What is a magazine?

• A publication that is issued periodically, usually bound in a paper cover, and typically contains essays, stories, poems, etc., by many writers, and often photographs and drawings, frequently specializing in a particular subject or area, as hobbies, news, or sports.

History of magazines • The first ever magazines ' The Gentlemens

Magazine' was published by Erbauliche Monaths Unterredungen . It was launched in 1663 in Germany. The magazine contained all sorts of philosophical and literary articles. Edward Cave was the editor of the magazine and he was the first one to use the term "magazines". In the mid 1800s monthly magazines gained popularity. Since it contained more information then the local newspapers. It had a record of all the monthly events, news, poetry and etc.

Growth and progress of magazine • Manufacturing of the early magazines were done

by an archaic form of the printing press, using large hand engraved wood blocks for printing.When production of magazines increased, entire production lines were created to manufacture these wooden blocks.• Because of the rapid development of magazines,

literary criticism and political debates it gradually started moving towards more opinionatied pieces from the objective newspaper. • Later on because of the rapid demand of magazine

and the revolution of the printing press, magazine were printed through machines

Purpose of a magazine • To foster the retention and attraction of talented

people - their ideas, innovation, and enterprise.• Magazines contain more information then other

newspaper articles because they have different topics for all kinds of readers. • David Blanke a very famous author explained the

main purpose of magazines he said“There is still an illusion to the effect that a magazine is a periodical in which advertising is incidental. But we don’t look at it that way. A magazine is simply a device to induce people to read advertising. It is a large booklet with two departments – entertainment and business. The entertainment department finds stories, pictures, verse, etc. to interest the public. The business department makes the money.'”

Types of magazines • Consumer magazines: they target a specific

audience within the masses of people. They focus on a certain need or interest, such as sports, fashion, health and homes. Examples of consumer magazines are Reader's Digest and Seventeen.• Trade and professional magazines: are published

for readers in professional or business fields. Examples of trade and professional magazines are Publishers Weekly and National Fisherman.• In-house or house organ magazines serve the needs

of employees, clients or members belonging to a specific company or group. Examples of in-house magazines are Avon Hill General and Nintendo Power. Magazines are distributed as paid, nonpaid or controlled, where only certain insiders, determined through a survey, have access to them.
