Queridos compañeros:

Se acerca el próximo Congreso GEER . Aún tenemos en nuestras retinas las imágenes de San Sebastián, pero hay que empezar a pensar en la reunión de Ávila, donde el Dr . Rafael González ejercerá de anfitrión .

El reciente cambio de fechas límite para el envío de comunicaciones hace que el verano sea tiempo de ciencia, al menos parcialmente, ya que correr detrás de quimeras no lleva a ningún sitio . Dicho de otro modo: hay que concebir el descanso como parte integral del ser humano; además de que hay que vivir la vida más allá de la vér-tebra . Pero si queremos formar parte activa del progreso de lo que por nuestra vocación nos atrae (el manejo de la patología de la co-lumna vertebral), hay que ir madurando los proyectos que desee-mos presentar .

Dicho esto, también podemos dedicar unos momentos a recabar información sobre Ávila: ciudad castellana medieval con una historia rica donde las haya, cuya imagen más icónica son, quizá, las mura-llas que aparecen en el cartel del congreso, pero no es lo único que tiene, ni mucho menos, como iréis descubriendo .

Por otra parte, no quiero dejar de recordar el Curso conjunto con la NASS (North American Spine Society) sobre patología degenerati-va, que promete una actualización global de estas afecciones tan frecuentes en nuestras consultas, presentadas y abiertas a discu-sión con profesionales de auténtica élite .

No quiero aburriros más, ya “os he puesto tareas” para los ratos libres de este periodo estival, que tanto invita al bien merecido des-canso tras el ritmo de trabajo y de vida que nos va imponiendo la sociedad en la que vivimos y a la que servimos durante el resto del año . Como se suele decir: sin prisa, pero sin pausa .

Un abrazo y que disfrutéis preparando la asistencia a nuestra reu-nión de Ávila del año que viene, donde espero saludaros y empa-parme de vuestras contribuciones científicas al Congreso .

Dear Friends and Colleagues,

The next GEER congress is around the corner . With the images of San Sebastian still in our minds, it is time to start thinking about the next meeting in Ávila, in which Dr Rafael Gonzalez will act as the host .

The recent change of the deadline date for submissions impo-ses on us a period of scientific work during our vacations, as following a chimera leads to nowhere . In other words, a break is an integral part of our lives, although at times extraordinary efforts have to be made . However, if we wish to be an active part in the progress in our field of work (the management of spinal pathology), we must deepen the projects we wish to present .

Having said this, we could also dedicate some time to gather information about Avila, a medieval Castilian city with a rich history . Possibly, the most iconic image of this beautiful city, is its walls represented on the Congress poster; however, it is not the unique characteristic that it has… there are others to be discovered! Furthermore, we should also take into conside-ration the joint course with the North American Spine Society on degenerative pathology . The aim of the course is a global update of the complaints we frequently deal with in our con-sultations to be presented and openly discussed with elite pro-fessionals .

I will not bore you further . I have given you “homework” for any free time you might have during the summer . Of course we all deserve a break after being submitted to the lifestyle the socie-ty has imposed on us during the rest of the year . As it is said “Not overnight, but at a steady pace” .

Warm regards and I hope you enjoy preparing your attendance to our meeting in Avila next year, where I hope to greet you and absorb your scientific contributions to the Congress .

Queridos amigos,

Como todos sabéis el año 2018 se celebrará nuestro congreso nacional en Ávila, una de las primeras ciudades patrimonio de la Humanidad en España .

Además de ser un área de influencia de nuestra zona de trabajo, es mi ciu-dad natal, por lo que para mí es un doble orgullo poder ofreceros un buen congreso y un fin de semana inolvidable en mi ciudad .

Intentaremos organizar una reunión científica de alto nivel en un entorno mágico . El palacio de congresos, sin duda uno de los más atractivos de España, como podréis comprobar, no defraudará a los asistentes ni a los diferentes patrocinadores . El entorno natural, con el Valle Ambles y la sierra de Gredos no os dejarán indiferentes .

Hemos organizado un comité organizador en el que he querido contar con abulenses de nuestra profesión, compañeros de trabajo y, sobre todo, con un presidente de honor humilde, trabajador incansable y magnifica persona, que me enseñó muchos aspectos profesionales y humanos en mis principios y que además es uno de los primeros miembros del GEER, Alfredo García . Gracias amigo por aceptar .

Los abulenses estamos orgullosos de Ávila es sus tres aspectos: el medie-val, con sus magníficas murallas; el renacentista, por sus palacios; y el mís-tico, por sus iglesias y conventos, frutos de escritores como Santa Teresa de Jesús y San Juan de la Cruz .

Para terminar, sin duda no os defraudará su gastronomía, sus carnes, le-gumbres y sus zonas de tapas .

Pero sin duda, uno de los escritores que mejor ha definido Ávila en pocas palabras es nuestro premio nobel Camilo José Cela:

“Ávila, (…) la capital de España que vive más cerca del cielo, es una minúscula y apacible ciudad amurallada y gentil, recoleta, noble y si-lenciosa . Ávila, mística y tradicional, honesta y dura, espera, fuera del tiempo, el corazón amigo a quien entregar su secreto diáfano y miste-rioso” . Camilo José Cela .

Dear Friends and Colleagues,

As you already know, the next national congress of the GEER will be held in Avila, one of Spain’s first world heritage cities .

Avila is a region of great influence in our field of work as well as my birth city . I take great pride in offering the best possible Congress and an unforgettable weekend .

Our purpose is to organize a high-level scientific meeting in a unique and magical environment . The site of the congress is one of Spain’s most attractive convention centres that will not disappoint either par-ticipants or sponsors . The natural environment, including the Ambles valley and the Gredos mountains will not leave you indifferent .

The organizing committee includes professionals from Avila and co-workers . Dr Alfredo Garcia, a tireless worker, humble, and a great person who guided me through professional and personal growth and was one of the first members of the GEER, has been appointed as honorary president . I thank him for accepting this mission .

The natives of the Avila region are very proud of their heritage: the medieval –its magnificent walls–, the renaissance –its palaces–, and the mystic –its churches and convents–, which produced writers such as Santa Teresa de Jesus and San Juan de la Cruz, .

Last but not least, you will have the opportunity of savouring an ex-traordinary gastronomic experience, the meats, the legumes, and the tapas .

Camilo Jose Cela, a Spanish Nobel Prize winner in Literature, used the following words to describe Avila:

“Avila, ( . . .) the Spanish capital that lives closest to the sky, is a tiny and peaceful walled city that is pleasant, secluded, noble, and silent . Ávila, mystical and traditional, honest and hard, awaits, out of time, a friendly heart to reveal its crystalline and mysterious se-crets” . Camilo José Cela
