Detailed Lesson Plan

1 st CLASS PERIOD

Before the Task

Tell your students you want to show them a video which was part of an advertising campaign

by the European Commission. Stop after 42 seconds and ask them what they think is being

advertised (they will probably think it’s an advert for cosmetics or the like). Let them pay

attention to the whole video again and ask them further questions:

Discuss the questions as a whole group and tell them the ad was actually made to persuade

women to a career in science. The Commission said that the video had to "speak their

language to get their attention" and that it was intended to be "fun, catchy" and strike a

chord with young people. Obviously, the negative reactions were immediate; the video went

viral and forced the EU to take it down after it received so many negative comments. Let

them read the handout with an example. Help them with vocabulary: the gender gap,

beakers, willy-nilly, ditzy, sexist… etc.

Who is it addressed to? What for?

What’s the purpose?

Do you think it is effective?

Can you think of a more effective ad with the same goal?

During the Task

Tell them they are a EU project developer and that they are currently working in groups of 4

or 5 people on an alternative and sexism free version of “Science- it’s a girl thing” clip. At the

moment, it is still in the conceptual stage. Ss work in groups and make a list of all the things

they need (photos, video clips, they can either use CC materials they can look for on the web

or create their own raw material using their mobile devices) and decide exactly how they are

going to make this clip more effective to get young girls interested in Science avoiding sex

discrimination.

Help them out by providing them with:

1) A storyboard

an Internet connection.

2 nd CLASS PERIOD

After the Task/ Presentation of their projects

Groups’ speaksperson pitches their ideas, explain what their objectives were and what their

clip is about before showing their ads to the rest of the class.

Additional Notes/Tips for Success

Autonomous and creative as students may be at this level, successful projects require the

teacher’s guiding help all through the conceptual stage. Help them by pointing out the

effectiveness of images and stories behind their advertisements. Give them a time limit for

their videos and remember Animoto free version only allows 30 second online videos.
