In a consumer-centered society, we can easily forget about the natural rhythm of life,

which always requires a time of preparation before important events. We have instant

coffee, instant lottery, fast-food, instant messenger, same-day dry-cleaning, overnight

delivery…. Our tendency is to think that everything should happen fast and easily - es-

pecially in our spiritual life.

But that's not true. Think about how much work goes into to plowing a farmer's field be-

fore it's ready to plant. Think about the nine months of preparation that occur before a

mother gives birth to her child. Think about the literally thousands of man-hours that a

professional football team uses just to get ready for one regular season football game.

Or think about everything artists have to do in order to get their canvas ready for paint-

ing. After building a wooden frame, cutting the canvas to fit it, stretching the canvas

over the frame and attaching it firmly and evenly, they're still not ready to paint. They

have to prime the canvas first, applying a layer of "sizing", a thin coat of weak glue that

acts as a sealant and protective coating. Once that is dry, they have to apply the

"ground," a layer of special gesso or very thin plaster that produces a uniform color, tex-

ture, and level of absorbency.

When the first coat of gesso dries, the artist has to lightly brush the entire canvas with

sandpaper to smooth it out, and then apply a second coat. Only when that coat has dried

and been smoothed is the canvas ready to become a work of art. If an artist is careless

with this painstaking process of preparation, the acid in the oil paint will soak through

the surface and deteriorate the fabric of the canvas. Then, years later, the painting will

suddenly and inexplicably start to fall apart.

Advent is about preparing the canvas of our hearts to receive God's grace at Christmas.

Christ wants to adorn the Jerusalem of our hearts with wonderful works of art, but he

needs us to prepare the canvas - that's what Advent is all about. In that spirit, let’s con-

tinue our Advent Journey!

En una comunidad centrada en el consumismo, muy fácilmente podemos olvidar el ritmo

natural de la vida, que siempre requiere un tiempo de preparación antes de cada evento

importante. Tenemos café instantáneo, lotería instantánea, comida rápida, mensajes ins-

tantáneos, servicio de tintorería en el mismo día, entrega a domicilio al día siguiente…. Te-

nemos la tendencia a pensar que todo debe ser fácil y rápido - especialmente en nuestra

vida espiritual.

Pero eso no es cierto. Piensen en todo el trabajo que lleva preparar el campo de un agricul-

tor antes de que esté listo para ser sembrado. Piensen en los nueve meses de preparación

que pasan antes de que una madre dé a luz a su hijo. Piensen en las miles de horas, que li-

teralmente necesita un equipo de jugadores profesionales para estar listos para un solo

juego en una temporada de juegos de futbol.

O piensen en lo que todo lo que tienen que hacer los artistas para tener su lienzo listo para

empezar a pintar. Después de hacer un marco de madera, cortar el lienzo a la medida, esti-

rar el lienzo sobre el marco y fijarlo firme y uniformemente, todavía no están listos para

pintar. Primero necesitan preparar el lienzo poniendo una capa delgada de “encolado”

que es una especie de goma que sirve para proteger y sellar. Cuando se seca, se debe apli-

car una capa de emplastado que produce un color uniforme, textura y un nivel de absor-

bencia.

Cuando la primera capa de emplastado se seca, el artista tiene que pasar suavemente una

lija para dejar el lienzo suave y luego aplicar una segunda capa. Hasta que la segunda capa

se ha secado y lijado, entonces el lienzo está listo para convertirse en una pieza de arte. Si

el artista no tiene cuidado con el proceso de preparación de sus pinturas, el ácido de la pin-

tura de aceite se absorbe en la superficie y va a deteriorar la tela del lienzo. Así, años des-

pués, repentina e inexplicablemente, la pintura se empieza a desmoronar.

El Adviento es como la preparación del lienzo de nuestros corazones para recibir la gracia

de Dios en la Navidad. Cristo quiere adornar el Jerusalén de nuestros corazones con obras

de arte maravillosas, pero necesita que nosotros preparemos el lienzo - de eso se trata el

Adviento. ¡Con ese espíritu, continuemos nuestro recorrido de Adviento!
