SAINT JOSEPHINE BAKHITA (c. 1869-1947) February 8 “Save Darfur!” That cry echoes around the world and in the heart of the Church, where a child of Darfur is one of our newest saints: Josephine (her baptismal name) Bakhita (“Lucky One,” the slave-traders’ nickname). Kidnapped at nine, sold in Sudan’s slave-markets, flogged daily till covered with scars, Bakhita was finally bought by Italians and taken to Italy. There Bakhita discovered a “Master” who had himself been flogged to redeem her from slavery! “I am truly loved,” she thought, “and awaited by this Love.” Baptized, she often kissed the baptismal font, exclaiming, “Here I became a daughter of God!” For fifty years as a Daughter of Charity, Bakhita provided cheerful hospitality to all who knocked at the convent door. In her final illness, she relived slavery’s horror: “Please, loosen these chains,” she begged the nurse. “They are so heavy!” Her last words were: “Our Lady! Our Lady!” John Paul II canonized her in the Jubilee Year 2000, praising God for leading her “from abject slavery to the dignity of being your daughter and the Bride of Christ.”—Peter Scagnelli, Copyright © J. SANTA ESCOLÁSTICA (c. 480-543) 10 de febrero Lo que sabemos de santa Escolástica lo hemos conocido gracias a los escritos de Benito, su hermano gemelo y gran reformador de la vida monástica, fundador del convento de Monte Cassino. Siguiendo el ejemplo de su hermano, Escolástica fundó el monasterio para mujeres en Plombariola. Puesto que en ambas comunidades estaba prohibida la entrada a personas del sexo opuesto, Benito y Escolástica se reunían una vez por año en un punto intermedio para orar y hablar de la vida espiritual. Según las fuentes, durante su último encuentro llegó la hora de despedirse, Benito tenía que regresar al convento. Su hermana le insistió en que se quedara, pero se negó. Entonces, Escolástica le imploró a Dios que su hermano permaneciera y la respuesta fue una tormenta copiosa, de tal suerte que irse era algo impensable. Benedicto reconoció en esta acción no sólo la voluntad de Dios sino la petición que su hermana le había hecho al mismo Dios que tanto amaban. GOD’S CALL The person who has been “saved,” who has “heard the good news of salvation,” still lives in an unsaved world, a world sadly oblivious to the presence of God. Today’s readings outline how the disciple is present in the world. The outline begins with Isaiah: “Share your bread . . . shel-ter the oppressed . . . clothe the naked” (Isaiah 58:7). Those who hear the word of salvation are not insensitive to the ur-gent needs of others. Then Paul reminds his flock that he brought Christ to them not in eloquence or wisdom, but by being with them in the “weakness and fear” of their daily lives (1 Corinthians 2:3). Finally, Jesus tells his disciples to go out into the gloom and darkness of the streets of the world and let God’s light shine through their good deeds. We disciples don’t save the world. To the extent, howev-er, that we have heard the word of God and been awakened to God’s presence, we may spread that word and bring that pres-ence to others. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

EL LLAMADO DE DIOS La persona que ha sido “salvada” y que ha “oído la buena noticia de salvación” sigue viviendo en un mundo que no ha sido salvado, un mundo tristemente inconsciente de la presencia de Dios. Las lecturas de hoy bosquejan cómo el discípulo se hace presente al mundo. Ese perfil se inicia con Isaías: “Comparte tu pan con el hambriento. . . abre tu casa al pobre sin techo. . . viste al desnudo” (Isaías 58:7). Los que escuchan la palabra de salvación no son insensibles a las urgentes necesidades de los demás. Pablo le recuerda a su rebaño que él le trajo a Cristo no con elocuencia o sabiduría, sino que permaneció con ellos “débil y temblando de miedo” en medio de su trabajo diario (1 Corintios 2:3). Finalmente, Jesús dice a sus discípulos que vayan a la desesperanza y oscuridad de las calles del mundo y dejen que la luz de Dios brille a través de sus obras buenas. Los discípulos no salvan el mundo. “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand”... Matthew 4:12-17

Jesus said to them. ‘come after me and I will make you fishers of men,’ and at once they left their nets

and followed Him.” These days, we would like to go into psychological detail about the emotional needs of Peter and Andrew and their inner journey of searching for something, reaching out for more. We love to speculate about the dynamics of conversion. That is often our problem in answering Jesus’ call. If the call came to us, we would probably want discussions, some counseling, and some research on decision-making as we weigh the options to ensure that we are responding to a genuine call. While we are doing all that, Jesus would move on to another town and we would miss the chance. That is what has been called the paralysis of analysis. Discussion is easy. But decision takes courage and strength. Discussions are a dime a dozen. Our life is shaped not by our discussions but by our decisions. Analysis is no substitute for decision which is the point this Gospel account is making to us. We follow Jesus by making a choice, not by launching a discussion. Jesus said,” Come after me.” At once, they left their nets and followed. A key detail is found in the nets. The message of Jesus was that the Kingdom of God is at hand and He calls us to reform our lives to enter that kingdom. The trouble is that we want the kingdom but not the reforming. It’s like those who want the elected office, but not the campaign; who want the meal but not the cooking; who want the grades but not the study; who want health but not exercise; who want the salary but not the work. We want to know the rule of God in our life, forgiveness and growth in grace, the sense of belonging to a spiritual community, the peace of being united to God’s will- but we don’t want to give up the nets, the entanglements that trap us, that hold us back. These entanglements are the people and relationships that distance us and separate us from Christ. We don’t want to give up gossiping, cutting corners, wrong relationships, immoral behavior, and habits of arrogance, rash judgment or addictions. So, we try to find ways of having it both ways and we can’t. Those nets weigh us down and hold us tight. To know the kingdom of God in our life we have to be willing to leave behind the nets, the distorting entanglements of soul, heart and mind. The Gospel shows us the ones who left their nets and followed as Jesus gave them a new mission, new seas to sail, deeper purpose for their lives. For us, to follow Jesus is not a matter of leaving family, jobs, or residence. It’s a matter of leaving behind a way of living, and that is far more difficult. Many years ago, when people had problems in their lives or wanted opportunity, they were told “Go west!” So often they took their problems with them because the real problem was not in the East but in the heart. So for us, the problem is not where we live, but how we live; not how much we have, but what we do with it; not in finding the truth, but in embracing it. The reign of God is open to all of us, if we are willing to risk a new way of living, to abandon the “paralysis of analysis” and make the commitment to Jesus Christ. We will experience the kingdom to the extent that we are willing to let some of those nets go It’s hard to follow the Lord if we are dragging all kinds of tangled webs woven from bad memories, angers and sins. They left their nets and followed. We can tell what is really important in our life not by what we get out of it but by what we are willing to give up for it. What nets, entanglements do we still need to leave behind at the shore in order to push out to sea and follow the Lord? They left their nets and followed the Lord. So can we! Deacon Ricardo Rivera

En el evangelio, San Mateo no narra que al enterarse Jesús que habían arrestado a Juan

Bautista se fue a Cafarnaúm y se estableció junto al Lago de Galilea. Llevamos tres domingos consecutivos en lo que la Iglesia llama Tiempo Ordinario. El primer domingo, el Evangelio nos relató como Juan bautizo a Cristo. El Segundo no hablo de los últimos días del ministerio de Juan y de las palabras que pronuncio cuando vio a Jesús acercarse a el: “Este es el Cordero de Dios, que quita los pecados del mundo”. Hoy, Tercer Domingo, el Evangelio nos dice que si queremos que nuestros pecados sean perdonados, tenemos que arrepentirnos. Estamos viviendo tiempos de mucho pecado y maldad y lo peor de todo es que muchos no ven en sus muchos pecados, pecado. La Primera Lectura nos dice que el profeta Isaías hablo a los judíos que se encontraban deportados en Babilonia. A pesar de estar desterrados en un país extranjero y sus vidas ensombrecidas y tristes porque vivían en esclavitud, a pesar de todo eso, estaban viviendo vidas desenfrenadas, en pecado, como viven hoy muchas personas. El profeta Isaías les exhorta a que se arrepienten siguiendo los mandamientos de Dios. Y les promete, que si así lo hacen, un día podrán volver a su tierra, de la que fueron desojados.

Les promete que serán liberados y que esta liberación vendrá de Zabulón y Neftalí. Si se arrepienten, Dios volverá a ellos y los iluminara con la luz que el Mesías Salvador traerá con El. San Mateo, en el Evangelio, nos dice que la profecía de Isaías se hizo realidad cuando Jesús comenzó su vida pública precisamente en la región de Zabulón y Neftalí como se había profetizado siglos antes. De esta manera quiso Nuestro Señor que se cumpliera todo lo que el profeta Isaías había dicho. La región de Galilea estaba habita principalmente por paganos. Y fue allí donde Jesús predico por primera vez proclamando lo que sería la base de su ministerio durante toda su vida terrena: “Convertíos, porque está cerca el reino de los cielos”. El Señor, no solamente comenzó su vida pública predicando sino que ya había decido comenzar a formar su Iglesia y decido hacerlo junto al Lago de Galilea. Pasaba por allí cuando vio a Simón Pedro y a su hermano, Andrés.

Les dijo, “Seguidme”. Los dos hermanos inmediatamente dejaron lo que estaban haciendo y le siguieron. Un poco más adelante vio a Santiago y su hermano Juan, que estaban con su padre, Zebedeo, arreglando las redes. Jesús les llamo y ellos no se demoraron. Dejaron todo lo que estaban haciendo, e incluso a su padre, y le siguieron.

¡Que fuerza no tendrá el Señor cuando llama a alguien! Aunque lo hemos leído en el Evangelio, si no fuera por la fe, cuesta cree que estos hombres dejaran todo inmediatamente y le siguieran. Pero no creamos que lo hicieron sin recapacitar o, como dicen algunos, por ambición o porque querían dejar la rutina. Estos cuatro Apóstoles ya conocían a Jesús, Andrés fue uno de los seguidores de Juan Bautista. Estaba presente cuando Juan dijo que Jesús era “el Cordero de Dios”. Así que nada más escuchar su llamada, respondieron prontamente y con generosidad. El Señor hoy nos dice “Seguidme”. Y quiere que lo hagamos con prontitud, como lo hicieron Pedro, Andrés, Santiago y Juan. Sería un lamentable error ignorar esa llamada con el pretexto de que la vida tiene obligaciones, como familia, trabajo. Todo esto ya lo sabe el Señor. Pero también sabe que tenemos la obligación de seguirle y que podemos compaginar todas esas cosas con seguimiento. Cristo es la Luz del Mundo. Y nuestra vocación, como cristianos, es hacer que su luz brille en nosotros, en nuestra Iglesia y en todo el mundo. Diácono Ricardo Rivera
