BRIEFING ROOM – MANUEL CAEIRO

En esta exposición el artista portugués Manuel Caeiro, un preeminente creador de la escena pictórica contemporánea, cuestiona y extiende las fronteras y orígenes de la pintura: sus temas y soportes más tradicionales, sus limitaciones formales y estructurales y su pragmatismo y su envolvente objetividad que tan a menudo son contenidas por el lienzo en sí mismo. En Briefing Room es la pintura la que es al mismo tiempo sujeto y objeto, forma y contenido, lienzo y estructura, el objetivo principal y último de una acción creadora siendo ésta al mismo tiempo su propio agente y argumento. En palabras de Manuel Caeiro: “El contenido no yace bajo las obras, está en las obras. Aquí el contenido es la obra”

Tomando una fragmentación circular la cual es representativa del proceso del artista, y transversal para los diferentes soportes y disciplinas, esta exposición contiene siete trabajos que componen y revelan varios pasos de un modo creativo, único y particular. Nos encontramos un boceto pintado directamente en la pared de la galería, un dibujo de tiza sobre pizarra que sirve como borrador para esbozar toda la exposición, una escultura que proporciona la materialización de los elementos que aparecen así mismo en otra de las obras expuestas, pero ahora en tres dimensiones, así como varias pinturas que se deconstruyen y desmenuzan entre si, en un mar de referencias y múltiples significados que se refuerzan y enriquecen continuamente.

Esta multiplicidad revela una urgencia intencionada que es programada, ambiciosa y liberadora y que aquí está objetivada en una clara ampliación del propio proceso creativo y pictórico.

Caeiro nos guía hacia el descubrimiento de los orígenes y las motivaciones, los efectos más profundos y los resultados, coincidencias y desvelos de una metodología que es sui generis aunque representativa, compartiendo con nosotros y debatiendo su propio origen, sus impulsos y su naturaleza más íntima. Y de este modo todo es transformado y revelado: la forma en su más elevado contenido, lo plástico en su mayor sentido, desde la naturaleza bidimensional a una escultura más profunda—y en el fondo esta es la realización más seria posible.

Caeiro hace todo esto con nosotros, en nuestra presencia en un proceso en vivo. Con seriedad y ambición, comparte una extensión de fronteras que previamente eran cercanas, pero que finalmente aquí y ahora desaparecen y se fusionan en una armonía multifacética y prolífica. El paisaje resultante de este acercamiento multiplicador y retador es formado en un campo expandido por excelencia: ahora libre de elementos condicionantes y de limitaciones formales, coherencias necesarias o restricciones de orden o disciplina. Y si por un lado la introspección y la correlación habitual de su trabajo son fuertemente explorados y desarrollados – emergiendo ampliados y reforzados – el artista también declara ahora una nueva fluidez y calidad orgánica, elementos que son claramente enriquecedores en su camino y su trabajo.

SOBRE EL ARTISTA

Manuel Caeiro (Évora - Portugal, 1975). Entre sus exposiciones individuales caben destacar aquellas realizadas en el Palácio Vila Flor, Guimarães, Portugal, en la Lurixs Gallery, Río de Janeiro, Brasil (DownTown, 2009), en la Carlos Carvalho Arte Contemporânea Gallery, Lisboa, Portugal (12 000 m2 dentro de um T0, 2011, Welcome to my Loft, 2007) y en el Museo Nacional Portugués de Historia Natural de Lisboa (Casas da Caparica, 2005). En cuanto a sus exposiciones colectivas caben mencionar: MACUF – Museo de Arte Cotemporáneo, La Coruña, Spain, comisariada por Paulo Reis (Fiat Lux - Iluminación y Creación, 2010), en la Fundación Barrié de la Maza, La Coruña, España (La Colección, 2011), el Museo de Arte Moderno, Río de Janeiro, Brasil, comisariada por Luiz Camillo Osorio y Marta Mestre (Terceira metade, 2011), y en el Centro de Arte Manuel de Brito (À Volta do Papel, 2008) y la Carlos Carvalho Arte Contemporânea Gallery (Surrounding Matta-Clark, 2006). Su obra se encuentra en las colecciones de Culturgest, Lisboa; la Fundación PLMJ, Lisboa; la del Banco Sabadell, en Barcelona entre otras.

In this exhibition the Portuguese artist Manuel Caeiro, a preeminent creator on the contemporary pictorial art scene, questions and extends the frontiers and origins of painting: its most traditional subjects and supports, its structural and formal limitations and its pragmatic and objectivised enclosing that are so often contained within the canvas itself. In Briefing Room it is painting itself that is the subject and object, form and content, canvas and structure, the initial and ultimate aim of a questioning and creative action, with the latter itself being simultaneously its own active agent and argument. In Caeiro's words: “The subject is not underlying to the works, it is in the works. Here the subject is the work.”

In taking on a circular fragmentation which is representative of the artist's process itself, and transversal to different supports and disciplines, this exhibition contains seven works that compose and reveal the several different steps in a creative, unique and particular course. We encounter a sketch painted directly onto the gallery wall, a chalk drawing on slate that is the draft for the outline of the whole exhibition, a sculpture that provides an embodiment for the elements dealt with in another work, which is also present, and now in three dimensions, as well as several paintings that are mutually shattered and deconstructed, in a sea of references and multiple meanings that are continuously reinforced and enriched.

This multiplicity reveals a programmatic, ambitious and liberating intentional urgency, here objectivised in a clear broadening of the creative and pictorial process itself.

Caeiro leads us to the discovery of the origins and motivations, the deepest effects and the results, coincidences and the unfoldings of a methodology that is sui generis yet representative, sharing with us and debating its own origin, its impulses and its most intimate nature. And thus everything is transformed and unveiled: form in its most elevated content, plasticity in its greatest sense, the two-dimensional nature in a more profound sculpture -- and deep down this is its most serious realization possible.

Caeiro does all this with us, in our presence, in a live process. With seriousness and ambition, he shares an extending of frontiers that previously were touching, but which here and now finally disappear and are fused together in prolific and multifaceted harmony. The landscape resulting from this multiplied and challenging approach is formed in an open field par excellence: now free of conditioning elements and formal limitations, necessary coherences or restrictions of order or discipline. And if on the one hand the self-reference and correlation habitual in his work are strongly explored and developed -- thus emerging more broadened and strengthened -- the artist also now states a new fluidity and organic quality, elements which are clearly enrichments in his course and respective work.
