    1or #$ years now( 'errance 2ool ut03 4cott has called music his 5ob. 6

rapper( tour manager and talent manager( ool ut0 has generated a lot of

bu00 and revenue for himself and other local artists. * sat down with him to

try to understand what7s made him so successful( and why there aren7t a lot

    of rappers in his position.

8hen did you reali0e that you could make a living o+ music?

*t kind of happened by accident. 1irst we started doing it and putting out

records as a hobby. 'hen( as we got more serious about it( we had to 9gure

out if it was going to stay a hobby or if it was going to be a 5ob. 8e decided

that it was time to put it out in retail stores and see how the sales do.

nce we did that( we started to have forms and inventories; we started

having multiple titles and having to account for everything. 8e opened up

bank accounts( got tax *< numbers( and we always had product on hand. 8estarted to think more from a marketing standpoint: 8e asked ourselves: 2how

can we outdo the last pro5ect.3

6s we started to move more units( started to do more shows( and started to

have more opportunities( the business 5ust evolved with that. =ut the

di+erence is we weren7t working for somebody we were working for

    ourselves.

    >ow did you acuire that industry knowledge? 6 lot of these things don7t

come intuitively for a lot of musicians.

    >onestly( man( it was kind of a thing where * was watching di+erent cats from

the =ay( and reading articles and di+erent stu+ on people. Portland is an

independent musician city( so * was around a lot of people in the rock

business( doing a lot of the same things. * could watch them and build a

blueprint o+ of stu+ that they were doing.

6 lot of the ways * was operating my business was based o+ what * saw indie

rock artists doing from a do-it-yourself perspective. * was in a position where *

was able to not only make the music( but also exercise the blueprint of how

to sell the music of how to communicate with record stores. * actually sold a

lot of records myself. 6t one point * was managing &$ record stores in my

basement( in terms of stock that was going out to them.

    8ow.

4o at that point( *7m dealing with 4am oody( 'ower @ecords( ,usicland(

,usic ,illennium and even independent stores in di+erent parts of the

country. * was packaging stu+( shipping it out( and then following up and

signing the forms. *t turned into a real business.

Aou7ve been releasing albums since %BBC( working with artists from all

    spectrums of hip-hop. 1rom conscious artists to =ay 6rea icons like -D$.

8hat7s been the secret to your longevity?

    * think one of the things for me( man( was that at all the di+erent points in my

career that * have been what people would consider 2on(3 * always shared

that: * use Prohop to put on &$ artists from the region; my radio show plays

    local music; when ,urder

to everybody. * understood that it7s not 5ust about me. 6nd * empowered a lot

of people and showed a lot of people how to do it.

'hat always comes back to bene9t you. 8hether it be somebody coming

back to extend a hand( or people saying( 2* know that this dude is a gooddude and he operates in an unsel9sh fashion( so * want to extend another

    business opportunity to him.3

    * see how that keeps you in business( but how do you stay relevant musically?

Eust by understanding evolution of music. 1ollowing with the times and

progression. 6s we both know( and *7m sure in your time of appreciatingmusic( you7ve seen a lot of rappers come and go. *7ve seen a lot of rappers

that are my partners F bigger artists than me F have stu+ poppin7( but three

or four years later they7re not doing anything.

*n my music * was never doing anything where * could play myself out. * 5ust

make solid music F that7s ool ut0. 8hen everything changed to trap rap(

*7m not shifting gears. *7m not getting a mouth full of gold teeth( and rapping

like *7m from 6tlanta. 'he thing is( once that fad goes out( what do you have

    to hold yourself down?

People know that *7m going to make consistently good( solid rap music. 6ll of

those elements have been bene9cial to me because it prolonged my career.

*7m going #$ years deep into this( man. *7m working for myself( making a

living( and *7m able to provide for my family. *7m seeing the world o+ of my

    music.

,usic is what you do? Aou don7t do anything else?

Aeah music is my 5ob. * have a radio show( but that7s like three hours a week.

Aou7re not going to feed a family o+ of that. verything from putting out

records and managing artists( to booking shows and promoting concerts( my

whole business is based o+ of music. 1rom the management part to theconsulting and marketing part( there are many di+erent facets to how *7ve

been able to sustain my career and business over the years.

8hen you 9rst got into music( did you ever expect getting into so many

    aspects of it?

o because when we started doing music( it was 5ust about rapping.

    >onestly( we started breakdancing. verybody was breakdancing. =ut thenbreakdancing went out( we started rapping. 6nd when * started rapping( you

know it was rapping for fun. *t was like going to play hoop. 8hen you start

playing hoop( you7re not imagining( 2*7m gonna go to the =6( then *7m gonna

have a sports management company( then *7m gonna facilitate all these big

charity basketball games.3 Aou7re 5ust out there hooping. 'hat7s how it was

with rapping for me. * 5ust had a love for rapping.

8hen * was growing up( an album would come out( and me and my homeboy

would go to the record store and buy it. 8e7d go to the house and put it inand we sit around the stereo listening for hours( talking about how dope this

    new 4noop

,y friend came to me and said: 2>ey( man. Aou are one of the most visible

people in this city( and one of the most powerful people in terms of your

voice( and what you could do. * got an idea: we could do an event called the

Prohop( it7s the Portland regon >ip-hop 1estival and basically( what *7m

going to do( is use what you7re doing to facilitate this idea( and for you to not

only build a platform for local artists( but for people to also see the powerthat you have to make bigger and better things happen for the city.3

6nd so( we put Prohop together man and it PPPer manager also managed ,r. 1ab. 1ab and *

are real tight( and me and her manager are real tight. 4o( when he startedmanaging Greayshawn( and he knew that * had already tour managed for -

D$ and stu+ like that( he came to me and said 2ut0( * got this gig with her(

you wanna come on board and tour manage for her?3 6nd * was like 2Het7s do

    it.3 6nd it 5ust kept building.

*t7s no secret: 8hen you think Portland( the 9rst thing that comes to mind

    de9nitely isn7t hip-hop. 4o what7s motivated you to be such a proponent of

    local music?

=ecause * know we have dope artists here. 8e have artists that need to beheard. 6lso( this is where *7m from; *7m not from anywhere else. *7m not from

H6. *7m not from the =ay. Portland has a+orded me the luxury to be able to

have a rap career and be able to not only be a celebrity here( but * could go

to H6 and somebody would come up to me in the mall and be like( 26ww(

    you7re ool ut0 from PortlandI3

,e doing my thing for my city opened so many doors for me( that * would be

stupid to try to go somewhere else and try to act like *7m from there( or try to

    claim somewhere else.

*7ve been talking a lot about music entrepreneurship. 8hen you hear that

term( what do you think of?

    * 5ust think of people like Eay-0 that have created so many avenues for

themselves and laid the blueprint and continue to show people like myself

what7s possible. wning clubs( owning part of a basketball stadium( liuorcompanies and all type of stu+ like that.

*t7s incredible to 5ust sit back and watch al the stu+ that7s possible through

music and hip-hop( and then all the di+erent avenues and opportunities that

get created through people like Eay-0 F cats from the same type of situation

    that we came from.

6 lot of people in music never see the whole picture. 'hey 5ust get stuck intothe art as the art( and they7re hoping that their music is 5ust going to promote

itself because it7s good. 8here do you think that comes from?

    * think because rap music started from you rapping( and everybody hears you

rapping and everybody thinks you7re the greatest dude. 6nd a lot of people

nowadays they saw the ,aster Ps and di+erent people that have paved the

way for hip-hop independence. ,aster P and ash ,oney showed a lot of

people what it was really like to make something happen. =ut people don7t

    see it all.

ven with me( for instance( people don7t see me out there at C a.m. on a bike(

putting up my own posters. People

don7t see me up at D a.m. in my basement with #$$ packages putting the

labels on them( printing the labels out( collecting and putting together

databases and di+erent stu+ like that. 6ll they see is ool ut0 the rapper.

2* seen ool ut0 open for -D$I ,an( ool ut0( you need to put me on a

    showI *f * open for -D$( it7s gonna be poppinI3 =ut they don7t see all the work

that got you to opening for -D$. r what got you in the maga0ine or what

    made certain things happen.

    People 5ust think 2*7m a rapper( *7m dope F *7m doper than himI 8hy is he

    doing that? 8hy ain7t * doing that?3

6 lot of rappers don7t wanna pass out Jyers( they don7t wanna get out and

    sell

ur people need to be schooled to understand that taking time to listen and

acuire knowledge is a big part of being successful. 4urrounding yourself with

other successful people is also a big part of it. 6nd * think traditionally and

inherently( a lot of things are hidden from our people in terms of long-term

knowledge( longevity( generational success or assets being passed down.

    * think from that perspective( as it applies to hip-hop as well( people have to

be given that information. 'hey have to be given that opportunity or the

ability to be taught how to be really successful.

ven with Eay-L( somebody took him under their wing and there are probably

a bunch of people that have sat down with him and given him powerful

information and knowledge. >e might have a mentor that we don7t even

know about. >e might sit on the phone for hours talking to 8arren =u+et( and8arren =u+et is giving him all this game. 6 lot of it is really about information

    and connection.

*f you don7t have the connections or if you don7t have the information( then

    you7re 5ust an outsider.

8hat7s next for you? 8hat are you working on?

*7m working on new albums( new music( the management side of things( *

mean a lot of the same stu+ as in the past( but the biggest part of it now( is

9guring out the next level progression of it. >ow to take things to that next

level. >ow to turn what *7ve built already into something bigger. >ow to

progress that to the next thing.

*7m not getting any younger( so now it7s time to create something that * canpass on to my children. 4tu+ that * wasn7t given F information that * wasn7t

given( or game that wasn7t passed down to me. * want to be in a position to

pass that down to my kids.

8hat advice would you give to all the musicians out there?

  • 8/9/2019 Planes de Negocios Music Video Servicios Educacion Paginas Musica Industria Otros

    10/11

8ork harder than everybody else( and follow-up.

    1ollow-up?

8hen you7re out working and you7re meeting people( or you7re making

something positive happen( one of the biggest things that you can do( is

follow-up with that person or the situation. Aou might get someone7s business

card and not call him back( or not introduce yourself.

r you might go to a show( and the club owner is saying( 2>ey( * would like to

do more stu+ with you(3 but instead of following up with him( you were in theclub kickin7 it( got drunk( lost his card( and other stu+ you know?

4o basically( if you7re a musician( don7t lose sight of the connections that you

could make( and always be thinking about those?

xactlyI 6nother thing is( you never know who7s who( or who7s gonna be

somebody. 6 classic example is ,acklemore.

,acklemore used to open for groups that * managed. 6nd now he has the

number one song in the country. 6nd he7s from 4eattle. obody ever thought

that he would do something to that level or that caliber when you go to a

show and see him rapping for M$ people.

=ut the biggest part is working harder than everybody else. 8hen everybody

else wants to be up kicking it( smoking weed and hollering at females( youcould be somewhere reading a book or doing something else that7s going to

    bene9t your music career.
