector manipulator to be mounted beneath a heavy vehicle tocollect electric power from road embedded power lines. We describe the concept of the ground-level powersupply system for heavy vehicles and its main components. The main requirements and constraints, such assafety, robustness to harsh road and weather operational conditions, ambient environment aspects anddynamic properties, are introduced. The emphasis is on the developed kinematic model, which provides thebase for further development of the control system. We propose and derive an alternative approach forrepresenting the inverse kinematics by a two-dimensional polynomial approximation that avoids the usage ofcomplicated non-linear equations. It's simplicity is demonstrated by a numerical example with the basicparameters of the prototype. The basic motion sequences of the current collector and the way to control themare outlined.

Efectividad de vehículos eléctricos enchufables y energíarenovable en apoyo de los objetivos ambientales globales: Parte2 – Diseño e implicaciones de operación para recursos debalance de carga en la red eléctricaPublicada el 15/03/2015

Publication date: 15 March 2015. Source: Journal of Power Sources,Volume 278. Author(s): Brian Tarroja , Joshua D. Eichman , Li Zhang , TimM. Brown , Scott Samuelsen. A study has been performed that analyzesthe effectiveness of utilizing plug-in vehicles to meet holistic environmentalgoals across the combined electricity and transportation sectors. In thisstudy, plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) penetration levels are variedfrom 0 to 60% and base renewable penetration levels are varied from 10 to63%. The first part focused on the effect of installing plug-in hybrid electricvehicles on the environmental performance of the combined electricity andtransportation sectors. The second part addresses impacts on the designand operation of load-balancing resources on the electric grid associatedwith fleet capacity factor, peaking and load-following generator capacity, efficiency, ramp rates, start-up events and the levelized cost of electricity.PHEVs using smart charging are found to counteract many of thedisruptive impacts of intermittent renewable power on balancinggenerators for a wide range of renewable penetration levels, onlybecoming limited at high renewable penetration levels due to lack offlexibility and finite load size. This study highlights synergy betweensustainability measures in the electric and transportation sectors and theimportance of communicative dispatch of these vehicles.

Recomendaciones de diseño para el monitoreo inteligente deenergía: Estudio de caso en ItaliaPublicada el 15/03/2015

Publication date: 15 March 2015. Source: Energy and Buildings, Volume 91. Author(s): Dario Bonino , Luigi DeRussis. In the era of green energy and smart grids, the ability to access energy information and effectivelyanalyze such data to extract key performance indicators is a crucial factor for successful building management.Energy data can in fact be exploited both in long-term policy adaptation and in shorter term habits modification, providing the basis for stable improvements of the overall efficiency of buildings and dwellings. To reach theambitious goal of actually improving how buildings consume energy, four main challenges emerge fromliterature: (a) lack of skills and experience of energy managers, (b) complex and disparate data sets, which arecurrently blocking decision making processes, (c) mostly manual work-flows that struggle to find relevantinformation into overwhelming streams of data sourced by monitoring systems, and (d) lack of collaborationsbetween organizational departments. This paper provides deeper insights on these challenges, by investigatingthe kind of analysis currently performed by energy managers (in Italy) and the expectations they have ifrequired to reason about systems that will be available within the next five years, and proposes designrecommendations for next generation energy intelligence systems.

Modelo de almacenamiento de energía con vehículos en redpara el despacho de carga económico en la red inteligentePublicada el 01/01/2015

Publication date: January 2015. Source: International Journal of ElectricalPower & Energy Systems, Volume 64 Author(s): Uttam Kumar Debnath ,Iftekhar Ahmad , Daryoush Habibi , Ahmed Yousuf Saber. The intermittentnature of renewable energy sources (RESs) and unpredictable variableload demands have necessitated the inclusion of energy storage devicesin the smart grid environment. Electric vehicles (EVs) and plug-in hybridelectric vehicles (PHEVs), with vehicle-to-grid capability, referred to as“gridable vehicles” (GVs), have become an option as storage devices. However, unsupervised use of GVs as storage devices presents newchallenges due to concerns over battery lifetime and cost effectiveness ofthis two-way power transfer. These issues reduce the participation rate ofGVs in the vehicle-to-grid discharge program. In this study, we present asystem model, for GVs to act as distributed storage devices, whichmitigates concerns over battery lifetime, and provides GV owners with atransparent cost-benefit analysis of their participation in the vehicle-to-griddischarge program. With this model in place, fuel and emissions cost hasbeen reduced, as shown using particle swarm optimization. Simulationresults show that up to 52% of GVs might be discharging at a net loss. Incontrast, our proposed system ensures that no GVs are at loss whendischarging to the grid. This factor alone is expected to increase theparticipation rate of GVs by a significant margin, and ensure economicload dispatch.
