Four Women On December 2, 1980, three american nuns and a missionary were raped and murdered: Ita Ford, Maura Clarke, Dorothy Kazel, Jean Donovan. Members of the National Guard captured the four women, the same people who perpetrated this cri-me as they were leaving Comalapa International Airport. The religious as well as the secular belon-ged to the Congregation of Maryknoll and Ursuli-nes. They had come to El Salvador at the invitation of the blessed Oscar Arnulfo Romero. They worked in the poorer places defending Salvadorans of terror unleashed by its Government. In May 1984, Luis Antonio Colindres Alemán, Daniel Canales Ramí-rez, José Roberto Canjura, Carlos Joaquín Contre-ras, and Francisco Orlando Contreras, were senten-ced to 30 years in prison. However, the intellectual authors of this tragedy are still in freedom by being covered by an amnesty law. The Civil War that El Salvador suffered in the Dec-ade of 1980, left a trail of destruction and death impossible to surmount today, and many of the families of the thousands of civilian casualties still continue crying for justice. The murder of the three sisters and the secular missionary is one of the cas-es, that although it is true, was researched and re-flected in the report of the Truth Commission of the United Nations, continues still with impunity. Thir-ty-five years of that horrendous crime, the situation in El Salvador has not improved much. "The word of God came to the desert about John the son of Zechariah. Then he began to travel throughout the region of the Jordan, preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins, as it is written in the book of the Prophet Isaiah pre-dictiona: “A voice of one calling in the wilderness,‘Prepare the way for the Lord, make straight paths for him. Every valley shall be filled in, eve-ry mountain and hill made low.The crooked roads shall become straight, the rough ways smooth. And all people will see God’s salvation.” (Luke 3:3-6) The religious Ita Ford, Maura Clarke, Dorothy Ka-zel and Jean Donovan, decided to remain with the poor and persecuted in El Salvador, during one of the worst moments in the history of this country. They were murdered, as San Juan Bautista, to pro-claim with their lives, the need to transform hate, violence and injustice that society lived in, for the love of God and thy neighbor. The blood of these four North American martyrs is a cry to all of us Christians to leave the comfort of our lives, to risk our existence in the constant search to help more needy people who surround us. The Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary

Holy Day of Obligation- December 8 It’s important to understand what the doctrine of the Immaculate Conception is and what it is not. Some people think the term refers to Christ’s conception in Mary’s womb without the intervention of a human father; but that is the Virgin Birth. Others think the Immaculate Conception means Mary was conceived "by the power of the Holy Spirit," in the way Jesus was, but that, too, is incorrect. The Immaculate Con-ception means that Mary, whose conception was brought about the normal way, was con-ceived without original sin or its stain—that’s what "immaculate" means: without stain. The essence of original sin consists in the depriva-tion of sanctifying grace, and its stain is a cor-rupt nature. Mary was preserved from these defects by God’s grace; from the first instant of her existence she was in the state of sanctifying grace and was free from the corrupt nature original sin brings.

When discussing the Immaculate Conception, an implicit reference may be found in the an-gel’s greeting to Mary. The angel Gabriel said, "Hail, full of grace, the Lord is with you" (Luke 1:28). The phrase "full of grace" is a translation of the Greek word kecharitomene. It therefore expresses a characteristic quality of Mary.

The traditional translation, "full of grace," is better than the one found in many recent ver-sions of the New Testament, which give some-thing along the lines of "highly favored daugh-ter." Mary was indeed a highly favored daugh-ter of God, but the Greek implies more than that (and it never mentions the word for "daughter"). The grace given to Mary is at once permanent and of a unique kind.Kecharitomene is a perfect passive participle of charitoo, meaning "to fill or endow with grace." Since this term is in the perfect tense, it indicates that Mary was graced in the past but with continuing effects in the present. So, the grace Mary enjoyed was not a result of the angel’s visit. In fact, Catholics hold, it extended over the whole of her life, from conception onward. She was in a state of sanctifying grace from the first moment of her existence.

El 2 de Diciembre de 1980, fueron violadas y asesinadas tres Religiosas y una Misionera Laica norteamericanas: Ita Ford, Maura Clarke, Do-rothy Kazel, Jean Donovan. Las cuatro fueron detenidas por miembros de la Guardia Nacional, los mismos que perpetraron este crimen, al aban-donar el Aeropuerto Internacional de Comalapa. Las Religiosas, así como la Laica, pertenecían a las Congregaciones de Maryknoll y Ursulinas. Habían llegado a El Salvador por invitación del Beato Oscar Arnulfo Romero. Ellas trabajaban en los lugares más pobres defendiendo a los salvado-reños del terror desatado por su Gobierno. En mayo de 1984, Luis Antonio Colindres Alemán, Daniel Canales Ramírez, José Roberto Canjura, Carlos Joaquín Contreras, Francisco Orlando Contreras, fueron condenados a 30 años de pri-sión; sin embargo, los autores intelectuales de esta tragedia permanecen aún en libertad por estar amparados por una Ley de Amnistía.

La Guerra Civil que sufrió El Salvador en la dé-cada de 1980, dejó una huella de destrucción y muerte imposible de superarse hasta hoy día, y muchos de los familiares de miles de víctimas civiles aún continúan clamando justicia. El asesi-nato de las tres Religiosas y la Misionera Laica, es uno de los casos, que si bien es cierto, fue in-vestigado y plasmado en el Informe de la Comi-sión de la Verdad de Naciones Unidas, éste conti-núa todavía en la impunidad. A 35 años de aquél horrendo crimen la situación en El Salvador no ha mejorado mucho.

“Vino la palabra de Dios en el desierto sobre Juan, hijo de Zacarías. Entonces comenzó a reco-rrer toda la comarca del Jordán predicando un bautismo de penitencia para el perdón de los pe-cados, como está escrito en el libro de las predic-ciones del profeta Isaías: “Ha resonado una voz en el desierto: preparen el camino del Señor, ha-gan rectos sus senderos. Todo valle será rellena-do, toda montaña y colina, rebajada; lo tortuoso se hará derecho, los caminos ásperos serán allana-dos y todos los hombres verán la salvación de Dios” (Lc 3, 3-6).

Las Religiosas Ita Ford, Maura Clarke, Dorothy Kazel, y Jean Donovan, decidieron permanecer con los más pobres y perseguidos en El Salvador, en uno de los peores momentos históricos de este país. Fueron asesinadas, como San Juan Bautista, por proclamar con sus propias vidas la necesidad de transformar el odio, la violencia y la injusticia que vivía aquella sociedad, por el amor a Dios y al prójimo. La sangre de estas cuatro mártires norteamericanas constituye un grito a todos noso-tros cristianos a salir de la comodidad de nuestras vidas, a arriesgar nuestra existencia en la búsque-da constante por ayudar a las personas más nece-sitadas que nos rodean.
