    Product Dynamics

    Who is RISO?

RISO launched the first ever digitalduplicator 25 years ago. Its RISOGRAPH007 quickly became a fixture in manyschools. Today RISO is a billion dollarcompany and a leader in the US digitalduplicator marketplace with more than a60% share. RISO also has a strongpresence in Europe and South America.RISO is more than just a duplicator vendor.ts products now span entry-level printing

systems targeted at charities and othernon-profits through to high-speed, highmage quality systems for print-for-payusers.

Rather than focusing purely on speeds-and-feeds, the duplicator sector hasnstead poured its R&D efforts into quality with true 600 dpi output capability sophisticated line screening, half-toningand other image manipulation options.Their other major focus has beenntegration of duplicators with networks,

allowing users to submit images to createdigital masters and print jobs remotely. This has had the effect of making the onceowly duplicator a muchmore attractive proposition tothe commercial printer, who,n the past, may havedismissed the duplicator onthe grounds of image qualityalone.

    The MZ790 in Co ntext:

The concept of good imagequality and new networkingfeatures, coupled with theduplicators traditional highspeed and durability, is onethat RISO believes has astrong market backing. Thisnext-generation duplicator

company has placed its bet in this areawith a strategy called CommunicationsColor. The new twin color MZ790 digitalduplicator, as well as its headline catching105 ppm full-color production printer theHC5000, are solid realizations of this plan.

Spot Color Taken to the Next Level:

While producing spot color output onduplicators is not a new phenomenon, theRISO MZ790 brings the function to the

masses. Up until the launch of the MX790,producing documents with two colors hasbeen a rather hit and miss operation withusers having to manually create the twomaster templates. This has scared offmany unskilled users from attempting thistask.

The BERTL 5-star award winning MZ790ends this struggle, with its innovativeEasy2Color system. No longer do usershave to attempt to split out a document intoblack and non-black portions. Instead,

whether the user is at the device or at thedesktop, the process is as simple aschoosing a single button on the printer

driver or using a colored pen and making afew marks on the original, with the MZ790doing the rest.

For the first time, users can feel confidentthat they can produce high quality spotcolor output in a matter of minutes.

Few dispute the benefit of adding color to adocument, be it a church newsletter or atest paper for a school. RISOs Easy2Colorhas just made the process a reality for

    many more of its customers.

    MZ790 or V8000?

Those familiar with RISO may know thatthe company already offers a twin colorduplicator called the V8000. The RISOMZ790 is not meant to replace the V8000.t is designed to complement it, offering the

same type of functionality to its corecustomer base that the V8000 provides tocommercial print-for-pay users. In fact, theMZ790 is not only considerably less

expensive than the V8000, the MZ790 alsofeatures N-up and Multi-Up printing fromthe desktop and a sizzling 150 ppmmaximum throughput speed, another firstfor the duplicator industry. That is not tosay that the MZ790 will steal away sales ofthe V8000. The V8000 is targeted atcommercial print environments: it offerstrue 600 dpi output, inner-press technologyfor better solid area printing, tighterregistration via the sheet grip mechanism, and support for smaller paper sizes in twin-color mode.

    New to the MZ790:

The RISO MZ790 offers new features andmprovements that will resonate with thismanufacturers core educational, religious, and other non-profit customers. Forstarters, the RISO MZ790 boasts

impressive performance: a top throughputrate of 150 ppm and 57 second twin-colormaster making time versus 120 ppm and150 seconds for the V8000. Its new, highlyfunctional Easy 2Color application supports5 different ways to separate color from asingle copy. Teachers, for example, willfind the ability to draw the area they wish tocolor particularly easy and intuitive. And iftheyre not sure of their adjustments, theycan view the image produced on eachdrum with the console preview function.

Other console functions include the RISOeditor, which allows more complex controlof the 2-color separation process and alsoprovides other image adjustmentpossibilities. Also new is the MZ790soverlay and stamp functions which allowsaved images to be recalled and re-used great for reproducing forms and letterheads.

On the hardware side, the MZ790incorporates RISOs iQuality system, which

allows two-way communication betweenthe supplies and the controller. RF tagsembedded on the ink bottles and mastercore send and receive information. Whattype of information is captured by the RFtransceivers? They track ambientconditions, such as temperature and thecharacteristics of the supplies. Acting onthis, the MZ790 can control the printpressure and the power of the thermalhead to assure optimal print quality.

    Product Dynamics

    Like an MFP

With its new sophisticated on-demandfunctions, the RISO MZ790 digitalduplicator takes on features more typicallyfound on MFPs, and in some instancesgoes to a level that the MFP can notcompete against. For example, users canscan images into memory, and thenperform editing functions on the savedmage. From the high-res LCD screen, theycan define an area from the image, then

choose from a palette of editing functionsto change the color, add a border, or deletethe area (inside or outside). The resultingmage can be saved or even combined withanother image in overlay mode. When itcomes time to creating a copy, a teacher, administrator, or other front-office workercan call up the image.

The RISO MZ790 also supports the newcost-saving Link Print communicationsfeature. Reminiscent of the routingfunctions found on some manufacturers

printer/MFP devices, the Link Print sendsobs that fall below a pre-configured jobength to standard printers, thus saving onmaster costs while long production runsare handled by their more cost efficientduplicator engine.

The benefits of color can still be realized ata fraction of the cost of a full color page us-

ing the RISO MZ790's Easy2Color mode.

    Paper Handling

The RISO MZ790 handles up to 1000sheets in both its input and output trays, which are found on the left and right side ofthe duplicator respectively. The metal pa-per handling trays are well built and de-signed to handle the high volumes that thisdevice will be subjected to.

Minimum paper size varies, depending onwhether the RISO MZ790 is used as a sin-gle color printer or dual. For single, it canhandle paper sizes down to 3.97 x

5.81 (11x148 mm). In dual, the minimumsize bumps up to 7.16 x 10.12 (182 x257 mm). Maximum size for both modes isedger size. Paper weights range from 13to 110 lb index (46 g/m

    2to 210 g/m

    2).

On the input side, the tray automaticallyowers when the user presses the tray de-scent button. To the left of this, there is

also a switch for choosing between thickand regular paper stock. For the outputarea, the RISO MZ790 employs specialflaps to handle the high speeds at whichthe RISO MZ790 is processing the paper.Besides catching the paper, the flaps alsoslow the descent of the paper onto thestack, allowing for additional drying time.

Our only quibble with the paper handling isthat RISO doesnt offer an option for addi-tional paper capacity. While other vendorsoffer this, it is a minor drawback, probablymore of an issue with the print-for-pay mar-ket than the non-profit world.

1000-sheet output trays are designed tocatch paper with special flaps.

The tray descent button lowers the inputtray.

    Master and Print Drums

We believe maintenance of the RISOMZ790 is well within the capabilities of non-technical user i.e., the front-office staff. The print drum chassis for this two-colorduplicator is conveniently located in thefront of the machine. Replacing ink is a

non-threatening operation for average us-ers. They simply release the unit by press-ng the unlock button and the assembly

slides out with minimal effort. The ink car-tridge is found in the center of the drum, and it can be quickly removed and re-inserted.

The uses master stencil is collect in a bin.The RISO MZ790 reports on the consolewhen the bin is full.

Replacing the master stencil paper is reallyno more complicated than loading a papertray. But users have to ensure that thisspecial paper is correctly positioned.

RFID (above) embedded in the ink cartridgecommunicates the ink color (see below) as

well as other environmental data to theRISO controller.

    Paper Handling

The master making unit, found below theprint drum, holds the special paper onwhich the image is stenciled -- more pre-cisely, holes burnt into it by the imagingaser before being transferred to theprint drums. BERTL found that replacingthe master paper is just slightly more com-plicated than loading a standard paper tray positioning the paper below the cutters the only additional task.

Finally, theres the issue of accidentally

nstalling the wrong color ink cartridge.RISOs innovative RF tags -- embedded inthe ink cartridge -- make this practicallympossible. The ink color information isrelayed to the device and displays on LCDconsole.

The drum-and-ink assembly is accessed from the frontof the RISO MZ790 and slide out with minimal effort.

    Accessibility

While the RISO MZ790 doesnt supportspecific ADA features such as liftinghandles or a larger external console thebasic design of the device lends itself touse by those with physical disabilities. TheRISO device accomplishes through a set ofarge console buttons that duplicate manyof the functions available from the LCDtouch screen, including master making, printing, drum adjustment, proof copy, andspeed controls.

Note: Unfortunately, the 150-ppm option isonly accessible from the touch screen.

Overall, users with limited dexterity can usethe large buttons to operate the RISOMZ790.

Large buttons allow those with physical disabilities to oper-ate the RISO MZ790.

ts not surprising that networksecurity features are not high onthe list of features demanded bybuyers of this device whenyou consider RISO has targetedthe non-corporate market.Accordingly, the RISO MZ790doesnt support options for IP orMAC filtering or LDAP integrationor SSL and IPsec encryption andauthentication.

While some of these featuresmay yet work their way into thisproduct especially since high-schools are becoming more andmore wired the device doessupport a practical security feature for theeducational market.

When making copies of test or quizzes, teachers can destroy the master templatecurrently on the drums. This is a manualoperation that does require a little bit ofdrilling into the RISO MZ790 menu

hierarchy. Other vendors support this as anautomatic feature, and we hope that RISOwill eventually incorporate this idea into theRISO MZ790.

    Security

Users can destroy the master stencilsthrough the confidential operation.

As with security, the remote devicemanagement features are limited. Again, considering the market, this device wasntended to be managed and operated atthe console, with teacher, administrators, and other front-office staff making theircopies in the copy room.

But the RISO MZ790 is a network deviceand users can submit jobs remotely. Tohelp users learn the status of the device, the RISO MZ790 comes with an embeddedweb server display. The browser displaysbasic device status e.g., current faultand busy/idle state and little else.Administrators have a little more controland can use the browser to set network

    configuration values.

We understand the need to completelyoperate this device from the console and the interface is well designed. But itmay make sense to allow some of theadministrative functions like settingdefault values and the consoles one touchbuttons to be accessed from the Web.

That way, the technicalexpert, who may very likelynot be located on-site at theschool or religiousorganization, could configure

the RISO MZ790 withoutmaking a service call.

    Device Management

The RISO MZ790s Web interface providesbasic status information.

    RISO Monito r:

A more practical solution to remotemonitoring is provided with the RISOMonitor. This software sensibly balancesthe need to have some basic monitoringand status capability without overwhelmingthe non-technical users with extraneousnformation. This is a Windows applicationthat can quickly be installed on a usersdesktop PC or laptop. The software can beconfigured to pop-up when any event from

a short list is triggered e.g.,communications error, power off, operationerror, etc.

The software can also be launched fromthe notification bar. Before submitting aprint job, users can quickly see whether thedevice is currently busy, resource levels, and the current print memory used. Once aob is submitted, the RISO monitor displaysthe current copy count.

    Device Management

The RISO monitor can also be configured tolaunch when a set of selected conditions

    are triggered.

The Window-based RISO Monitor providesmore extensive device state information. Itcan be launched from the notification areaon the Windows desktop.

    Copy

Duplicators operate differently. Digitalphotocopiers and network printers arebased on a reusable photoreceptive drum, charged toner which gets attracted to thedrum and then transferred to the paper, and finally a fuser unit which melts thetoner on to the paper. Digital duplicatorswork by creating a stencil or master fromthe scanned original. The master is a thinsheet with tiny micropores (holes) burnednto them by an imaging laser. Ink pressedthrough these holes form the image of the

    original, like a stencil.

So making copies from the console is reallya two step process: the master is firstmade and then the copies are printed. Tomake this process more copier like, theRISO MZ790 can be put into auto-process mode by default, so that the usercan place the document in the platen, enterthe number of copies, and let the RISOMZ790 carry on. However, if the master isnot satisfactory perhaps a misalignmentbetween the two drums the auto-

process can turn into a costly error. Moreikely, the default mode will be set to semi-auto, wherein the RISO MZ790 willproduce a proof copy and then stop, waiting for the operator to either adjust themage using the console interface or elsecontinue with the copy job.

    Master Making :

From the master making screen, usershave access to many of the functions thatare found in copy mode on a standard

copier-MFP. Like those device, there arecontrols to select image format (text, photo,text-photo, or pencil), adjust contrast,reduce/enlarge the image, and select thepager size. Additional functions include theability to create a multi-up i.e., multiplemages on a singe sheet, from 2-on-1 to16-on-1. One option not normally found on

a copier machine lets users select the dotprocess type, which control the specifichalf-tone patterns.

Like on a standard copier/MFP, the RISOMZ790 supports N-up printing. With its

ledger size capability users can print2 images on 1 sheet of paper to

    reduce costs per copy.

The basic master making screen providesall the essential controls for creating themaster stencils for each drum. The one

touch buttons found in the direct accessarea preview, editor, and Easy 2Color can be configured using the RISO MZ790s

    Admin interface.

    Easy 2Color:

The tedious part of 2-color master makingused to be the manual process of creatingtwo documents, each mapped to a specificcolor drum, and then scanning thedocuments. RISO has introduced a singlestep process that lets average users, working with a single document, generateseparate masters for each drum. RISOcalls their application Easy 2Color.

With RISO's Easy 2Color process, usershave five different methods for colorseparation. There are, however, really onlytwo underlying techniques for separation:contrast detection and explicit areadefinition. The scanner does not detect

color, instead it separate colors based oncontrast levels. Contrast level separation isused in the red color, hand writing-1,and hand writing-2 functions of Easy2Color. The other technique requires theuser to explicitly draw a curve (using aspecial pen) around the area of thedocument that will be mapped to a specificdrumi.e., everything inside that area willbe mapped to one drum, but everythingoutside to another. Area separation is thebasis for the specified area and

    separation sheet functions.

The Easy 2Color function allows users to quickly perform color separation using a singlesheet of paper and a special color pen Caption: Sample original showing an area tracedwith the special red pen. And the resulting color copy produced.

    Red Color:

The simplest function to use. In thisfunction, the RISO MZ790 maps the redportion of the document to drum 2 and theblack portion to drum 1

    Hand Writ ing -1:

Users mark up a monochrome documentwith a special red pen. The originaldocument is sent to drum 1, the

handwritten part is sent to drum 2.

    Hand Writ ing -2:

The same as hand writing-1, but assumesthe copy was generated by a RISO device.

    Preview Funct ion :

After the image has been scanned in Easy2Color mode, the RISO MZ790 allowsusers to view the image in preview modefrom the LCD screen. This is a powerful

function that will help user avoid costlyerrors and wasted master materials. Userscan see each of the separate mastermages, before it is created on the specialstencil paper. They can zoom in on specificparts of the image and scroll through themage using the soft keys display along thebottom of the Preview window.

The powerful preview function lets usersview the image created on each of the RISO

    MZ790s drums.

    Specif ied Areas:

Using the recommended pen, users circlethe area they wish to map drum 1.Everything outside that is mapped to drum2. This feature was very simple to use. Theone caveat is the sensitivity of the device tothe color of the marking pen. RISO staffadvised BERTL that they had difficultyfinding a pen that matched thecharacteristics of the pen used by theJapanese factory. They further advised that

a pen will be provided with every devicesold. We would recommend that theschool, church etc buys a stock load ofthese pens as a back up.

    Separat ion Sheet:

f marking up the original is not possible, this method allows users to use a secondsheet of paper on which the delimited areas drawn.

    The RISO Edito r:

Another powerful new feature available onthe RISO MZ790 is the RISO Editor. ThisLCD-based application moves beyond thefeatures available with the Easy 2Color.Think of the Easy 2Color as an on-the-flyfunction for non-technical users and theRISO Editor for power users who wish toperform more complex processing.

The RISO Editor is activated from the basicMaster Making Screen. After users placethe document on either the platen or the

optional ADF, they click on the Editor softbutton and select scan new page. UnlikeEasy 2Color, with the RISO Editor colorseparation and other functions areperformed entirely from the LCD screen. The final image can either be used toproduce the master or saved in the storagesystem for later retrieval. The editing

functions can be broadly classified intothree categories: color mapping, imageprocessing, and graphics.

From the console users can specify areausing either the 2-point or multi-point func-

tion (above). Once selected, they can applyfrom the editing palette both color mapping

and other graphics operations. Note: TheImage Color Selection icon is third from thetop, and the image/frame/screen is below

With the Image screen/frame/screenfunction, users can select the type ofprocessing to apply either text or photo and the dot process for halftoning (seethe picture)

    Graphical Funct ions:

The RISO Editor also supports severalbasic graphic operations. Users can

surround the selected area with blockframe, they can move the selected area, and they can delete the selected area.

    Print Drum Adjustment Controls:

Color-to-color registration on the Z790 isvery tight at most 1/128 (.2mm). But itmay be that case that after the image iscreated whether through Easy 2Color orthe RISO editor---and a proof copyproduced, the user may have to adjust theprint drum positions. This is accomplishedusing the horizontal and vertical navigationhard keys found to the right of the console, one set for each drum. The horizontal keys

move the drum in increments of 3/8 (10mm) and the vertical keys in 10/32 (15mm).

Our only issue with these controls is thatthey assume the document is in landscapemode. For portrait documents, horizontaladjustments are made through the vertical

keys and vertical through the horizontal.

Navigation keys let users adjust the twodrums when the color-to-color

    alignment is off.

Desktop users send jobs to theRISORINC3 via a Windows based GDIprint controller. A GDI print driver uses thedesktop CPU to process the printob ,rather than converting the file into aPCL or PostScript The RISORINC3controller is powered by a 133Mhzprocessor and comes with 64MB RAM.

From the main driver screen, users cancontrol whether the process is fullyautomatic i.e., creates master and prints

or semi-automatic the RISO MZ790prints only a proof copy. The latter is likelyto be used when printing remotely, allowingthe user to check the proof copy beforecompleting the run.

The users can also store a print job directlyon the device or perform combinationstore-and-print operations. The storage tagbutton found on the main screen lets usersassign a label to the stored image.

We found the rotated 180-degree optionparticularly useful. We noticed that forimages with heavy coverage on the leadingedge (where the paper first comes intocontact with the master drum), the copiestended to stick and then cause paper jams.By clicking on this checkbox, the documentis rotated so that the heavy coverage is onthe opposite edge, thereby eliminating thesticking problem.

    Programming:

Another useful feature is the programsettings (which is also available from theconsole). Program settings allow users todivide one original into several groups, andto specify a different number of copies orsets for each groupe.g., printing differentnumber of tests for each class. Users candefine up to 50 groups, with up to 99 setsper group.

Users can send print jobs directly to stor-age, or they can select a store-and-printoperation.

    Image Quali ty:

The driver supports a high level of controlover line screening, including the ability tomanipulate half tones by changing thescreen frequency and pitch angle. RISOadvised us that this capability wasdeveloped by RISO for their digitalduplicators using a RISO exclusivecompression technology. While this canhad a major effect on image quality, theuser needs a knowledge of line screentechnology before they can make the best

of this feature. Unlike dpi, which in generalt is safe to assume that the higher theresolution the higher the image quality in

most cases the same is not true of lpi. While 72 lpi may produce output that looksmore grainy than a laser printer, 200 lpi insome instances can render the output fartoo dark for use due to the overconcentration of ink dots on the page.

While image quality was not to the samehigh level as that achieved by RISOs true600dpi engine commercial print models theoutput was to an acceptable quality onmost work. Grayscales were reproduced

well with a slightly grainy look on the mid tolower range shades.

To assist with legibility of text RISOincludes various text image quality optionsincluding the ability to embolden any textelements on the page. This feature wasfound to work very well.

An example of the image quality from the printerdriver: (Are you able to put a colored ringaround the bottom two boxes on the screenshotwhich offer text image quality change options.

Text can be further enhanced using theRISO drivers various image quality settings.

The RISO MZ790 does provide the abilityto scan images directly into the storagearea. Contrast, dot process, Easy 2Color,and Preview functions are available in scanmode. The idea here is to quickly bring adocument into storage and retrieve it laterwhen making a master to incorporate moreextensive editing functions. This is also theway in which print on demand functionalitys achieved.

    Overlay and Stamping :

One reason for creating a directory ofstored images is for use with the RISOMZ790s overlay and stamping functions. With overlay, the scanned image (alongwith its color mapping association) isplaced as background for the variable partof the image, taken from a separate storedimage or from the document currently inthe scanner. Letterheads and other officialdocuments for which a common back-

ground is needed is the most likelyapplication of overlaying. Stamping worksslightly differently. It involves using a savedimage, which is put into the background asa single color.

mages can be scanned directly into theRISO MZ790s storage system. They can beretrieved later or addition editing. Storedmages can be used in overlay and stamp-ng applications.

As the world becomes ever-more orientedtowards color output, RISO has puttogether a compelling twin-color digitalduplicator targeted at delivering theadvantages of multi-colored output, whilemaintaining a low cost per page model anda user-friendly process.

Users will be instantly impressed by thetouchscreen interface and the high degreeof functionality which will make the userfeel like they are operating a piece of high

    tech equipment.

Also as important as the high techcapabilities, was the way in which theadded functionality has been addressed ina user-friendly format avoiding scaring offtraditional duplicator users, who in the pastmay have been more accustomed to usingthree or four hard-key buttons to get the jobdone.

The twin feathers in the cap of the MZ790must be the Easy2Color system and the

    editing capability at the touchscreen.

The Easy2Color and editing process bothfrom the walk-up touchscreen and from thedesktop are leagues ahead of competingunits at time of test. We were especiallympressed by the ability to check eachstage of the process, a feature that couldavoid costly wasted masters and makeusers feel more at ease.

RISO could also teach a manufacturer ortwo a thing about building user-friendliness

nto its printer drivers. While not ascomplex in its portfolio of functions as acolor laser alternative, the RISO MZ790printer driver provides the user with two-way communication informing themthrough the medium of icons how themage will be affected after each featureselection.

This will demystify the process for noviceusers and give them the courage to try outmore of the advanced image adjustmentfeatures they might may have beenreluctant to try if left in a blind state (notknowing what the impact would be afteruntil the output is created.)

What We Would Like To See:

While the network management is betterthan duplicator customers have seen in the

past, it is still behind the capabilitiesprovided by some manufacturers of moretraditional office products.

While this may not be an issue for manysmaller users, a school technicaldepartment may like the ability to havebetter control over the device from aremote location, allowing them to possiblyremedy problems without having to wastetime going to remote parts of the school.

We would also like to see more security

measures built into the device. In a worldwhere IT theft is becoming an epidemic, ITdepartments are becoming ever morevigilant about locking down every avenueof attack on the core network. While theRISO provides access to bona fide users, italso provides a gateway onto the networkwhich is not as well guarded as that onsome other units.

The rest of our wish list, such as lesssensitivity in the pen area marking tool andthe area of confusion with the registration

adjustment of the two drums, are more acase of would be even better if it did thisrather than the device is deficient becauseit does not do this.

    Summing Up
