Con el propósito de continuar gene-rando espacios de debate en torno a las nuevas tecnologías de la in-
formación y las comunicaciones, y facilitar además el intercambio de experiencias, abrió sus puertas la XVII Convención y Feria Internacional Informática 2018, que hasta el próximo viernes sesionará en el Palacio de Convenciones de La Habana y el recinto ferial Pabexpo.
Durante la inauguración, presidida por Maimir Mesa, Ministro de Comunicaciones de Cuba, y Miriam Micado, rectora de la Universidad de las Ciencias Informáticas, se destacó el amplio programa académico del evento, y las oportunidades que ofrece para exponer resultados —tanto de entidades cubanas como foráneas— en materia de desarrollo tecnológico.
“En esta edición se cumplen 30 años de creado el evento, demostrando así el interés y la prioridad de sostener de ma-nera sistemática el intercambio científico y la promoción del uso y desarrollo de las TIC”, señaló Wilfredo González, vicetitular del Ministerio de las Comunicaciones
La Convención, según explicó, agrupa 33 conferencias magistrales, mesas redon-das y paneles, y más de 600 ponencias. Paralelamente a los encuentros científicos, sesiona también una convención virtual, donde se puede acceder a las conferencias y presentaciones en línea.

make the sharing of experiences far easier, the 17th “Informática 2018” International Convention and Fair opened Monday throu-gh Friday at the International Conference Center and the PABEXPO Fairgrounds in Havana.
During the ribbon-cutting ceremony, presided over by Maimir Mesa, the island nation’s minister of Communications, and Miriam Micado, dean of the Information Technology University, the high-ranking officials underscored the event’s broad academic program and the countless opportunities it offers to showcase major outcomes reaped by both Cuban and international companies in terms of technological development.
“This year’s edition marks the 30th anniversary of this event, a clear-cut token of the tremendous interest and priority given to the systematic sharing of scientific
information, as well as to promoting the use and advance of ITCs,” said Wilfredo Gonzalez, Cuba’s deputy minister of Communications.
The convention, Mr. Gonzalez went on to say, gathers 33 master lectures, roundtables and panels, plus a grand total of 600 work papers.
In the same breath, a number of scientific meetings are also underway in a virtual convention in which guests and attendees can watch lectures and presentations online.
For its part, the International Fair includes 51 booths that make up over 2,000 square meters of exhibition space, featuring Cuban and foreign companies from eight countries. The main stand shows off a sample of two dozen outstanding national projects.
Under a motto reading “Towards Sustainable Development”, the event also counts on a business forum as the setting of choice to present projects and explore

Funcionarios y jefes de proyecto en organismos y en-tidades cubanas expusieron este lunes los avances del proceso de informatización en la Isla, su impacto
económico y social, así como las líneas de trabajo funda-mentales relacionadas con la infraestructura tecnológica y los servicios y contenidos digitales.
Como parte de la jornada inaugural de la XVII Con-vención y Feria Internacional Informática 2018, se dieron a conocer los principales resultados de los programas de gobierno electrónico y atención ciudadana, informatiza-ción de los servicios públicos, ensamblaje de equipos y terminales, además del programa centrado en la televi-sión digital, cuya cobertura en definición estándar es hoy de aproximadamente 7 millones de habitantes.
Según trascendió durante una mesa redonda presidida por Luis Perdomo, Viceministro Primero del Ministerio de las Comunicaciones, el desarrollo de las telecomunicaciones en Cuba ha incluido la ampliación de los servicios de acceso a internet a la población, que hoy cuenta con 673 sitios pú-
blicos wifi de Etecsa, 207 salas de navegación y 771 áreas de navegación de terceros (wifi + salas).
Promover nuevas facilidades de acceso figura entre los principales objetivos de este año, con la instalación de 150 áreas de navegación alámbricas e inalámbricas; a lo cual se suma el desarrollo de la industria nacional de aplicaciones informáticas, y de plataformas con una alta interoperabilidad técnica.
Asimismo, se destacó el surgimiento de la Unión de In-formáticos de Cuba, que cuenta con más de 8000 miembros, y la ampliación de los canales de pago electrónico, que hoy se materializa, entre otras acciones, con la disponibilidad de más de 900 cajeros en 69 municipios, junto a servicios de banca telefónica, banca por internet y banca móvil.
La política integral para la informatización de la so-ciedad cubana fue aprobada por el Consejo de Ministros en febrero de 2017, y de acuerdo con los panelistas, es un proceso en ascenso, que hoy muestra dísimiles soluciones en materia de nuevas tecnologías, así como el reto de ga-rantizar cada vez más su perfeccionamiento.

Officials and heads of projects from Cuban organizations and entities spelled out Monday the latest breakthroughs in the computerization
process of the island nation, its economic and social impact, as well as the basic work lines related to the development of the necessary technological infrastructure, digital services and contents.
As part of the opening session of the 17th “Informática 2018” International Convention and Fair, the main outcomes of the e-government and citizen care programs were revealed, coupled with the results in the computerization of all public services, equipment assembly lines and terminals, as well as digital television projects that are presently reaching out to as many as 7 million inhabitants.
During a roundtable chat, Cuba’s Deputy Minister of Communications Luis Perdomo explained that the advance of telecommunications in Cuba has been boosted up by the enhancement of Internet access to the Cuban population, which now counts on 673 Wi-Fi hotspots run by ETECSA across the island, plus 771 Internet navigation lounges.
The promotion of new access conveniences stands out as one of the main goals to be achieved this year, following the installation of 150 wired-up and wireless navigation areas. They add up to the development of the national industry of IT applications and highly inter-operational technical platforms.
At the same time, the foundation of Cuba’s IT Personnel League –with over 8,000 members- and the enhancement of e-payment channels, among other actions currently underway, hinge on the availability of more than 900 ATMs in 69 municipalities, together with telephone banking services, Internet banking services and mobile banking.
The comprehensive policy for the computerization of the Cuban society was passed by the Council of Ministers in February 2017. According to the panelists, this is a process on the rise that’s currently showcasing new solutions in terms of new technologies, let alone the challenge to further upgrade those services.

La Convención y Feria Internacional Informática 2018 es un evento de alto contenido científico que este año llega a su décimo séptima edición, bajo el lema Por un desarrollo sostenible, que respalda el objetivo de informatizar la sociedad cubana.
The “Informatica 2018” International Convention and Fair is a highly scientific event that will be holding its tenth edition this year under a motto that reads “Toward Sustainable Development”, which backs up the goal of computerizing the Cuban society.

“ICT OVERVIEW IN CUBA” CONTEST
El concurso “Panorama de las TIC en Cuba” tiene como objetivos promover la participación de las entidades naciona-les y personal vinculado al desarrollo de las TIC en el país, convirtiendo la misma en un estímulo al proceso creador, inno-vador y científico-técnico; exponer y dar a conocer los principales desarrollos que en el área de las TIC se producen o han producido en CUBA; e ilustrar el avance que nuestra sociedad viene alcanzando en esa área.
Para ello se seleccionaron pro-yectos de investigación, desarrollo e innovación vinculados a las distintas esferas de las TIC que contribuyen a la integración tecnológica y fueron concebidos y desarrollados en el país. Teniendo en cuenta su carácter inno-vador, alto valor añadido, así como su contribución a la sustitución de impor-taciones y a las exportaciones.
The “Cuba ITC Overview” contest intends to foster the engagement of national entities and individuals linked to the advance of ITCs in Cuba, thus turning it into an encouragement to creativity, innovation and scientific-technical progress. It pursues the objective of spreading out all main breakthroughs in IT technology in Cuba, either realized or in the offing, let alone illustrate the progress our society has made in this field.
Therefore, a number of research, development and innovation projects linked to different IT fields have been handpicked from the many developments currently in the works across the country, based on their level of innovation, value added and contribution to the process of replacing imports and generating new exports.
