UNDERSTANDING OF SCRIPTURE September 30, 2018 26th Sunday in Ordinary Time As we go about our days, we necessarily label, clas-sify, and prioritize. What's "in" and what's "out" on our priority list? Because humans are social beings, we tend to do the same thing with people. We can only invite six people to the dinner party. Our young child wants to invite certain friends to her birthday, but we're keenly aware of who the parents are, and the prospect of spending several hours with them is enough to give us pause. In today's Gospel, Jesus' disciples face a classifica-tion problem. They've seen another person driving out demons in the name of Jesus. They recognize him, a non-Apostle, as clearly "out." And yet "Jesus replied, 'Do not prevent him? whoever is not against us is for us." Jesus recognizes real faith in the would-be exorcist. In our own lives, Jesus invites us to rec-ognize others' good intentions. They should not be cut off simply because they do not line up with all our personal preferences. What, then, is deserving of such a fate? "If your hand causes you to sin, cut it off? if your eye causes you to sin, pluck it out." When his listeners blame others, Jesus tends to piv-ot the conversation to their own lives. In this case, the message is clear. What we really need to cut out is that which keeps us from Jesus. If over-commitment causes us to lose patience with our family, doubt God's providence, and become con-sumed with self-reliance, cut something out. If cer-tain friendships lead us time after time into gossip and slander, cut it out. In today's Gospel, Jesus in-vites us to live intentionally in our discipleship. Are we ready?

DE LA ESCRITURA 30 de sept 2018 26 ° domingo del tiempo ordinario A medida que avanzamos en nuestros días, necesari-amente etiquetamos, clasificamos y priorizamos. ¿Qué está "dentro" y qué está "fuera" en nuestra lista de prioridades? Debido a que los humanos somos seres sociales, tendemos a hacer lo mismo con las personas. Solo podemos invitar a seis personas a la cena. Nuestro hijo pequeño quiere invitar a algunos amigos a su cumpleaños, pero somos muy conscientes de quiénes son los padres, y la perspectiva de pasar varias horas con ellos es suficiente para detenernos. En el Evangelio de hoy, los discípulos de Jesús en-frentan un problema de clasificación. Han visto a otra persona expulsando demonios en el nombre de Jesús. Lo reconocen, un no apóstol, como claramente "fuera". Y, sin embargo, "Jesús respondió: 'No lo prevengan, el que no está contra nosotros es por nosotros'. Jesús reconoce la fe real en el aspirante a exorcista. En nuestras propias vidas, Jesús nos invita a reconocer las buenas intenciones de los demás. No deberían cor-tarse simplemente porque no se alinean con todas nuestras preferencias personales. ¿Qué es, entonces, merecedor de tal destino? "Si tu mano te hace pecar, córtatela; si tu ojo te hace pecar, sácalo". Cuando sus oyentes culpan a los demás, Jesús tiende a centrar la conversación en sus propias vidas. Si el ex-ceso de compromiso nos hace perder la paciencia con nuestra familia, dudar de la providencia de Dios y ser consumidos por la autosuficiencia, recortar algo. Si ciertas amistades nos llevan una y otra vez al chisme y a la calumnia, recórtalo. En el Evangelio de hoy, Jesús nos invita a vivir intencionalmente en nuestro discipu-lado. ¿Estamos listos?

St. Michael the Archangel is mentioned a few times in the Bible and is venerated as the ‘Prince of Angels.’ He is known for interceding for us for protection from evil and for heal-ing. In Christian art, he is often depicted wearing armor, wielding a sword or spear and slaying a dragon, a serpent or satan. The Catholic church refers to Michael the Archangel as St. Michael even though he is an angel, and not a saint whose recognition result-ed from canonization. He is believed to be the prince of all of God’s angels, and the protector of the church. There were several instances when St. Michael is believed to have appeared in the Bible, among them: • In the Book of Daniel, St. Michael is referenced as the “Great

Prince and defender of your people” • As a sword-wielding angel who introduced himself to Joshua just

before the fall of Jericho, as commander of the army of the Lord. • As the leader of the Angels who banished Satan and his minions

according to the Book of Revelations • As an Archangel in the Epistle of Jude • In the Epistle to the Thessalonians, mention is made of an archan-

gel who will announce the second coming of Christ. Though not identified, it is believed to be referring to St. Michael.

• St. Michael is venerated as a healer, and protector of the Catholic Church especially one of our patron of our parish.

HAPPY FEAST DAY OF SAINT MICHAEL
