it was 100 years ago on April 26th 1918 that Gunner James Graham forgie was killed by a shell blast in the railway cutting in the small french village of Villers-Bretonneux. He was one of the thousands of casualties suffered by the 13th and 15th brigades of the Aif as they halted the German counter attack (operation michael) from breaking through the British lines. it is interesting to note that this feat was featured on the front page of the new York times.

He left his jacket at the taylor and forgie carpentry workshop in tod street telling colleagues to leave it there for his return, but that was not to be. even more poignant was that he married mary Wilson of norwood two days before he embarked for france.

His last message home came in 1971 when a message was found in a bottle on a beach in esperance WA. the message has been preserved by Art lab and kept at Cowan street. the jacket is on display in a cabinet at our Cowan street refreshment area.

mark & Gizelle forgie were so proud to attend and be part of the centenary commemorations in france and commend Gawler’s new memorial to everyone.

Helping people through difficult times since 1855Taylor & Forgie Funeral Directors

Taylor & Forgie Funeral Directors

We can feel lost for words and fearful of saying the ‘wrong’ thing.firstly, remember that grieving takes a long time (on average 2-5 years) and during this period grieving people need ongoing understanding. Before we think about what words we can say, there are basic principles that grieving people need.they need to feel safe with us. Acceptance, by us, of what they have to say.they need to be listened to, without interruption, letting them repeat their story hundreds of times.

We need to allow them to grieve in their own way, without judging their methods. We need to ask them what they would like us to do to help them. maybe there is nothing active, rather just ‘being there’, or a touch/hug is what they want.Keeping these needs in mind we can use the following phrases because we really care for our friends.

First create genuine safety.“Whatever you want to tell me, i won’t think different of you and i promise it won’t go out of thisroom(confidentiality).”“YourfeelingsareOK,feelingangryisnormal.”“Tellmeaboutit.Ihaveplentyoftimetolisten.”“You’renotgoingcrazy,grievingisnormal.”“tell me how you’re feeling about that, i’ve got timetolisten.”“there are no words i can say to take your pain away,Iwishtherewere.”

“it takes a long time to grieve, even telling yourstory400timesOK.”“even if he/she is out of their suffering, i guess thereisstillpainforyou,that’snormal.”“I’msorryforthepainyouarefeeling.”“Tellmewhatistheworsttimeforyou.”“tell me what hurts the most, it’s a long hard roadforyou.”“it’s oK to cry, let it out, keeping the tears in will only make you sick. i’m not embarrassed andI’llbehereaslongasyouneedme.”Give the person a tissue and a squeeze of their arm.

things to avoid are clichés like “she’d want youtogetonwithyourlife”,or“you’rethemanofthefamilynow.”Thesestatementsarenot helpful.sometimes people say, “but isn’t she wallowing?Can’the/shegetonwithlife.It’sbeennearlyayear.”Theycarefortheperson,but they’re putting unrealistic pressure and demands on them.

Finally avoid giving advice. Grieving people may feel confused and scared, however it is better for you to say, “let’s talkaboutit,whatideascanwethinkof.”Whenthepersonsays,“othersareworseoff”or“he’soutofhissuffering”,respondwith“However,thisisyourpainandit’sreal.”

Durdin & Forgie Family Funerals

Durdin funerals was started back in the 1920s in Hamley Bridge by local builder W.H. Durdin.

in the 1960’s Durdins acquired Ahrns Bros funerals in Balaklava, expanding to care for families in both Hamley Bridge and Balaklava. His

grandson Warren took over the business in the early 1980’s.

Durdin & forgie family funerals was established in 2003 when Durdin funerals became part of taylor & forgie in Gawler. this marked a period of investment in facilities at the scotland street premises with a new 110-seat

chapel being constructed and improved community services.
