Secretos de las lentes usadas en la filmacin de Dr.Zhivago, en Aldeadvila. Julio de 1965http://tim1965.livejournal.com/1266671.html

An explosion Monday occurred at Russia's Sayano-Shushenskaya Dam inSiberia. The explosion occurred in the power generating station at the baseof the dam, blowing out walls and causing the turbine room to explosivelyflood with water. Three of the plant's 10 turbines were destroyed andthree others damaged. The force of the flood lifted one of the 900-tonturbines from its housing and bounced it off the ceiling of the turbineroom. Seventeen dam workers were confirmed dead, and another 58 missingand presumed dead in the near-freezing water.

The cause of the accident is not yet known. Chechen rebels claimed theyset off an explosive device at the dam, but investigators said that was a lie.The most likely cause is a sudden rise in hydraulic pressure in the pipes andturbines, caused by human error. Engineers are also looking at whether afaulty turbine might also have caused the accident.

The dam itself was not damaged. Water gushed through the destroyedturbine rooms at the base of the dam, making it appear as if the dam hadbeen breached, but it was not.

The Sayano-Shushenskaya Dam is on the the Yenisei River in southernSiberia, near the border with Mongolia (near where Mongolia, Kazakhstan, and China all come together). It is Russia's largest hydroelectric dam fifth-largest hydroelectric plant in the world, providing 15 percent of Russia'shydroelectric power and 2 percent of its total power. Construction of thepower station started in 1968 and ended in 1978. The dam is 805 feet highand 3,500 feet wide.

So there I am, reading about this before any caffeine in the morning, and Ithink, "Gosh, the dam they filmed at in Doctor Zhivago is damaged!"

A full day passed before I remember that Doctor Zhivago (the novel) hadto be smuggled out of the USSR, that the Soviet Union banned the book (itplaced a higher value on human emotion than communist goals), and that theSoviet Union refused to permit filming of the Doctor Zhivago (the movie)on its territory.

    DUH!

The dam you see in Doctor Zhivago (the movie) is the Aldeadvila Damneaer Salamanca, Spain. Built from 1956 to 1962, Aldeadvila is the largesthydroelectric dam in Spain.

Get this: Aldeadvila is only 492 feet high. It looks much higher because ofits location in a narrow gorge and because the filmmakers (director DavidLean and cinematographers Freddie Young and Nicholas Roeg) used a shortfocal length lens to shoot the dam from above. Lenses with short focallengths tend to exaggerate the distance between objects in the foreground

and objects in the background. This made the Aldeadvila Dam look eventaller in the film than it really is.

So compare these two pictures: Perspective is everything! Sayano-Shushenskaya (top photo) is almost twice the height of Aldeadvila at thebottom.
