What is the Jubilee Year of Mercy that began this past December 8th?

The three signs that characterize the Jubilee are the pilgrimage, the Holy Door and indulgence.

The pilgrimage symbolizes the history of the Church and the daily life of those

who aspire to the unfinished state of perfect man in the fullness of Christ's existence.

The Holy Door evokes the passage of every Christian from sin to grace , while

the indulgence is what God gives to all his children who seek after atonement for their sins with works of mercy.

Forgiveness and mercy

Francis launched the Jubilee of 12 months to highlight what has become a key theme of his papacy : show the merciful and humble side of a Catholic Church that is more often known for its judgments and assessments about morality.

OPENING THE DOORS OF MERCY Dear Friends, On December 8th the Holy Father opened the Holy Door of Mercy in the Basilica of St. Peter, marking the official start of the Jubilee Year of Mercy. This beautiful and meaningful tradition has biblical roots found in the Old Testament, where a Jubilee Year was proclaimed and debts were forgiven, rivalries forgotten, sins forgiven, and a sense of unity reigned among the people. Perhaps you remember our last Jubilee Year in 2000 “Open Wide the Doors to Christ” proclaimed by our now Saint Pope John Paul II. Fifteen years later now, we open the Doors of Mercy. The significance of “entering” the Doors of Mercy is to encourage a conversion of heart, leave the old self behind and be transformed and renewed by accepting God’s mercy. This image reminds me of Jesus’ parable of the “narrow gate” (the eye of the needle), in order to enter this gate we must unload our heavy loads and leave them behind, which also signifies “freedom”. In the following weeks we will continue speaking about the meaning of the Jubilee Year of Mercy and how we can prepare and participate in this beautiful tradition taking advantage of the blessings we can receive by celebrating it. ¿En qué consiste el Jubileo de la Misericordia que inicio este 8 de diciembre? Los tres signos que caracterizan al Jubileo son la peregrinación, la Puerta Santa y la indulgencia. La peregrinación simboliza la historia de la Iglesia y el vivir diario de una existencia inacabada de quien aspira al estado de hombre perfecto en la

plenitud de Cristo. La Puerta Santa evoca el paso de cada cristiano del pecado a la gracia, mientras que la indulgencia es la que Dios con-cede a todos sus hijos que la buscan tras expiar los pecados con obras de piedad. El perdón y la misericordia Francisco lanzó el jubileo de 12 meses para destacar lo que se ha convertido en un tema clave de su papado: mostrar el lado misericordioso y acogedor de una Iglesia católica a la que a menudo se conoce más por sus juicios y valoracio-nes sobre moral.

ABRIENDO LAS PUERTAS DE LA MISERICORDIA

Queridos amigos,

El 8 de diciembre el Santo Padre abrió la Puerta Santa de la Misericordia en la Basílica de San Pedro, que marca el inicio oficial del Año Jubilar de la Misericordia.

Esta tradición hermosa y significativa tiene raíces bíblicas que se encuentran en el Antiguo Testamento, donde un año jubilar era proclamado y deudas eran perdonadas, rivalidades olvida-das, los pecados perdonados, y un sentido de unidad reinaba entre el pueblo. Tal vez te acuerdas de nuestro último Jubileo en el 2000 "Abran las puertas a Cristo" proclamado por San Juan Pablo II. Quince años después, ahora, abrimos las puer-tas de la Misericordia.

El significado de "entrar" por las puertas de la Misericordia es una invitación a la conversión del corazón, dejar el hombre viejo atrás y ser transformado y renovado aceptando la miseri-cordia de Dios. Esta imagen me recuerda la parábola de Jesús “la puerta estrecha" (el ojo de la aguja), para poder entrar en esta puerta tenemos que descargar nuestras cargas pesadas y dejarlos atrás, que también significa "libertad".

En las próximas semanas vamos a seguir hablando sobre el significado del Año Jubilar de la Misericordia y cómo pode-mos prepararnos y participar en esta hermosa tradición y aprovechar las bendiciones que podemos recibir con la cele-bración de la misma.

We are all Hurt By Sexual Abuse Part 6

When someone commits an act of abuse against a child or youth—whether within the Church or in public schools, town or-ganizations or in homes—all of the society suffers. For that reason, the Archdiocese requires everyone who works with chil-dren or youth to be trained in sexual abuse awareness and to undergo a back-ground check. By participating in this

effort, we all say “ We do not condone abuse within the Church, and are taking steps to ensure that it does not.” The Protecting God’s Children program is a requirement for those working with children, but it is open to all adult parishioners or school parents who wish to learn more about how to en-sure safe environments for children and youth in our society.
