What is "propaganda"?

• Information or publicity put out by an organization or government to spread and promote a policy, idea, doctrine, or cause.

• From the Latin meaning, "for the propagation of faith."

• In 1622 Pope Gregory XV developed this idea when forming a committee of Cardinals to spread (or propagate) the faith.

• How is propaganda usually perceived? Positively or negatively?

• Used often during wars and religious conflicts

• Impacts a large group of people (neighborhood, school, city, state, nation)

• What is an example of propaganda that exists today? Think of positive and negative examples.

Project Criteria

• Choose an issue, belief, policy, law or cause for the subject of the propaganda poster

• Create a composition that visually promotes the message (includes the use of images and words)

• Composition must use strong diagonal angles to create and reinforce a focal point

• Use watercolor, color pencil and acrylic paint to create your poster

• Use a color scheme that is appropriate for your message

• Poster must include a catch phrase and at least one piece of factual information

• Poster needs to be between 9x12" - 12x18" in scale. You determine the shape and size based on your idea.
