PAIN: Chronic/ Acute

CHRONIC

Pain lasting more than 6 months in duration. (Long lasting)

ACUTE Pain lasting less than 6 months in duration (Short lasting)

•  THREE types of pain based on where the pain is felt. •  SOMATIC pain • VISCERAL pain • NEUROPATHIC pain

SOMATIC PAIN

• Aggravated by activity and relieved by rest. • Normally from post surgical pain • Described as Dull or aching pain

VISCERAL PAIN

•  Pain that is felt in our body,the internal organs when they are injured:

•  Kidney •  Spleen •  Intestines •  Gallbladder •  Pain described as inflammation, impaction, distention,

etc.

NEUROPATHIC PAIN

•  Pain caused by injury to the Spinal cord and peripheral nerves •  Typically described as feeling”pins and needles”

in area of pain. •  Pain can occur at or below site of injury
