QUESTION 2: HOW DOES YOUR MUSIC MAGAZINE REPRESENT PARTICULAR SOCIAL GROUPS?

Who is my target audience?

• My target audience is aged between 17-27 and are both male and female.• They will be interested in going to gigs and festivals with the indie/rock

music to represent this in my magazine I included a competition on my front cover to make it more attractive to the readers

• My audience will also be interested in playing an instrument such a guitar or drums.

• They will shop in places like urban outfitters and asos.

Stereotypes for people who like indie/ rock music

• Hippies • Smokes• Drinks • Does drugs • Anti social • All dress the same• Very spiritual and free• Piercings and tattoos

Mode of address

When taking my photos I had my models look directly into the camera this gave my pictures a more serious vibe it also meant that the audience could engage more with the artist. Although I did also have some more natural poses to show the more laid back side o the genre with photos like my artists playing the guitar.

Camera angles • I have used a range of different camera

angles to attract the attention of my audience when reading the magazine

Mid shot

Long shot Close up

I used a long shot to show my models outfit the outfit I have chosen for her fits my genre and would make the readers of my magazine want to go out and buy these outfits

I used a mid shot as it focuses more on the model in my magazine and how he is posing

Like the mid shot the close up focuses more on the model but instead of the pose it focuses more on the facial expression.

How I have represented these in my magazine

• As I am distributing my magazine through beaur media I didn’t make it clearly visible on my magazine the stereotypes such and drinking and smoking or drug use in terms of pictures. Although I did add it in the article on the double page spread to keep to some of the stereotypes.

• From research earlier on I found that most indie rock magazines do contain some stereotypes of artists in their magazines but in the publications that beaur distribute not many of their front covers include people smoking. In fact none of my pictures include any explicit images.

I did this to counter stereotypes of the indie/rock genre.

Publications such as NME include images of people smoking on their front covers

Mise-en-scene Lighting and location-In my magazine I have got rid of certain stero-types of rock magazine such as dark lighting as you can see from my front cover I have included a picture from my studio shoot instead of one from an outside shoot so the lighting is more harsh. I also chose for most of my main pictures to be ones from the studio shoot again this is for that lighter backdrop and clean cut images

Props and costume- I made sure my models were dressed in more indie and bright clothing to fit in with the indie genre I am trying to portray in my magazine. As you can see most of the colours on my front cover match eg. The colour of megs shirt is similar to the colour of the masthead.

I used props like a guitar and records on my contents page to show the indie genre.

Location• In my magazine the locations I used represented my audience as they are all

locations my audience can relate to for example I used an attic this would be relatable as my target audience would hang out with their friends in their house listening to music etc. one shot was also located around a dinning room table this showed the social side of my target audience .

• I also used a more urban location- a wall outside this represents the more rebellious side to the genre.

Language used in my magazine

In my magazine I have used proper English as I haven’t used any slang but I have made the sentences quite informal so it appeals to my target audience and fits in with the genre I have made the interview on my double page like a talk show interview to make it more interesting. To make it easier and more engaging to read as from research I found that audiences are more likely to read articles if they are split into smaller sections. I have represented different the middle class social group by using good English but I also used language my readers can relate to.I also included bad language in my article this again represents the way my target audience would speak.

Here in my double page spread I have put short questions and short answers to make it easier to read

I have used informal language here to appeal to my audience

The Colour scheme of my magazine

I have used a red, grey and white colour scheme in my magazine this colour scheme is used in most indie/rock magazines such as NME this would make my magazine look familiar to my audience The colour red has connotations of passion and excitement this is how I want my artists to be portrayed as.The colour grey is quite a neutral colour so creates a soft tone.

The price of my magazine

• Lastly the price of my magazine represents my social group I have priced my magazine at £2 as this is an affordable price for someone at school or uni with only a part time job. I believe this is a cheap price for a magazine so will attract costumers.
