Dennis FralleyComputer Engineer

After I graduated as a computer engineer fifteen years ago, I became a computer teacher at a school. I loved teaching, and I still enjoy doing a few hours a week, but I found that most of the really interesting work was in industry. I accepted a permanent job in the computer industry six years later. There I saw that real problems are not in laboratories but in the places where products are made. So I moved into building computers and computers programs. Three years later, I was an expert. I continue to teach but in a different way, taking real life into the classroom.

I work about ten hours a day. I enjoy what I do so I don´t have a problem with doing some work at home. I start by checking my e-mail before breakfast, do some work on the computer and then go to the office. My days are very busy – I read a lot and talk to many people. I consider that listening to others is very important. In fact, many of my ideas come to my mind when I´m doing that.

When I´m not working, I like listening to jazz and doing activities like writing this description of myself. I also find that teaching and math problems are very good for keeping my mind going.

Many people are increasingly thirsty for what is considered the healthiest, and often most expensive, water on the grocery shelf. However, instead of consuming four billion gallons of bottled water a year, we need to start thinking about what all those bottles are doing to the planet.

Water bottles, made from natural gas and petroleum, are bad for the environment because their production wastes valuables resources. The Earth Policy Institute in the US has calculated that it takes about 1.5 million barrels of oil to make the water bottles Americans use each year. And unfortunately, only about 23 percent of bottles are used again.

In fact, bottled water isn´t necessary because most municipal water is so good that nobody needs to imports a single bottle. Drinking eight glasses of bottled water a day could cost up to $1,400 annually. The same amount of tap water would cost about 49 cents.

Another serious problem is that the more bottled people drink, the less political support there will be for maintaining public water supplies. Access to cheap, clean water is basic to a country´s health.

Some local governments in the US have begun to fight back. Recently, San Francisco´s Mayor prohibited his city´s departments and agencies from buying bottled water. Likewise, a similar order has been given in Salt Lake City. The real change, though, will come when millions of people realize that they can save money and the planet, if they only stop drinking bottled water and turn on the tap.

People should be aware that the country has some of the best public water supplies in the world.

31. What is the journalist trying to do in the text?

A. explain why bottled water has negative effectsB. demonstrate that people drink too much waterC. prove that bottled water is safer than tap waterD. imply that local politicians prefer imported water

32. Why would someone read this article?

A. to find out why people should spend less on waterB. to learn why manufacturers use oil to make bottlesC. to understand why consuming soft drinks is expensiveD. to decide why is important to choose tap water

33. According to the author, bottled water is a problem because

A. it is difficult to destroy the bottles B. production needs millions of barrels of oilC. it causes considerable damages to nature D. some people re-use dirty bottles

34. According to the author, what may happen if people drink more tap water?

A. Local governments will save money on importsB. Community water programs may not be cutC. The country will have safer and cheaper bottled waterD. Less money will be spent on healthcare

In 1957, an engineering company started studying the possibility to join Britain and France through a tunnel under the sea. It would have two trains for passengers as well as a small service train. In 1973 the ideas went into action and the hard work began. A short time later, they were stopped because there wasn't enough money to complete the project.

In 1984, several companies showed their ideas to re-start the project: two variations of railway, a road and big bridge over the English Channel. The chosen project was the railway solution that was very similar to the one presented back in 1973. This time with help from both the British and French, a private company began the construction.

thOn January 20 1986, the company TransMancheLink (TML) said that a long tunnel would be constructed. They chose a route from Folkestone in England to Calais in France. This wasn´t the shortest possible way and the company needed to work harder than 13 years before.

It took seven years to complete the Eurotunnel and about 13,000 people worked on it.

stThey two end of the smallest platform met on December 1 1990 and lots of journalists and photographers went to the opening ceremony. Later, in 1991 the two long trains met. The hard work continued and three years later the project was completed.

When the opportunity to work in Japan for 3 months took place, I decided to register. I did not realize the impact it would have on my life and me. The people who know me well all thought that I would not last the three months away from home and in a very different culture. How wrong they were!

On arriving in Tokyo, I immediately liked the new environment. I surprised myself with how much I enjoyed my new way of life.

Three colleagues from the UK joined me. We lived in the same house in an area of Tokyo called Komagome. We did not speak the Japanese language and this led to many interesting tomes in restaurants, on train journeys and generally getting around in Japan. Our first glance of a menu found it impossible to read so we just pointed to a few things and sat in hope. Our food arrived … and kept on arriving. Unknown to us, we had ordered enough to feed 20 people; there were only 4 of us!

One morning I decided to go for a run before work. I took a different way from my known route to extend the run and after 2 hours of running and trying to find my way home, I had to stop a taxi to help me get home. I told the driver I wanted to go Komagome Station, knowing I could direct him to the house from there. I then had to try to explain that I had no money with me and had to go in to the house first to get some money to pay the taxi driver!

L.S. LOWRYLaurence Stephen Lowry was born in Manchester, a city in the north of England, in 1887. He hated school and was happy when he left to work in an office. His colleagues there were friendly and often asked him to go to the cinema or theatre in the evenings but he did not go; he preferred to go to art school.

Lowry loved walking through the city streets, looking at people doing everyday things. He painted these things in his pictures. His parents thought his paintings were very good but nobody ever bought one. Then one day. A man who knew a lot about art bought one and showed it to some people in the art business.Suddenly, many people knew Lowry's paintings, but he could only paintings, but he could only paint in the evenings until he stopped working when he was sixty-five. Then he painted and sold many pictures and earned a lot of money, which he used to help young artists. Now, twenty years after his death, he's one of Britain's favourite artists, but not many people in the other countries know Lowry's work.
