From the Pastor’s Desk…

This Sunday's Gospel, a continuation of the Bread of Life discourse in the Gospel of John, focuses on

faith and the Eucharist. In last Sunday’s Gospel, Jesus fed over 5,000 people with five loaves of bread and two fish. He gave them as much food as they needed. They were so impressed and satis-fied that they sought Jesus to ask for more bread and more miracles. Jesus tried to make the Jews re-

alize that they have to go beyond their physical hunger. However, today's Gospel showed the Jewish leaders’ lack of faith and their unwillingness to hunger for God, as revealed in their questions to Jesus.

1. Rabbi, when did you get here (Capernaum)? Jesus knew that the crowd was only interested in other miracles for their own physical gratification.

Thus, He instructed them, “Do not look for food that perishes but for food that endures for eternal

life” (Jn 6:27). This is also a lesson for us: to find fulfillment and to satisfy our hunger, we should have faith in God and in what He does for us in Jesus. We should not seek Jesus only for material

or temporal favors. These are all passing. We should strive instead to possess Jesus, the Bread of Eternal Life.

2. What can we do to accomplish the works of God? This question seemed to show the crowd was sincerely seeking the truth, but actually, they were

seeking easy ways to perform the works of God. Jesus responded with another basic theme of the

Gospel, the summary of the entire passage: “This is the work of God, that you believe in the one he sent” (Jn 6:29). Again, faith in the person of Jesus is the key to heavenly blessings.

3. What sign can you do that we may see and believe in you? The Jewish leaders demanded more miracles, more proofs. They believed in Moses because he

gave their ancestors in the desert manna from heaven. Jesus clarified that the bread from heaven

was not from Moses but from God. The Bread of Life, the Bread of God from heaven that gives life to the world, is Jesus. Jesus revealed that “I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me will never hunger, and whoever believes in me will never thirst” (Jn 6:35).

This Gospel thus challenges us to move beyond the physical hungers of our everyday needs. In faith, we should seek Jesus, the true and eternal Bread of Life. Let us be assured that Jesus loves us and

longs to nourish us with his word and the Eucharist. Once we have Jesus, we have everything.

RELIGIOUS EDUCATIONAL CORNER

Eighteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

There will be registration for all children for the Faith Formation program after the 9:15 Mass and the 11:30 Mass. There will be registration available every day in the Faith Formation Center. At times something unexpected arises. Thus, please call 718-591-6536 to be sure that I will be available when it is best for you.

Classes are on Sunday from 8:45 am followed by Mass together at 10:45 for all children. However, those who return to continue knowing and living our faith have two options. These youngsters are those who have already received their First Holy Commun-ion. They may choose to come the usual time on Sunday or they may come on Saturday at 3:30 pm and then to-gether we will go to the 5:00 Mass. The tuition for these children will only be $25.00.

We will have the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd available on Sunday beginning at 8:45. This program is based on Maria Montessori’s method of education. They will not be bored because there is a great deal of involve-ment of the children in different learning activities. Give it a try; I am sure they will be happy!

All adults who desire to be baptized, receive their First Holy Communion, and or Confirmation, please see Sister Alice or call at 718-591-6536. The sessions will begin as soon as people come forward. Sessions are usually on Sun-day, but I can adapt to the extent possible to your schedule. I am already seeing one person. The diocese is urging a longer period of time for the preparation for these sacra-ments. Beginning now will help us make this possible.
