Dear brothers and sisters in Christ,
Summer is upon us! As I sit here in my office at the school, silence surrounds me. It’s amazing what a difference the
presence of our 700 students at SACS makes for the atmosphere of our parish offices. The life and chaos of the school
can at times be distracting, but now that things are quieting down, I miss it! I miss them!
The news has been full of interesting events lately. The usual mix of bizarre, tragic, and even, thanks be to God, the
welcome news that the Archdiocese’s bankruptcy is being resolved at last.
But one story has not received the attention that it deserves. The new Star Wars movie is in theaters! My favorite
movie reviewer, Deacon Stephen Graydanus (www.decentfilms.com) gave it a “C”, but even that won’t be enough to
stop me from seeing the movie this weekend. In your charity, please prepare a courtesy laugh for a Star Wars reference
which will probably be appearing in a homily in the next week or two.
The original Star Wars movies — my favorites by far — do contain some
valuable insights into the universe. Perhaps the most important message
of the original trilogy is that redemption is always possible. Darth Vader
went down a terrible path, gave himself to the “Dark Side” of the Force,
and committed many atrocities. But at the end of his life, the courage and unconquerable love of his son, Luke
Skywalker, won him back. “There is still good in you,” said Luke. And so Darth Vader could say to Luke with his last
breath: “You were right… You were right about me. Tell your sister, … you were right.” Whether you like Star Wars or
not, this is a powerful lesson. We need never despair of God’s help and forgiveness, and we can always count on God
to give us the opportunity to start again.
In the Gospel for today, Jesus talks about an unforgiveable sin: blasphemy against the Holy Spirit. The Church has
always understood these difficult words to refer to “final impenitence” — that is, a refusal to repent of our sins before
we die. The awesome news is that the only sin God will not forgive is the one we don’t ask Him to.
Today, let us resolve to hope and pray for the conversion of every person we know who
is far from God or His Church. We should never give up hope for any person, including
ourselves! No matter how many times they, or we, may fall, let us turn with
unconquerable trust to our merciful God, and ask him for the grace of repentance and
redemption.
Our Lady, refuge of sinners, pray for us!
Yours in Christ,
Fr Paul

Dile a
No importa cuantas
Padre Paul

Happy Summer Vacation!
We finished an excellent school year at Shakopee Area Catholic
School, and now students and teachers are officially on summer
vacation until September 4! Even though it is summer vacation,
students and staff still engage in meaningful learning! On the staff
side, most of our teachers enroll in summer classes and
workshops. In fact, with the help of a grant from the Catholic
School Center of Excellence, we are sending five teachers to the
ISTE (International Society for Technology in Education)
conference in Chicago in June. These teachers will bring back what
they learn to share with the rest of our staff. We also have teachers
taking summer classes on Reading Instruction, Catechist Seminars,
Writing Methods, Mental Health in Children, and Positive
Psychology.
For students, we love that they are learning through play in
summer months. We encourage them to spend time playing
outdoors, playing alone, and playing with groups of friends. The
natural learning opportunities are unlimited. Our school also offers
a variety of summer classes for students in religion, service, math,
art, tutoring and summer reading!
I hope you are enjoying the Minnesota summer. If you would
like to know more about our school, please don’t hesitate to call.
