Río no tiene ningún secreto. Su mejor baza es su materia prima, el alucinante trozo de costa –incómodo, complejo, mixto y precioso– en el que se asienta. La primera lección que se aprende al llegar es que la ciudad debe la mayor parte de su belleza al lugar en el que se encuentra. Desde hace 500 años, se ha desperdigado por donde ha podi-do, primero alrededor de la bahía de Guanabara, luego por el litoral abierto al Atlántico y, posteriormente, por todos aquellos rincones que quedaban entre los morros, las montañas, los bosques y las lagunas. En un país sa-biamente descentralizado en el que Brasilia es la cabeza política y la cerebral São Paulo se encarga de las finanzas y los negocios, Río de Janeiro ha sido el tradicional refu-gio artístico y ocioso del país. Con motivo de los Juegos Olímpicos y el inminente Mundial de Fútbol, el enclave carioca ha comenzado a modificar sutilmente su piel en barrios clásicos como Maracaná –donde el Estadio olímpi-co convivirá con un remozado estadio de fútbol–, el cam-pestre Deodoro –adaptado para grandes eventos como la hípica–, Copacabana o Barra de Tijuca, el espacio que más

Rio has no secrets. Its trump card is its wealth of raw ma-terials, the breathtaking coastline –harsh, complex, mixed and beautiful– on which it rests. The first lesson that one learns upon arrival is that the city owes the best part of its beauty to its location. For the last 500 years, it has spread and scattered itself wherever possible. Firstly, around the bay of Guanabara, then along the open Atlantic coastline and subsequently, within all the nooks and crannies re-maining among the hills, mountains, forests and lagoons. It is a wisely decentralised country in which Brasilia is the political head, the intelligent São Paulo takes care of the business and finance and Rio de Janeiro is the traditional artistic and leisure refuge of the country. On occasion of the Olympic Games and the imminent Football World Cup, like a chameleon, this little enclave has already start-ed to subtly change its skin in traditional neighbourhoods, such as Maracaná, where the Olympic Stadium will coexist within a renovated football stadium. The rural Deodoro is being adapted for large events such as horse-racing, Co-pacabana and Barra de Tijuca, the areas due to change the most, will accommodate, amongst other things, the Olym-

Más allá de estos lugares, Río seguirá siendo Río, sutilmente adaptado a la nueva realidad deportiva, sin dar la espalda a la que es una de las escenas artísticas y plásticas más ac-tivas y promocionadas de Latinoamérica. No es fácil hacerse una idea de lo que es la zona centro de la ciudad si no se acude a Ci-nelândia, la plaza que bombea actividad y parece hecha de retazos de otras urbes: a ella, que semeja una hermana del Times Square neoyorquino, se asoma el Teatro Municipal, inspirado en la Ópera de París. Cerca de allí corretea la Avenida Rio Branco, que nos con-ducirá a través de este Río que combina lo viejo –el Convento de San Antonio– con lo nuevo, como la catedral de San Sebastián, un enjambre de vidrieras y cemento con forma de pirámide. En el centro, en el 17 de la calle

Gonçalves Ledo, se encuentra una de las ga-lerías de referencia de Río, A Gentil Carioca. Desde Santa Teresa se obtienen algunas de las mejores panorámicas, sin distorsiones ni trucos: des-de la bocana de la bahía al perfil de Flamen-go, pasando por la favela de Santo Amaro, que se desperdiga desordenadamente por la colina. El Centro Cultural Laurinda Santos Lo-bos, uno de los lugares más emblemáticos de Santa Teresa, cuenta con varios espacios para apreciar Río desde las alturas. Los otros dos miradores son, claro, el Pan de Azúcar (ideal para los atardeceres) y el Cristo Redentor, al que conviene ir a primera hora de la mañana para evitar aglomeraciones. A nivel del mar existe otro Río, el de las pla-yas. Ipanema y Copacabana gozan de una fama estratosférica que no siempre casa con la idea mental que el visitante se ha hecho de ellas antes de visitarlas. Son los arenales más populares, multitudinarios y urbanos, pero no los mejores ni los más jóvenes ni los más

castizos. Sí que hay que conocer sus paseos, auténticas ferias de las vanidades por las que los cariocas desfilan luciendo palmo, peda-leando o corriendo, dejando patente el culto al cuerpo que flota en el ambiente. La vida carioca auténtica se tuesta al sol en la playa de Barra, deportiva –aquí se toman muy en serio el volley, las cometas o el windsurf– , multitudinaria y lozana; o en la cercana de São Conrado, la playa área por excelencia, en cuyo flanco oriental están continuamente aterrizando ala-deltas y parapentes que sal-tan desde el morro de Dois Irmãos. Le Blon es la otra cara de la moneda de Ipa-nema, barrio playero por excelencia y una de las principales zonas comerciales de Río gra-cias a la Rua Visconde de Piraja. En el barrio de Gavea –al norte de la playa de Le Blon–, uno de los sectores bien de la ciudad, se ha-lla la galería Silvia Cintra + box4. Lleva más de veinte años apostando por todo tipo de formatos, siempre con un pie en el producto nacional y con un amplio fondo de obras de todos los artistas que han pasado por ahí.

as well as providing access to an essential part of the neighbourhood’s artistic history. From Santa Teresa you can enjoy some of the best panoramic views: from the mouth of the bay to the profile of Flamengo, also crossing the Santo Amaro favela, which is scattered unevenly across the hillside. The Laurinda Santos Lobos Cultural Centre, one of the most emblematic places in Santa Ter-esa, boasts various spots to appreciate Rio from high up. The other two viewpoints are, obviously, Sugarloaf Mountain and the Christ Redeemer statue, which is best to visit first thing in the morning to avoid the crowds. At sea level a different Rio lives on the beach-es. Ipanema and Copacabana enjoy strat-ospheric fame which doesn’t always match the mental picture visitors have of them be-fore arriving. They are the most popular and most urban beaches, but they’re not the best, nor the newest or even the most traditional.

Of course one has to go and walk along their shores, and see a real demonstration of the Cariocas’ vanity. Watch them walking, cycling or running, clearly showing off the body cul-ture which thrives in the air. The authentic Carioca life can be found bathing in the sun on the busy and fresh sporty beach of Barra –they take volleyball, kiting and windsurfing very seriously here−; or in the nearby São Conrado, on whose eastern side wingliders and paragliders are continuously landing af-ter jumping off the Dois Irmãos hill. Le Blon is the flip side of Ipanema’s coin, an excellent beach resort and one of Rio’s main shopping areas thanks to the Rua Visconde de Piraja. In the Gavea district, one of the nicest parts of the city, the Silvia Cintra + Box 4 gallery is found. It has been exhibiting all types of format for over 20 years, always with a bias for national product with pieces by all the artists who have passed by.
